Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

Rail unions call four-day strike at Renfe and Adif against the transfer of Rodalies (rail lines) to Catalonia: {Translation, summary}
– The unions are revolting against the investiture pact agreement between the PSOE and ERC that includes the transfer of the Catalan commuter rail service Rodalies to the Generalitat. The works councils of Renfe and Adif have decided to call four days of strike after meeting this Tuesday with both public companies. The stoppages are scheduled for 24 and 30 November and 1 and 4 December.
– Unions complain about the lack of detail in the pact, which does not address how it will affect Renfe and Adif employees. Sánchez’s agreement with the Republicans includes the transfer of the track, machinery, stations and operations to Rodalies. A new public company will be created for its management, which the state and the Generalitat will control on a parity basis, although with a majority of the latter, which will also have the power to appoint the president. This is all that the workers know so far. Source, Spanish: https://www.abc.es/economia/sindicatos-convocan-cuatro-dias-huelga-renfe-adif-20231107121300-nt.html

40.91% of Andalusian households do not make ends meet: {Translation, summary}
– The domestic economy in Andalucia is going through a period of uncertainty, with a recent report by idealo.es revealing that a worrying 40.91% of families in the region do not make ends meet. This data, which is part of a broader analysis of the savings and consumption of Spaniards, highlights the economic difficulties faced by many households in the context of the current cost of living crisis. The report reveals that 11.9% of Spanish households are spending from their savings to cover their basic needs and 26.8% are reaching the end of the month with nothing remaining to save.
-The report also notes that two-thirds of families (66.4%) claim that their savings levels have decreased since the cost of living crisis that began in 2021. Only a little more than 6% of those surveyed claim to have experienced an improvement in their personal finances since the beginning of the crisis. ‘Little summer’ of San Martín set to send temperatures soaring on the Costa del Sol this weekend:
– It is called ‘Veranillo de San Martín’ in Spanish, and it is a brief escape from the cold in the middle of autumn when abnormally warm weather usually coincides with the celebration of Saint Martin’s Day on 11 November. Hence its name, which is already well established among followers of meteorology. And this year it will fall over the coming weekend.
– State weather agency Aemet is forecasting highs of up to 28C in some areas of Malaga province – especially on Sunday. Photo: Statue of Saint Martin cutting his cloak in two, Wikipedia. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/the-little-summer-san-martin-set-send-20231107143857-nt.html

King Charles III said in his speech: “My Ministers will bring forward a bill to reform the housing market by making it cheaper and easier for leaseholders to purchase their freehold and tackling the exploitation of millions of homeowners through punitive service charges.” The King then said: “Renters will benefit from stronger security of tenure and better value, while landlords will benefit from reforms to provide certainty that they can regain their properties when needed.” Full article: https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/uk-news/new-property-laws-read-out-28060242

