This presentation will mark its 85th anniversary. The Desbandada highlights the massacre on the A-340 on Feb. 8th, 1937 where innocent civilians fell victims to Franco’s allies. COVID-19

Andalusia registers 105 municipalities with the rate of Covid greater than 2,000, 54 less in a week: {Translation} 30Jan22 10:46
-More than 627,000 Andalusians live in the 105 municipalities with a Covid-19 coronavirus incidence rate of more than 2,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, led by Pedro Martínez (Granada), which has the highest rate in Andalusia with 6,414.8.
-This represents a notable decrease over the last week in the number of municipalities with a rate of more than 2,000 Covid cases, which translates into a large reduction in the overall population in this situation.
-In short, the community, which last week had 159 municipalities above the 2,000 rate, decreases by a third the total number of localities in this situation to 105.
-Almeria repeats for the third week as the province with the highest number of localities with more than 2,000 confirmed Covid cases in the last 14 days with 24 (18 less), followed by Huelva with 19 (two more); Granada with 18 (19 less); Cordoba with 18 (unchanged); Jaen with 17 (nine less); Malaga with three (six less); Cadiz with five (four more); and Seville with one (unchanged).
-The overall decrease at the regional level has meant that only one province has increased the number of municipalities with a rate of over 2,000 Covid cases in the last two weeks – Huelva – while the rest have reduced it.
-In Granada the 18 localities with more than 2,000 cases of Covid in the past 14 days: Albondón (2.387,6), Aldeire (2.381), Beas de Guadix (2.735,6), Benamaurel (2.522,1), The Calahorra (2.245,5), Decimate (2.356), Ferreira (3.322,3), Guadix (2.115,4), Huéscar (2.557,3), Marchal (3,140 Pesos,1), Morelábor (2.097,9), Orce (2.109,7), Pedro Martinez (6.414,8), Polícar (3.041,8), Purullena (2.732), Beas de Granada (2.142,9), Ventas de Huelma (2.283,1) and Zagra (2.598,9).
-In Malaga there are three locations with rates of over 2,000 cases of Covid: Benamocarra (2.527,9), Canete la Real (2.020,8) and the Fuente de Piedra (2.554,5). SPAIN

Crackdown On Pirate TV In Spain, Year 1 Results- Spanish ISPs Blocked 869 Domains & Subdomains in 2021 To Prevent Piracy:
Following the signing voluntary code of conduct between rightsholders and internet service providers in Spain, the government is now reporting on the first year’s results. Overall, the vast majority of providers took action to render 869 domains and subdomains (apps & websites) inaccessible to subscribers, with the aim of preventing illegal access to millions of movies, TV shows, videogames and ebooks.
After well over a decade of rightsholders using the legal system to compel ISPs to block sites on copyright infringement grounds with little success, thousands of domains are now being blocked by national internet service providers.

AXARQUIA

The La Viñuela reservoir is at 15% of its capacity with just 26 cubic hectometers of water accumulated: {Translation, summary} 29Jan22
-The emergency works due to the drought have not yet prevented the level from continuing to fall.
-The reservoir of La Viñuela holds a total of 25.82 cubic hectometres on this Saturday 29 January 2022, compared to 26.28 cubic hectometres a week ago and 51.70 cubic hectometres a year ago.
-It is still not raining and the forecasts of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) indicate that it will not rain in the next few days either. There is the added circumstance that the reservoir of La Viñuela is the one that has collected the least rainwater during the current hydrological year (it began on 1 October 2021) of all those in the province of Málaga, barely 30.60 millimetres. The situation in the reservoir continues to be one of exceptional drought. ANDALUCIA

Andalusia opens from Monday vaccination with third doses for adults of 25 years, and progressing down to 18 years: {Translation, summary} 30Jan22
-This Monday, the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) is opening up the auto-delivery of the Covid-19 booster dose to people born after 1997, i.e. those who are 25 years old or about to turn 25 years old. During the week, the age range will be progressively extended to 18 years of age, thus completing the option of receiving this dose for the entire population covered by the strategy.
-It is worth remembering that since Monday 24 January, people born between 1985 and 1992 have been eligible for the booster dose.
-The booster dose is indicated if five months have passed since the second dose of messenger RNA (Pfizer or Moderna). In addition, three months after the second dose of AstraZeneca vaccine and three months after vaccination with Janssen. From 65 years of age onwards, the four-week waiting period is not necessary, simply that the person is well and out of isolation. In the booster dose, messenger RNA vaccines will be administered regardless of the first schedule.
-As for the walk-in vaccination points, people born in 1997 or earlier who are pending a booster dose, those who received a dose from Janssen or the AstraZeneca regimen, as well as people aged 12 years or older who have yet to start the vaccination process with the first dose or are awaiting the second dose, will be able to attend. As the appointment years open up, walk-ins will also be available. Source, Spanish:

MALAGA

Malaga city’s first skyscrapers climb high: The Malaga of the tower blocks, the skyscrapers included in the Urban Plan a decade ago, is starting to materialise. The buildings which will change the city skyline forever, are heading towards the clouds without many local people realising just how high they are going to be. One of the two which the developer AQ Acentor is building on the site of the old Sunday market in Martiricos will be 20 metres higher than the tower of the cathedral.
-These two skyscapers, located just north of the city centre, will have 29 floors above the ground floor. The one to the south will have commercial premises at street level and 252 apartments for sale, and the other will have a 315-room hotel from the 1st to 13th floors and 198 rental apartments from there to the 29th. Those on the top floor will be 111.53 metres above the ground.
-The aim of AQ Acentor is to have the structure of both skyscrapers finished by the final quarter of this year, and for the apartments in the south tower ready for occupation in the second half of 2023.

