COVID-19
Covid Andalucia- Andalucía adds 7,416 Covid infections in 24 hours, the lowest number in two weeks: 19Jan22 14:17
-Andalucía has this Wednesday, 19 January, registered a total of 7,416 coronavirus infections in 24 hours, the lowest number in two weeks.
-The region has also added 28 coronavirus deaths, down one on the number recorded the day before. Regarding the 28 deaths in the last day, Malaga and Seville were the provinces with the most with six each, followed by Cordoba with five, Almeria and Granada with three each, Cadiz and Jaén with two each and Huelva with one.
-The 14-day incidence rate has fallen again for the second consecutive day after rising on Monday, following six days of drops. It stands at 1,364.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down some 87 compared to Tuesday.
-There has been an increase of 60 coronavirus patients hospitalised in the last 24 hours to make a total of 2,091, which represents 367 more compared to the same day last week, while the number of patients in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has dropped by five to 231, some four more than a week ago. Covid Malaga- Malaga adds 72 hospitalisations with Covid in one day, the highest number in five months: {Translation} 19Jan22 13:40
-72 new hospitalisations in just one day. This is the number of patients admitted with Covid to Malaga’s hospitals in the last few hours, the highest in five months. It is bad news. The positive aspect – within the personal tragedies of this health crisis – is that there is now a similar number of hospitalised patients as in mid-August, despite the fact that the rate is now double what it was then. Six more deaths and 1,105 new infections are to be regretted, although the incidence is down.
-At present, with a rate of 1,171.9 positives per 100,000 inhabitants, there are 436 patients admitted to health centres in the province. In mid-August there were similar figures for hospital admissions, but with half the incidence. For example, on the 13th of that month, 441 patients were hospitalised, with a rate of 576.1. .
-But the number of hospitalised patients continues to rise. A week ago there were 393 at the provincial level. Now there are 436, of which 43 are in ICU. So the pressure on care continues to rise. In Intensive Care there are three fewer patients than on Tuesday, although this is not always good news as some are those who have died.
-After the six deaths in the last few hours, the death toll from the virus now stands at 2,111 for almost two years.
-One encouraging aspect is that the provincial rate is dropping. Whereas on Tuesday it was 1,256.1 positives per 100,000 inhabitants, it now stands at 1,171.9. It also falls in the capital: from 1,435.5 to 1,351.2.
-As for new infections, a further 1,105 have been reported, bringing the total since March 2020 to 221,956. This represents a decrease compared to previous days. Two nuances must be taken into account: on the one hand, the spread of the virus seems to have stabilised or declined, and on the other hand, there is under-diagnosis, as many positive results from self-testing of antigens that are mild are not reported to the registration system. The Health Delegate, Carlos Bautista, admitted that this could be the reason why the cases could be double or triple the official figures.
-There are more cured. Exactly 124 from Tuesday to Wednesday. This is much less than the 1,105 newly infected. This is not a positive figure because it means that more people are contracting the disease than overcoming it. SPAIN
Spain to Shorten Vaccination Certificates’ Validity From February 1: Following the European Union Commission’s recommendation, the Spanish authorities have announced that starting from February 1, only vaccination certificates indicating that a person has been fully vaccinated against the virus within the last 270 days will be recognised.
This means that all persons, regardless of their country of origin, who have received their last vaccine dose more than nine months ago will need to get a booster shot to be permitted entry to Spain.
Nonetheless, it has been emphasised that the certificate which proves that the holder has received a booster dose will be recognised only if more than 14 days have passed since its administration. Spanish Politics- The Andalusian PP claims “President Pedro Sánchez uses European funds for the electoral recovery of the PSOE”:
{Translation} 19/01/2022 16:20
-The Andalusian PP has denounced what it considers to be the “opacity” of the Government in the distribution of European funds, a lack of information that harms Andalusia. This was stated by the PP spokesman in the Andalusian Parliament, José Antonio Nieto, who considers that Pedro Sánchez “does not use European funds for the recovery of Spain, but for the electoral recovery of the PSOE”, and has supported the PP’s proposal to go take this to court by different regional governments.
-The PP spokesman demanded “transparency” and stressed that the Spanish government is the one that is managing these funds “with more delay, more opacity and less intelligence” in the European Union.
-José Antonio Nieto has also accused the Andalusian PSOE of being complicit in this management that harms Andalusia.
-“It says not a word about this, nor about the discrimination against Andalusia in the investment for suburban trains, nor about the worst energy crisis we have suffered since the 1970s,” he said, referring to the “record price” of electricity and fuel.
-Likewise, he reproached the Socialists for being focused on “a self-serving campaign to launch an impossible candidate”, while Andalusia “continues to suffer unjustifiable mistreatment from the Spanish Government at the height of the sixth wave, as we still do not receive a single extra euro for the fight against Covid”. The DGT’s Traffic Law has made changes to cars labelled B and C in 2022: In the coming months importance will be attached to the anti-pollution protocols of cities regarding the regulations and of cars labelled B and C. B vehicles correspond to gasoline registered since 2000 and diesel from 2006 and C vehicles are gasoline since 2006 and diesel from 2015.
Low emission zones have been created in municipalities with more than 50,000 people, so many cities in Spain will be affected when they implement their zones.
In these areas, vehicles with labels B and C have limited circulation.
