Warning – Theft in Hospital

My wife is critically ill in Carlos Haya.

She left her only means of contact, her Smartphone, being charged by her bedside. About midnight an unseen thief entered her room, (with two ill patients) unplugged her mobile and stole it.

How anyone can steal from someone seriously ill is beyond me but slime comes in human form sometimes.

She is as much devastated by such callousness as her illness.

I wish to warn other seriously ill people of this possibility, in any hospital.

Please also pray for my beautiful, caring wife. Thank you. Tony Randall

Centipede Identified-

It´s a  Megarian Banded Centipede (Scolopendra cingulata – escolopendra), grows up to 15cm long and will give you a very nasty sting, so take care!

The creature shown is a Scolopendra.

They have a nasty very painful bite and it is advised to go to the medical centre to have an injection, if you are bitten.  Small animals and children are particularly vulnerable.

Scolpendras are difficult to kill so make sure that you dispose of them ruthlessly.

They also seem to be able to survive for some time in pools, so do not be fooled into thinking they are dead, unless you are sure.

The large Centipede referred to is commonly known as a Tiger Centipede and is found in North Africa and Southern Spain, is poisonous but not deadly.

Mealy Bugs & Prickly Pears

We had  a number of infested prickly pears in our garden and found an extremely effective way of eradicating the pests-we dug up the plants and burnt them,(before the hot weather set in). Problem solved and we haven’t regretted the action-we can see prickly pears (covered in mealy bugs), along any public road or track we travel.

1. KODI Problems? Many users are having problems with the new upgraded series 17 version of Kodi crashing. The designers, rather than fix it, are going to release a new version. Kodi 18 has already entered the public testing phase. If you have not upgraded from version 16, keep using it until it is announced that version 18 is stable at this Kodi info site https://kodi.tv/blog. But there are other Kodi problems to deal with. Due to a crackdown on video piracy many of the free Kodi IPTV plug-ins are no longer working and have shut down their websites; the remainder have become unreliable and may soon fold. The future of IPTV is either paid subscription services or using free .m3u files that must be updated every few days. The .m3u files provide a list of channels/networks from which to choose. Since it is easier to use .m3u files with VLC Player than with Kodi, and as many subscription services require their own software (Mobdro for example), the future of Kodi as a format for viewing free IPTV is in doubt. I suggest you either get a paid subscription to FilmOn, Mobdro (Android only), etc., or study up on using .m3u files. I can teach you to use .m3u files, and provide you the required tools, in a single €25 class.

2. Beware Windows 10-S, a new version of Windows 10. It will soon be offered in budget priced computer models. This is Microsoft’s answer to the Google Chromebook. It has severe limitations. Currently that means no Chrome, no Firefox, no iTunes, numerous games, etc. All software must be downloaded from a very limited selection at the Windows Store. 3. The heat has returned and with it laptops will be running hot. In addition, many people now have duo-core and quad-core laptops; more processors means more heat generated. When temps rise above 28C it is advisable to take precautions. Place spacers beneath the laptop to allow air circulation, point a desk fan at your laptop, or use a “cooling tray”. Keep the air vents clean, an old toothbrush can be used for this. If your laptop shuts itself down from overheating, wait a half hour before restarting it to avoid damage. If a laptop is driven to shut itself down repeatedly from overheating the thermal paste on the processor may fail, the RAM can burn out or your hard disk can die. All are expensive repairs best avoided. A full fan and cooling system cleaning is part of my computer clean&tuneup maintenance service, something all laptops need at least annually.

Many people all over the world are using Skype phones from different manufacturers.

Until recently problems have arisen with them, this is due

to Microsoft making them EOL [end of line] meaning

there is no support or firmware update for the phone.

The phones can make outgoing calls on a Skype In number but

anyone receiving a call will not hear the phone ring thus making a phone virtually useless.

It means either leaving a desktop computer or laptop on permanently so when someone calls it will ring on the computer but you can still pick up the phone to talk.

