Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

Contagious diseases and unprotected agents in the wave of migration in the Canaries: {Translation, summary}
– The Unified Police Union (SUP) yesterday denounced the lack of protection for officers stationed in the Canary Islands in the face of outbreaks of “infectious diseases” detected among immigrants who are arriving en masse on the islands. “We are considering taking legal action in the face of the incompetence of the administration,” said SUP spokesman Jacobo Rodríguez yesterday.
– Representatives of the union in the Canary Islands say that the most serious situation is at the southern police station in Tenerife, where many of those arriving by boat are transferred to El Hierro, the island with the highest number of disembarkations. As of yesterday, there were 150 people crammed into the police station waiting to be handed over to the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration and NGOs after 72 hours. By late afternoon, another 170 were awaiting admission to the complex. Among the former, the authorities have detected cases of “scabies and tuberculosis”, without being able to apply any type of isolation measure, so that both the agents and the rest of the migrants were exposed to contagion.
– The police already denounced the situation three days ago – last week they began to identify the first cases – but they have not received a clear response in the form of material from the higher authorities. “The protocols include personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, tights and goggles,” they say. However, they have not received any of this except for masks and gloves, so the SUP is considering legal action: “We need to be able to establish isolation zones, that would allow us to reduce the risk of propagation”.
– More than 500 immigrants arrived in the Canary Islands yesterday {pic}: two boats to El Hierro with 220 and 127 people, respectively, and another three to Tenerife with around 200. In the average of the waves that have been recorded since September, with figures that resemble the boat crisis between 2006 and 2008. More than 3,000 immigrants have arrived in the archipelago since the acting Interior Minister announced containment measures on the so-called Canary Island route on 16 September, reports Laura Bautista. The government suddenly moved 300 immigrants who had arrived in the Canary Islands to a hotel in Almeria: {Translation}
– Faced with migratory pressure in the Canary Islands, the Spanish government has reportedly decided to transfer some 300 immigrants to the capital of Almería. The group, male immigrants of sub-Saharan origin, would be transported in a plane chartered by the government, according to the newspaper IDEAL, to a hotel in the El Toyo neighbourhood.
– For the moment, the Government Subdelegation in Almería has neither confirmed nor denied this decision. Other sources consulted by ABC corroborate this sudden transfer.
– The migratory pressure in the Canary Islands is quite high, as they are receiving boats every day with about fifty people each. After receiving medical attention and accessing the Temporary Centre for Foreigners (CATE), they are taken to reception centres {pic} and then transferred to other parts of the province. MALAGA PROVINCE

Storms bring relief to the Malaga countryside but the reservoirs remain in a critical situation: {Translation, summary}
– The rainfall is helping to improve the fruit just as the olive season gets underway. At least it will water the fields so that farmers can carry out the next campaign; some sowing has already taken place and it has been possible to start harvesting the olives.
– Although very welcome, the rains have not made a dent in the reservoirs and the water in the reservoirs continues to fall, already below 20% of the capacity of the reservoirs. According to rainfall data from the Hidrosur network, the point in the province with the highest rainfall over the last day has been at the Majada de las Lomas station in Cortes de la Frontera. There, 47.1 litres per square metre were accumulated in 24 hours. At the Los Reales station, in Sierra Bermeja, 26 litres per square metre have been collected, 25 in the Guadario river, in the Majaceite transfer, 22 in Pujerra, almost 20 in La Viñuela and 18 in Benamargosa.
– At present, the seven reservoirs in the province of Malaga hold 121 cubic hectometres of water, 19.7% of their capacity. This is 100 cubic hectometres less than this time last year, when there were 222 accumulated, and two cubic hectometres less than last week.
– The one in the most alarming situation is that of La Viñuela, at 7.8% of its capacity with 12.8 hectometres, followed by the Conde del Guadalhorce reservoir with 11.3 hectometres, which is at 17% of its capacity. On the other hand, in the Casasola reservoir there are almost seven hectometres (30.6%) and in the Limonero reservoir there are just over five hectometres (24%).
– In a better situation is La Concepción with 17.5 hectometres at 30.5%, along with the Guadalhorce which holds 25.3 hectometres and is at 20.2% of its capacity. Meanwhile, the Guadalteba reservoir still contains 42.2 hectometres (27.5%), making it the reservoir with the largest reserves in the province at present. World Rugby announces 24-team World Cup, new Nations League:
– The 2027 World Cup in Australia will expand from the current 20 to 24 teams, split into six first round groups each containing four sides. There will be a round of 16 added and, despite more competing sides, will be shortened from seven weeks to six.
– “This incredible Rugby World Cup 2023 tournament has demonstrated the passion and potential that lies beyond the top 10 or 12 nations,” World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said in a media release on Tuesday.
– The Nations League format has yet to be revealed but will see a 12-team top division comprising sides from the Six Nations and Rugby Championship, and reportedly Japan and Fiji, meeting every two years in the July and November international windows. There will be a second division with a further 12 teams, which will be run by World Rugby.
There will be promotion and relegation between the two, but only from 2030. Full article: https://www.france24.com/en/sport/20231024-world-rugby-announces-expanded-league-biannual-calendar

