ANDALUCIA
Finally…Some Good News- Forest fires have resulted in 80% fewer hectares burnt this summer in Andalucia + disaster drills info: {Translation, summary}
– The number of hectares burned has decreased by 80 percent compared to the usual annual figures of the last ten years. This year 1,697 hectares have been affected, compared to the average of more than 9,000 hectares in the last decade.
– By provinces, Huelva has been the most affected of all with a total of 116 actions in forest fires and 430.81 hectares burned. It was followed by Almería, with 83 forest fire actions and 309 hectares affected; Granada, with 77 forest fire actions and 209 hectares affected; and Málaga, with 74 forest fire actions and 112.05 hectares affected. The province of Cadiz, pending the outcome of the Algeciras fire, has been the least affected this year by the virulence of these fires.
– Also announced was that at the end of October a new regional emergency drill will be carried out to deal with possible earthquakes. This year it will be the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga which will lead the exercise, with the aim of testing the coordination and response mechanisms in the event of a major emergency with a risk to people and the environment. On this occasion the action to be taken in the event of an earthquake, accidents involving hazardous substances in both industrial and road transport accidents will be evaluated, as well as action in the event of coastal pollution and forest fires.
– The province of Cadiz will be involved in three serious risk drills: a tank fire involving hazardous substances, a forest fire and coastal pollution in the Bay of Algeciras. In Malaga, meanwhile, drills will be carried out on a spill scenario that will reach the municipality of Estepona. In addition, a drill will also be carried out on an earthquake scenario with damage in Marbella. MALAGA PROVINCE
Drought also hits chestnuts- Malaga loses 80% of production: {Translation}
– The Agricultural Association of Young Farmers (ASAJA) has warned of the loss of more than 80 % of the production of blond and early chestnuts in the Genal Valley (Malaga) due to the lack of rainfall. We are not going to generate hardly any income, but it is going to cost us money because the work has to continue for many reasons: vegetable, environmental, etc.
– Such is the lack of produce that some cooperatives in the area have announced that they will not open their doors this year, according to the group, who have specified that 20% of the crop has been saved with fruit of the Portuguese variety, which, because it ripens earlier, has been less affected by the drought and which they emphasise is a high quality product.
– According to ASAJA, the lack of rainfall causes this short term drop in production, but in the long term, the effects of the drought are leading to the gradual disappearance of the trees. “We have spent years trying to control the wasp plague, and now that it is more or less under control, these extreme temperatures and lack of rainfall have put an end to this production”, emphasised a chestnut grower, Salvador Sánchez, from the town of Genalguacil in Malaga.
– The meteorological situation has also brought forward what is known as the Copper Forest, due to the colour of the leaves on the trees, which at this point “are at the point where they should be at the end of autumn”. As is the case in other agricultural areas of the province, the problem in the region is the “lack of water and infrastructure to make the most of it”, emphasised the Igualeja chestnut grower Isabel Vázquez. TORROX
Protest against Endesa’s electricity substation next to several educational centres in Torrox: {Translation, summary}
– Leukaemia, insomnia and heart problems. These are some of the pathologies that worry the more than 3,000 people who have already signed against the electricity substation that ENDESA began to build a few months ago next to three schools and a hundred houses. They are fighting for the Torrox Town Hall (Málaga) to back down, stop the works and look for a new location.
– They have already staged several protests and the next one will be this Friday, at 20.00 hours, in the Plaza de la Constitución. But time is running against them, as the deadline for the project is one year. For this reason, they are asking for all possible support to prevent Endesa and the town council from going ahead and putting into operation a substation that worries them, above all, for the health and well-being of the children. UK
UK leader Rishi Sunak delays ban on new gas and diesel cars by 5 years in contentious climate shift:
– Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced Wednesday that he’s delaying by five years a ban on new gas and diesel cars that had been due to take effect in 2030, watering down climate goals that he said imposed “unacceptable costs” on ordinary people.
– The move angered green groups, opposition politicians and large chunks of U.K. industry, but was welcomed by some in the governing Conservative Party who chafe at the expense of ending the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
– At a news conference, Sunak said he was moving the deadline for buying new gasoline and diesel cars from 2030 to 2035, weakening a ban on new new natural-gas home furnaces due to start in 2035, and scrapping a requirement for landlords to make properties more energy-efficient. He said he would keep a promise to reduce the U.K.’s emissions of climate-warming greenhouse gases to net zero by 2050, but with “a more pragmatic, proportionate, and realistic approach.”
– In a statement designed at least in part to woo voters ahead of an election next year, Sunak rejected environmental proposals including new aviation taxes, measures to encourage car-pooling and taxes on meat – none of which has actually been introduced. To meet net-zero goals, he said, the government will build more windfarms and nuclear reactors, invest in new green technologies and introduce new measures to protect nature. EUROPE
EU Commission proposes allowing controversial weedkiller glyphosate (Roundup by Monsanto) for another ten years:
– The European Union’s 27 member states will discuss the proposal on Friday. It has to be approved by a weighted majority of countries during a meeting on October 13. The current authorisation expired in December 2022, but was extended by a year pending a scientific study of the herbicide, one of the most widely used weed-killers in the world.
– The proposal comes after the European Food Safety Authority in July said it had not found “any critical areas of concern” preventing glyphosate from being reauthorised, sparking a backlash from environmental groups.
– Environmental activists said there was scientific evidence that glyphosate may cause cancer, poison aquatic life and can be fatal to key pollinators like bees. SPORTS
Football News- Most Spanish women footballers rejoin squad after deal:
– The announcement followed hours of negotiations over player demands for further changes at the Spanish football federation (RFEF) after ex-president Luis Rubiales resigned. The exact terms have not been announced.
– “We have arrived at a series of agreements which will be drawn up and signed tomorrow” between the RFEF and the Spanish government, Victor Francos, secretary of state for sports, told reporters, adding that two of the 23 called-up players did not wish to continue with the squad. Secretary of state for sport Francos, who is also the president of Spain’s High Council for Sports (CSD), said the two women who decided not to play would not face sanctions. They had faced possible fines of between €3,000 and €30,000 ($3,200 and $32,100), while they could also have lost their licences to play for up to five years. SPACE
NASA spacecraft delivering biggest sample yet from an asteroid:
– A NASA spacecraft will fly by Earth on Sunday and drop off what is expected to be at least a cupful of rubble it grabbed from the asteroid Bennu, closing out a seven-year quest. The sample capsule will parachute into the Utah desert as its mothership, the Osiris-Rex spacecraft, zooms off for an encounter with another asteroid.
– Sunday’s landing concludes a 4 billion-mile (6.2-billion-kilometer) journey highlighted by the rendezvous with the carbon-rich Bennu, a unique pogo stick-style touchdown and sample grab, a jammed lid that sent some of the stash spilling into space, and now the return of NASA’s first asteroid samples.