Microsoft want you to buy their products seeing as they own Skype.

The choice is yours on what to do.

Recommendation– Cactus and Cochineal

I see that we are into the Cactus and Cochineal season again – those tiny white flies that breed on the cactus (chumbas) and then fly through normal mosquito nets.  (Mealy bugs don’t fly)  You may remember my little film from two years ago.

Apart from cutting down these annoying cactus try my old favourite, a hand garden pressure sprayer loaded with a mix of Domestos bleach available from Torrox and Nerja Supersols.  I have no idea if is any good for the cactus but I don’t care since they too are rated a nuisance.  Chris B

We heard that there was a small notice in the ambulatoria warning people that the sea was not fit to swim in and you could be infected by ‘toxins’

With reference to Patricia’s letter. I would like to add we have been coming to Torrox for about 10 years – using Penoncillo beach and each summer the sewage has drifted along. Mostly in the afternoons. Each year we are told that Nerja’s new sewage disposal plant will be finished but it never is.

It’s quite disgusting and puts visitors off going to the beach.

Something has to be done to alleviate this health hazard.

Cochineal flies/beetles ‘mealy bug’ infestation

(Response to previous item requesting  info)

Some information that some of you may find helpful.

We have just recently moved to Torrox Campo.  Within days of arriving for our first summer the house was filled, at night-time, with white ‘mealy bugs’ – with windows closed and screens in place. We checked the internet for information and there was a good deal to be found, especially previous posts here, at Digame.

We have a lot of prickly pears surrounding the house so we, with information to hand, began to power spray the plants with water, scrub them and we also sprayed soapy liquids – all to little effect.

We did however find a solution that some of you may be aware of. My partner used a butane, hand-held blow-torch just far enough away from the prickly pear to burn off the ‘mealy bugs’ without damaging the prickly pear too much.  We then went around all of the prickly pears and treated them in this way and the reduction in infestation was remarkable.  While this method has been incredibly successful for us we would advise caution.  The blow-torch should only be used where the area surrounding the prickly pear has been cleared of all dried garden matter – grasses, dead leaves etc.  A garden hose should also be kept handy should anything catch fire. It might even be an idea to hose down the surrounding area before using the blow-torch

Can anyone enlighten me as to the opening hours of Competa police station please?

On 4 separate occasions,in normal hours, i have travelled from the campo to the station to take in important papers and collect information from the desk and each time they have been closed. I find this dismaying for residents to say the least and particularly at this time of year,when there is also a general influx of tourists to the village and surroundings.

Nerja Beaches

The problem is not with holes in the pipe-line. It is simply the fact that raw sewage is pumped out to sea and this is then washed backed to the shore by the tides. The authorities say that the force of the waves etc should break up the sewage but that doesn´t stop us frequently having filthy water. It is also affecting other beaches along the coast.

I am a beach person and I do check before I go in the water BUT I do not go in above my neck. Also I only use a beach that has showers so I can rinse off straight away and then have a good shower when I get home.

This has been a problem for many, many years and is already well known by Nerja’s visitors. Google ‘Nerja sea pollution’ and there are articles going back years from sites like Trip advisor, (the US and New Zealand versions as well) that talk about the state of the sea. The authorities are well aware of it and the possible damage to the tourist industry, but have not exactly rushed to build a water treatment works.

We have Krups Nespresso coffee maker, which takes the capsules.  It is
suddenly dead!
Does not respond to plugging in to the mains, the operating buttons on
top do not light up.  There does not appear to be any way in which one
can open it up to see what might be wrong.  The machine is about 5

Recommendation- for Band Hire

Sol Souvenir is an acoustic duo, both play guitar and sing. I first saw them last year, at Cochran’s Irish Bar, playing to a packed house. One of the best gigs I attended in 2016. Now they are back in the area after a Winter away. I saw them recently at Busker’s Bar, Nerja. Another excellent gig.

