Just because Windows provides a good malware protection app for free, and does “Quick Scans” automatically, does not mean you should forget about security. You should run a Windows Security “full system scan” once a month. It may take a few hours to complete the scan. This link info applies to Win 10 and Win 11. Use the first method provided. Banks and Basura:
– Regarding the ATM story, there is an ATM in El Morche near the Costa Mar but it is one of those “will take any card but it charges you” types. We used to be able to use any Servired free but I’m not sure you still can. Haven’t tried lately.
– Update: I have just been reliably informed that Sabadell have installed an ATM near the Costa Mar Hotel in El Morche. Don’t know if it is working yet but it exists. Convenient for me but perhaps no so much for some others, still, closer than Nerja.
– Does anybody know where the recycling lorries go? Is there a proper recycling plant which picks out metal and sorts the rest? Because I’m beginning to wonder if I am wasting my time. I have five bins now at home when I used to have one but daily I see people chook anything anywhere. Minutes ago I saw a woman throw a plastic water bottle into the organic. The yellow bin was just behind her. This morning I watched the smart new robotic lorry pick up the organic bin and tip its contents into its container and there was a definite breaking glass sound. Just look into any brown bin and you will see cardboard, plastic, black bags etc.etc. Meanwhile I, and I suspect many of you, are buying special compostable bin liners, which in this weather have to be changed frequently unless you are manufacturing penicillin, nobody else seems to bother. I am all for recycling but feel I am fighting a losing battle. And what about all these new underground bins, all marked organic and not yet in use. I feel the council owes us some explanations, but I know from experience that if I write to them (in any language) I will not get an answer.

Javier’s Restaurante (Torrox Costa): Next to the bus station. SPAIN

Who will win Spain’s national election on Sunday? This is what the polls are saying:
– The polls ended on Monday with mixed forecasts. Some see a clear majority for the right, others give it a narrow majority and some see a left-wing government as more likely. Taking into account all this data and the natural error of the polls, what are the probabilities of each event?
– The following graph represents our estimate of seats based on the average of polls. The conservative Popular Party (PP) would have around 142 seats, followed by the Socialist Party (PSOE) with 108, the far-right Vox with 35 and the left-wing Sumar with 34. The rest of the political forces would have around 31 seats in total. AXARQUIA

Emergency works ordered by Junta at historically low La Viñuela reservoir:
– On Tuesday the governing council declared emergency works for the installation of surface pumps connected to the supply intake, to try to ensure that the water sent to the El Trapiche drinking water plant is of the highest possible quality. As the reservoir level becomes lower and lower, the quality of the remaining water is poorer, due to the presence of organic matter. For this reason, at the same time, all the animal species that inhabit the reservoir, such as fish and turtles, will be “eradicated” [sic; I sincerely hope they mean “removed in a humane manner” and not simply left to rot!].
– The budget is more than 700,000 euros and its execution will last eight months, according to a statement from the regional administration. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/axarquia/emergency-works-ordered-junta-historically-low-vinuela-20230719111720-nt.html

Lucky escape for lifeguard on Torrox beach after watchtower collapse: A lifeguard on the Ferrara beach in Torrox on Tuesday had a lucky escape after the watchtower he was standing on broke at the base, for reasons which are being investigated. He fell to the ground from a height of around three metres and was left lying unconscious. Dozens of bathers came to his rescue after hearing the crash. The emergency medical services and Local Police were also quickly mobilised. The young man, aged 18, and complaining of cervical pain, was transferred to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía. GRANADA