“Ten-Four Good Buddy, Looks Like We Got Ourselves A Convoy!”- Canada truckers protest against COVID vaccine mandates blocks Ottawa for second day:
-Justin Trudeau was moved to a secret location as thousands in Canada protest COVID-19 vaccine mandates for truckers and other restrictions.
-After nearly a week of driving, Canadian truckers arrived at the nation’s capital this weekend. What began as a protest against vaccine mandates for truckers who travel over the US-Canada border evolved to include opposition to other measures.
-On Saturday, big rigs and people on foot filled the streets around Canada’s parliament as police monitored the crowds. The protests had remained peaceful as of Saturday evening, with no charges brought against any demonstrators, Ottawa police said.
-Trucks remained parked on the streets near parliament on Sunday morning, a day before lawmakers are due to resume work after the holiday break. Some truckers said they will not leave until the mandate is overturned.
-Similar protests were held in many Canadian cities this weekend

MOONETTE – Organic Skincare for Mature Skin
We are a Torrox-based company specialising in the creation of formulae which help prevent premature skin ageing. We are committed to making effective products at affordable prices.
Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?
As our skin is the first layer of our defence against microbial infections, ultraviolet radiation and environmental contamination it plays a vital role in our health. As we grow older, however, our skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and more sensitive; hence it requires the use of treatments containing specific ingredients to the care of treating mature skin.
Recognising this need we have created a range of formulae which help
-slow down ageing process by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
-improve facial complexion and eliminate blemishes.
At Moonette, we are passionate about health, beauty and plants. Your skin will benefit from the properties of botanic essential oils combined with a selection of nutrients for deep hydration, cell revitalization and antioxidant effect, all sourced from the finest natural ingredients with gorgeous fragrances.
Naturally, we care about our planet and feel the need to help reduce the sheer volumes of plastics waste that are generated daily around the globe. Presently, we are minimizing the usage of plastic materials in our production while seeking alternative forms of packaging. To help reduce pollution we are asking all local customers to recycle or reuse their Moonette skincare containers, and offering a small discount on future purchases to customers recycling containers.

COVID-19

Covid ‘passport’ for access to hospitality, care homes and hospitals in Andalucía extended until 15 February: The Superior Court of Justice of Andalucía (TSJA), based in Granada, has agreed to extend until next 15 February the measure that requires the presentation of a Covid-19 vaccination certificate or negative diagnostic test for access to bars, restaurants and nightclubs, as well as to hospitals and care homes for visitors. Covid Andalucia- Infections and incidence down, but death toll rises to 32: {Translation, summary} 28Jan22 12:51
-Coronavirus infections have fallen in Andalusia in the last day to 7,602 cases and the incidence rate has fallen 64 points to 1,104 per 100,000 inhabitants in fourteen days, while daily deaths have increased by four to 32.
-The incidence rate has begun a downward trend in recent days and has fallen by 64 points to 1,104.6 on Friday.
-By provinces, the lowest incidence rate corresponds to Seville, 767; Malaga, with 917.5, and Cadiz, with 916.1; while the rest are above 1,000 and the highest is recorded in Almeria, with 2,061 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in fourteen days. Covid Malaga- The Covid rate has fallen in Malaga for the last week, but there are eight more fatalities: {Translation, summary} 28Jan22 13:17
-The rate on Thursday was 995.3 cases per 100,000 population and on Friday it stands at 917.5. Almost eighty points less in just one day. But if we compare it with a week ago, the drop is much greater, almost 300 points. Since then, the incidence has not stopped falling. It seems that this is not a saw-tooth in the epidemiological plateau where Covid has been in recent weeks, but rather – if the downward trend continues – the beginning of the end of the sixth wave. It also fell in Andalusia – from 1,178.0 to 1,104.6 between Thursday and Friday – and in the city of Malaga – from 1,126.4 to 1,019.6 between the two days.
-But these good figures are contrasted by another bad one. Those eight deaths registered Friday brings the cumulative number of deaths with Covid in the province to 2,155 during the pandemic.
-The daily report on the coronavirus also reflects a decrease in the pressure of care. This Friday there are 467 hospitalised patients, 13 less than on Thursday. But this decrease – which could be interpreted as good news – is in reality largely due to the fact that eight patients have died.
-The new positives counted this Friday total 1,205.

SPAIN

Spain already has five cases of the new variant, the so-called ‘ómicron silent’: {Translation} 28Jan22 13:33
-Madrid, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands were the first regions to detect cases of “omicron stealth” (the BA.2 sublineage), the progress of which, for the moment, is taken with caution but without particular concern among health authorities and experts.
-This subvariant of omicron, which differs from the original in some mutations, including the spike protein, has already spread to some 40 countries, such as Denmark, the United Kingdom and India, which is why the World Health Organisation has called for its development to be monitored.
-In total, up to five cases have been detected in Spain, according to the data communicated by these three communities up to Thursday, a figure that is expected to increase in the coming days because it is assumed to be highly transmissible, although more difficult to detect in certain diagnostic tests, which is why it has been christened “stealthy or silent”.
-The Minister of Health explained this Thursday in Congress that Ba.2 behaves “similarly” to BA.1, although she said this “with all due caution”, because it is still under evaluation.
-But it is the lineage originating from the omicron variant that continues to dominate community transmission of the virus in the sixth wave, with indicators that have been softening in the last 12 days, although doubts persist about the picture offered by the accumulated incidence.
-The health authorities are aware of the under-reporting in the general statistics of the positive cases detected in the self-diagnosis tests purchased in pharmacies and carried out at home.
-The minister therefore explained in her appearance this Thursday in Congress that a new model for evaluating the pandemic must be sought, that is, “to make progress” in distinguishing in the epidemiological data the people hospitalised and the patients who die “due to covid” from those who die “with covid”.
-Precisely, according to the latest report of Health, hospital indicators have remained almost at the same level in recent days, with slight decreases and an occupancy rate on the ward of 14.8% and in intensive care units of 22.1%.
-With these records, the sixth wave seems to give a small respite to hospitals, with tenths of a percent decrease in both ward indicators and intensive care units, because, as in previous days, the number of discharges (2,469) has again exceeded the number of admissions (2,127).
-The incidence has fallen again for the fourth consecutive day, in total by 55 points, to 3,139 cases, although the daily number of positives remains very high, above 100,000, with more than 130,000 on Thursday.