I would highly recommend them if you are seeking some live entertainment for almost any type of event. Very reasonable rates. Perfect for weddings, reunions, parties, bar gigs, etc. Still young enough to exude boundless musical excitement, they are none-the-less both polished musicians and vocalists. They bring a small but strong, high quality PA system. They don’t require much space to set-up.

They have a long playlist covering Rock, Folk, Blues, Pop Classics. They are native Spanish speaking, but speak and sing in English. They do not use backing tracks. They do not use pitch correction. They do sing from the heart, and each show is unique, tailored to the situation.

Stolen Plants in Torrox

Has anyone seen the pink diplademia  in this photo appear overnight in a neighbour’s garden? It disappeared on Sunday night. Over the 9 years I have been here numerous plants and ceramic pots have been stolen from the front of my house. I now only put plastic pots out but that didn’t save this plant which was just establishing itself nicely. We try to make this village attractive but it’s disheartening to lose plants and some are not cheap. Be warned. I don’t imagine the local police will bother investigating but I will report it this time. Should you spot it please ring 675365147.

I am seriously considering taking a Spanish driving test and wonder if any Digamites could offer some advice.
A. Do I need to know how to use the indicators ?
B. Do I need to be able to park between two white lines ?
C. Do I have to be able to negotiate a roundabout ?

A point to note about ‘Blue Flag’ beaches.

The award is made for the condition of the beach only and I have to say that they make a good effort here.  However, this award does not dip a toe in the actual sea alongside the beach so is a bit of a cop out for the overall impression of a sea resort.   Don’t go in the water until you have tried it !  Chris Barrett

 

Polluted Sea – a Suggestion …..

Dear Jane, I read this message and saw the video, Afterwards I was shocked

I thought it may help to try and make a change thru more awareness.

Normally you only post info on a two week bases BUT in this case maybe we could start a signature list with all Nationalities that live here and create more awareness of the problem.

It would be such a small thing to have divers check the pipelines and video the holes and have the town halls get them repaired. I’m confident that NO mayor of a beach town wants to lose one of there main tourist attraction ” BEACH ” with dirty and disgusting water. I will gladly help and go to the officials and try to convince them to pay the divers and repair the holes to make our beaches clean/er etc..

Hopefully, if we show them in what state the water is in and how easily it can be improved, they will organize repair.

Then it should be checked on a yearly basis to insure that the pipelines are in tact.  I”m quite confident that they don’t want negative publicity and  that this should be a big issue and become public knowledge. It’s not ” only” about our kids/grand kids but also about the Ecosystem.

My son got a terrible eye infection from swimming on Burriana beach, Nerja, years ago. The UK doctor immediately said, “have you been on holiday in Spain ?”

It seems nothing has changed – so what does a Blue flag Beach mean ?
Every afternoon the sea at Torre, Almayate, Benajarafe etc are full of brown scum, plastic waste and chicken feathers.

The mornings seem cleaner.
This is the Mediterranean it’s an enclosed sea therefore any waste disposal is just accumulation literally a dustbin
Spain depends on tourism -how come Malta for example is much cleaner ?

Recommendation for Steven Rowle Animal Healing.

To all Digamites who have dogs or other animals, I would highly recommend Steven Rowle.

I have four dogs of mixed breeds that I was having difficulty with, in regards to their behaviour, despite spending fortunes on dog classes in the past and doing all the recommended things by so called experts.

I was very sceptical of Mr Rowle to start with and I could even have been a bit rude with my manner, but my darling wife insisted and he is recommended by Veterinary practices in the region.

