SPAIN

Electricity soars 142% on Monday to its highest level in 10 days: {Translation}
– The price of electricity will soar this Monday by 142.4%, to 117.02 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), after setting its lowest price since 21 May, at 48.3 euros, according to the results of the auction held on Sunday in the wholesale market.
– The cap on gas will continue not to be applied, as its price on the Iberian Gas Market (Mibgas) remains below the limit of 59.4 euros/MWh established by the government for July.
– By time slot, electricity will reach its highest price between 22:00 and 23:00, with 139.49 euros/MWh, and the lowest between 16:00 and 17:00, with 88.08 euros/MWh.
– Nevertheless, electricity in Spain will be 47.7% cheaper this Monday than a year ago, when it reached 223.69 euros/MWh, although it reaches its highest level in ten days and becomes more expensive than in neighbouring countries.
– In Germany, its price will be 53.22 euros/MWh; in France, 67.49 euros/MWh; in the United Kingdom, 63 pounds/MWh (around 73.33 euros at the current exchange rate), and in Italy, 115.75 euros/MWh. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5143496/0/luz-dispara-lunes-nivel-mas-alto/

Spain to lead the EU — but who is to lead Spain?:
– Spain is set to hold early elections, just three weeks after it takes over the EU Council presidency on July 1 – and it’s by no means clear that the Socialist prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, will win and stay on as head of government.
– Sanchez has been downplaying the impact the elections might have on Spain’s leadership of the EU. “Democracy is never a problem,” he said in Madrid at the beginning of June. “It’s not the first time in Europe that elections have taken place during a presidency. There have been changes of government, too.”
– However, an election and a possible change of government right at the start of a six-month Council presidency are a total exception. Pedro Sanchez has even postponed his appearance in the European Parliament while he campaigns for re-election. He was supposed to present and discuss his program for the Council presidency in Strasbourg before the election took place. The presentation will not now be made until September, after the summer break – by whoever is then the Spanish head of government.
– Spanish EU diplomats in Brussels insist that the work of the presidency will continue smoothly as planned, elections or no. They emphasize that the topics for this presidency have been prepared for months, if not years, in advance, and were closely coordinated with partner countries Belgium and Hungary, which will take turns to preside next year. Employment Numbers Gains Are Statistical Trickery- one in four contracts lasts less than a week: {Translation, summary}
– In the first five months of the year, 6.17 million contracts have been signed in Spain, according to the latest data published by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy. This is 1.63 million fewer than in the same period last year, a decrease of 20.93%.
– The Government boasts about the unemployment, hiring, employment and Social Security enrolment figures, but there are some details that cast a shadow over the performance of our labour market.
– The accumulated data for the first five months of the year make it abundantly clear that hiring is highly polarised: either a worker is hired on an indefinite basis or is offered a contract that does not last more than a week. The figures show that 45.26% of the contracts signed between January and May are permanent, but around 24%, the second highest percentage, do not last more than seven days.
– The new “star” contract of the Spanish labour market has a maximum duration of seven days. Between January and May, more one-week contracts were signed than permanent contracts. According to data collected by the Ministry of Labour, 1.25 million contracts signed in the period January-May this year had a maximum duration of seven days.
– Including one week contract jobs as “newly created jobs” in labour statistics measuring unemployment rates over longer periods, without removing them at their termination, is a result of recent labour reforms by the Socialist government. This now manipulates the data regarding new jobs created, and the total number of employed, in a very deceptive fashion, presenting a declining situation as an improvement. Now, one single job contract, that is filled on a weekly basis, can count as many new jobs, if different persons are hired throughout the year to do it, even as the previous holders of the job have returned to the unemployment line. AXARQUIA

Axarquía bandit museum to hold wine-tasting and flamenco evening:
– The new Galería del Bandolero museum in the Axarquía village of El Borge, which opened last February with the largest collection of its kind in the world, will hold its first ‘Tragabuches’ evening, combining local history with flamenco and cheese and wine tasting on 15 July. The event is named after one of Spain’s most notorious nineteenth century bandits.
– The show, which is part of the national Magical Nights programme, will be held on the museum’s outdoor patio at 9.30p.m. and will cost 40 euros per person. Five wines from different parts of Malaga province (red, white and sweet) will be on offer and they will be accompanied by five flamenco palos (styles) performed by Fabiola Santiago – on vocals – and Rubén Portillo – on guitar – all linked to the world of Andalusian banditry.
– The wine tasting, in Spanish and English, will be led by the wine tourism guide Marina Ruiz, from Enoexperience, and will be accompanied by ham and Iberian cured meats, local olive oil, olives and almonds, as well as grapes and cheese. Participants will have the opportunity to taste the first muscatel grapes of the season, thanks to the collaboration of the Ucopaxa cooperative and its growers. MALAGA PROVINCE

