Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

A new episode of hot terral wind could raise the mercury in Malaga to an unseasonal 34C:
– There is no respite from the heat in Spain. The extraordinary episode of high temperatures and lack of rain, which affects the whole of the country, will continue without any major changes until next weekend.
– In Andalucía the heat does not offer much of a let up either and in the case of Malaga province a new episode of hot terral wind could leave maximum temperature of up to 34C on Saturday, according to the current Aemet forecast.
– “There is a probability that we will have terral on Saturday 14th October in the usual areas of Malaga province. The maximum temperatures will be between 29 and 33 degrees where the westerly wind comes in from the land, while in other areas of the province the thermometers will be between 24 and 28 degrees,” said José Luis Escudero on his SUR blog ‘Storms and lightning’. ANDALUCIA

Healthcare Crisis- CCOO denounces that more than one million people are on health waiting lists in Andalucía- average waiting time for surgery is 134 days, and 25% of patients awaiting surgery wait more than six months: {Translation}
– The Federation of Health and Social and Health Sectors of CCOO of Andalucía has prepared a report based on data from all the autonomous communities and updated to December 2022 of the Information System of Waiting Lists of the National Health System (SNS), which highlights “the situation of lack of control” in the management of waiting lists in Andalucía, where “1. 053,374 people” are waiting for surgery or a first appointment in specialised care – the “highest” number since records have been kept – which represents an increase of “more than 200,000 people since the Popular Party has been in power”.
– According to CCOO in a statement, the report aims to x-ray the reality of Andalucian health post-pandemic and compare it with the whole of Spain, hence its focus on the period between June 2021 and December 2022. Thus, it states that the aforementioned document shows that Andalucía “worsens” with respect to itself and the autonomous communities as a whole and, moreover, “in a particularly accelerated manner” between June and December 2022, just the period in which the Junta de Andalucía has not published its data.
– A worsening that cannot be justified either by the lack of doctors, which affects the whole country – indeed, in Andalucía the ratio of specialist doctors per 1,000 inhabitants is increasing – or by the pandemic, since Andalucía was one of the autonomous regions with the lowest incidence and mortality from Covid,” maintains Daniel Gutiérrez, head of the FSS-CCOO Andalucia’s analysis and studies department.
– Therefore, neither the lack of doctors nor the consequences of the pandemic “can be based” that the surgical waiting lists “grow three times faster in Andalucía than in Spain, that half of the increase in the number of patients waiting for surgery in the whole of Spain is due to Andalucía or that in just 18 months it has gone from having better figures than the whole country to having them clearly worse”.
– “The deterioration of these indicators is not due to external causes but to a clear example of mismanagement that the Andalucian government is trying to hide, by not publishing its own waiting list data for more than a year, and intends to solve by diverting 734 million of public money to private healthcare”, says the secretary general of the FSS-CCOO Andalucía, José-Pelayo Galindo, who considers that the privatisation of the waiting list “is a costly solution for Andalusians, weakens the public health system and leads to an increase in the list in the long term”.
– According to CCOO, the figures “speak for themselves: there have never been so many Andalusians waiting for surgery. The average waiting time for surgery is 134 days – 14 days longer than in Spain – and 25% of patients awaiting surgery wait more than six months, five points longer than in the whole country. Moreover, as with other indicators, Andalucía has gone “from being better than Spain as a whole to being worse”. “If the rest of the communities have suffered from the pandemic, most of them more severely than us, we cannot blame this situation for our progressive and accelerated deterioration,” adds Daniel Gutiérrez.
– Average time to see a specialist is 123 days. In terms of waiting lists for a first appointment in specialised care, the autonomous community “remains, in terms of rate per 1,000 inhabitants, more than 20 points above the Spanish average: 881,000 Andalucians, 10% of the population, are waiting for an appointment with a hospital specialist”. Likewise, the average waiting time “has shot up to 123 days, the longest in Spain and double the time guaranteed by law to be seen”.
– Faced with “these unacceptable and unjustifiable figures”, except for the “mismanagement” of the Andalucian government, CCOO demands that the Regional Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs publish its own information on waiting lists, which “have been hidden” for more than a year.
– It also calls for a “real shock plan” based on SAS resources and not on private healthcare, “the real beneficiary of the overflowing lists”, optimising available resources and, among other measures, boosting public healthcare as a whole with the necessary investment and providing primary care with diagnostic and therapeutic resources. The Junta sees the processing of the pardons of the ERE senior officials as “an absolute disgrace”: {Translation}
– The spokesman for the Junta de Andalucía, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, has described the possible processing of pardons by the government for those convicted in the ERE case as an “absolute disgrace” and has demanded “a clear and concise road map” on this matter.
– During the press conference after the Governing Council, the spokesman criticised the fact that “a PSOE politician pardons other PSOE politicians for stealing from all Andalusians” and that it is concluded that “nothing happens for embezzling 680 million euros, which did not belong to the Andalusian PSOE or Pedro Sánchez”.
– In his opinion, the acting president of the government is trying to “play a double game: distract public opinion from the amnesty for Catalan independence supporters and at the same time pardon the convicted members of his party to avoid a revolt within it when the state pardons Puigdemont”. “It is an absolute brazenness before which the Andalusian Executive wonders why we want judges and prosecutors if in the end the sentences are not going to be complied with, unless they are necessary to keep Sánchez in the Government”, he lamented.
– For Fernández-Pacheco, the message sent by the central government is that “if you steal, nothing happens, and if you prevaricate, nothing happens either, as long as you are a member of the PSOE”. “Crimes are or are not crimes depending on whether the offender has enough cards to help Pedro Sánchez”, the Junta spokesman criticised, adding that the Andalusian government “will not tolerate it” and has demanded “a clear and concise roadmap” on what is related to “the biggest corruption case of democracy in Spain”. Spanish airline Air Europa hit by credit card system breach:
– Spanish airline Air Europa said on Tuesday it suffered a cyberattack on its online payment system that exposed some of its customers’ credit card details.
– The airline emailed customers whose credit card details were affected advising them to cancel the credit cards used in transactions with the carrier, and notified the relevant financial institutions, it said in a statement. They have also asked those affected “not to provide personal information, their pin number, name or any other personal data via phone, message or email, even when they identify themselves as their bank”. They added to that, it is important to “do not click on messages to alert you of fraudulent transactions,” and that “to collect any evidence of possible unauthorized use of your card to be able to report it”.
– Experts from Check Point for Spain point out that this attack “shows the lack of protection and demonstrates the poor cybersecurity of the company”, which was already fined in 2021 for the same reason. The 2021 attack affected 489,000 customers.

