AXARQUIA

Traffic between Nerja and Torrox on the A-7 motorway will be affected this week: {Translation}
– The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) has announced that traffic on the A-7 motorway will be affected next week due to improvement works in tunnels located in the municipalities of Nerja and Torrox, in the province of Malaga.
– The Government reminds that in the province of Malaga work is being carried out to improve and modernise several tunnels on the aforementioned motorway, including the Capistrano tunnel, in the municipality of Nerja, and the Torrox tunnel, in the municipality of Torrox itself.
– For this reason, and to guarantee the safety of workers and users, from 22:00 hours on Monday 11 September until 06:00 hours on Friday 15 September, alternating lanes will be closed daily depending on the needs of the works in both tunnels, between kilometre points 929.600 – 931.450 and 935.300 – 937.400 (increasing mileage) of the A-7.
– The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) will also carry out maintenance work on the toll-free section of the AP-7 motorway as it passes through the municipality of Benalmádena, in the province of Málaga.
– The works, which will be carried out at night, consist of the maintenance of the joints of the structures of the Benalmádena junction between kilometres 1,003 and 1,003.250, in both directions, although not simultaneously. The works will begin in the Algeciras direction and, once completed, will be carried out in the Barcelona direction.
– To guarantee the safety of workers and road users, from 22.00 hours next Monday, 11 September, the right lane between the indicated kilometre points will be closed to traffic, with the completion date estimated for the following week, depending on the progress of the work.
– There will be no lane closures between 06.30 and 22.00 hours, nor at weekends, and traffic will be restored from 06.30 hours on Fridays. The lane closures will allow traffic to pass through the road at all times. NERJA

Dateline Maro- Arrest made for the violent death of a man in Maro, the second murder this year in sleepy Maro: {Translation}
– The Guardia Civil has arrested a middle-aged citizen of foreign origin for the allegedly fatal attack on a man of American nationality (other sources say both men were German, or that the attacker was Russian and the victim German)  in a cave area of the Barranco de Maro, in Nerja. The events took place on Friday afternoon, when several witnesses alerted the emergency services when they found a body with severe head trauma.
– The officers of the Armed Forces quickly went to the scene, together with the local police and the health services. In the vicinity, after collecting numerous testimonies, they proceeded to arrest a citizen of foreign origin, who had been living in the area for several months, in one of the numerous inhabited caves in this natural and agricultural environment located between the hamlet of Maro and the town centre of Nerja.
– This is the second such crime in this same area recently, after the death of a Czech citizen at the end of March, presumably as a result of blows inflicted by another person of the same nationality. In that case, the incident took place in the area of the road that connects Maro with the beach, approximately one kilometre from this Friday’s murder. A Czech national was arrested last July for this first murder.
– This Friday’s incident is said to have originated after several months of disputes and fights between the alleged perpetrator and the victim. Apparently, as SUR has been able to confirm, the deceased had written a message on social networks just ten days ago in which he warned that he was being threatened with death. “An organised group of criminals is planning to kill me and get rid of my body”, he wrote on 28 August on his Facebook profile, “If I disappear, they murdered me. If I am found at the bottom of a cliff, I was pushed and thrown. If I am found dead under any normal or unusual circumstances, I was definitely murdered,” said the victim, with initials K. D.

PRODUCT ALERT

EU Issues Health Warning- Moroccan olives with “serious risk” due to high level of pesticide arrive in Spain:
– The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) of the European Union has issued an alert on the sale in our country of Moroccan olives containing high levels of a pesticide not authorised in the EU.
– The RASFF carried out a border check on 18 August, during which it found olives imported from Morocco ready for distribution. However, the results of an analysis carried out on this olive product revealed the presence of a pesticide in higher than permitted proportions. Thus, the levels detected in these Moroccan olives were 0.067 mg/kg-ppm, when their Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) is set at 0.01 mg/kg – ppm. Thus, they have been qualified as serious risk olives by the EU.
– Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate insecticide widely used in households and agriculture. As explained by the US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, it has been used in agriculture to control pests in crops, especially citrus fruits. Moreover, according to Pesticide Action Network, it is “an organophosphate pesticide known to have harmful effects on the human nervous system”.
– This summer, Andalusian farmers have denounced the “unfair competition” caused by the introduction of fruit and vegetables from Morocco into the EU market, a “fraud” that is damaging both the sector and consumers. This week, the European Commission launched a health alert for Moroccan watermelons contaminated with unauthorised pesticides and COAG has detected melons from the same source in Almeria with 600% more toxic products than legally permitted. SCIENCE

Early human ancestors turned stones into spheres on purpose, study suggests:
– Early ancestors of humans 1.4m years ago deliberately made stones into spheres, according to a study – though what the prehistoric people used the balls for remains a mystery. Archaeologists have long debated exactly how the tennis ball-sized “spheroids” were created.
– Research led by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem suggests our ancestors knew what they were doing. The team of scientists examined 150 limestone spheroids dating from 1.4m years ago that were found at the ’Ubeidiya archaeological site in the north of modern-day Israel. Using 3D analysis to reconstruct the geometry of the stones, the researchers determined that their sphericalness was “likely to have been produced intentionally”.
– Julia Cabanas, an archaeologist at France’s National Museum of Natural History, who was not involved in the research, said this meant that the hominins had a “mentally preconceived” idea of what they were doing. That in turn indicates that our ancient relatives had the cognitive capacity to plan and carry out such work. Excavation Reveals Steps Where Jesus Healed Blind Man 2,000 Years Ago:
– Steps leading to the Pool of Siloam, where the Bible explains that Jesus sent a man born blind to wash after he was healed, have been excavated in an unfolding project to unearth the pool and its surroundings.
– The Israel Antiquities Authority, the Israel National Parks Authority and the City of David Foundation began excavations to build upon discoveries made in 2004. Archeologists have now revealed eight steps descending into the pool.
– “The ongoing excavations within the City of David – the historic site of Biblical Jerusalem – particularly of the Pool of Siloam and the Pilgrimage Road, serve as one of the greatest affirmations of that heritage and the millennia-old bond Jews and Christians have with Jerusalem,” Ze’ev Orenstein, director of International Affairs for the City of David Foundation said, noting the excavations allow the Bible to be embraced “not simply as a matter of faith, but as a matter of fact.” Photo: Twitter @JewishPress.
