We meet every Tuesday at 07:00 hrs at Lux Mundi in Torre del Mar.
Helping English-speaking businesses grow locally and internationally. The networking is open to local businesses and the self-employed who are looking for support, assistance, and wanting to expand their networks.
Over the past few weeks we have shared each others’ successes, offered support and advice regarding that often nerve-wracking moment when you wonder whether you’ve quoted the right amount for the work. (We all know a lot more goes into quoting than the client sees).
Kelvin Chambers from Blevins Franks also gave us an update on the market fluctuations following Trump’s tariffs announcements.
The following week, we had some great marketing opportunities to share for members.
Plus, we had an interesting discussion about technology and how it helps or hinders our different professions.
Naturally, a lot of it centred around AI – but discussions about project management tools v post-it notes, pieces of paper v databases highlighted some interesting work behaviours!
We also shared future plans for an ‘open day’ and other plans for the Axarquia Business Networking group.
If you’d like to support, learn, brainstorm and grow your business, join us every Tuesday and start your day on a positive note. There is a small monthly cost to cover the use of the premise and drinks.

SPAIN

Congress Hopelessly Divided? Congress to hold two inquiries into the blackout due to disagreement between the Government and PP to merge their commission proposals: {Translation, summary}
– The Spanish Congress has approved two separate investigative commissions into the 28 April blackout, reflecting deep political disagreement between the People’s Party (PP) and the coalition Government (PSOE and Sumar). The PP’s commission focuses sharply on the Government and Red Eléctrica’s possible responsibility, intending to call key figures such as Teresa Ribera, former Government Vice-President, and Beatriz Corredor, current chair of Red Eléctrica. The PP accuses the Government of failing to respond adequately and causing severe consequences, including deaths and major disruption.
– Conversely, the Government’s commission aims to investigate all administrations involved, including regional governments that ceded powers during the emergency, and energy companies broadly, without singling out Red Eléctrica. It stresses the need for a thorough, impartial inquiry, rejecting pre-judged blame.
– Both commissions will operate in parallel, with six-month deadlines, but mutual distrust prevails. Some parliamentary groups warn against politicisation, calling the PP’s approach “hyperbolic” and the Government’s proposal potentially ineffective. The PP also criticises the Government-led investigation for alleged bias and a supposed pact with Red Eléctrica to avoid accountability, which Government officials deny vehemently.
– This dual investigation reflects the political polarisation surrounding the blackout, complicating efforts to reach a unified understanding of its causes and responsibilities. The investigation continues without identifying causes one month after the blackout- the Government exonerates Red Eléctrica and points the finger at energy companies: {Translation, summary}
– One month after the historic Iberian blackout on 28 April, Spain’s government investigation has yet to identify the exact cause but has cleared Red Eléctrica, the grid operator, of responsibility. Instead, it points to electricity producers and distributors as likely involved. The blackout was triggered by a severe frequency disturbance around 12:30 pm that the system could not recover from. The government rules out insufficient generation or lack of inertia and prioritises hypotheses involving network overvoltage or failures in protective circuit breakers. Electricity companies reject fault in their installations and criticise the investigation’s narrow focus on the 20 seconds before the blackout, urging examination of earlier related events. The Ministry’s inquiry centres on two network disturbances detected in southern provinces before the collapse, with the second causing strong voltage oscillations. A report to the European Commission is expected within two months, while the broader European investigation will take six months. The incident has exposed tensions between the government, grid operator, and electricity companies over responsibility and transparency. Extraordinary heat episode- the next few days can be the hottest for a month of May since 1950: {Translation, summary}
– Spain is facing an early and intense heatwave, with temperatures between 29 May and 1 June possibly reaching the highest levels recorded for this period since 1950, according to Aemet. Daytime highs could soar up to 40°C, accompanied by tropical nights above 20°C across much of the country.
– On Thursday the thermal rebound will be consolidated, especially in the peninsular north, and tropical nights will generalize in communities such as Andalusia and Extremadura. In many parts of the country, the minimum and maximum temperatures will be between 5 and 10 degrees above the usual, and even more in some specific areas.
– This extraordinary heat episode is driven by high pressure and a warm, dry air mass arriving from North Africa, pushing temperatures 6 to 7 degrees above average, especially in large river valleys.
– The hottest days will be Thursday and Friday, with some areas exceeding 38°C, including Seville, where 40°C is rare in May. While rain will be scarce, isolated showers may occur in mountainous regions, with storms possible towards the weekend as cooler air arrives. Despite this, intense heat will persist over most of Spain, marking a premature start to summer and raising concerns over health and environmental impacts. The judge investigating former Secretary of State, Francisco Martínez, collecting evidence demonstrating the sale of sensitive information from public bodies by high officials- hacks are often inside jobs: {Translation, summary}
– The National Court has ordered the arrest of former Interior Secretary Francisco Martínez {pic}, hacker José Luis Huertas (‘Alcasec’), and two others as part of a secret investigation into the sale of sensitive information from public and private organisations.
– The operation, involving the National Police, Prosecutor’s Office, and Investigative Court, also led to arrests in Andorra, including YouTuber Álvaro Martín.
– The case began after a public institution reported illicit access and massive data theft of mobile phone users. The criminal network developed a sophisticated platform to store, index, and sell personalised data profiles, accessible via encrypted bots on social media. The group operated like a private intelligence agency, with roles in technology management, anonymity tools, crypto-finance, legal advice, and international expansion.
– Martínez allegedly helped set up companies for ‘Alcasec’ but denies managing them. Authorities seized the network’s servers and databases despite advanced security measures. The investigation covers crimes including money laundering, criminal organisation, illegal computer access, and data theft, with international cooperation from Andorra, Switzerland, and Italy. HUELVA