The Government assures that the hotly debated Housing Law (the one with all the rent controls) has “constitutional solvency”:
{Translation} Update: 28JAN22 11:30
-The Minister of Transport, Raquel Sánchez, has assured that the draft bill for the Right to Housing has “legal and constitutional solvency” and for this reason the Government “maintains its timetable” for processing it.
-Sánchez stressed her confidence in the future law, despite the critical report approved this Thursday by the plenary session of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) against one of the central government’s flagship laws.
-Speaking in Barcelona, Sánchez explained that the Moncloa will have the definitive report today, given that it was awaiting “some amendments that had been contributed by some members”.
-But the minister has been clear about this government project: “We will have a housing law. The intention is to take it to the Council of Ministers this Tuesday to continue with its approval and parliamentary processing”.
-Next Tuesday, 1 February, the Council of Ministers will thus approve the draft bill in the second round and send it to Congress for its parliamentary processing.
-Although he admitted that the Government “will analyse this report in detail”, he insisted: “We continue to maintain our timetable, because we are sure that it is a good law, which has a legal and constitutional solvency that is fully in force”. MALAGA

Cat Colonies To Be Managed- Vélez-Málaga approves the new Animal Welfare Ordinance: {Translation} 28Jan22
-The definitive approval of the new Municipal Ordinance on the Possession of Companion Animals and Potentially Dangerous Dogs (PPP) had the support of all political groups.
-An ordinance that has been in the works for some time, fully adapted to the new European regulations and which in recent months has been exposed to a broad process of citizen participation so that animal protection organisations, veterinarians and other groups involved could evaluate it and present their allegations. This initiative aims to guarantee the welfare and protection of animals, avoiding situations of cruelty and mistreatment, promoting responsible animal ownership, the fight against abandonment, the promotion of adoption, sterilisation and the rules for a good coexistence between all citizens of the municipality.
-The Ordinance includes the implementation of a programme for the management and control of urban cat colonies through the ‘CER Method’ (Capture, Sterilisation and Return) with the aim of progressively reducing the cat population in each colony, creating a census of urban cats grouped in colonies in the municipality and encouraging the adoption of cats. This programme will be implemented by means of an action plan carried out by volunteers who will have a card approved by the City Council and who may be feeders, coordinators or capturers, and as those responsible for the cat colonies they will also have a series of obligations to fulfil. EUROPE

The Council of the European Union Wants Restrictions to Remain in Place for Unvaccinated & Unrecovered Persons Due to High COVID-19 Rates Throughout the Bloc: 28JAN22
-“Member states should apply measures regarding travel to and from dark red areas, where the virus is circulating at very high levels. They should, in particular, discourage all non-essential travel and require persons arriving from those areas who are not in possession of a vaccination or recovery certificate to undergo a test prior to departure and to quarantine after arrival,” the statement of the Council reads.
-The latest update of maps by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) shows that all Member States, with the exception of some regions in Poland and Romania, are currently part of the dark red list.
-Since the majority of countries are currently highly affected by the virus, travel within the EU is expected to become even more difficult for persons who hold expiring vaccination passes. The majority of Member States have already announced that they will shorten the validity of vaccination passes.

Sweden decides against recommending COVID vaccines for kids aged 5-11: Sweden has decided against recommending COVID vaccines for kids aged 5-11, the Health Agency said on Thursday, arguing that the benefits did not outweigh the risks. “With the knowledge we have today, with a low risk for serious disease for kids, we don’t see any clear benefit with vaccinating them,” Health Agency official Britta Bjorkholm told a news conference. -Gov. Jim Justice has a message for singer and actress Bette Midler, who called West Virginians “poor, illiterate and strung out” in a tweet.
-The 70-year-old Republican governor ended his televised State of the State address Thursday night by lifting up his English bulldog and flashing its rear end to the cameras and crowd.

As we live in Granada (La Herradura) just at the border to Malaga we always feel that the Costa Tropical should be covered too. And as you certainly know there are a lot of internationals living in that area – residents or part of the year. Regards, Gabriele / La Herradura

SPAIN

Spain introduces new Covid vaccination certificate rules for international arrivals: From 1 February, Spain will tighten the coronavirus vaccination certificate requirements for international arrivals at its airports and ports, after the order was published in the BOE Official State Gazette.
-The Travel Safe area of Spain’s official tourism website has reminded travellers, “From 1 February 2022, in order to travel to Spain with a vaccination certificate, the certificate must have been issued by the competent authorities of the country of origin at least 14 days after the date of administration of the last dose of the full course of vaccination, as long as the final dose of that course of vaccination was no more than 270 days ago. From that date, the certificate must show the administration of a booster vaccination.”
-The web page goes in to say the vaccination certificate must include, at least, the following information:
1. Name and surname of the holder
2. Dates of vaccination, indicating the date of the last dose administered
3. Type or types of vaccine administered
4. Number of doses administered / complete regimen
5. Issuing country
6. Identification of the issuing body of the vaccination certificate
-The Brits in Spain Facebook page, managed by the British Embassy staff in Madrid, has also reminded that, for anyone planning to travel to Spain, the UK’s Travel Advice has been updated accordingly – while pointing out the web page reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British Citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel, reinforcing that the authorities in Spain set and enforce entry rules. EUROPE

