Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

News Note: Sanchez made a rare interview Monday covering a wide variety of important subjects, including some attacks against the judiciary. As it was in Spanish, I have provided 3 longer than usual full translated articles, with his quotes. These are free of any editoralizing on my part, just straight translations. If you are not following Spanish politics, just scroll down past the next 3 articles. -Ed.
SPAIN
Sánchez charges against the “minority” of judges that “make politics”, defends the “innocence and honesty” of his wife & brother, makes ton of other weak excuses across the board: {Translation}
– The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, declared on Monday that in Spain there exists “a minority” of judges who, far from limiting themselves to fulfilling their duties, devote themselves to “doing politics”, just as some political leaders attempt to dispense “justice”. Sánchez expressed this in an interview on TVE, where he also defended both the “honesty” and the “innocence” of his wife, Begoña Gómez, and his brother, David Sánchez, both under investigation in separate cases of alleged corruption.
– “I shall always stand with judges and prosecutors who fight against corruption and pursue criminals,” and “I believe that the vast majority of judges and prosecutors obey the law and perform their work,” affirmed Sánchez. Yet the truth, the President insisted, is that “there are judges who do not” confine themselves to discharging their functions with diligence, and there are “clear” examples of such alleged malpractice, such as those affecting his wife and brother, he denounced, asserting that both Begoña Gómez and David Sánchez are subject to judicial proceedings solely for being his “relatives”.
– “That there are judges engaging in politics and politicians attempting to act as judges… there are such cases, they are the minority, but they exist,” Sánchez declared during the interview. These instances, he maintained, “do immense harm to the judiciary”, and the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) ought, he said, to “reflect” upon “whether these investigations and judicial proceedings” concerning both Begoña Gómez and David Sánchez “possess the parameters of independence and respect for the presumption of innocence that all citizens deserve”.
– Likewise, the President asserted that he believes in the “innocence of the Attorney General”, Álvaro García Ortiz, on the verge of a public trial for an alleged crime of disclosure of secrets connected with the businessman Alberto González Amador, partner of the Madrid President Isabel Díaz Ayuso and himself under investigation for an alleged tax fraud. García Ortiz, Sánchez recalled, “may exercise his office whilst seated in the dock”, since his position “is compatible with maintaining that he is innocent”.
– Concerning the other principal corruption case linked to the PSOE, that investigating the alleged network of rigged public contracts led by Santos Cerdán, José Luis Ábalos and Koldo García, Sánchez declared that he had acted with “total firmness” as soon as he detected a “hint” of possible offences. The President admitted to having felt personally disappointed upon learning of the supposed conduct of his former collaborators and also to having considered resignation, but he stressed that both the Government and the PSOE are “cooperating with the judiciary and the State Security Forces, in a way not done in the past”, as well as having launched “proposals to improve oversight” so that such events are not repeated.
– The Head of Government, however, disconnected the alleged corrupt practices of Ábalos from his dismissal as minister in 2021, recalling that his departure was part of a broader reshuffle that also affected other heavyweights of the Council of Ministers, such as the then First Vice President Carmen Calvo. Sánchez also categorically denied that the network supposedly led by the last two Organisation Secretaries of the PSOE has provided financial gain to the party. “There is no irregular financing” nor, “of course”, any “structural corruption” within the organisation, he affirmed.
– The Government is still without a budget. Despite all these difficulties for the Government and its parliamentary weakness, Sánchez reiterated that his plan is to complete the legislature and promised to present a draft State Budget for 2026, something not done in the past two years, though the Executive is constitutionally obliged to attempt to bring forward accounts. “I shall present a Budget, but I also say this: the Budget is an instrument, not an end in itself; the end is growth, reducing inequality, and channelling European funds,” and that can be achieved with the current accounts, those approved for 2023, extended into 2024 and 2025, the President argued.
– “We shall fight to approve this State Budget, but if it is rejected we shall continue with the one we presently have”, which “permits advancing the social agenda and channelling all European funds up to 2026”, announced Sánchez, who admitted that Spain faces two great problems: access to housing — for which he requested “time” — and the limited growth of salaries. “I recognise those problems, but we are putting in place the framework to address them: we have allocated eight times more funds to housing policy”, established a “register of tourist flats”, created “a rent allowance” for young people, “increased pensions, raised the minimum wage” and “approved a labour reform that places the focus of collective bargaining upon workers’ conditions and wages”, he enumerated. Judges angered by Sánchez’s criticism of their work in TVE interview: “There is a strategy to delegitimize them”: {Translation}
– The President of the Government denounced on Monday the presence of “a minority” of judges devoted to doing “politics”, and, as expected, his statements have not been well received by the various judicial associations of Spain. Associations of a more conservative leaning, such as the Francisco de Vitoria Association (AJFV), have declared that Pedro Sánchez’s words contribute to generating “social mistrust” and “erode the foundations of our democracy”. Yet the discontent even extends to the progressive association Judges for Democracy (JJpD), where they admit that “perhaps it does not fall to the President of the Government to make such remarks”.