Most of the health centers in the province of Malaga will close in the afternoon from Monday, limited evening hours only available at selected centers: {Translation, summary}
– From Monday 3 July, most health centres will be closed in the afternoon. Some will not re-open in the evening until 15 September.
– In Malaga city, of the 26 health centres, only six will open in the afternoon: Cruz de Humilladero, El Palo, Churriana, El Cónsul, La Roca and Puerta Blanca. In the mornings and evenings, everything remains the same as the rest of the year. From 8:00 to 15:00 all health centres are open, and from 20:00 to 8:00, open are only those with emergency points, which in Malaga city are Puerta Blanca, Cruz de Humilladero, El Palo and Churriana.
– Malaga province. Málaga Hoy asked how many were closed in the afternoon throughout the province, but the health administration did not provide the data. The Regional Ministry of Health did issue a note in an attempt to make the evening closures go unnoticed by stating that “all health centres in the province will remain open during the summer season”. This is true, but ONLY in the morning hours. According to Health, “in the summer months, the attention of non-delayable consultations is redistributed in health centres and clinics throughout the province”. In other words, most of the primary care network is closed in the afternoons. No information on evening hours in Malaga province health centers was provided by the Ministry. MALAGA CITY

La Pérgola del Mediterráneo, Antonio Banderas’ new restaurant opens: {Translation}
– The future golden mile of gastronomy in Malaga is beginning to take shape. La Pérgola del Mediterráneo, the new restaurant of actor and director Antonio Banderas, opened its doors this weekend. A renovated classic on the emblematic terrace of the Club Mediterráneo that is slowly starting to roll, with a limited capacity for these first few days: a maximum of 60 diners out of a possible 300 in the two areas of the establishment (outside and lounge).
– “There was so much expectation that we preferred to do it this way. We couldn’t afford to start with a grand opening and make mistakes”, explains Pablo Gonzalo Portillo, Antonio Banderas’ partner in the Tercer Acto hotel group. In fact, there has been no official announcement or any communication on their social networks. The first customers have been people linked to the club. At the end of this week (it will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday for operational reasons), the service will be gradually increased. Reservations can already be made by calling 617 82 12 12 92. NERJA

Man who allegedly barricaded himself in a Burriana home takes his own life: {Translation, summary}
– Friday afternoon was a nervous and worrying one in Islas Baleares street in Burriana. At midday a call came in to the 112 telephone number alerting that shouts of a fight had been heard, as well as gunshots in a flat in this street. It was also reported that the man’s children and wife, along with their pets, had left the house in question.
– The Guardia Civil carried out a large deployment in the area, as everything suggested that the individual had barricaded himself in the house with a shotgun. There were tense moments throughout the afternoon and finally the agents of the Reserve and Security Group (GRS) appeared, who on entering the house found the body of the man, who had taken his own life.
– The Guardia Civil cordoned off the area to prevent damage to the neighbours of the house and residents of the neighbourhood, and the tension became apparent when, as the GRS entered, they heard knocks that many of the witnesses mistook for gunshots. On entering the house, the officers found that the individual was alone in the house, so there were no injuries other than those of the dead victim.

EUROPE

France has a 5th night of rioting over teen’s killing by police amid signs of subsiding violence: Hundreds of police and firefighters have been injured in the violence, although authorities haven’t said how many protesters have been hurt. Young rioters clashed with police into early Sunday and targeted a mayor’s home with a burning car, injuring members of his family, as France saw a fifth night of unrest after the police killing of a teenager. Overall violence, however, appeared to lessen from previous nights. Police made 719 arrests nationwide by early Sunday following a mass security deployment aimed at quelling France’s worst social upheaval in years. More than 3,000 people have been detained overall since the death. The mass police deployment has been welcomed by some frightened residents of targeted neighbourhoods and shop owners whose stores have been ransacked, but further frustrated those who see police behaviour as the core of the crisis. The family of the victim has called for calm. Photo: Gonzalo Fuentes. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/france-riots-police-shooting-6572afbd85e56f63c476228016b365f5