EU drug regulator OKs Pfizer COVID pill for high-risk patients: The European Union’s drug regulator on Thursday gave the green light to Pfizer Inc’s (PFE.N) antiviral COVID-19 pill for treating adults at risk of severe illness, as the region scrambles to boost its arsenal to fight the Omicron variant.
The endorsement by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for a conditional approval, if followed as usual by the European Commission, allows EU member states to deploy the drug after the regulator gave guidance for its emergency use late last year.
Italy, Germany and Belgium are among a handful of EU countries that have bought the drug, branded as Paxlovid. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ema-green-lights-pfizers-covid-19-pill-2022-01-27/

Italy to Ease Travel Rules for EU Citizens From February 1: The Italian Minister of Health announced on Wednesday that starting from February 1, Italy will ease its COVID-19 restrictions for all travellers from European Union countries. The Minister signed an order that states that all visitors from the EU would be permitted entry to the country by only presenting a Green Pass. The Green Pass is a document that proves whether a person has been vaccinated, recovered, or tested negative recently. This means that all EU citizens who present one of the above-mentioned certificates will soon be able to enter Italy without having to follow additional entry rules. ANDROID SCAM ALERT- Widespread Malware Campaigns Targeting Android Devices: The new wave of attacks is said to have been most active in Australia, Germany, Poland, Spain, Austria, and Italy, among others, with attacks spreading to newer countries like Romania, the Netherlands, and Thailand starting mid-January.

EU declares Spain forcing residents to declare assets abroad is “contrary to EU law”: January 26, The Court of Justice of the European Union declared it “contrary to EU law” for Spanish legislation to force residents to declare assets and rights abroad through the so-called ‘model 720.’ The Court of Justice of the European Union has now considered that the sanctions and fines it imposes are “disproportionate” and undermine the free movement of capital in the European Union. It remains to be seen how Spain will respond. Full article: https://www.euroweeklynews.com/2022/01/27/just-in-eu-declares-it-illegal-for-spain-to-force-residents-to-declare-assets-abroad/

Cancel Culture Fail- Spotify to Remove Neil Young’s Music After He Objects to Joe Rogan’s Podcasts (the most popular podcast in the world): {DigameXtra} Spotify is in the process of removing proud lefty Neil Young’s catalog of music from its service after the artist published – then took down – an open letter with an ultimatum- Deal with what Young considers to be “vaccine misinformation” coming from Joe Rogan’s podcast, or lose Young’s music (which reportedly provides 60% of Young’s annual income). The one piece of evidence Young stated in his letter, to support his effort to “cancel” Rogan, had been proven to be fraudulent weeks before, that’s probably the reason Young took the letter down from his site soon after posting it.
Two days after the letter was published, Spotify made their decision, and is now in the process of removing Young’s music from the streaming service, a Spotify spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. Sorry Neil, you should have just faded away with the money. Now we’ll have to suffer thru more rusty, burnt out  “farewell tours” since your retirement income just got cancelled. Benefit Payment to the Recently Unemployed: The State Public Employment Service (SEPE) has a unemployment aid of 463 euros, also known as ‘mini-stop’. ALMERIA

Controversial hotel project in Spain’s Cabo de Gata natural park gets new push: A controversial hotel project in Spain’s Cabo de Gata-Níjar natural park, in the southeastern province of Almería, is one step closer to going ahead. The project aims to transform a run-down cortijo into a 30-room hotel with 70 parking spaces in the heart of the protected ecosystem. Consisting of several buildings that were formerly used as a rope factory and a farm, the hotel would stand about 900 meters from Los Genoveses beach, one of the best-preserved environmental gems in the Andalusia region.
The regional government has made its approval conditional on the developers obtaining authorization for the reuse of treated water and also on the project being declared of public interest, formalities that should go smoothly given the Andalusian government’s support. The plan has, however, been condemned by numerous environmental associations and over 250,000 people have protested against it on the petition platform Change.org. Photo:Nuria Talavera. EUROPE

Netherlands lifts toughest Covid curbs with Denmark and France set to follow: The Netherlands has lifted its toughest Covid controls, Denmark is to remove all restrictions within days and France will begin easing curbs next week.
-Dutch bars, restaurants and museums were allowed to reopen on Wednesday. Cafes, bars and restaurants closed since mid-December can now reopen with reduced capacity and until 10pm as long as customers have a Covid pass, with cinemas, theatres, museums and sports events also allowed to welcome the public back.
-The Danish government, which two weeks ago allowed cinemas and music venues to reopen after a month’s closure, also announced on Wednesday plans to scrap remaining domestic coronavirus controls from 1 February. The move – which must be approved by parliament – will allow nightclubs to reopen, restaurants to serve alcohol after 10pm, and shops to lift limits on customer numbers. Vaccine passes will no longer be needed, and commuters may travel without wearing masks.
-Belgium last week announced a slight easing of its restrictions from Friday despite record infections, with bars and restaurants allowed to stay open until midnight and indoor activities such as play areas and bowling alleys to reopen.
-France’s vaccine pass, required since Monday to enter restaurants, cinemas and other public venues, would allow from 2 February audience capacity limits for concert halls and sports and other events to be lifted, with working from home also no longer mandatory for many employees and face masks not needed outside. Halting Erosion using Vetiver:
From Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Our Nursery is open by appointment. Please email or call first. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa.
Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now. We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture.
Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites.
In the 2 photos below you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later.
We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge.
Here is a link to a short video showing the results.
https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo
We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant.
To see more images of Vetiver go to this link.

