SPAIN

Brussels raises Spain’s economic growth to 2.2% in 2023, but lowers it to 1.9% in 2024: {Translation}
– The European Commission on Monday revised its forecast for Spanish GDP growth in 2023 upwards by three tenths of a percentage point to 2.2 %, but lowered it by one tenth of a percentage point for 2024, to 1.9 %, due to the moderation of economic activity in the second half of this year and the first half of next year.
– The summer macroeconomic forecasts published by the EU executive also project inflation to fall to 3.6 % in 2023, four tenths of a percentage point lower than its forecasts of last May, and to stand at 2.9 % in 2024, two tenths of a percentage point higher than the previous estimate.
– Spain would thus record the highest growth rate among the large eurozone economies both this year and next, according to the Brussels report, which has revised its forecasts for the single currency area downwards by three tenths of a percentage point in both years, to 0.8 % and 1.3 %, respectively. MALAGA PROVINCE

Malaga joins protests to stop Sánchez from passing an amnesty law: {Translation}
– “Spain is not for sale” and “Pedro Sánchez, resign”. These are two of the slogans that were chanted this Sunday in the demonstrations that took place against a possible amnesty law that could be approved by the government in response to the demands of the former president of the Generalitat, Carles Puigdemont. These protests responded to a call that began to spread like wildfire through social networks, inviting those interested to gather at 12:00 in the morning in front of the “town halls of each and every town and city in Spain against the possible amnesty law that would allow pro-independence supporters to laugh at Spanish democracy, supported by Pedro Sánchez”.
– Hundreds of people attended the demonstration in front of Malaga City Hall to express their displeasure with a hypothetical investiture of Sánchez in exchange for pardons. Accompanied by flags, the attendees chanted the aforementioned slogans and insisted on calling for Sánchez’s resignation. Something they extended to the acting vice-president, Yolanda Díaz, who met this week with the leader of Junts in Brussels.
– The protests, which were replicated in numerous cities across the country, also reached other municipalities in the province. Numerous people also gathered outside the town halls of Marbella and Fuengirola to raise their voices against a possible pardon for Puigdemont.
– Another common point among the demonstrators was to consider the hypothetical pardon for Puigdemont as a “humiliation”. These demonstrations do not have any political grouping behind them. At least not officially. Many of the demonstrators assured that they intend to repeat these protests every Sunday to prevent Puigdemont’s demands from being met. AXARQUIA

La Viñuela reservoir is in agony as it awaits a rainy autumn: {Translation, summary}
– “It is barely at 8 percent of its capacity, twelve cubic hectometres of water in the reservoir, which means that in a few months we will have practically no water for supply,” Gregorio Campos, vice-president of Axaragua – the public water company that supplies the enclave – and mayor of the municipality of Iznate, warned EFE.
– Despite an “imperceptible” rise of 0.02 hectometres due to last weekend’s rains, Campos hopes that the next season will be more favourable after contacting the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which forecasts a “rainy autumn” as the temperature of the Mediterranean has risen this summer.
– “The situation has been getting worse day by day, it is quite complicated,” says the mayor of Iznate. “As well as having little quantity of water, we also have poor quality” due to the nitrate residues, heavy and non-heavy metals in the surrounding area and the fact that what we have today is practically “mud” due to the low level of the reservoir. However, Campos appeals for “calm”, because, although treating this water is “more costly” due to these circumstances, the supply that reaches the residents of La Axarquía “is of good quality”.
– If the drought persists and “a sixth year” is reached in these conditions, according to Campos, it would be necessary for the administrations to look for “other resources” in the longer term, such as resorting to desalinating water from the Mediterranean. Geographer and professor at the University of Malaga (UMA) José Damián Sinoga considers that, although it is a “useful” and “functional” measure, water desalination presents some difficulties, such as the high cost of energy and the management of the brine, which could not be returned to the sea because it would damage the ecosystem.

Nerja Beach Report:

SPORTS

Tennis News- Davidovich to lead Spain in the Davis Cup this week as Alcaraz withdraws:
– Malaga tennis star Alejandro Davidovich, currently ranked 25th in the world, has unexpectedly become the number one player on the Spanish Davis Cup team. This comes after Carlos Alcaraz officially withdrew from playing in the group stage in Valencia having been hampered by minor leg muscle discomfort during the US Open. Ultimately, he was eliminated in the semi-finals after defeat to Russian Daniil Medvedev on Saturday. In addition to Alcaraz, the Spain team must also cope with the absences of both Rafael Nadal and Pablo Carreño, who are both outside the top 100 due to inactivity.
– As a result of Alcaraz’s withdrawal, the Spanish Tennis Federation announced that Albert Ramos, a 35-year-old veteran from Barcelona, would take his place for the games taking place from Tuesday to Sunday this week. Ramos has had previous experience in the Davis Cup, having been part of the squad in last year’s Finals in Malaga and achieving good results in 2023.
– His late inclusion means that the Spanish Davis Cup team now consists of Davidovich {pic}, Ramos, Roberto Bautista (ranked 42nd despite being sidelined since mid-July with an ankle sprain), Bernabé Zapata (ranked 75th) and doubles specialist Marcel Granollers.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLEGENCE (AI)

You need to talk to your kid about AI. Here are 6 things you should say:
– In the past year, kids, teachers, and parents have had a crash course in artificial intelligence, thanks to the wildly popular AI chatbot ChatGPT. In a knee-jerk reaction, some schools, such as the New York City public schools, banned the technology- only to cancel the ban months later. Now that many adults have caught up with the technology, schools have started exploring ways to use AI systems to teach kids important lessons on critical thinking.
– But it’s not just AI chatbots that kids are encountering in schools and in their daily lives. AI is increasingly everywhere- recommending shows to us on Netflix, helping Alexa answer our questions, powering your favorite interactive Snapchat filters and the way you unlock your smartphone.
– At the start of the new school year, here are MIT Technology Review’s six essential tips for how to get started on giving your kid an AI education.
1. Don’t forget: AI is not your friend
2. AI models are not replacements for search engines
3. Teachers might accuse you of using an AI when you haven’t
4. Recommendation systems are designed to get you hooked and might show you bad stuff
5. Remember to use AI safely and responsibly
6. Don’t miss out on what AI’s actually good at

PETS

The new limit on the number of pets you can have at home with the Spanish Animal Welfare Law: {Translation}
– From September 29, new regulations will have to be complied with and among the new developments is the limit on the number of pets that can be kept at home.
– The new Animal Welfare Law establishes that the limit of domestic pets that can be had is five units, but if you already have 6 or more and want to keep them after September 29, you will have to have a special permit. The solution is only: go to the competent authorities, in this case the town hall of residence, and notify the possession or desire to have a large group of different animals in a home.
– This begins two processes. The first thing the administration must do will be to check the personal case of ownership of various pets. Theoretically this ‘research’ should be carried out in any case when an animal is to be registered as a domestic pet. The second part is that when trying to notify a large group, a report is requested from the veterinarian so that a professional can certify and verify the well-being of all the animals.
– This permit can be refused both for the personal case and if there is an unfavorable report from a professional veterinarian. In this case, the possession of five animals or more will not be permitted, so the owner must give the pets to a specialized center with the corresponding license. If this step is skipped, the owner will be exposed to a harsh penalty that could amount to up to 200,000 euros if the crime is considered to be very serious.