Meta sued by 42 attorneys general alleging Facebook, Instagram features are addictive and target kids:
– A bipartisan group of 42 attorneys general is suing Meta, alleging that features on its Facebook and Instagram social media platforms are addictive and are aimed at kids and teens, the group announced Tuesday. The support from so many state attorneys general of different political backgrounds indicates a significant legal challenge to Meta’s business.
– Meta designed its Facebook and Instagram products to keep young users on them for longer and repeatedly coming back, the attorneys general allege. According to the federal complaint, Meta did this via the design of its algorithms, copious alerts, notifications and so-called infinite scroll through platform feeds. The company also includes features that the AGs allege negatively impact teens’ mental health through social comparison or promoting body dysmorphia, such as “likes” or photo filters.
– The federal suit also accuses Meta of violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA, by collecting personal data on users under 13 without parental consent. The states are seeking an end to what they see as Meta’s harmful practices, as well as penalties and restitution.
– “While Meta has publicly denied and downplayed these harmful effects, it cannot credibly plead ignorance,” James’ office wrote in a press release. “Meta’s own internal research documents show its awareness that its products harm young users. Indeed, internal studies that Meta commissioned — and kept private until they were leaked by a whistleblower and publicly reported — reveal that Meta has known for years about these serious harms associated with young users’ time spent on its platforms.”

World’s oldest dog ever dies in Portugal, aged 31:
– A 31-year-old dog in Portugal that had been ranked as the world’s oldest dog ever has died, his owner said Monday. The guard dog, called Bobi, died over the weekend in a veterinary hospital, Leonel Costa told The Associated Press. Bobi was a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, a breed of Portuguese dog that has an average life expectancy of some 10 to 14 years.
– Bobi lived on a farm in the village of Conqueiros in Portugal with Costa and four cats. He was born on May 11, 1992, when his owner was just 8 years old. “Bobi eats what we eat,” said Costa. What’s more, Bobi had never been put on a leash.
– Bobi claimed the Guinness World Record from Bluey, an Australian cattle dog, who died in 1939 aged 29 and had held the record for almost a century. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/oldest-dog-portugal-bobi-guinness-world-records-91da19230bafd556fdad28edfa96917f

Cocoa Price Soars to Highest in 44 Years:
– Cocoa for December delivery surged to $3,786 a metric ton in New York, the highest since January 1979. The price exceeded an earlier peak reached in March 2011, when civil war in Ivory Coast resulted in a cocoa export ban. The key chocolate-making ingredient has surged more than 40% this year, the biggest gain among the key US-traded commodities.
– Bean deliveries to ports in Ivory Coast are about 16% behind this season, according to a person familiar with government data. Analysts are expecting a third consecutive deficit for the key chocolate ingredient.
– All of that is happening as a strong El Niño threatens to bring dryness to West Africa, further hurting crops. Demand is also improving, with bean processing in Europe turning out better than expected. Ivory Coast and Brazil are also boosting grindings.
– Previously, supply shortages drove up cocoa prices back in the 1970s, with the commodity reaching a peak of $5,379 a ton in July 1977, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Full article: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/cocoa-price-soars-highest-44-151348597.html

Be very wary of stories claiming Putin was found convulsing from a heart attack:
– The Kremlin has issued a denial after a prominent Russian Telegram account said Putin had a heart attack. The anonymous account, General SVR, regularly pumps out fascinating claims about Putin.
– There’s good reason to be highly skeptical of the account, experts have told Insider. It’s “wild Putin health rumor” time again. On Tuesday, tabloid news outlets breathlessly wrote up that the Kremlin had denied claims about President Vladimir Putin having brushed with death. They originated in a post by the anonymous Russian Telegram account General SVR, an infamous source of juicy but unsubstantiated tales about Putin and his circle.
– The account claimed that Putin was found on Sunday night “convulsively arched” in the throes of a heart attack. The Russian president, it went on to say, has been represented by a body double at recent meetings.
– In a response, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the health rumor a “hoax” and said the talk of body doubles “does not induce anything but a smile” to Kremlin insiders, as state-controlled outlet TASS reported.