SPAIN

SCAM ALERT– Spain’s DGT warns of phishing scam and false fines:
-The Directorate-General for Traffic in Spain has warned that any emails apparently sent by the roads authority about supposed fines are phishing fakes and that anyone who gets an email about fines should not open it but immediately delete it.
-This is the second time in less than 12 months the DGT has been targeted by cybercriminals. In March 2021, it had to issue a similar warning about phishing emails that appear to be demanding the payment of a fine but in fact contain malware.
-The current batch of phishing emails have the message: “Bloqueo del Vehiculo – Multa no pagada” and they appear to have been sent by the Ministry of Interior. Once opened, the user must click on a link to see the fine but what happens is that the link downloads malware onto the device. The IMF leaves Spain’s growth in 2021 at 4.9% and points it out as the great disappointment of the eurozone: Against what the Government assured, and even against what the large international organizations expected, the Spanish economy, which was one of those that suffered the most from the blow of the pandemic, has not been the one that has also shown a more vigorous recovery in the first year of reactivation. The powerful growth of 9.8% that Nadia Calviño’s team ‘painted’ to support the public accounts of 2021 has been downgraded. The more moderate 6.5% that it was lowered to when just three months of last year had already been observed, exposed that the objective set in the Budgets was totally unattainable, according to the advance published this Tuesday by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), that now says it is a much more modest 4.9%, which is not only a galaxy away from the official forecast but below world growth and the average growth of the euro zone. UK Lifts Testing Requirement for Vaccinated Travellers & Abolishes Quarantine Rule for Unvaccinated Ones: Fully vaccinated citizens of European countries will be eligible to travel to the United Kingdom without being subject to additional rules such as testing requirements after such entry conditions will be abolished on February 11, according to the government’s announcement.
In addition, from February 11, all persons who have not completed their immunization process against the virus will only be required to undergo a pre-departure test and a PCR test on or pre-day two after they arrive in Britain and fill in the passenger locator form. Boris Johnson says UK could send combat troops to face Russia- after minister warns Moscow’s soldiers are already in Ukraine ahead of military build-up by Nato: Boris Johnson suggested British combat troops could be sent to face down Russian forces threatening Ukraine as tensions rose between Vladimir Putin and the West.
The Prime Minister told MPs that the UK ‘would look to contribute to any new Nato deployment’ as allies readied soldiers and sent warships and fighter aircraft to the troubled region.
An estimated 100,000 Russian troops have massed at the border with Ukraine and intense diplomatic activity has failed to ease tensions. It came after a senior defence minister warned Russian advance troops are already operating in Ukraine ahead of a possible invasion. James Heappey said a ‘significant’ number of Vladimir Putin’s soldiers were already operating behind the lines. He added: ‘The British Army leads the Nato battle group in Estonia and if Russia invades Ukraine, we would look to contribute to any new Nato deployments to protect our allies in Europe. EUROPE

EU Council has adopted a new “recommendation” in another bid to facilitate safe free movement: Starting from February 1, the European Union Member States are advised to remove the current restrictions, which are based on the COVID-19 situation on the traveller’s country of departure and replace them with restrictions based on the traveller’s situation. Note: More than a dozen EU countries maintain stricter rules despite the “recommendation”.
According to today’s decision of the Council, all restrictions to free movement should be lifted for travellers holding an EU digital COVID certificate that proves the same has been vaccinated with at least two COVID-19 vaccines in the last 270 days, a certificate of recovery from COVID-19 issued in the last 180 days, or a negative result of a test taken in the last 72 hours if it is PCR or the last 24 hours if it is a rapid antigen test.
Those who do not hold an EU Digital COVID certificate will have to test for COVID-19 24 hours before or after arrival. Exempt are children under the age of 12, as well as those with an essential function or need, and cross-border commuters. U.S. in talks with energy producers to supply Europe if Russia invades Ukraine: The United States is in talks with major energy-producing countries and companies around the world over a potential diversion of supplies to Europe if Russia invades Ukraine, senior Biden administration officials said on Tuesday.
The European Union depends on Russia for around a third of its gas supplies. Any interruptions to Russia’s gas supply to Europe would exacerbate an existing energy crisis caused by a shortage.
Record power prices have driven up consumer energy bills as well as business costs and sparked protests in some countries. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/us-talks-with-energy-producers-supply-europe-if-russia-invades-ukraine-2022-01-25/

Tennis News- Australian Open day nine:
-World number one Ash Barty is within two victories of winning her home Grand Slam. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals for the second time in three years after blitzing American Jessica Pegula 6-2 6-0 in just over an hour.
-Rafa Nadal moved within two wins of a record 21st Grand Slam title by clinching a five-set thriller against Denis Shapovalov to reach the semi-finals for a seventh time. Nadal suffered a huge scare as Shapovalov roared back from two sets down but the Spanish warrior found another gear in the decider to prevail 6-3 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-3.
-Madison Keys booked her first Grand Slam semi-final spot in four years with a 6-3 6-2 upset of Barbora Krejcikova
-Seventh seed Matteo Berrettini wins over France’s Gael Monfils 6-4 6-4 3-6 3-6 6-2 on Tuesday and become the first Italian man to reach the Australian Open semi-finals. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/australian-open-day-nine-2022-01-25/

Tennis News- Denis Shapovalov makes ‘corrupt’ accusation in Australian Open loss to Rafael Nadal: Rafael Nadal was “destroyed” – and so was Denis Shapovalov’s racket. The Canadian shattered his racket in disgust after a 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3 loss to the legendary Spaniard that took four hours. Shapovalov was still furious over a lengthy seven-minute break between the fourth and fifth set.
After losing the third and fourth set, Nadal exited the court for that lengthy period, just adding to Shapovalov’s frustration on a humid night in Melbourne. Nadal then broke in the second game of the set and held on for the quarterfinal victory.
Tensions were high well before that, though. Shapovalov, 22, accused umpire Carlos Bernardes of being “corrupt” early in the second set for not punishing Nadal for taking too much time between points.
“You guys are all corrupt! You guys are all corrupt!” Shapovalov admonished the umpire after demanding that he “code” Nadal, who then exchanged words at the net with his furious opponent. Full article: https://nypost.com/2022/01/25/denis-shapovalov-makes-corrupt-accusation-in-loss-to-rafael-nadal/

