Sabadell cash point: I did receive a notification from Sabadell that the Torrox Costa ATM was shutting, but unfortunately cannot find it now. It said that a new ATM will be installed in El Morche (so perhaps closer to Carol who wrote about this yesterday). From memory it was somewhere near the Hotel Costamar, although in the meantime until the new one is up and running our nearest one is in Nerja, so very inconvenient for those of us in Torrox. Closing the branch has been a pain when having to trek into Nerja town centre to collect new cards as it’s not somewhere we usually go. Why they have two branches in Nerja but closed the busy one in Torrox Costa I’m not sure (probably cost cutting). I think you can withdraw cash from other banks but there will be a charge. I go to places where they don’t accept cards, so always have to have some cash.

An economics professor from Seville dismantles President Sánchez in a video with a group of fellow economists- “It is false that employment is doing well in Spain”: {Translation} 07/15/2023
– {I’ve covered this topic, of Sanchez twisting statistics and distorting projections, in my editorial comments in previous articles. Guess I was ahead of the media-curve on this one. [Editor takes a bow] -Ed.}
– A group of economists have disseminated a video on social networks dedicated to dismantling what they consider to be “falsehoods” in the economic discourse of the President of the Government and PSOE candidate for re-election during the 23J general election campaign. Issues such as GDP, public debt, the minimum wage, pensions and fixed-term contracts came to light during the face-to-face televised debate with the candidate and president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo. Sánchez defended that Spain “is going like a motorbike” while his opponent said the opposite: “We are worse off than four years ago”.
– Manuel Parejo Guzmán, who has been a professor of Financial Economics and Accounting at the Pablo de Olavide University in Seville for almost 21 years, is one of the experts who refuted the president of the Executive. His conclusion is that “Mr Sánchez is lying when he assures us that employment in Spain is going well”. “He talks about two million new people employed since he has been president, but he does not count the fact that in Spain we have fewer hours worked. Therefore, we are talking about more precarious employment. We cannot talk about quality employment because we are talking about fewer working hours for more people,” argues the director general of the Andalusian Cement and Environment Labour Foundation (Flacema).
– Parejo, who is a member of the Social Council of the University of Seville on behalf of the Governing Council of the Andalusian Regional Government, also questions the 14% drop in temporary contracts put forward by the Socialist candidate. “It is nothing more than the statistical effect of the labour reform”, he points out, since the unemployed and people with temporary jobs have become permanent, discontinuous workers, which is, he says, “a tool” to “distort the data”.
– Finally, the UPO professor is surprised that Sánchez places the threshold of full employment at 8% unemployment, when the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) itself sets this indicator at 4%. Furthermore, he recalls that Spain doubles unemployment in the Eurozone, has three times the youth unemployment rate and occupies the “worst position in female employment”. 55% of the employment created during the five years of Sánchez’s government has been public, he points out. “Therefore, it is false that employment is going well,” Parejo concludes.
– The video also features the economist and president of Freemarket, Lorenzo Bernaldo de Quirós, who states that “average growth during the legislature has been 0.4%, the lowest in the whole of the European Union and the Eurozone”. Doctor of Economics José María Rotellar questions the inflation figure provided by the president: “Since Sánchez has been in office, inflation has risen by 15.7%”, which in the case of food has meant a rise of 10.3% year-on-year.
– Economist Daniel Lacalle denies that “Spain is the fastest growing country in the EU”. “According to Eurostat data, there are nine countries that are growing not more, but much more than Spain”. In addition, he points out that Spain has not recovered the GDP of 2019, which is among the lowest of the surrounding countries. The Treasury raises the compensation of mileage expenses by 37%, six days before the elections (after 18 years without updating it): {Translation, summary}