23andMe DNA Testing Service Confirms Stolen Genetic & Personal Data Is For Sale Online:
– Hardly a week goes by without news of yet another data breach. 23andMe, the genetic testing firm, has confirmed that unknown online criminals have acquired a cornucopia of personal data from the site’s users, and it’s for sale online.
– The data, which is being sold for between $1 and $10 per account, does not contain a full genetic profile. Instead, it lists basic stats like name, sex, and birth year. The database reportedly also contains genetic ancestry information, for example, if someone is “broadly European” or “broadly Asian,” reports Wired. SPACE

The Spanish rocket ‘Miura 1’ is lost in the Atlantic:
– It appears celebrations over the eventual launch of the Miura I space rocket might have been a little premature as the ill-fated shuttle is now lost somewhere at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
– In any case, it was finally third time lucky on Saturday October 7 for the Elche-built rocket, the first one sent into space from Spain. After two previous failed attempts, the Miura 1 microlauncher was successfully sent into the skies from Huelva on a 5-minute journey, while a team of divers anxiously waited in the water to recover the reusable machinery.
– Sadly though, the experts have been unable to haul up the rocket, the remains of which scientists were planning on studying exhaustively for clues on how future space missions might unfold. Full article: https://murciatoday.com/spanish_space_rocket_lost_in_the_atlantic_2258542-a.html

FROM THE “WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY THINKING” DEPARTMENT

Malaga to institute insane new regulations on buskers at the port:
– Following an increase in the number of performances in the Palmeral de las Sorpresas area, the Port Authority put the brakes on artistic acts in the public thoroughfare last summer in a bid to control noise levels. The new rules and regulations have been published on Port Authority’s website and a period of ten days has been opened to apply for authorisation.
– The authorisations will be granted for a period of one year in exchange for a fee of 129.44 euros per year (10.79 euros per month). A deposit of 313.23 euros will also need to be paid, plus the corresponding IVA (Spain’s sales tax). Performers must also have a civil liability and damage insurance policy, and must not hinder pedestrian traffic, use or damage street furniture and obstruct access to the premises and restaurants, the rules state.
– For musical performances, four locations have been established from the entrance to the Palmeral, next to the Plaza de la Marina, to the Alborania building. In each location, there will be two shifts of performances: from 10am to 4pm and from 4pm to 10pm. The noise level of music or instruments must not exceed 73 decibels. Meanwhile, four separate locations for artistic acts that do not involve sound have been set up along the promenade.