This is without doubt a very talented man, he brought peace to me, my dogs and my wife, I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Since saying you would only post items for sale with a value over 10€, people still seem to try and sell any old junk but with the 10€ price tag. Whilst I still enjoy reading the useful information and useful items for sale, I despair at items such as the ancient Video camera for sale “not sure if it’s working” hence the price of 20€. Surely they are joking. I just feel it lowers the tone of all your efforts. Such items are far better being given to a charity shop or just chucked out. I really wouldn’t have the cheek to sell broken furniture, TV’s that don’t quite work. Etc etc.
Not sure what the answer is, but maybe insist  that items for sale should at least be in good working order. I think it would be a shame if dígame was reduced to the standards of a poor boot sale.
Anyway well done and I will still look forward to tomorrow’s issue.

Nerja Sea – Pollution ? Responses

I see in Saturday’s Digamextra,  that the Nerja sewage is still around – that is what happens when you s*** in the sea, despite all the plans for treatment and ‘Blue Flag’ beaches.  Let’s be realistic.  It is never safe to discharge raw sewage into the sea and lame excuses like ‘broken pipes’ won’t protect you.   You may be interested to see my casual little film from 2011 – nothing has changed and if you must venture in keep your mouth closed !

APA Nerja are desperately seeking foster carers and walkers for our shelter dogs
At present we have over 50 dogs in the shelter… 10 of them are small puppies and really should be in foster care.. however we do what we can for them
Mostly we need people who are willing  to walk a dog
Holiday makers or residents it doesn’t matter
Our group walks are starting at 8.30 due to the heat but you would just need to come with us once or twice and then can walk whatever time you like between 8.30 and 1…
We walk down to Playazo and back to shelter… takes about an hour..
Because of the lack of walkers we have been going back with one lot and taking another to give them all at least one walk a week … but it’s getting too hot now after about 10.30

I had two new ones installed in kitchen and bathroom when I moved into this property in March!

Action for Animals End the Season with a Success

Many thanks to the lovely folk who attended Wednesday’s quiz at Bar Cerezo in Canillas de Albaida.

160€ was raised for the charity, and it was doubled by a very generous donation from Fran Bennett.

Our “Bonnie” has disappeared from our balcony this morning .

She never goes out only on our roof terrace or on our balcony .

She got onto the fence and we’ve not seen her since

She’s very timid and will be terrified !

Once before this happened a long time ago and was found in a neighbour’s house but we’ve searched them !

Is it a health hazard to swim in the sea around Nerja?

Can anyone help with a serious concern of mine?
There have been a lot of reports recently about the sewage floating in the sea in the area of the Torrecilla and Playazo beaches and there has, apparently, been work going on to repair a damaged pipe that takes raw sewage out to sea. I recently enquired at the Tourist Information Office and was told, with a shrug of the shoulders, that it was safe before the work started and that it is safe now.
This is not really good enough and I have heard people who are on holiday here for the first time saying that, while they love Nerja, they will not be returning because of the condoms, sewage and other items floating in the water.
Presumably the sea water is tested regularly so can anyone actually confirm that it is safe to swim in the sea?  There may have been a broken pipe and there may be reasons why a new sewage plant is still not in operation but is there anyone who can say whether or not it is safe to swim in the Nerja area?
My photograph shows one of the areas of pollution floating in the sea off the Playazo beach near to the Marinas de Nerja on Thursday afternoon and I can only say that it looks distinctly like sewage and put me off swimming there.

My Google Chrome has stopped working – the icons are there, but when I
click on them nothing happens.

Everything else seems to be OK, but when I fire up the laptop, I see for a few seconds a small box to the rh lower screen, which is headed
“Failed to connect to a Windows Service” and underneath something to
the effect of
“Couldn’t connect to a Group Policy Client etc”.

It fades out too quickly to get any more.
I tried re loading Chrome, which seemed to be OK, but there is no sign
of it on my screen.
Can anyone please help me find the problem??
It’s rather annoying as all the things I normally use are on my Google
Chrome, and can be accessed by one click.  I can get there by Internet
Explorer, but it is a much longer way round!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

The Phoenix Club are off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 7^th July.

We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

We would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.

The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!