Bérchules is getting ready to celebrate its own New Year’s Eve: {Translation}
– The town of Bérchules in Granada is putting the finishing touches to its New Year’s Eve celebrations on Saturday, 5 August, with a host of activities.
– This festival is the result of a power cut on 31 December 1993. That Christmas, the residents, tourists and visitors of Bérchules and its anejo (annex) of Alcútar had to eat the twelve lucky grapes by lighting themselves with candles and lanterns. It has now become a major tourist attraction.
– Thousands of portions of grapes and mantecados {pic} will be handed out to those attending as part of a festive programme that will kick off the day before, on Friday the 4th from 18:00 hours, with the Children’s Party in the Plaza de la Constitución. In the evening, at 23:00 hours, it will continue with a live pop-rock concert: ‘Desidia’, ‘Desertores del Arao’ and ‘Dj Hulio’.
– From 9:00 a.m. onwards, there will be a traditional parade with a borriquilla (hard to translate this word, probably a procession, possibly with a donkey/burro?), accompanied by a charanga (brass band) while anisette and mantecados will be handed out.
– At midday, the Children’s New Year’s Eve for the little ones, including a foam party in the Plaza de la Iglesia. Afterwards, from 13:00 hours, the charanga (brass band) will be touring the bars of the municipality to liven up the tapas.
– In the afternoon, the parade of the borriquilla will continue, joined by their Majesties the Three Wise Men from the East, with the distribution of mantecados and anisette from the anejo of Alcútar to Bérchules, among other activities.
– At 23:00 a speech will be given this year by the Granada CF footballer, Alba Pérez, and the representative of the Grea-112 Unit, Joaquín Martín de Oliva. And at twelve o’clock at night will come the long awaited moment of the chimes and the cotillion (traditional country dance) with the welcome to 2023 and a half in the Plaza de la Iglesia. After the chimes the party will continue with live music. Source, Spanish: https://www.granadadigital.es/berchules-prepara-celebrar-particular-nochevieja/

PRODUCT ALERT

Bad Tortillas- Update: {Translation}
– The outbreak of botulism associated with packaged potato tortillas has so far left seven cases confirmed; four are in Madrid, Andalucia and the Valencia.
– The two confirmed cases in Galicia and Asturias, two people aged 49 and 50, respectively, have required treatment in the ICU, while a probable case detected in Madrid has also required his admission to the intensive care unit. All of them, the confirmed and the probable ones, have a history of having consumed pre-cooked potato omelette, packaged and purchased in different community supermarkets “with different brands”.
– Both Ahorramas, first, and Eroski, later, have reported that they have cautiously withdrawn the tortillas supplied by the Palacios group at the request of the authorities.
Editor’s Note: Evidently the problem may not be limited to the brand of tortilla mentioned in the warning in yesterday’s issue (Alipende potato omelettes, including those of the white label Palacios, with and without onion). Spain hits Apple and Amazon with €194M antitrust fine:
– Spain’s competition watchdog said Tuesday it has slapped US tech giants Amazon and Apple with fines totalling 194 million euros ($218 million) for collusion in the sale of products.
– The two firms had agreed to limit the sale of Apple products on Amazon’s Spanish websites by third-party resellers “which restricted competition,” the regulator said in a statement. Contractual provisions of a 2018 agreement between the companies meant only selected resellers picked by Apple were allowed to sell Apple products on Amazon.es, it added. “Over 90 percent of resellers who used Amazon’s website in Spain to sell Apple products were excluded from Spain’s main online market,” the statement said. SPACE

Perseid meteor shower 2023- How to see spectacular shooting stars:
– The Perseid meteor shower in 2023 starts on 17 July and will remain visible until 24 August.
– Peaking around the 12/13 August, there should be a decent helping of meteors continuing until the early hours of 14 August. The number of meteors visible will drop off after that, although we may still catch a glimpse of a few as we approach the tail end of the dust field.
– Clouds permitting, the night of the 12/13 and 13/14 August will yield the most meteors.
– As the name suggests, the “radiant” for the Perseids lies in the northern part of the constellation Perseus, next to Andromeda. As the Perseids are fast, they may leave persistent trains in the sky, and with any luck we may even be treated to a fireball. The constellation Perseus is in the north-eastern sky and sits nestled between the distinctive ‘W’ of the constellation Cassiopeia above, and everyone’s favourite, the Pleiades.
– If you’re struggling to find this point in the night sky, using an astronomy app may help. The “radiant” is the area where the shooting stars appear to originate from, judging from their tails, yet they will be visible over the whole sky. So, look up and try to take in as much of the sky in your vision as possible.
– Is there anything else I can see? On the night of the 12/13 and 13/14 August, a bright Saturn (magnitude 0.49) will start to peep over the horizon just after sunset, while Jupiter will follow shortly after. Jupiter will be sitting pretty with a bright magnitude of -2.33, so it will be easy to spot if you look towards the East. Full article: https://www.sciencefocus.com/news/perseid-meteor-shower-2023/