As of this Monday, employees who use their personal car, van or motorcycle to work will be entitled to compensation of 26 cents per kilometer traveled (10.6 in the case of motorcycles), 37% more than they could perceive until now.
– Potential beneficiaries are all workers who use their personal vehicle for work. It is important to point out that trips from the place of residence to the workplace are excluded. AXARQUIA
Record low for La Viñuela Reservoir as reserves fall to 8.9%: {Translation} 17July23, 13:18h
– The reserves of La Viñuela continue to fall, marking a new historic low. Until now the reservoir had not fallen below 9% and it has now passed it. Today, it is at 8.94% of its total capacity and holds only 14.7 cubic hectometres, when it is the largest reservoir in the province, as it can hold up to 164 hectometres. In order to save water, the municipalities of the Axarquia region have approved a series of measures to consume as little as possible and to ensure that there are reserves for the autumn. In total, the seven reservoirs in Malaga are at 28%.
– The Junta de Andalucía approved in the last drought committee that the supply in the region should reduce its consumption by 20%. As a result, the local councils took the decision to prohibit street washing, car washing, watering gardens, refilling swimming pools and closing beach showers. It is true that the restrictions are different in each municipality, as it depends on the resources available to them.
– In the case of Vélez-Málaga, Benamargosa, Moclinejo, Iznate, Almáchar and El Borge are cutting the water supply at night.
– In Torrox, Nerja, Vélez-Málaga, Rincón de la Victoria and Algarrobo the water in their showers has been cut off. In addition, street washing, refilling swimming pools and watering gardens have also been banned, among other measures.
– The seven reservoirs in Malaga total 174 hectometres
The reserves of the seven reservoirs in the province total 174.88 hectometres. This means that in Malaga there is only 28% of the water that all the reservoirs can hold. The situation of La Viñuela {pic} is the most serious, but the rest of the reservoirs are in a very similar situation. In the Guadalhorce Valley region, the three reservoirs – Conde del Guadalhorce, Guadalhorce and Guadalteba – have 111.84 hectometres of water. The first of these is at 21% of its capacity with 14.2 hectometres and the Guadalhorce reservoir holds more than twice as much water as this: 35.39 hectometres, but is at 28%. As for the Guadalteba reservoir, it is still the one with the most water in the whole province with 62.2 hectometres and is already at 40% of its capacity.
– El Limonero (31.1%) has already dropped to six hectometres and Casasola (34.3%) still has seven hectometres, making it the two reservoirs in Malaga with the lowest reserves to date. The situation at the Concepción reservoir is similar to that of Guadalteba. It is currently the second reservoir in Malaga with the most water, with a total of 33 hectometres, which means that it is at 59% of its total capacity. Photo: Daniel Perez. Chaos in healthcare- “Waiting lists go up, operating rooms and staff close to the limit”: {Translation}
– Doctors and nurses from Malaga have gathered in front of the monument to health workers in the Plaza de la Solidaridad to denounce the “cuts” in hospitals and health centres.
– The Andalusian government “has reduced the workforce by 1,000 workers” in the province, by not renewing the contracts that ended on 30 June. This is a “very high” percentage of “drastically” reduced staff who “occupied structural and vacant posts”, denounced Juan Carlos Navas, secretary general of the CCOO Malaga health department.
– The union leader warns that the holiday plan is “insufficient” and services are being closed as there are no staff to attend to patients. The “workers themselves are appealing to users to make complaints”, because “they can’t cope any more, they can’t make it”: “The lack of professionals is so desperate that they are not going to be able to ensure the quality of care with the closure of rooms, operating theatres and outpatients’ surgeries. The waiting lists are going to skyrocket”.
– The rallies will continue to call for the recruitment of more staff. Source & photo credit, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/malaga/1313697/caos-en-la-sanidad-suben-las-listas-de-espera-cierran-quirofanos-y-personal-al-limite/

Wildfires near Athens prompt evacuations:
– A wildfire raging near Athens, Greece, has prompted authorities to evacuate a nearby residential community with thousands of seaside homes. The fire broke out in Kouvaras, roughly 27 kilometers (17 miles) southeast of the capital, damaging several homes. A spokesman for the regional fire department said, “It’s a difficult fire, the winds are really strong.”
– High winds with gusts of up to 70 kph (45 mph) have fanned the flames as it devours vegetation and threatens nearby buildings.
– Greek authorities say as many as 150 firefighters are on the scene, using 40 fire engines and 11 extinguishing aircraft to get the blaze under control.
– Greece’s Hellenic Fire Service also reported that a second blaze had broken out in woods near the resort town of Loutraki, about 90 kilometers west of Athens.
– On Monday evening, authorities said police arrested a “foreigner” for allegedly causing the fire near Kouvaras. Full article: https://www.dw.com/en/greece-wildfires-near-athens-prompt-evacuations/a-66256861

SCAMS
Guardia Civil warns about a popular ‘sick child donation scam’- how it works and what to look out for: {Translation}
– The Guardia Civil has warned through its social networks of a new type of scam that attempts to take advantage of good faith and compassion to deceive its victims. The new scam, dubbed by the Guardia Civil as the ‘donation scam’, is based on falsifying documents and appealing to people’s empathy for the supposed (and non-existent) plight of a supposedly sick child in order to obtain money.
– In the Guardia Civil’s post, the steps that the scammers follow to deceive the victims and get their hands on the money through lies are described:
*Location strategy: the scammers place themselves near busy places and hand out photocopied documents requesting financial help for a small child.
*Deceptive documentation: They use photocopies simulating official documents informing of a serious handicap of a minor.
*Lists of donations: they show lists of supposed donors to give credibility to the scam.
*They take advantage of compassion: they manipulate emotions by appealing to people’s good faith in order to obtain money.
– To avoid falling for this type of scam, the Guardia Civil urges people to try to verify the existence and authenticity of charities before making donations. They also recommend calling 062 if a scam of this type is detected or suffered.