FINANCIAL

Stocks fall sharply as a bout of market volatility continues: Stocks fell sharply on Wall Street Tuesday, continuing a volatile bout of trading that has sent markets swinging between steep losses and gains as investors gauge several threats.
-The S&P 500 fell 2.3% as of 12 p.m. Eastern. The benchmark index has been falling steadily ever since hitting a record high on the first trading day of the year, Jan. 3. It’s now getting closer to entering a “correction,” which among markets watchers means a drop of 10% from a peak.
-The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 481 points, or 1.4%, to 33,886. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 3%. The index entered a correction last week and is now down more than 15% from its high set on Nov. 19.
-Major indexes had a similar start to trading on Monday and were down most of the day, but a late buying spree pushed them to a higher close. That rebound may have been just a “head fake,” said Barry Bannister, chief equity strategist at Stifel. More declines are likely in store for the market, he said. Earth’s tallest mountain is in Hawaii. Here’s what it took to ascend it:
For the first time in history, the tallest mountain on Earth has been ascended.
Though Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth at 29,032 feet above sea level, Maunakea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii actually holds the title of tallest mountain on Earth at 33,500 feet.
More than half (19,698 feet) of Maunakea lies underwater, while 13,802 feet is above sea level.
Mountain climber and underwater explorer Victor Vescovo teamed up with Native Hawaiian scientist Cliff Kapono to scale Maunakea Volcano from its base at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean to its peak. While people have climbed Maunakea from its base on land to the summit, no one had done it from the ocean floor. -As for the accumulated incidence rate of infection, it has risen slightly in the region since Friday and stands at 1,976.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. By municipalities, Benamargosa with 2,671.0 and Vélez-Málaga with 2,218 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, are the ones with the worst accumulated rate of infection in the region. Covid Malaga- The Covid incidence rate in Malaga falls by almost 40 points over the weekend and there are nearly 1,500 more infected people:
{Translation, summary} 24Jan22 12:54
-The curve of the sixth wave seems to be starting to fall. Compared to last Friday there is a drop of almost 40 points and compared to a fortnight ago, the drop is 281 points. Are these sawtooths as in previous days when ups and downs were recorded or is it the beginning of the end of the sixth wave? The evolution of the pandemic will tell. On Monday, Health reported nearly 1,500 new positives, two deaths with Covid and more than 1,900 cured.
-The incidence falls in the province, in the capital and in the autonomous community. At provincial level, on Friday it was 1,213.7 positives per 100,000 inhabitants and now stands at 1,174.8; since then it has fallen 38.9 points. But compared to a fortnight ago, when the rate was 1,455.6, the drop is 280.8. In the city of Malaga it is down from 1,369.5 on Friday to 1,292.1 on Monday. It is the same tendency as in Andalusia, which between both days goes from 1,419.8 to 1,387.3 at present.
-The negative data of the report of the Consejería de Salud y Familias is that there are two more deaths with the virus. Since March 2020, 2,130 people have died of coronavirus infection in the province.
-The weekend also leaves the notification of another 1,471 positives.
-Regarding new daily hospitalisations, there are still high numbers. This Monday there are 49. In total, 12,123 people have required hospitalisation in the province throughout this health crisis. Of these, 1,095 have even had to be admitted to intensive care.
-A good fact from the daily report is that there are more cured than infected. There are 1,910 patients who have been discharged from hospital compared to the 1,471 newly infected. This ratio is positive because it means that more people are overcoming the disease than contracting it. Since Covid broke out, 185,156 patients have been cured.

SPAIN

Fake Coins- Always carefully check your change in Spain: The police force said the coins are being distributed by professional swindlers, since the shape, weight and colour (gold outer band and silver centre) is almost identical to the original. “They look like euros, but they are foreign currencies whose value is much lower,” warn the authorities.
Among them are the twenty Jamaican dollar coin (equivalent to 0.11 euros), the five peso coin from the Dominican Republic (0.076 euros), the one Venezuelan bolívar (0.19 euros) or the one Argentine peso (0. 0084).
Recently, the Guardia Civil also warned of another scam with the two-euro coins. In this case, the fraudsters passed of the Thai baht, the Egyptian pound, the 100 Chilean pesos or the Bulgarian lev, all of them with a similar appearance, but with a lower value than the legal coin.

ANDALUCIA

Andalusia opens the third vaccine against Covid to all those over 30 years of age: {Translation}
-Andalusia has opened this Monday the appointment for the third dose of the vaccine against Covid to those born in 1992, that is to say, those who turn 30 years old this year. This has been announced by the Andalusian vaccination plan (Andavac), where they specify that, in addition to making an appointment, those interested can “go directly to a specific vaccination point without an appointment”.
-In this way, vaccination against Covid is currently open to all Andalusians over 30 years of age for the third dose – and the first and second dose if they have not yet received it. Children over the age of five can also make an appointment to begin the process of immunisation against the coronavirus.
-And, at any time, healthcare workers, the elderly and people with special pathologies can make an appointment to be inoculated.
-In any case, there are certain requirements for making an appointment for the third dose:
1. If you were given Pfizer or Moderna, at least five months must have passed since the second dose. The third dose can be either Pfizer or Moderna.
2. If you were given AstraZeneca, three months must have passed. Pfizer or Moderna will be used for the booster dose.
3. If you were given AstraZeneca and then Pfizer or Moderna in the second dose: five months must have passed since the second jab. The third will be Pfizer and Moderna.
4. If you were given Janssen: three months must have passed and in this case it will be Pfizer or Moderna.
-What if I have had Covid? In this case, the Consejería de Salud y Familias also has several options:
1. If you are over 65 years old: you are vaccinated now as if you had not passed the Covid. If the disease is very recent, a booster dose will be given “if they are well and are not in isolation”.
2. 65 years of age or younger: if they were infected before the start of the vaccination process, the booster dose will be given five months after the last dose. It will be Pfizer or Moderna. If you were infected after the start of the immunisation process, at least four weeks must have passed since you were infected or diagnosed with Covid. WikiLeaks’ Assange gets chance to take extradition case to UK’s top court: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Monday was given the chance to challenge at Britain’s highest court a decision allowing him to be extradited to the United States to face 18 criminal charges including breaking a spying law. While High Court judges refused him permission for a direct appeal to the Supreme Court on their decision, they said his case raised an issue of legal importance that he could ask the United Kingdom’s top court to rule on. This means the Supreme Court will have to decide whether or not it should hear his challenge. EUROPE

