ALMERIA
Controversial hotel project in Spain’s Cabo de Gata natural park gets new push: A controversial hotel project in Spain’s Cabo de Gata-Níjar natural park, in the southeastern province of Almería, is one step closer to going ahead. The project aims to transform a run-down cortijo into a 30-room hotel with 70 parking spaces in the heart of the protected ecosystem. Consisting of several buildings that were formerly used as a rope factory and a farm, the hotel would stand about 900 meters from Los Genoveses beach, one of the best-preserved environmental gems in the Andalusia region.
The regional government has made its approval conditional on the developers obtaining authorization for the reuse of treated water and also on the project being declared of public interest, formalities that should go smoothly given the Andalusian government’s support. The plan has, however, been condemned by numerous environmental associations and over 250,000 people have protested against it on the petition platform Change.org. Photo:Nuria Talavera. New luxury eco-glamping project in Rincon de la Victoria:
{Glamping is outdoor camping with amenities and comforts such as beds, electricity, and access to indoor plumbing, not usually used when camping. -Ed.}
A new glamping project with “luxury tents” has been given the green light in Rincon de la Victoria. The project already has the approval of the council and the Andalucian Government and now it’s time to process the permits and outline the financing. The objective of its promoters is to be able to open it next June, coinciding with the start of the summer season.
The chosen place is Finca La Paca in Benagalbon and the plot has an area of 29,525 square metres on which 2,512 square metres will be built.
It will be built with ecological materials, renewable energy and waste recycling, with customers able to enjoy the outdoors, cultivate gardens, shop at a local market and dine in the restaurant. Photo:gearjunkie.

Netherlands lifts toughest Covid curbs with Denmark and France set to follow: The Netherlands has lifted its toughest Covid controls, Denmark is to remove all restrictions within days and France will begin easing curbs next week.
-Dutch bars, restaurants and museums were allowed to reopen on Wednesday. Cafes, bars and restaurants closed since mid-December can now reopen with reduced capacity and until 10pm as long as customers have a Covid pass, with cinemas, theatres, museums and sports events also allowed to welcome the public back.
-The Danish government, which two weeks ago allowed cinemas and music venues to reopen after a month’s closure, also announced on Wednesday plans to scrap remaining domestic coronavirus controls from 1 February. The move – which must be approved by parliament – will allow nightclubs to reopen, restaurants to serve alcohol after 10pm, and shops to lift limits on customer numbers. Vaccine passes will no longer be needed, and commuters may travel without wearing masks.
-Belgium last week announced a slight easing of its restrictions from Friday despite record infections, with bars and restaurants allowed to stay open until midnight and indoor activities such as play areas and bowling alleys to reopen.
-France’s vaccine pass, required since Monday to enter restaurants, cinemas and other public venues, would allow from 2 February audience capacity limits for concert halls and sports and other events to be lifted, with working from home also no longer mandatory for many employees and face masks not needed outside.