– Sánchez fired in several directions when uttering that phrase, but he was clearly alluding to Juan Carlos Peinado, the investigating magistrate handling the case against his wife for up to five alleged crimes, and probably to Judge Beatriz Biedma, in charge of the investigation concerning the brother of the head of the Executive. From the Professional Association of the Magistracy (APM), the largest in the profession, they affirm that Sánchez’s statements are possibly due to “his desperation because his closest circle is allegedly besieged by corruption”.
– “He struggles to understand that judges apply the law even when the alleged offender belongs to the family of the President of the Government,” declares the president of the APM, convinced that “Pedro Sánchez shows a lack of respect for the Judiciary and for the basic principles of a State governed by the rule of law”.
– “Those judges who, according to the President, engage in politics are precisely those who happen to be investigating the corruption cases that affect his circle,” concurs the president of the Independent Judicial Forum (FJI), Fernando Portillo. This association considers that the statements of the head of the Executive share the “populism” of certain declarations by Donald Trump. Portillo asserts that behind these words “there is a delegitimising strategy” against the Judiciary.
– The association Judges for Democracy, on the other hand, does believe that there is “no doubt about the instrumentalisation of certain judicial proceedings for partisan purposes”. Thus, while the association rejects the words of the President, it considers that the courts themselves must act “with the utmost rigour” to avoid “the judicialisation of politics”.
– The Francisco de Vitoria Judicial Association, for its part, highlights the seriousness of a President questioning “the integrity of an entire power of the State”. “If anyone considers that a particular judge has failed to uphold the law, there are legal channels and oversight mechanisms to hold him accountable,” concludes the association’s president, Sergio Oliva. Cristina Dexeus, president of the Association of Prosecutors, the largest in the profession, stresses that “no one can be above the law”. “One can only allow the courts to act without pressure, and certainly not by exploiting the office one holds,” she emphasises. Sanchez Needs the Blackmailing Junts to Get His Budget Passed- The government confirms that there will be a meeting “with absolute normality” between Sánchez and Junt’s leader-in-exile Puigdemont in Brussels but does not give dates: {Translation}
– The Government’s spokesperson, Pilar Alegría, has confirmed the willingness of the President of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez, to meet with the leader of Junts, Carles Puigdemont, but avoided giving any date, insisting that when the time comes it will be announced and the meeting will take place with “absolute normality”.
– “When that meeting is formalised and is about to take place, it will be announced in the most normal way,” Alegría stated, after being asked in the press conference following the Council of Ministers whether the meeting in Brussels between the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, and Puigdemont could be a prelude to one between Sánchez and the self-exiled separatist leader.
– “Today I have no appointment to convey to you,” the spokesperson declared, preferring not to “practise fortune-telling” regarding whether the fact that Illa’s meeting with the Junts leader is in Brussels paves the way for Sánchez’s meeting also to be held in the Belgian capital, bearing in mind that Puigdemont cannot, for the moment, return to Spain. “The President of the Government said that this meeting will take place with absolute normality and, when the time comes, all of you will know of it,” concluded the Minister-Spokesperson.
– For her part, the First Vice President and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, denied that this afternoon’s meeting is intended to address with the Junts leader his support for the State General Budgets (PGE), which the President had already stated the previous day the Government intends to present shortly. “Each negotiation has its own purpose,” Montero underlined, stressing that it will be the Ministry of Finance that discusses the budget with Junts. “Therefore, neither on today’s agenda nor in today’s spirit is there any discussion of budgets,” she emphasised.