France bars unvaccinated from restaurants, sports venues: The new law came into effect Monday requiring a “vaccine pass” that is central to the government’s anti-virus strategy.
Since last summer, France has required a “health pass” to go to any cafe, museum, movie theater or take a regional train or domestic flight. But until Monday, unvaccinated people could activate the pass by getting a recent negative test. The new pass only works for people who are fully vaccinated, and those who recently recovered from the virus. Full article:

Irish Version of  ‘Weekend At Bernie’s’- ‘I wasn’t trying to rob him… I’m not an eejit!’ Irishman who brought his dead uncle into a post office to collect his pension insists he was alive when they set off but then ‘went a bit slumpy’: A man who, along with an associate, dragged his uncle’s corpse to a post office to collect his pension has insisted he ‘didn’t know he was dead’ and was ‘not an eejit’ who was trying to rob him.
Both men had previously gone into the post office and tried to get the money but staff told them they needed Mr Doyle there himself or his next of kin there.
Afterwards, it is alleged they went to Mr Doyle’s home and carried him along a public footpath before they again tried to claim his pension.
Declan H., 40, claimed he was not trying to rob Doyle., 66, after he and his friend Gareth C. propped the pensioner up.
They were on a five-minute walk between Mr Doyle’s home and Hosey’s post office in Carlow, Ireland, 50 miles south of Dublin, when the pensioner ‘went a bit slumpy’. TECH

Microsoft force installs Windows 10 version 21H2 on 20H2 devices: Microsoft announced this week via the company’s Windows Update Twitter channel that it is rolling out Windows 10 version 21H2 to devices running the older 20H2 version of the Windows 10 operating system.
Windows 10 version 20H2 devices will be upgraded automatically to Windows 10 version 21H2 according to the tweet. (This could cause problems if you have a weak internet connection, as it is a large download, and it can be corrupted by interruptions. Also, some computers from the Vista and early Win 7 eras (pre 2014) are having problems with the newest version of Win 10- version 21H2. -Naythan)

$130 billion wiped off crypto markets in 24 hours as Bitcoin, Ether drop to multi-month lows: Bitcoin was last down around another 4% at $33,755.57, according to Coin Metrics, while Ether plunged another 7% to $2,239.08. Earlier in the morning, they fell to their lowest points since July. They are also about 50% off their respective all-time highs.
Cryptocurrencies are moving in tandem with stocks, which have continued to fall since the beginning of the year and just came off of their worst week since March 2020.
Investors are also assessing the impact of further regulation on the cryptocurrency market. Last week, Russia’s central bank proposed banning the use and mining of cryptocurrencies. Wild ride as Dow drops 1,000 points but recovers and closes up 99: The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped more than 1,000 points Monday as financial markets buckled in anticipation of inflation-fighting measures from the Federal Reserve and fretted over the possibility of conflict between Russia and Ukraine. [UPDATE: Dow recovered and closed up 99 points for the day.]
Stocks extended their three-week decline on Wall Street, the price of oil and bitcoin fell, and so did the yield on 10-year Treasury notes, a sign of investor concern about the economy. SPAIN