Second forest fire in Huelva in just one day- the Cruz del Arpa area in Moguer is still burning: {Translation}
– Teams from the Infoca Plan are working to extinguish a forest fire in the Cruz del Arpa area of Moguer, Huelva, which was declared around 4:10 pm this Tuesday. This area is adjacent to Las Malvinas, where firefighters on Monday extinguished another fire that had eight different ignition points and affected 30 seasonal workers when their shacks caught fire.
– According to Infoca on X (formerly Twitter), four groups of forest firefighters, two operations technicians, two environmental agents, and a medium-weight helicopter have been deployed to the area.
– This is the second fire Moguer has suffered in just 24 hours, and the Civil Guard “does not rule out any hypothesis,” according to María José Rico, the Government’s Deputy Delegate in Huelva, who spoke on Tuesday. The fire on Monday was declared extinguished around 10:45 pm, having burnt between 15 and 20 hectares of forest and pine woodland.
– She also explained that the Monday fire had eight ignition points “along a rural path,” which “makes it more difficult to analyse a single cause,” and that “once the Civil Guard has sufficient information, it will share it,” while highlighting that “fortunately, there were no casualties to lament.” Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5716293/0/incendio-paraje-cruz-arpa-moguer/

UKRAINE WAR

US and Russia clash in public as the Ukraine war heats up:
– The United States and Russia quarrelled in public on Wednesday over the intensifying Ukraine war after U.S. President Donald Trump warned that President Vladimir Putin was “playing with fire” and Moscow massed 50,000 troops near a Ukrainian region.
– While world leaders bicker over the prospects for peace, the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two is heating up fast: swarms of drones are being launched by both sides while Russia is advancing at key points along the front.
– Russia said it had downed 296 Ukrainian drones over 13 regions overnight while Ukraine said Russia had launched 88 drones and five ballistic missiles.
– After Russia ejected Ukrainian forces from the western Kursk region, Moscow’s forces have pushed over the border into neighbouring Sumy region of northeastern Ukraine and taken several villages there. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that Russia has gathered 50,000 troops near the northern Sumy region, but added that Kyiv had taken steps to prevent Moscow from conducting a large-scale offensive there.
– Russia currently controls just under one fifth of Ukraine. Though Russian advances have accelerated over the past year, the war is costing both Russia and Ukraine dearly in terms of casualties and military spending.

