Living in a van or motorhome in Malaga gains ground: “it Is the luxury of the poor”: {Translation, summary}
– More and more people are deciding to live in a van, caravan or motorhome for different reasons, mainly economic. Many do so of their own free will, others out of necessity, but almost all agree that it is a way of life that “hooks you in” and provides freedom: “It is the luxury of the poor”. In cities like Malaga, where the price of housing has soared in recent years, with the average rent being over 1,200 euros per month, these small mobile “homes” have become a housing alternative for people who, despite having an income, cannot or do not want to afford to buy or rent a flat.
– The Costa del Sol has seen a proliferation of esplanades and parking areas that have become small ‘neighbourhoods’ of houses on wheels. Some of these areas are fee-paying and offer shower, toilet, laundry, grey water emptying and security services, while others are mere plots of land with no facilities or security whatsoever. Although these new nomads arrived at this way of life for different reasons, they all agree that they would not change it today. They live on the outskirts of Malaga, on the seafront, and highlight the “good atmosphere” that reigns among the regulars in the area: “We are like a family”.
– What all the vehicular dwellers in the area agree on is that they feel “persecuted” by the local police, who almost daily patrol the car park and prevent caravaners from taking tables, chairs or any other objects out of the vehicles, as this would mean camping. Celebration of the Butchers- Return of the International Day of the Loin in Lard to the Walls of The Segur, a unique event that will be held on 15 October: {Translation, summary}
– The lomo in lard will once again be the undisputed protagonist during the gastronomic day to be held on 15 October at Las Murallas de La Segur. This event, now in its sixth year, is already a highlight on the culinary calendar of the province of Cádiz and beyond, under the name of International Lomo en Manteca Day in Vejer de la Frontera.
– Although Vejer has a rich gastronomy and famous restaurants where all kinds of products are produced, “to hold a gastronomic event in Vejer, we could not choose anything other than our lomo en manteca, a product with which we are identified and with which we pay homage to our traditions, to our slaughtering, to life in the countryside…”, say the promoters. “The promoters of the event are convinced that because of its aroma, colour and flavour, lomo en manteca has become one of the characteristic products of Vejer, a municipality where traditionally “slaughterings have been carried out in the countryside and lard has been used for preserving; and where the frying process to make our lomo en manteca also began”.
– Practically all the butcher’s shops in Vejer are joining the celebration this year, along with the bakeries and, of course, Venta Pinto, a reference point in the area and known for its lomo en manteca for more than a century.
– Lomo en manteca is a unique and versatile product. In fact, its recipe is not patented because each butcher and cook has his own particular way of making it.
– In Vejer de la Frontera, it has always been offered in inns, taverns and taverns, but it has been the butchers who have made it popular, each with their own personal touch, using different marinades, frying it before or after, but all following the same maxim: the meat must come from Iberian pigs, the ingredients must be natural and the preparation must be carried out with great care.

{Editor’s note: manteca = lard, mantequilla = butter, margarine = margarina. In the days before refrigerators were common in Spain, and during the scarcity of wartime, lard was used when butter was unavailable. Lard can be easily stored for longer periods, real butter was a luxury item, or farm treat. However, if you speak to old folks about the WWII era and following years, when rationing was in force, they may bitterly recall resorting to the use of rancid lard as a butter substitute. It was cheap, easily available, and was better than starving. These memories and stories, to some extent, drive the legends behind the popularity of this event.  My source on this is my many conversations with the elders in the mountain villages. This also explains the odd looks one gets if asking for butter in poor Spanish, trying to remember the Spanish word for butter, “don-day es man-tek…tek…tek…”; the confused clerk may point you to the meat counter!}

Football News- Fired Spanish women’s football coach Jorge Vilda is the new Morocco women’s coach: 
– Jorge Vilda will be the new national coach of Morocco. The coach has signed for the next four years, just after the end of the Women’s World Cup.
– The coach has no plans to take any of the technical staff from his experience with the national team with him on his new adventure. According to LD, the contract has been signed exclusively for the exact duration so that after the World Cup Vilda has the option to extend or not that contract.
– The coach was fired on 5 September as head coach of the Spanish women’s team after the controversy that arose following the World Cup in Australia, which crowned the Spanish national team as World Champions after a magnificent championship in the greatest sporting achievement of the national team.
– The Moroccan national team, Vilda’s new destination, had a great World Cup this summer, losing in the round of 16 to France, but managed to win two matches in the tournament for the first time and reached the second round of the tournament for the first time.
– {Vilda, who it is anticipated will enjoy a significant pay raise, as well as many other benefits and levels of respect not provided in Spain, may eventually get an opportunity for his new team, more focused on sport than politics, to avenge the mutiny of the Spanish players who turned on him after he led them to the championship. Imagine Jenni’s Spain playing Vilda coached Morocco in the next World Cup series! That would break viewership records for sure. In the long run, Jenni and the other Spanish players attempt to ruin him may have done Vilda a huge favor.
