SPAIN

Tenerife forest fire is “out of control” and affects 800 hectares: {Translation, summary}
– A forest fire that broke out on Tuesday night between the municipalities of Arafo and Candelaria, in the northeast of Tenerife, already affects some 800 hectares, according to information from the 112 Canary Islands Emergency Service. The flames, which forced the preventive evacuation of several towns and the blocking of two highways, have spread in less than 24 hours through the municipalities of neighboring areas, such as Santa Úrsula and La Victoria.
– The fire is very strong and is in a complicated area,” the president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, assured this Wednesday, who also pointed out that it has several sources. “It is out of control”, added the regional president in a speech recorded and broadcast through social networks this afternoon. There are 13 air assets, 150 ground troops and 60 members of police forces at work in the area, according to regional data from 2:00 p.m. this Wednesday. The Military Emergency Unit has already been mobilized. EUROPE

Here Come The Biometric Scanners (face & fingerprints)- France Orders 544 Kiosks & 250 Tablets for new border Entry/Exit System (EES):
– Preparations for the new border management system of the European Union – the Entry Exit System (EES) – are underway in France. The EES is a new security system for the management of external borders of the EU, initiated back in 2017. Through the same, the EU intends to become a safer territory, by collecting biometric information of those entering and leaving its territory, as well as preventing from entering those posing any type of threat to its security.
– “In less than one minute, third-country nationals will thus be pre-registered and have their identity verified at Thales kiosks deployed at French airports, train stations and ports,” the company claims.
– “The kiosks have been tested in Paris and are being reworked for improvements. But we will be ready, especially as we are sure now EES will start after the Olympics, even perhaps at the start of 2025,” the delegate of the Union of French Airports, Nicolas Paulissen, has told the Connexion France. German cabinet approves plans to legalise cannabis for recreational use:
– The German government approved a draft law Wednesday legalising the purchase and possession of cannabis for recreational use, with the health minister pushing back against criticism of the controversial plans.
– The legislation would allow adults to possess up to 25 grams (0.9 ounces) of cannabis and grow up to three plants for personal use. People would also be allowed to join non-profit “cannabis clubs” of up to 500 members where the drug can be legally cultivated and purchased.
– The bill still needs to be approved by lawmakers in the German parliament, who return from their summer break on September 4. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach called the draft law “a turning point” in Germany’s attitude towards cannabis. Decriminalising the drug while imposing a number of restrictions and spelling out the dangers of cannabis use “will work”, Lauterbach insisted. Entry/Exit System (EES) to Double Queuing Times at UK-French Border, French Watchdog Predicts:
– According to the report, the EES, the launch date of which remains unknown so far, might even triple queuing times at the border between the UK and France.
– The EES is a new border system through which the EU intends to modernise the management of external borders by registering data on non-EU nationals entering and leaving the EU and Schengen Area territory. Through it, the EU plans to enhance security for both its citizens and visitors.
– The equipment that will be planted at the EU borders will collect facial biometrics and fingerprints for those passing through for the first time after its launch. TECH

Google Chrome’s latest AI feature is bad news for authors:
– Google continues to sprinkle AI into its product line with a new feature coming to its Search Generative Experience (SGE), where Google’s Chrome web browser will summarize the articles you’re reading in an instant pop-up.
– We won’t see the new feature right away, which Google has named “SGE while browsing”. The generated summary will begin rolling out next week Tuesday as an “early experiment” within the opt-in Search Labs, a program for people to experiment with early Google Search experiences and share feedback. Interestingly, it will be available on mobile before the Chrome browser on desktop, so keep your eyes peeled while you’re Googling on Android or iOS.
– This feature could certainly be super helpful, especially if you’re looking for concise information very quickly. However, it may be bad news for the people writing the content.
– If you’ve spent time and energy to really flesh out your article, give your topic context and personality and people are just given summaries and skip over that, it may be discouraging. Especially if you’re writing about sensitive or serious topics, if the generated summaries are leaving out crucial information people may only go with the presented points and leave behind something important or useful (like mixing cleaning products or medication information).
– Content creators may not be happy about the new change. CEO of Alphabet and Google, Sundar Pichai, said that “over time this will just be how Search works” so, I guess we’ll have to get used to it.
– To see a good demonstration if this in action, visit the article linked below.

iOS 17- These are all the new features and tweaks:
– Yesterday, Apple released iOS 17 beta 6 to registered developers. As the company is expected to make iOS 17 available to all users a month from now, the Cupertino firm is still tweaking its operating system with new features. Here’s everything we know so far about the latest update.
– Apple is tweaking the State of Mind feature by sharpening the animations that appear when you log how you feel. According to the company, logging your emotions and daily moods can help you “identify patterns and reflect on what impacts your state of mind.” In addition, this will be combined with an upcoming Journal app, which is expected to land later this year.
Editors comment:
– Your iPhone now logs your daily feelings? And soon they want your journal entries? And they will provide you this service for free? It’s simply a way to collect more accurate data about you. Nothing online is totally free. The greater the detail, the more valuable your data when they pass it on to their business partners. In addition, your intimate data will be stored in the often-hacked cloud, so it may as well be public.
– I strongly suggest you keep personal, private matters entirely off the internet! I suspect these developers will try to identify your weak, vulnerable times, or perhaps the time of day you start your second bottle of tinto, and use that to their advantage in their targeted advertising schemes! -Ed.