– That said, the Second Vice President and Deputy Secretary of the PSOE framed the Brussels meeting “as part of the path of continuing to build mutual trust between the different political formations”. “I believe that is good for coexistence and it is good for dialogue,” she observed. Nevertheless, she added, the fact that the different political groups increase mutual trust “always has an impact on the general interest”. ANDALUCÍA
Trade unions and Marea Blanca issue a “cry for help” after delivering more than 50,000 signatures in defence of healthcare: {Translation, summary}
– Unions Satse, CSIF, CCOO and UGT joined the Andalusian Mareas Blancas movement in Seville, where over 5,000 people demonstrated outside the electoral census office to defend public healthcare. The protest coincided with the presentation of more than 50,000 signatures in support of a Bill to protect the Andalusian health system, an initiative endorsed by the unions.
– Organisers described the mobilisation as a desperate appeal against what they view as the regional government’s deliberate strategy to weaken the public service in order to justify privatisation. They warned that health policies prioritising private interests are endangering citizens’ wellbeing while overstretched professionals struggle to maintain a fragile system.
– The unions reaffirmed their commitment to continued mobilisation until agreements are honoured and urgent reforms adopted, such as stable staffing, shorter waiting lists, and protection against privatisation. Marea Blanca leaders called the action a Popular Legislative Initiative and urged professionals and citizens to resist. MALAGA PROVINCE
Mango farmers in Malaga criticize the fact that they are paid 80 cents per kilo while consumers pay between four and six euros: {Translation, summary}
– UPA Málaga has raised concerns over the significant disparity between what mango producers receive and the prices consumers pay. Farmers are only earning around 80 cents per kilo of mango, while the fruit sells for four to six euros in the market. The gap is attributed to ‘economic liberalism’, which benefits large producers while small farmers are left struggling.
– {Economic liberalism ideology supports the idea of free competition, private ownership, and minimal state involvement in business practices. For mango farmers, economic liberalism creates a system where they’re left vulnerable to price competition from South American mangos, low profit margins dictated by powerful international produce distributors, and external market forces. They end up struggling to stay afloat, while larger corporations and retailers often profit disproportionately. -Ed.}
– Francisco Pineda, a mango producer and UPA official, highlighted that mangoes weighing below 400 grams are sold as waste for mere cents, despite their excellent quality. The overall harvest this year is expected to reach 35,000 tonnes, but with prices significantly lower than last year’s 1.50 euros per kilo, farmers face heavy losses, amounting to over 12,600 euros per hectare.
– The union has called for better enforcement of the Food Chain Law to ensure fair pricing and attract younger generations to farming. They also noted that imports from South America are contributing to the problem. Can Your Company Build A Wooden Bridge? Bidding for the construction of the pedestrian bridge over the Torrox River begins: {Translation, summary}
– Torrox Town Council has completed the tender process for the construction of a pedestrian footbridge over the River Torrox, with a budget of €2.1 million. The infrastructure, which will extend the coastal path in the municipality, will connect the Ferrara promenade, at Punta del Faro, with El Peñoncillo beach via a wooden bridge.
– The project has the support of the Provincial Council of Malaga and aims to improve pedestrian connections along the coastline, ensuring universal accessibility, safety, and reduced environmental impact.
– Companies interested in carrying out the work can submit their bids until October 6 on the Public Sector Contracting Platform. The expected completion time is eight months.
The work has been divided into two lots: the first, worth €717,180.96, covers the foundations and refurbishment of the area; the second, worth €1,434,554.28, corresponds to the Scots pine wooden bridge. The footbridge will be 276.8 meters long and three meters wide, and will include wooden railings or masonry parapets in areas where there is a risk of falling. NERJA
They denounce illegal settlements in the Cala del Barranco de Maro: {Translation}
– This is the case of Barranco de Maro Cove, which can be accessed via a 400-metre-long footpath from the nearest point where vehicles can be parked, next to the Águila Aqueduct. This small enclave, barely 30 metres long and five metres wide, has become the improvised “home” of a group of people for several years now, during much of the summer season.
– This has been reported to SUR by several users and bathers of this small beach, who have warned that these people ‘camp in tents and sell cold drinks, tobacco and drugs to bathers’ in the area. In addition, according to testimonies gathered by this newspaper, which prefer to remain anonymous for fear of possible reprisals, these people ‘rent kayaks without any kind of permit or authorisation’ to bathers who come to the beach.
– “It’s a growing safety issue, they leave rubbish in the area, it’s totally illegal, and it gives a terrible image to this beautiful environment. We are afraid to take our young children to this cove, which is very important to us,” said one of the users.
