Torrox Patron Saints procession:
– It is in the historic center next Saturday, starting at around 9:30 p.m. from the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación.
– The program of celebrations will include a Eucharist at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 5 with the parish choir, keeping the doors open throughout the day so that the faithful can visit the Patron Saints.
– At 8:00 p.m. the second Eucharist will take place in honor of the Patrons of the municipality, it will be sung by the Las Nieves rociero choir . At the end, the Virgen de las Nieves and San Roque will go through the streets of the historic center of Torrox in procession, where, presumably, they will not procession again for many years, since in the procession of the fair, they will move to their Hermitage after three years in the parish.
– The procession will be accompanied by the two Torrox bands. The Tecla y Bordón Musical Group will follow in the footsteps of San Roque, while the band of the Vive la Música Cultural Association will accompany the Virgen de las Nieves, as has been the tradition for many years. In the Plaza de la Constitución, the group of Choirs and Dances from Torrox will offer their dances in honor of the Patron Saints, followed by a fireworks display that will put the finishing touch to the procession. SPAIN

From Progressive Source- Feijóo (PP) wins, but Sánchez (PSOE) can govern if he is supported by Puigdemont:
{Translation} 24/07/2023, 00:51
– At 8 p.m. the polling stations closed their doors to begin counting the votes cast during the 23rd of July. The distance between the right-wing and left-wing blocs has been very tight throughout the vote count, leaving serious difficulties for the PP, which, although it won the election, did not obtain a majority to govern.
– The left-wing bloc formed by PSOE and Sumar, plus the leftist parties and with the support of the Catalan independence seeking party of Puigdemont, would together win 172 seats, while the right-wing bloc formed by PP and Vox, with the support of UPN and Coalición Canaria, would have a total of 171 deputies. With this scenario, Pedro Sánchez could re-edit his coalition government.
– The PSOE began the night as the leading political force, but as the vote count progressed, the Popular Party closed the gap, managing to pull ahead of the Socialists. Both parties battled for a large part of the night for the first place within a few votes of each other, although Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s party finally took first place with 136 seats compared to the 122 seats won by Pedro Sánchez’s party.
– Vox remains the third political force, although it has considerably reduced its number of seats compared to the general elections of November 2019, obtaining 33 seats in Congress. For its part, Sumar is the fourth most voted party in this 23J with 31 seats.
– For its part, ERC won 7 seats in the lower house, followed by Junts, which also won 7 seats. EH Bildu won 6 seats and the PNV 5 seats. The BNG, UPN and Coalición Canaria are represented in the Chamber of Deputies with one seat.
– The PP wins the elections, but the numbers do not allow it to form a government despite winning more seats than the left. PP and Vox have 169 seats, while PSOE and Sumar have 153 seats. The latter could revalidate the coalition government with the support of the nationalist parties.
– The distance between the two main political parties has been very close throughout the count. In total, the Populars won 8,005,013 votes, while the Socialists obtained 7,705,448 votes. A difference of 300,000 votes. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/espana/resultado-ajustado-bloques-derecha-izquierda-escrutado-20230723213149-nt.html