The new Traffic Law will come into force on March 21 and, from that moment, the fines of up to €200 will begin for entering these areas with B and C cars, although there are municipalities that have a lower penalty charge. What does the end of Plan B restrictions in England mean?: Mr Johnson made the announcement in parliament on Wednesday (19 January) that Plan B restrictions will be scrapped.
One of the key measures being removed is mandatory face masks in public areas. This means that people will no longer be fined for not wearing a face mask in places such as public transport. Schoolchildren will also no longer be expected to wear face coverings while in school.
The Prime Minister also said the government was scrapping working from home guidance effective immediately, with employees able to return to offices and workplaces as normal.
The compulsory use of Covid passes, which show the vaccination status of the user, to access venues such as stadiums and nightclubs will also be removed, although Mr Johnson did state that venues could choose to still use this measure if they wish. EUROPE
A more contagious omicron subvariant is rapidly gaining ground in Norway: A subvariant of the omicron variant that is more contagious than the original variant is rapidly gaining ground in Norway, the National Institute of Public Health (FHI) warned in its weekly report.
In its report, the FHI writes that there were seven cases of the subvariant on January 4 but that the figure increased to 611 cases on January 19.
The virus variant, called BA. 2, has mainly been confirmed in Oslo.
The subvariant’s properties are unknown, other than the fact that it is more contagious than the original omicron variant (BA. 1). It is also on the rise in Denmark and Sweden, according to the FHI. New Omicron strain detected in Portugal: The Omicron variant of coronavirus is now responsible for 93 percent of infections in Portugal and another strain has been detected with similar genetic characteristics.
The BA.2 strain has already been detected in several countries, including the United Kingdom and Denmark. When Omicron (BA.1) was identified in mid-November 2021, another lineage (BA.2) was detected with several genetic characteristics similar to each other and that present an “excess” of mutations in the spike. Sweden Removes Pre-Entry Testing Requirement: “Travellers are no longer considered to represent a particular risk that would affect the spread of the Omicron variant in Sweden. For this reason, the specific requirement for a negative COVID-19 result from a test conducted within 48 hours of arrival to Sweden is no longer considered to be a proportional measure,” the statement of the Ministry reads.
Nonetheless, it has been emphasised that all persons who reach Sweden from European Union and European Economic Area countries are still required to present the EU Digital COVID Certificate upon their entry.

Blood sample will reveal in advance whether a patient will survive Covid or not: {Translation, summary} 19Jan22 14:04
-A revolutionary system could be a turning point in predicting the outcome of Covid patients admitted to hospital. European scientists have shown that blood samples from a seriously ill Covid patient, specifically the proteins in their blood plasma, can be analysed with a machine learning model to predict weeks in advance whether the person will survive or not. The results are published in the scientific journal PLOS Digital Health, according to Agencia Sinc.
-“Our study shows that a combination of proteomic markers, combined in an artificial intelligence-based risk prediction model, can predict quite well the probability of an individual patient dying or surviving covid,” says co-author Florian Kurth from the Charité University Hospital in Berlin (Germany). Furthermore, the proteomic risk prediction was much better than the prognosis derived from risk assessment scores commonly used in clinical care,” he says.
-“Interestingly, the plasma levels of all these proteins had been altered by the disease before, depending on the severity, which makes us confident in our findings,” says Kurth, who explains: “The proteins with the highest relevance in the prediction model belong to the coagulation system and the so-called complement cascade or complement system (a component of the immune response). Both are known to be particularly important for the pathophysiology and severity of covid-19”.
-The team then developed their machine learning model to predict survival from a single temporal measurement of the relevant proteins, and tested it in Austria on 24 patients critically ill with coronavirus. For this group, the model demonstrated high predictive power, correctly predicting 18 of the 19 patients who survived and five of the five people who died.

Think Djokovic Is Ignorant On Covid? Think Again: Tennis champion Novak Djokovic has an 80% stake of cutting edge Danish biotech firm QuantBioRes, purchased in 2020, which is aiming to develop a medical treatment to counter COVID-19, the company’s chief executive told Reuters on Wednesday.
QuantBioRes has around 11 researchers working in labs in Denmark, Australia and Slovenia, working on a treatment, not a vaccine. The company is developing a peptide, which inhibits the coronavirus from infecting the human cell, and expects to launch clinical trials in Britain this summer.
Djok stoked global debate over the rights of people who opt not to get vaccinated as governments look to protect the community from the coronavirus pandemic. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/djokovic-buys-80-danish-biotech-developing-covid-19-treatment-ceo-2022-01-19/
Omicron breakthrough cases show mRNA vaccines’ weakness: The findings suggest we need to continue fighting the pandemic with measures besides vaccination.
-Booster shots with messenger RNA vaccines such as those made by Pfizer and BioNTech failed to block omicron in a study of some of the first documented breakthrough cases caused by the highly contagious variant.
Seven German visitors to Cape Town experienced symptomatic Covid-19 infections between late November and early December despite being boosted, the researchers, whose investigation was authorized by the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University, said in findings published Tuesday in The Lancet.
-Preliminary data from an Israeli trial involving 154 health workers — released Monday, just two weeks after that study began — showed that a fourth dose of Pfizer’s shot didn’t prevent infection with omicron. Still, those in the trial had mild symptoms or none at all. Full article: https://www.boston.com/news/coronavirus/2022/01/19/study-omicron-breakthrough-cases-show-mrna-vaccines-weakness/