– According to this complainant, they have reported this situation, which has been going on ‘for at least three years, and they do absolutely nothing,’ to the Town Council, the Local Police and the Civil Guard. ‘As it is a beach that is very difficult to access, only by foot or boat, it seems that no one cares about what is happening, but it is very serious,’ he said. This user warned that on some days, almost a hundred people gather at this small cove. ‘They park 20 or 30 cars at the top and walk down,’ he added.
– For their part, municipal sources have replied to SUR that, regarding the cleanliness of this area, complaints have been addressed and the waste has been removed, with ‘daily monitoring’ to prevent the situation from recurring. With regard to safety in the Barranco de Maro cove, the sources consulted have assured that, as on previous occasions in different parts of the natural area, ‘steps are being taken with the competent authorities’ to take action on these illegal settlements on the Nerja coast. Slovakia wants to normalise relations with Russia, ramping up gas imports, PM Fico says:
– Slovakia wants to normalise its relations with Moscow and is increasing imports of Russian gas through the TurkStream pipeline, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico told Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.
The comments clashed with the position of the European Union, which is seeking to wean itself off Russian energy imports to punish Moscow over its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, and come at a critical phase in efforts to end the conflict.
– Populist-led Slovakia and Hungary – both EU members – have sought to maintain political ties with Russia, which supplies the majority of their oil needs. “I want to say openly that we are extremely interested in standardisation of relations between the Slovak Republic and the Russian Federation,” Fico said during the meeting with Putin on the sidelines of China’s World War Two anniversary celebrations in Beijing.
– The EU has vowed to end its decades-old energy relations with former top gas supplier Moscow and is aiming to phase out all Russian energy imports by the end of 2027.
– Fico said Slovakia had restarted issuing visas to Russian citizens, a service that was suspended following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He said Slovakia was also interested in Russian companies potentially participating in a new nuclear power plant, a project the government aims to grant to U.S. firm Westinghouse. MIDDLE EAST
Israel starts calling 60,000 reservists in the middle of the plans to occupy the city of Gaza: {Translation, summary}
– The Israeli authorities began on Tuesday to call up 60,000 reservists amid the plans of the Government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to occupy the city of Gaza, regarded by Israel as a political and military stronghold of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).
– “We are going to intensify and deepen our operations. The war will not stop until the enemy is defeated,” declared the Chief of the Army, Eyal Zamir, speaking from the Nachshonim military base on the first day of mobilisation.
– Hundreds of reservists will have to train and prepare in the coming months to replace a large part of the regular forces stationed in northern Israel and in the West Bank, in preparation for the offensive against the city of Gaza, named ‘Chariots of Gideon 2’, in which they intend to deploy at least four divisions.
– A group of 300 reservists has protested against the military mobilisation during a press conference held in Tel Aviv, where they announced that they would not obey the order and criticised Netanyahu for conducting an “illegal” war, according to the newspaper The Times of Israel.
– Criticism within the military sector has grown in recent months as a result of the shortage of personnel for the Gaza Strip and the lack of rotations for the soldiers deployed in the enclave. The authorities reported on the previous day that a soldier had taken his own life at a base in the north of the country.
– The authorities of the Gaza Strip, controlled by Hamas, stated on Tuesday that more than 63,600 Palestinians have been killed as a result of the offensive launched by Israel against the enclave after the attacks of 7 October 2023, including more than 75 in the strikes carried out during the past 24 hours {pic}. The EU prohibits two usual components in semi -permanent nail polish (gel): {Translation}
– Semi-permanent manicures have grown in popularity in recent years. Unlike porcelain or gel nails, this technique takes little time and guarantees flawless nails for around three weeks. But now, a measure imposed by the EU is set to change this system, at least some of its components.
– As of 1 September, the European Commission has banned the use of two substances found in semi-permanent nail polish. These are trimethylbenzoyldiphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) and dimethyltolylamine (DMPT), which are essential in the process that causes the polish to dry under a UV lamp, harden and bond to the nail. Specifically, TPO accelerates the drying and hardening of the product when exposed to LED light, thus increasing its durability, while DMPT acts as a base to help the polish adhere better to the nail.
– The European Commission considers these two components to be toxic and classifies them as CMR 1B, a category that includes ‘potentially carcinogenic or mutagenic substances’ due to their ability to alter DNA sequences. Therefore, continued use may contribute to the development of certain types of cancer and may reduce fertility. In addition, TPO can cause skin and eye irritation.
– The authorities recommend that people who may have nail polish containing these components in their homes stop using it and, if they go to a beauty salon, ask to see the product’s INCI label to ensure that it does not contain these substances.
