SPAIN

Old age in the workplace- older workers flood into the job market due to economic hardship: {Translation}
– Month after month, the government’s unjustified optimism has been demolished by disaggregated employment data. Statistical camouflage has become the permanent ally of the Executive, which already hides nearly 700,000 real unemployed through the figure of the permanent unemployed. But now the problem is bursting through the seams of the purest “social shield”. The latest official unemployment figures conceal a massive demand for employment from the oldest age groups: the over-59s. An unmistakable sign that they are experiencing difficulties in making ends meet.
– The data have been analysed by the research department of the USO trade union. “If we analyse the ages of the people registered as job seekers, we can see that, both if we consider the total number of job seekers and the registered unemployed, the greatest number of them are over 59 years old. 17% and 16% respectively”, say the trade union experts. “We have an ageing unemployed population for whom no alternatives are being offered to facilitate their reintegration into the labour market: the acquisition of new skills and professional qualifications”, they add.
– “More than half – nearly 60% – of the registered unemployed are over 45 years old,” adds the union. And all this with a duration of highly precarious contracts: “In September 2022 the last labour reform was already in full force and therefore comparisons can already be made to see what the application of these legislative changes has entailed” and the “total number of contracts registered during the month of September was 1,392,205, which represents a decrease of 16.2% over the same month of 2022”.
– Moreover, “permanent hiring has decreased in 2023 compared to 2022 by 19.6%”. And with “3.8 million people out of work, it seems to us that the decline in hiring has a lot to do with the low economic growth and the lack of economic activity to support employment. An example of this is the fall in permanent contracts, if we want to get people out of unemployment we need to hire them: without a contract there is no employment”, USO points out.
– “The average duration of contracts continues to decrease, remaining at 48 days, 20% less than in 2021, where it was 61 days”. In addition, “the percentage of permanent contracts made falls two points compared to 2022 and reaches 44.8%. 33% of the total number of contracts made in September (1 in 3) lasted less than one month”. And contracts lasting less than a week “accounted for 19.2% of the total number of contracts in September, and are the most common temporary contracts in percentage terms”.

Spain’s leader mulls acquiescing to the election blackmail, granting amnesty to thousands of Catalan separatists in order to stay in power:
– Barcelona accountant Oriol Calvo ran afoul of the law when he was arrested in 2019 during a mass protest by supporters of Catalonia’s independence from Spain that turned violent {pic}. A court found him guilty of public disorder and of aggressive behavior toward a police officer, offenses he denies.
– Now Calvo hopes his conviction and those of many others will be wiped clean if Spain’s acting prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, follows through and issues a sweeping amnesty for the separatists in exchange for their movement’s political parties helping him form a new government in Madrid.
– Sánchez, who has granted pardons to several leaders of the movement in the past, says that the amnesty will be positive for Spain because it will further reduce tensions inside Catalonia. Yet no one doubts that he is doing it only out of political necessity given how divisive the Catalan independence movement is both inside Catalonia and the rest of Spain.
– A national election in July left no party close to an absolute majority and with Sánchez in need of the support of several smaller parties to stay in power. Those include two pro-secession Catalan parties who led the unsuccessful 2017 breakaway attempt and who now find themselves holding the key votes in Parliament that Sánchez requires.
– Given the chance to play kingmaker, the two separatist parties are using their leverage (“extortion” might be a better choice of word?). They have made an amnesty law as a prerequisite for supporting Sánchez. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/spain-catalonia-amnesty-pedro-sanchez-puigdemont-f6e5bad96d120827349f37ab718ef1ec

ANDALUCIA

Is a plague approaching? Treatments against bedbugs double in Andalusia: {Translation}
– Andalusia has doubled the number of cases of bedbug infestation this year, as confirmed by companies specialising in pest control in the region. The situation is still nowhere near what is happening in Paris, which is suffering from a plague of bedbugs affecting thousands of homes, hotels and shops, but Andalusian professionals are beginning to worry about the proliferation of cases in the region. In fact, in Spain the incidence has increased by 71% between January and September 2023 compared to the same period the previous year.
– “In principle, the doubling of cases in Andalusia is due to the overcrowding of tourism and the increase in the number of tourist flats. That is why the most touristic cities in Andalusia, Seville and Malaga, are where there are more problems. And it seems to be a trend that continues to increase,” says José Antonio Velasco, head of the pest control company Gimasur in Granada.
– September, says this expert, is the month in which cases shoot up due to the return from holidays, as bedbugs are spread mainly by transporting people and infested objects, such as suitcases and clothes. “People come back from holidays and bring bedbugs into their homes,” says Velasco.
– Diego Fernández, head of the company Puntoplaga in Chiclana de la Frontera, recalls that bedbug infestations “have always existed and we don’t stop working against them. This is nothing new, what happens is that it used to be hidden, it seemed to be a taboo word, but now it is no longer”.
– Velasco acknowledges that this pest is the most difficult to eliminate by a pest control company. Normally, an action of this type against other insects lasts one or two hours at most, but in the case of bedbugs it takes up to 15 or 20 hours of work. “Each treatment takes about five hours and there are two people working, and it has to be repeated after 15 days,” he says.
– There is another factor that contributes to amplifying the problem, that the treatment is expensive, “and people with few resources cannot afford it, so the infestation spreads over time”.
– The company Gimasur has shared a series of very important measures to prevent the appearance of bedbugs:
Do not pick up mattresses or furniture from the street next to containers. Be careful also with second-hand furniture.
Take extreme precautions when travelling. Do not place suitcases or luggage on top of the bed.
Inspect the mattress or headboard of the beds where you stay at least the first time before doing so.
– If you detect the presence of bedbugs, never try to treat them with household insecticides, as this can cause the problem to spread and worsen. MALAGA PROVINCE