PETS

Animal Welfare act- fears that the abandonment of pets will increase & adoptions will fall: {Translation, summary}
– The processing, approval and entry into force of the new Animal Welfare act has been accompanied by a massive controversy.
– The shelters fear that, due to the requirements demanded in the new law to have a pet, the number of abandonments could increase and the number of adoptions could decrease.
– According to Patricia González, a veterinary technical assistant, “… I think it is going to be a scourge in terms of adoption and abandonment. If there are people who have an animal and due to life circumstances they are on a tight budget, how are they also going to pay for insurance, a course…”.
– Another conflictive point highlighted by the shelters is the obligation to take a course in order to be able to keep an animal at home and have an identification microchip. According to Marcelino Laínez, activist and provincial coordinator of Pacma (Animalist Party with the Environment), “the entry into force of the law is scaring people who do not have their ownership or vet papers in order, or because now they must have an identification chip, a course and insurance”. It is feared that adopting a dog now will be seen as expensive and far too much trouble. Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1379247/ley-de-bienestar-animal-las-protectoras-temen-que-los-abandonos-de-mascotas-aumenten/

Editor’s Note- Spanish Culture: Not all animals with a “forever home” have a specific owner, or are typical pets. In rural Spain there are areas, I’ve seen it in the Alpujarra and up near Andorra, where traditionally some dogs and cats belong to the property, and may have done so for several generations. In America these are known as “farm dogs and barn cats”. Whoever occupies the property is expected to provide maintenance for these animals as they provide valuable varmint control and security services. The animals know where their home is, and adapt to new occupants as they come and go. When you move out, you do not remove these animals, the neighbors look after them until new tenants take over. The property owner may, or may not, accept some responsibility for these animals on properties they rent. They will not pay the food or vet bills; the animals provide you a service so you pay. The owners may, or may not, reimburse neighbors for feeding the animals in their vacant properties, and this is where we begin to wander into complex multi-generational Spanish family politics among neighbors- a good place to close this post.

Israeli bombardment of Gaza intensifies and Hamas responds with rocket barrage on Ashkelon:
– The Israeli army on Tuesday intensified the severity of its bombardment of the Gaza Strip and killed two members of Hamas’ political office, in an escalation of the conflict that began Saturday after the Palestinian militant group launched an offensive inside Israel that left at least 900 people dead. Images from the day show entire city blocks reduced to rubble. As they previously warned they would do, at 5:00 p.m. local time the military wing of Hamas launched a barrage of rockets on Ashkelon, a city in southern Israel with 170,000 inhabitants.
– Israel claims to have regained control of all its territory, stopped further infiltration and found 1,500 bodies of Hamas militiamen who crossed into Israel in a surprise operation on Saturday. In Gaza, some 200,000 of the 2.2 million inhabitants have already sought refuge, either because they have lost their homes or because of the intensity of the air and naval bombardment and the expected ground incursion. Many of them are in schools run by UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. Gaza, where the death toll so far stands at 788, has been completely encircled since Monday, after Israel cut off food, electricity, and fuel supplies. Missile attacks from Palestine, Lebanon and now Syria: {Translation}
– The Israeli army on Tuesday reported missile fire from Syria into Israeli territory, several of which have crossed the border and hit open areas, with no casualties so far. “The Israel Defense Forces are responding with artillery and mortar fire to the source of the fire in Syrian territory,” the army said in a brief message posted on the social networking site X, formerly known as Twitter.
– Earlier on Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces reported a “suspected intrusion into the airspace of the Golan Heights and Upper Galilee” and deployed aircraft to monitor the area, but later ruled out such an air incursion. “The suspicion of an airspace intrusion in the Golan Heights and Galilee has been ruled out. There is no fear of a security incident,” the Israeli military said in a message on its social networking site X, formerly known as Twitter.
– The Golan Heights is a territory that Israel seized from Syria during the Six-Day War (1967) and the Yom Kippur War (1973) and effectively annexed in 1981 in a move not recognised by the international community.