HEALTH

Andalusian health will have fewer funds for summer reinforcements and will close 75% of its health centers: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian Government has announced a slightly reduced budget of €135 million for the 2025 Summer Plan of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS), down from €144 million in 2024, resulting in fewer temporary contracts to cover staff holidays—36,500 compared to 37,300 last year. Despite this, the government argues the budget matches the actual expenditure in 2024 and reflects improved staff stability, reducing the need for extraordinary hires. Compared to 2017, the number of contracts has increased by 15%.
– Only 2.9% of contracts are for doctors, with the majority allocated to nurses (35%) and nursing care technicians (33%). The government maintains that the contract volume is similar to last year and will adjust resources if demand exceeds expectations. Contracts are distributed unevenly across months and provinces, with the highest numbers in July and August.
– A significant change is that 75% of the 1,513 primary care centres will close in the afternoon, with only 392 centres open from 3 pm to 8 pm, a slight increase from last year. This reorganisation aims to align resources with population shifts during the summer holidays, particularly to coastal areas.
– Hospital bed availability remains high, with an estimated 11,700 beds available during summer and operating theatres running at 75% capacity, enabling thousands of surgeries and diagnostic tests. “At the Bottom in All Indicators”- A Report Warns of the “Critical State” of Public Healthcare in Andalusia: {Translation, summary}
– A comprehensive report by Andalusian unions reveals the public healthcare system in Andalusia is in a “critical state,” ranking lowest among Spain’s regions on multiple indicators. The report, based on official data, highlights chronic underfunding, staff shortages, increasing privatisation, and deteriorating health outcomes.
– In 2024, Andalusians rated their healthcare system 5.72/10, the lowest in Spain and declining since 2022, contrasting with national improvements. Andalusia’s healthcare budget per capita in 2025 is €1,748, significantly below the national average and far less than the highest-spending regions. Nearly half of recent budget increases have been diverted to private providers and pharmaceutical costs, limiting investment in infrastructure and staff.
– Staffing shortages are severe: Andalusia has the fewest doctors and nurses per 1,000 inhabitants in Spain, with a shortfall of 18,000 healthcare professionals needed to reach national averages. The region also experiences the highest net loss of nursing staff, worsening service delivery.
– Waiting times are the longest nationally, with average waits of 10.66 days for GP appointments and 176 days for surgery, with a third of surgical patients waiting over six months. Over one million people are on healthcare waiting lists, representing 12.6% of the population.
– Health outcomes reflect these challenges: Andalusia has the highest adjusted mortality rate in Spain and lower life expectancy than the national average. Chronic diseases are more prevalent, and attacks on healthcare workers have surged.
– The unions call for an urgent, well-funded recovery plan, requiring over €1.6 billion annually to reach national investment levels and over €4 billion to match comparable regions. They stress funds must strengthen the public system, focusing on rehiring pandemic-era staff, improving pay and job stability, reducing waiting lists, and investing in infrastructure and technology to reverse the system’s decline. A young man’s testicle is valued at only €38,000 by court: {Translation, summary}
– A hospital in Murcia and its insurance company have been ordered to pay €38,000 in compensation to the parents of a boy who lost a testicle due to a delayed diagnosis. The minor was initially diagnosed with constipation during emergency visits on 13 and 14 October 2019, but he was actually suffering from testicular torsion—a medical emergency requiring prompt treatment.
– The defendants claimed all necessary tests were performed and torsion was not suspected because the boy did not report testicular pain.
– However, the Murcia Provincial Court rejected this, noting the boy had reported discomfort and lower back pain and that more thorough examinations should have been conducted when his condition failed to improve. The delay caused irreversible damage, leading to the loss of the testicle. The court sided with the plaintiffs’ expert, a judicial medical specialist, over the defendants’ paediatrician’s report, and ordered the hospital and insurer to cover legal costs. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/salud/actualidad/perdio-un-testiculo-porque-le-diagnosticaron-estrenimiento-tendra-que-ser-indemnizado-con-38-000-euros-5716605/

Editors Note: Health delays
– While the gov’t & hospital admins put out press releases that claim Health is reducing waiting times for health appointments & procedures, the Unions of doctors, nurses & hospital workers contradict this. The unions claim waits are as long, or even longer than ever. The Unions also point out that with summer cutbacks on services and workers, delays are certain to grow at that time.
– This explains the growing popularity of private health services over public. This is also why it is a good idea to have a private insurance plan in addition to your public health card. You can get a private plan to use in emergencies; a ‘high deductible’ private plan is budget friendly yet will provide you with a ‘fast’ health services option, and probably superior service at that, should a serious issue arise.