Destroying the middle class & encouraging squatters- Paying the rent eats up half the salary of tenants in Malaga province, more than in Barcelona!:
– Personal finance experts do not recommend spending more than 30% of the household income on paying the rent or mortgage. But Malaga province, together with the Balearic Islands, has the highest rental expenditure in the country, with 49% of the average income going on paying the rent. That is according to a study carried out by the real estate portal Idealistic, analysing the annual share of the average net household income that goes towards paying rent for a typical two-bedroom home. This rate has skyrocketed in the last year due to the escalation of property rental prices in the province: in September 2022 the average monthly spend on rent was 38% – a rise of 11% in just twelve months.
– If the analysis of mortgage payments is carried out by province, Malaga is in second position in the national ranking with 43% of the average income per household. The first is the Balearic Islands, with 45%, followed by Santa Cruz de Tenerife (34%), Alicante (28%), Las Palmas (25%), Madrid (24%) and Cadiz (23%).
{This is precisely the situation that led to legal squatting (legaal kraakpand) in the Netherlands in the 1960s, until 2010 {pic}. With socialists in control of Spain, it could happen here. If you can give an amnesty to thousands of violent Catalan insurrectionists, why not to peaceful family squatters? -Ed.}

EUROPE

9,75€/kg Chicken! – The regulations of animal welfare in the EU could triple the price of chicken meat: {Translation, summary}
– European animal welfare regulations could have an impact on the costs and profits of producers and on the price of some foodstuffs for consumers. Thus, the costs to egg producers could increase significantly and the price of chicken meat could triple for consumers. This is what Spain’s Coordinadora de Organizaciones de Agricultores y Ganaderos (COAG) denounces.
– “We want to inform the different administrations, both national and European, of the impact of the modification of animal welfare regulations and warn of the economic and supply problems that this could generate. At the same time, we want to show consumers the reality of livestock farming in Spain and the repercussions it would have on food price inflation due to the increase in costs for livestock farmers”, explained Jaume Bernis, head of COAG’s livestock sectors.
– The rabbit, poultry and pig sectors of COAG have analysed the possible consequences that the new “European Regulation on the Meat Production Model” could have, especially with regard to the prohibition of cages in the production. In this respect, the undesired effects are clear. If the stocking density of conventional broilers were to be reduced to a maximum of 11 kg/m², as proposed, the number of birds on farms would be reduced by 72% and the EU would require conventional poultry producers to make significant investments in farms.
– On the other hand, the price of chicken meat could triple for the consumer, since the drop in production as a result of the new regulations will have an impact, an increase of production cost to the detriment of the consumer. Thus, from the COAG point out that while “in these moments, in the linear the price is of 3,25 €/kg whole chicken, it is estimated that it could reach the 9,75 €/kg”.
– Worst of all is that these measures are not based on scientific evidence, but on pure ideology. “Animal welfare does not necessarily improve with these measures”, points out Eloy Ureña, head of the poultry sector at COAG, who adds that by rearing at lower densities “it can be more difficult and costly to maintain temperatures in an adequate manner”, thus affecting the conditions of the animals.
– In the same way, the pig meat market would also be affected, with new expenses of more than half a million euros per farm, and rabbit meat, given that in this sector of limited size, more than 95% of production is carried out in cages, so it is clear that cage prohibition “will have an extraordinary impact on the entire production structure”. In this sense, COAG estimates that “if this regulation is approved, each rabbit farm will lose between 40 and 50% of production”.
– COAG points out that “the possible ban on cages is only a limited part of a much larger equation; the overall impact of the revision of the legislation on animal welfare will be much broader and we still do not know the exact scope determined by the Commission for this ban”.
– In this way we see how, once again, the EU authorities – although the Spanish authorities are also doing the same – are working without taking into account all the consequences that their initiatives could have on the lives of Europeans. Source, Spanish: https://www.libremercado.com/2023-10-19/las-normativas-de-bienestar-animal-de-la-ue-podrian-triplicar-el-precio-de-la-carne-de-pollo-7059788/

OTHER

Why Egypt and other Arab countries are unwilling to take in Palestinian refugees from Gaza:
– As desperate Palestinians in sealed-off Gaza try to find refuge under Israel’s relentless bombardment in retaliation for Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7 attack, some ask why neighboring Egypt and Jordan don’t take them in.
– The two countries, which flank Israel on opposite sides and share borders with Gaza and the occupied West Bank, respectively, have replied with a staunch refusal. Jordan already has a large Palestinian population.
– Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi made his toughest remarks yet on Wednesday, saying the current war was not just aimed at fighting Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, “but also an attempt to push the civilian inhabitants to … migrate to Egypt.” He warned this could wreck peace in the region. El-Sissi also said a mass exodus would risk bringing militants into Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, from where they might launch attacks on Israel, endangering the two countries’ 40-year-old peace treaty.
– Jordan’s King Abdullah II gave a similar message a day earlier, saying, “No refugees in Jordan, no refugees in Egypt.” Full article: https://apnews.com/article/palestinian-jordan-egypt-israel-refugee-502c06d004767d4b64848d878b66bd3d