From Conservative Source- Spanish Election Results with 97% of the vote counted: {Translation, summary} 07/24/2023 00:22
– Alberto Núñez Feijóo (PP) has won the elections of 23 July, but without a sufficient majority to oust Pedro Sánchez from La Moncloa (official residence and workplace of the Prime Minister). With 97% of the vote counted, the PP is fourteen seats ahead of the PSOE (136 to 122), which suggests, with all due caution, that Sánchez will continue to lead the government thanks to the votes of Sumar (31 seats) and the required investiture support of his pro-independence (Catalan) partners.
– The PP’s victory, however, was more than bitter, it was pyrrhic and probably useless in the face of Pedro Sánchez’s sweet defeat. The resistance of the president of the government, who has improved his results from four years ago, puts the PSOE in a position to stay in La Moncloa, if it manages to unite all its investiture allies (Sumar, PNV, EH Bildu, BNG) in a coallition, and obtains, at least, the abstention of Carles Puigdemont’s Catalan party.
– Feijóo, in a Genova that pretended to be celebrating but could not, has said that his candidacy is the only one possible to govern Spain as he received the most votes. Everything else, he said, “is an anomaly”, because historically the winner of the elections always governs. “The Spaniards have said that we should dialogue”, he assured. “I believe that my duty is to open dialogue to try to govern our country in accordance with the electoral victory of the PP. I ask the PSOE and the other forces not to block the government of Spain once again”.
– “The PP and Vox bloc has been defeated. It has failed”, said a euphoric Sánchez, who seemed ready to prematurely launch himself into the investiture without issue, prior to addressing any of the terms these other parties will demand for their loyalty. “There are more of us, many more of us who want Spain to move forward and that will continue to be the case”. (The Popular Party has won in 40 of the 52 provinces. Sanchez (PSOE) is claiming there are “many more of us”, when he lost the popular vote and may only survive by the thinnist of margins. Gotta admire his optimism. -Ed.)
– For his part, Feijóo gained 3 million votes, 12 points and 47 deputies with respect to the results in 2019. But the PP leader has not even come close to the results predicted by the polls. His 136 seats are a far cry from the 150 seats projected. And they are the main reason why the right-wing bloc has fallen far short of an absolute majority that was taken for granted 24 hours ago.
– Vox, which would remain as the third political force, would lose a minimum of 19 seats compared to those obtained in 2019, it has dropped from 52 seats to 33. It can no longer provide the number of seats it needed to provide the PP a winning coalition partner. Source, Spanish: https://www.vozpopuli.com/espana/politica/elecciones-generales/espana-entierra-sanchismo-feijoo-gobernara-necesitara-apoyo-vox.html

**********

Editor’s Note- Is a re-vote possible?: For Sanchez to assemble a sufficient coalition, all these lefty parties will have to support him, and you can be sure each has already prepared a list of demands that must be met to secure their support. That may prove difficult. Sanchez will also require the support, or at least the abstention, of the independence-minded Catalan party of Puigdemont, who will also have demands. So the final result remains to be determined. If Sanchez fails to assemble a successful coalition, and the PP cannot gain a majority, a new national election could be the result. As I understand it, we must wait for the new parliament to take their seats and assemble before a new election can be declared.

Workers in Spain lose average of almost 850 euros of purchasing power in last year:
– Spain’s average salary has risen to a record-high of 1,822 euros per month after a 4% increase in the past year, the second highest rise since 2008. But due to inflation, the raise in salary is not resulting in greater purchasing power among Spanish workers. In fact, they are spending less when they go shopping than a year earlier. Last summer inflation reached double digits, the highest it had been in three decades.
– In 2022 the average salary lost 4% of purchasing power, equivalent to 70 euros per month less, 843 euros less per year, according to the IX Adecco Wage Monitor, published this Thursday 20 July.
– Workers now have less purchasing power than in 2017 and even than in 2008, when the great financial crisis hit, the study pointed out. Over the past five years, a fall in the purchasing power of average pay of 2.5% has accumulated. That cut is equivalent to a loss of almost 44 euros per month or 523 euros per year compared to 2017. And when compared to 2008 data, the results worsen, as the purchasing power of the average salary in 2022 is 7% lower than in 2008. COSTA DEL SOL

Hot ‘terral’ wind returns to Malaga and Costa del Sol bringing with it a new yellow warning for Monday:
– After saying goodbye to a week marked by stifling heat, with highs above 40C, the province will face the final stretch of July with the mercury on the rise again. Spain’s state meteorological agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow warning for high temperatures for Monday. The alert will be in force between 1pm and 9pm tomorrow, with the possibility of highs of 36 degrees along the western stretch of the Costa del Sol (from Malaga to Estepona) and inland points of the Guadalhorce valley.
– “On Monday and Tuesday maximum temperatures will fall in many parts of Andalucía, but will rise where the westerly ‘terral’ wind blows from inland, as is the case in areas of the province of Malaga and inland Almeria,” said weather expert José Luis Escudero. SALOBREÑA