The State of The Self Employed- In Spain they will pay three times as much as in the UK and twice as much as in France and Germany, received far less financial support: [ABCdesevilla ECONOMÍA]
{Translation in full} 23/01/2022 09:40h
-Nobody said that being self-employed was an easy task, quite the contrary. Raising the shutters every day is becoming a heroic deed in a country still strangled by a virus that came from Wuhan and turned the world upside down. Now, the government is proposing a new system of contributions based on real income that could be the final blow for a group that generates a third of employment in Spain, a country that already stands out for having the highest quotas in Europe. If Escrivá’s reform succeeds, a self-employed person in Spain will pay three times as much as in the UK and twice as much as in France and Germany.
-The proposal on the table puts an end to the voluntary choice of contribution base for the three million self-employed and replaces the model with 13 income brackets (which would be the equivalent of the current bases), each with an assigned monthly quota.
-The changes will not be immediate; they will be rolled out over a period of nine years, between 2023 and 2031, and the argument for doing so is that the regime in which these workers pay contributions causes a hole in the system of 10,000 million.
-The scheme designed by minister Escrivá aims to ensure that those self-employed workers earning between 900 and 1,125.90 euros will pay a lower contribution than at present and the rest will pay more. According to Social Security calculations, this will mean that two thirds of the current self-employed will see their contribution reduced and the remaining third will see it significantly increased. A very different calculation to that made by ATA, which claims that the contribution will rise for half of the workers, “a ruin”, said its president, Lorenzo Amor, in an interview with ABC. He explained that 1.8 million will suffer an increase of 40% in two years and 1.4 million a reduction of just 10% and warned that with this reform many self-employed will have to spend almost 70% of their turnover to pay income tax and contributions. On average, more than half will have to spend 50%, he warned. If we only talk about contributions, with the Government’s proposal, a self-employed person will have to spend between 30% and 40% of their income to pay this tax, says Amor.
-For example, a self-employed person earning 400 euros a month will have to pay 183.60 euros a month in 2031, 45% of what he or she earns. And a self-employed person earning 1,700 euros will have to pay Social Security 535 euros a month in the same period, 31% more.
***Astronomical electricity and fuel bills***
The new model that the government and the self-employed will continue to negotiate tomorrow comes at a time when one in three self-employed workers say they are still far from recovering their pre-covid activity and after two years in which they have been subjected to the toughest resistance tests in existence, in a journey through the desert full of obstacles. Fewer sales in many cases, but fried with taxes and duties and facing astronomical electricity and fuel bills and higher labour costs. And the public aid received has been much less than that approved in other countries such as France and Germany, which from the beginning of the health crisis heeded the call of their businesses and approved direct non-refundable aid, which Sánchez denied them in Spain. When pressure forced him to do so, more than a year later, he put into circulation a package of 7 billion euros that, in the end, did not reach its destination. The conditions of access have prevented 90% of the self-employed from taking advantage of them.
-During the pandemic, they also demanded a tax cut that never came, unlike countries such as Germany, which reinforced the shield of protection for its business fabric with a reduction of VAT to 7% for bars and restaurants until 2023. Support for SMEs and the self-employed in Spain took the form of ICO loans, which will have to be repaid from April or May onwards, although many are in dire straits, and the unemployment benefit, which some 100,000 self-employed workers are still receiving. The question is what will happen when this extraordinary shield is withdrawn this year.
-But what is the difference between what a self-employed person pays in Spain and in the rest of Europe? The big difference is that a self-employed person in Spain has to pay a monthly contribution, which in comparison with our neighbours is not exactly cheap (294 euros per month, almost 60 euros per year more than in 2021). In Germany, for example, this contribution is 140 euros from 1,700 euros of monthly income and below that amount is not paid.
-More is paid into the social security system, but the self-employed in Spain also enjoy more protection. The reforms adopted over the last two decades have created a framework that is among the most advanced in the EU in terms of equalising nominal social rights with respect to salaried workers. They have access to benefits for retirement, maternity or paternity leave, accidents at work, unemployment cover, and unemployment benefits.
***Casado supports ATA***
The minister’s intentions have already been highly criticised by most of the parties present in the Toledo Pact and has put the collective on the warpath. The last one was Pablo Casado. The leader of the PP took a stand with ATA and announced, after a meeting with the organisation, that his party will not accept a rise in quotas for the self-employed or that they should be “the payers of Pedro Sánchez’s wastefulness”. He believes that it would be “the last straw for three million Spaniards already on the edge” and proposed extending the flat rate, lowering taxes and social contributions, as well as postponing the repayment of ICO loans.

ANDALUCIA

The new Andalusian law on assistance dogs entered into force yesterday, these are the new features: {Translation in full}
-The new Andalusian law on assistance dogs for people with disabilities, which includes among its beneficiaries people with other disabilities in addition to visual impairment, comes into force this Sunday, 23 January, setting a deadline of one year for local authorities to adapt their municipal ordinances.
-The new law changes the concept of ‘guide dog’ to ‘assistance dog’, with the aim of favouring the accessibility and mobility of this group through animal assistance and facilitating that they can live independently and participate fully in society on equal terms.
-The law replaces Law 5/1998, of 23 November, on the use of guide dogs in Andalusia by people with visual impairment to extend it also to other people who, due to other disabilities or certain health conditions such as epilepsy or diabetes, require the assistance of dogs to facilitate their free and safe movement in different environments.
-Law 4/2017, of 25 September, on the Rights and Care of People with Disabilities in Andalusia defines assistance dogs as those that have been trained in officially approved centres for the accompaniment, driving, help and assistance of people with disabilities, and are identified with an official badge.
-The new regulation expressly obliges the promotion of their use with the guarantee that they are allowed free access to all places, accommodation, establishments, premises, transport and other public spaces without incurring additional costs.
-The legal text establishes different categories of assistance dogs and their training; establishes the right of access in their company in the different public and private environments for collective use; specifies the rights, obligations and responsibility for the use of these animals, their health conditions and their training; defines the procedure for recognition, suspension and loss of the status of assistance dog; creates the Register of Assistance Dogs of Andalusia and includes the sanctioning regime in this area.
-With regard to the working environment, it specifies that a user may not be discriminated against in job selection processes or in the performance of his or her professional duties on the grounds that he or she is accompanied by an assistance dog. Among other measures, it establishes the obligation to have a civil liability insurance policy to cover possible damages caused by the dog in accordance with the provisions.
-The new regulation recognises and protects the track record of excellence of the training centres of the Spanish National Organisation for the Blind (ONCE) and is compatible with the regulations on the protection and health of canine companion animals, applicable to assistance dogs in all matters not expressly regulated therein. Dogs used in animal-assisted therapy are excluded, as they are governed by their own specific regulations.
-The regulation provides for information campaigns on the content of the law, especially aimed at educational establishments, catering establishments, shops, transport and public services. Covid Protests Across EU- Water cannon & tear gas used in Brussels:
– Police fired water cannons and tear gas in Brussels on Sunday to disperse protesters marching against COVID-19 vaccinations and restrictions.
-The march followed demonstrations in Barcelona, Seville, Athens, Helsinki, London, Paris and Stockholm on Saturday that also drew thousands of people protesting vaccine passports and other requirements that European governments have imposed in hopes of ending the coronavirus pandemic.
-In Brussels, demonstrators chanted “Liberty!” as they marched. White-helmeted police riot officers later sought to disperse protesters, who ignored instructions broadcast over loudspeakers that the demonstration was finished and that they should leave. Tennis News- Djokovic will reportedly be allowed to compete at this year’s French Open: Novak Djokovic will be able to defend his French Open title at this year’s tournament regardless of whether or not he is vaccinated against COVID-19, according to reports.
France’s vaccine passport can be attributed to those who have recovered from Covid in the last six months, according to La Gazetta.
This suggests that Djokovic will experience little difficulty in entering the country after returning a positive test in mid-December.
It is claimed that he will be able to travel to France until at least mid-June if he remains unvaccinated under the new regulations. The French Open is scheduled to begin on May 22nd and end on June 5th. Full article:
