Editor’s Note: Although not nearly 100% yet, I am feeling somewhat better, and most of the facial swelling has gone down. I have spent 2 weeks trying to figure out what caused the illness. After much consideration, I now believe it may have been an allergic reaction to a middle-eastern sweet I bought in a small grocery on impulse from a counter-top display tray, a kind of pistachio paste stuffed gooey baklava thing with an almond on top. It was the only unusual food I ate before I became ill, that I had forgotten about till this past weekend. Thanks to all those that sent “get well soon” messages.

SPAIN
The asphyxiating tax burden- it has risen 21% since Sánchez’s arrival and the new far-left coalition SUMAR pushes for far more, except maybe less for women (yes, they really suggested tax discounts for women): {Translation, summary}
– Spain has been living in a permanent state of electoral campaigning for some years now, not only because of the number of elections held, but also because of the enormous polarisation of the political forces in the different administrations, which feeds the perpetual verbal confrontation.
– The first major proposal has not taken long to come to the fore since Pedro Sánchez dissolved Las Cortes on 29 May. Yolanda Díaz, is the acting Minister of Labour and Social Economy, and leader of SUMAR. SUMAR is a new coalition comprised of smaller far-left groups, for whom Sanchez is not far-left enough. Díaz announced a few days ago her party’s intention to raise all taxes (personal income tax, corporation tax, taxes on large fortunes, environmental taxes, digital taxes…) with the exception of VAT. She even raised the possibility of differentiated taxation for women. And this is still a month and a half before the elections.
– According to the IEE report, “during 2022, we have witnessed in Spain a tax collection that exceeds all historical records”. The IEE warns that in the current financial year, budgeted tax revenues will exceed pre-pandemic figures, those of 2019, by almost 50,000 million euros. In its opinion, tax revenues will have increased by 23.4%, while GDP will grow by 11.5%, less than half. Source, Spanish: https://www.vozpopuli.com/economia_y_finanzas/presion-fiscal-espana.html

President Sanchez Makes Insane Claim Spanish Media Is Dominated By Conservatives: {Translation, summary}
– {Is Sanchez so far out of touch with reality he actually believes this foolishness? Spanish media has long been dominated by progressive forces who push any new radical, progressive plans Sanchez comes up with. Articles critical of the Left’s agenda are very few, and usually only found in small, local newspapers. The reason the news has been dominated by articles about the conservatives recently is because they just won elections in a landslide. What is the news to do, cover the losers? -Ed.}
– The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has falsely pointed out that there are fewer progressive voices on talk shows or in the media with respect to the sociological reality of the country, which he has placed at 50% conservatives and 50% progressives.
– Although he avoided making specific mentions, he pointed out that any observer or analyst can see that this disproportion exists, in an interview on Onda Cero, reported by Europa Press.
– Sánchez has conveniently not indicated which media are, in his opinion, carrying out campaigns of disqualifications and insults against him and his government. Although he preferred not to cite specific names in public on the grounds that he is the president, he has offered to pass them on off-microphone. “If wanted, I can say later in private,” he said.
– At the time, Sánchez claimed that “the right wing” has a dominant position in the mainstream media and has unleashed a ferocious campaign of “insults and disqualifications”. In this sense, he added that you can see on prime-time programmes how they “invent outrageous things” because what in his opinion the right wing is “copying the methods of their American masters”.
– He also stated that he believes that some will talk of “pucherazo” (election rigging), and others will want to arrest him as responsible for this “pucherazo”. It’s not new, his American masters launched a crazed mob to storm the Capitol to denounce a false “pucherazo”,” he recalled, comparing PP and Vox to Trumpism.
– On Monday, when questioned about which media outlets are those in which the right has a position of dominance and runs disinfo campaigns, Sánchez pointed out that there is a “disproportion” in the representation of progressive voices, although he did not name names.
– In the same vein, he reiterated that “it is a reality” that there is a lack of proportionality. “Any objective analyst of the media reality in our country can confirm an indisputable fact, and that is that there is an absolute disproportion” and an “imbalance” in favour of conservative options, he said.

MALAGA PROVINCE
Housing sales stagnate- almost 20% less in April: {Translation, summary}
– Property sales and purchases are stagnating in Malaga and going backwards. This is what can be deduced from the latest report published by Prisma Global, which shows a year-on-year fall in real estate transactions of almost 20 per cent in April. With an added indicator, because if it is generally the sale of used housing that stimulates the real estate market, in the fourth month of the year, and in the year-on-year comparison with April 2023 it is observed that the decline is 16 percent.
– Prisma warns that “the indicators of the real estate market in the province of Malaga seem to point to a cooling with respect to the strong growth of 2022, all in the midst of strong macroeconomic uncertainties and rising interest rates”.
– The latest published data from the housing sales indicator (INE) for April 2023, which left a figure of 2,439 sales in the province of Malaga, which, in relative terms, translates into a decrease of -19.6 percent compared to the same month in 2022. FINANCIAL
World leaders headed to the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact in Paris push for global debt and climate reform in a “new consensus”:
– French President Emmanuel Macron has said the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact is aimed at building a “new consensus” to meet the interlinked global targets of tackling poverty, curbing planet-heating emissions and protecting nature. Ideas on the table range from taxation on shipping, fossil fuels or financial transactions, to innovations in lending and a structural rethink of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.
– France says the two-day summit, which begins on Thursday and will bring together some 50 heads of state and government, was more of a platform for ideas sharing ahead of a cluster of major economic and climate meetings in the coming months. In particular, the French Presidency said on Friday it wanted to give “political impetus” to the idea of an international tax on carbon emissions from shipping, with hopes of a breakthrough at a meeting of the International Maritime Organization later in June.
– With trust in short supply over broken climate financing promises from richer countries, developing nations are looking for tangible progress.
– The V20 group of countries on the climate frontlines, which now includes 58 member nations, has said restructuring the global financial system to align with climate targets must be completed by 2030.
– Economies have been battered by successive shocks in recent years, including Covid-19, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, spiking inflation and the increasingly expensive impacts of weather disasters intensified by global warming. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has said the pandemic and its aftermath amounted to a “stress test” for a financial system that was set up nearly eight decades ago.
– “It largely failed,” he said earlier this month, adding that 52 developing countries are in, or near, debt distress.
– Last week the World Bank also called for drastic reform to re-channel trillions of dollars in harmful and unnecessary subsidies for fossil fuels, agriculture and fishing into action on climate and nature.