The Board prohibits bathing in an area of La Charca de Salobreña beach: {Translation, summary}
– The Ministry of Health and Consumption of the Junta de Andalucía, through the Territorial Delegation in Granada, has issued this Friday the resolution prohibiting bathing in an area of La Charca beach, corresponding to the municipality of Salobreña. The report signed this day, after the analysis carried out by the Sanitary Surveillance Service of Bathing Waters of Andalusia, reveals an “alteration in the concentration of intestinal enterococcus microbiological parameters”. In it, they indicate a “nearby spillway” as a possible cause. Source, Spanish: https://www.granadadigital.es/prohibe-bano-zona-playa-la-charca-salobrena/

Tennis News- Weary Djokovic withdraws from Toronto ATP Masters:
– The announcement comes a week after the 23-time Grand Slam champion from Serbia fell to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the final at Wimbledon. His withdrawal deprives the US Open tune-up tournament that starts on August 7 of a four-time champion.
– “I have always enjoyed my time in Canada, but after speaking with my team, we believe this is the right decision to take,” Djokovic said in a statement released by Tennis Canada.
– Wimbledon quarter-finalist Christopher Eubanks will now gain automatic entry into the Toronto main draw. Full article: https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230723-weary-djokovic-withdraws-from-toronto-atp-masters-organizers

Golf News- Brian Harman dominates Open Championship, wins by 6 at Royal Liverpool:
– Harman was unflappable in the final round in his quest for his first major title, shooting a one-under 70 at Hoylake as he cruised to the Claret Jug by six shots.
– Harman began the day with a five-stroke lead, and the margin remained intact for much of the day. Each misstep was met with a a birdie as his lead never shrunk below three. Despite making three bogeys on the day, four birdies – along with the five-stroke cushion he’d built through three rounds – were more than enough to keep the chasers at arm’s length and earn him his first major title.
– Teeing off several groups ahead of Harman, McIlroy came out of the gates with a flurry, birdieing three of his first five holes. But, much like on Saturday, his round stalled as he could only muster level-par golf from there in to finish with a 68. Although the T6-finish is good enough for his 30th career major top 10, his winless drought in the big ones has now extended to 10 years. F1 News- Max Verstappen wins Hungarian GP 2023 after Lewis Hamilton’s shocking start:
– World champion finishes a crushing 33 seconds ahead of second-placed Lando Norris to secure a record 12th consecutive win for Red Bull. Verstappen {pic} started second after qualifying on Saturday but zoomed past Hamilton heading into the first corner and never looked back.
– It was a nightmare start for Hamilton after his first pole since 2021, with the two McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Norris also leapfrogging him at turn one, and ended in a disappointing fourth-place finish. Apple Threatens to Pull iMessage and FaceTime from U.K. Amid Surveillance Demands:
– Apple has warned that it would rather stop offering iMessage and FaceTime services in the U.K. than bowing down to government pressure in response to new proposals that seek to expand digital surveillance powers available to state intelligence agencies.
– The development makes the iPhone maker the latest to join the chorus of voices protesting against forthcoming legislative changes to the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA) 2016 in a manner that would effectively render encryption protections ineffective.
– Specifically, the Online Safety Bill requires companies to install technology to scan for child sex exploitation and abuse (CSEA) material and terrorism content in encrypted messaging apps and other services. It also mandates that messaging services clear security features with the Home Office before releasing them and take immediate action to disable them if required WITHOUT INFORMING THE PUBLIC! (Without what!?! How is this even conceivable by public representatives? It is the antithesis of representation! -Ed.)