Suspected InfoStealer Malware Data Breach Exposed 184 Million Logins and Passwords:
– Jeremiah Fowler, the author of this article, is a Security Researcher and co-founder of Security Discovery. Jeremiah began his career in security research in 2015 and has a mission of data protection. He has helped identify and secure the data of millions of people around the world. His discoveries have been covered in Forbes, BBC, Gizmodo, among others.
– The publicly exposed database was not password-protected or encrypted. It contained 184,162,718 unique logins and passwords, totaling a massive 47.42 GB of raw credential data. In a limited sampling of the exposed documents, I saw thousands of files that included emails, usernames, passwords, and the URL links to the login or authorization for the accounts. The database contained login and password credentials for a wide range of services, applications, and accounts, including email providers, Microsoft products, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Roblox, and many more. I also saw credentials for bank and financial accounts, health platforms, and government portals from numerous countries that could put exposed individuals at significant risk.
– The records exhibit multiple signs that the exposed data was harvested by some type of infostealer malware. Infostealer is a type of malicious software designed specifically to harvest sensitive information from an infected system. This malware usually targets credentials (like usernames and passwords) stored in web browsers, email clients, and messaging apps. Some variants of the malware can also steal autofill data, cookies, and crypto wallet information — some can even capture screenshots or log keystrokes. It is not known exactly how this specific data was collected, but cybercriminals use a range of methods to deploy infostealers.
– To confirm the authenticity of the data, I messaged multiple email addresses listed in the database and explained that I was investigating a data exposure that may have involved their information. I was able to validate several records as these individuals confirmed that the records contained their accurate and valid passwords.
– Many people unknowingly treat their email accounts like free cloud storage and keep years’ worth of sensitive documents, such as tax forms, medical records, contracts, and passwords without considering how sensitive they are. This could create serious security and privacy risks if criminals were to gain access to thousands or even millions of email accounts.
– From a cybersecurity perspective, I highly recommend knowing what sensitive information is stored in your email account and regularly deleting old, sensitive emails that contain financial documents or any other important files. If sensitive files must be shared, I recommend using an encrypted cloud storage solution instead of an email.
– {Note: These sorts of data breaches have become increasingly common in recent years. For example, Mashable previously reported on the RockYou2024 leak, which is regarded as the biggest password leak ever. In July of last year, a malicious user shared this compilation of nearly 10 billion credentials on hacker forums. These large data breaches provide bad actors with a dangerous tool to carry out automated brute force attacks. -Ed.}

RIP- Rick Derringer, Guitar Journeyman Behind ‘Rock And Roll, Hoochie Koo,’ Dead At 77:
– Rick Derringer, the guitarist and songwriter who scored hits with “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” and a cover of “Hang on Sloopy” while working with everyone from Steely Dan to “Weird Al” Yankovic, died on Monday. He was 77.
– Derringer’s death was confirmed by his friend, Tony Wilson, on Facebook. “Derringer’s legacy extends beyond his music, entertaining fans with his signature energy and talent,” Wilson wrote. “His passing leaves a void in the music world, and he will be deeply missed by fans, colleagues, and loved ones.”
– Born Aug. 5, 1947, Derringer grew up mostly in Ohio, before moving just across the state line to Union City, Indiana. There, he joined his first band, the McCoys, and while still a teenager, scored a Number One hit with the garage pop gem, “Hang on Sloopy.”
– Derringer was a true rock & roll journeyman, releasing a plethora of solo projects and collaborating with an array of artists over the course of his six-decade career. He worked extensively with Johnny and Edgar Winter, and racked up credits on albums by Barbra Streisand, Todd Rundgren, Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf, Kiss, Bonnie Tyler, and Cyndi Lauper. The Enigma of the Celtic Tomb: 51mins
2500 Years ago, a dynasty of Celtic Princes founded the first towns in Northern Europe. They constructed harbours along rivers and traded goods with people from all over Europe. This film presents new insights into Celtic history and culture thanks to exclusive access to the Celtic Tomb in Lavau (France) and the exceptionally rich and well-preserved collection of objects found on the gravesite.
