Lost prescription glasses Competa: Prescription eye glasses in a black lightweight case lost on the road in Competa yesterday (Tuesday October 24th) between Bar Lorraine at the entrance to Competa, the Competa car park and from there on to Canillas de Albaida. I was on a bicycle and they dropped out of my cycle bag between 12.45 and 1.15 pm. I’m blind without them. They can only be replaced in Scandinavia. I’m desperate to have them returned. Kittens in need of adoption:
Pinky & Perky are two, 4 month old sisters in need of their ‘forever home’.
Abandoned 2 weeks ago, I’ve been looking after them since. I would love to keep them but as a non resident I cannot offer the stability.
Both are litter trained and good around the house. I have had them both spayed today and all their vaccines and worming taken care of at Animal Friends Vets in Vélez and would pass this paperwork on with them. I can also confirm they both tested negative for FIV and Felv.
I am happy for anyone interested to come to me to see them or if you are sure you want them, am happy to drive them to you.

SPANISH ELECTIONS

A majority would prefer to repeat elections rather than accept the pro-independence movement, PP support grows: {Translation}
– A majority of 61.2% prefer to repeat the general elections on 14 January rather than agree with the Catalan pro-independence supporters on amnesty and a possible referendum. This is what the DYM barometer for the month of October indicates. In fact, a notable 39% of socialist voters prefer this option.
– The results of the poll indicate an improvement of the PP and Vox bloc, which in some probabilities of the brackets could obtain an absolute majority of 176 seats. The total is between 172 and 180 deputies. The PP is the party that has risen the most since the general elections of 23 July: 1.8 percentage points. And that, together with the fact that Vox is not moving, makes the right-wing bloc the clear majority.
– The PSOE also rises in voting intentions, although slightly less than the PP, by 0.9. Thus, the socialists would obtain 122 to 126 deputies. Sumar, however, has lost two points since 23 July, leaving it with a range of 23 to 27 seats. This is what is preventing the left-wing bloc from growing.
– The PSOE’s increase in votes is entirely due to the transfer of voters from Sumar, while the PP’s increase is fuelled by socialist voters.
– A majority rejects the agreements on which the support of the Catalan pro-independence supporters is likely to be based. 67.4% disagree with the amnesty and 61% with a possible referendum, hence 57.6% reject an investiture of Pedro Sánchez if it is based on these points.
– The most highly rated leader is the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, with 4.3. Pedro Sánchez has a 3.8. However, there are still more respondents who prefer Sánchez to Feijóo as President of the Government, with a ratio of 40.1 to 38.8.
– With these figures, similar to those of September’s barometer, a call for elections on 14 January would cast some doubt on whether it would solve the problems of forming a government. It is more likely that PP and Vox would reach 176 seats, but there is also room for them to fall short of the required number of deputies. AXARQUIA

Anger as some residents of Axarquía village La Viñuela are hit with water bills of more than 70,000 euros:
– Residents of La Viñuela in the Axarquía are threatening to take action if the town hall does not find answers to why some people have been hit with water bills exceeding 70,000 euros. Around 120 property owners, including Spanish and foreign residents, have been receiving excessively high bills without any explanation from the town hall.
– G.H. has a holiday home in La Viñuela and has received a bill for over 73,000 “It is rented out over the summer and we visit it ourselves for about six to eight weeks each year. Ours is 73,640.76 euros, saying we used over a million and a half litres in 90 days,” she told SUR in English.
– M.S. also has a property in La Viñuela and has received bills of €25,000 for the third quarter of 2022, which she says arrived one year later. She has also had a bill for 14,500 euros for the second quarter of 2023. However, she said, “Our bills in quarter one and quarter two last year were 12 and 40 euros” respectively.
– Councillor for foreign citizens, Amber Crookshank, told SUR in English that all the water meters are being sent off for testing to ensure [they are] calibrated correctly”, but said “there doesn’t seem to be any reason other than that’s the amount of water that’s been used” She added, “I don’t understand it and it’s something I’m trying to get answers for” and that there is “lots of speculation is going on but nothing is certain”. TORROX

206 sub-Saharan migrants transferred from the Canary Islands to El Morche hotel: {Translation, summary}
– In a context of acute humanitarian crisis in the Canary Islands, a group of 206 migrants of sub-Saharan origin, all men, were transferred from the Canary Islands refugee holding facility to a hotel in Torrox called Hotel Urban Dream in El Morche Tuesday (24/10) evening. The confirmation of this movement of people comes amid an alarming increase in migrant arrivals on the Canary coasts in recent days, SER reports. More than 1,600 individuals are risking their lives in precarious boats in search of a better life in Europe.
– It is expected that they will remain in the province of Malaga for at least a month, while their cases are managed and the necessary support is provided. (Other sources say it will be thru December. -Ed.)
– The mayor of Torrox, Óscar Medina, has denounced the Spanish government due to the lack of contact with the town hall regarding the arrival of migrants in the municipality. According to the mayor’s statements, he only found out about the situation a day before and regrets that there was no prior communication to allow effective coordination between the local authorities and the central government.
– In their efforts to ensure adequate care for the migrants, the provincial coordinator of the Red Cross mentions that they have held a meeting with the Torrox Town Hall and have informed the Government Delegation. (Now the Red Cross tells the gov’t what to do? This deal with the El Morche hotel must have been planned in advance. How in the world did the Red Cross think they could do this without prior Municipal and Provincial approval? Is this some kind of EU bully tactic, or perhaps a Sanchez backroom deal to gain the favor of his EU masters? And what about TB? Have these fresh-off-the-boat migrants even been tested for communicable diseases, because they are already wandering the paseo and streets of El Morche unescorted. I feel sorry for these young men, but there are established protocols that have been totally ignored here, putting our community, with many particularly vulnerable and older residents, at risk. In Senegal, where most of these new arrivals come from, TB, Hepatitis A, Meningococcal meningitis, Hantavirus and even Polio are serious communicable health threats! Ref: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/senegal . The mayor needs to address this issue immediately. -Ed.).
-The Red Cross objective, they say, is to emphasise that this type of centre does not cause any disturbance to the environment, as they are part of the itinerary of the migratory processes of these people, and are intended to provide them with dignified care. (Who approved this “itinerary” of depositing hundreds of migrants into small towns unannounced? Evidently the Mayor was not consulted! -Ed.)
– Óscar Medina is grateful for the work of the Red Cross and the health services of the Junta de Andalucía, who are already working to guarantee a safe stay for the immigrants in the municipality. In addition, the mayor underlines the willingness of the Town Hall to collaborate in the care of these individuals.
– The mayor of Torrox, however, expresses his concern about the lack of information on the long-term plan, such as the length of stay of the migrants and whether more people are expected to arrive. So far, information received suggests that the migrants will be able to stay in a local hotel until the end of December, but Medina regrets the lack of specific details.

Health orders the withdrawal of this cosmetic due to the presence of a dangerous bacterium: {Translation}

SCIENCE

Low-calorie sugar breakthrough could make allulose a household name:
– One of the biggest barriers to finding a healthy, affordable alternative to table sugar, or sucrose, is being able to make it. One such substitute, allulose, is around 70% as sweet as sucrose, but contains just 10% of the calories and has even been shown to improve blood glucose levels and help in weight loss in people with type 2 diabetes. Yet, notoriously low, poor-quality yields in current production methods have hindered its growth.
– Now, scientists at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) have made a “significant breakthrough” in allulose production, with a method that offers both a high-quality yield and viable scalability, setting it up as a viable and healthier sugar substitute. It also rewrites the book on how allulose is currently sourced, which could swiftly advance its commercial production.