United Kingdom and Ireland on alert as hundreds of tourists return from Spain infected by an intestinal parasite: {Translation, summary}
– The United Kingdom and Ireland have been alerting their populations for weeks about the strong and “unusual” increase in those infected by an intestinal parasite in tourists returning from Spain. In total, more than 600 cases of Cryptoporidiosis, a contagious stomach virus caused by the ‘Cryptosporidium’ protozoan and which is commonly contracted in hotel pools or water parks.
– So far this year, up to 2,940 cases of cryptosporidiosis have already been recorded – 121 of the infected people have been admitted to hospitals – British, Welsh and Irish (North and South), according to the National Epidemiology Center of Spain. This is a considerably high number and without precedents, taking into account that last year there were not even a thousand cases (there were only 805).
– According to a preliminary report in the scientific journal ‘Eurosurveillance’, “a continuous and unusual excess in the disease” and the majority of cases “are related to international travel, especially to Spain and other Mediterranean countries.” Full article:
– The UK Government, meanwhile, has urged all travellers to Spain, particularly those heading to Salou (Tarragona) – according to the latest report from the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) – to take extra precautions to prevent the spread of the virus: “As more and more tourists return from abroad with gastrointestinal illnesses, the HSE recommends that people take extra hygiene precautions. Over the last month there have been reports of elevated levels of cryptosporidiosis in tourists returning home from parts of Spain, particularly Salou in Catalonia,” the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said in a statement. The pill that could extend your dog’s life is here- when can it be bought?: {Translation}
– The medicines developed by the company Loyal are LOY-001 and LOY-002. LOY-001 is intended to extend the life and improve the health of large-breed dogs, which tend to live fewer years compared to smaller-breed dogs.
Meanwhile, LOY-002 would be designed to provide healthy ageing in dogs that have already reached a certain age, regardless of their breed and size. In addition, both products include a compound designed to slow the onset of dementia and kidney failure in dogs.
– Céline Halioua, founder of Loyal, points out that dogs not only have a short enough life expectancy to make them easier to research, but also, like humans, develop age-related diseases. “Dogs are arguably the best model of human ageing. We have co-evolved with them and they share our environment. They also develop age-related diseases over time. If we can do this for dogs, people will want it too,” he says.
– LOY-001 will be tested this year and could go on sale in 2026. LOY-002 will be tested in 2023 and could be available in 2024. Source, Spanish: https://okdiario.com/mascotas/llega-pildora-que-podria-alargar-vida-tu-perro-cuando-podra-comprar-11866671
SCIENCE
New evidence strongly suggests Indonesia’s Gunung Padang is oldest known pyramid:
– A team of archaeologists, geophysicists, geologists, and paleontologists affiliated with multiple institutions in Indonesia has found evidence showing that Gunung Padang is the oldest known pyramid in the world.
– In studying all their data, the research team found what they describe as clear evidence showing that the Gunung Padang was made mostly by human hands. The also found evidence showing that the structure was built in stages, thousands of years apart. And, they found that the older parts of the structure were made sometime between 25,000 and 14,000 years ago, making it the oldest known pyramid in the world today.
– More specifically, the researchers found evidence of several efforts that together over time, added up to a completed structure. The first consisted of sculpted lava—where builders had carved shapes onto the top of a small, dead volcano. Then, several thousand years later, sometime between 7900 to 6100 BCE, another group added a layer of bricks and rock columns. Some unknown time later, another group added a dirt layer to part of the hill, covering some of the earlier work. Then sometime between 2000 and 1100 BCE yet another group added more top soil, stone terracing, and other elements. SPACE
Euclid’s first images- the dazzling edge of darkness:
– ESA’s Euclid space mission reveals its first full-colour images of the cosmos. Never before has a telescope been able to create such razor-sharp astronomical images across such a large patch of the sky, and looking so far into the distant Universe. These five images illustrate Euclid’s full potential; they show that the telescope is ready to create the most extensive 3D map of the Universe yet, to uncover some of its hidden secrets.
– Euclid, our dark Universe detective, has a difficult task: to investigate how dark matter and dark energy have made our Universe look like it does today. 95% of our cosmos appears to be made of these mysterious ‘dark’ entities. But we don’t understand what they are because their presence causes only very subtle changes in the appearance and motions of the things we can see.
– To reveal the ‘dark’ influence on the visible Universe, over the next six years Euclid will observe the shapes, distances and motions of billions of galaxies out to 10 billion light-years. By doing this, it will create the largest cosmic 3D map ever made. Photos: ESA. Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel plans to have ‘overall security responsibility’ in Gaza after war:
– It has been a month since the surprise Hamas terrorist attack that Israel says killed 1,400 people and kidnapped 240 others, who are still held hostage in the Gaza Strip. More than 1.5 million people have been displaced in Gaza, and health officials there say more than 10,000 have been killed as Israel bombards the Palestinian enclave from the air and assaults it on the ground.
– Israel will have “overall security responsibility” for Gaza for “an indefinite period” after the war ends, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said. His comments shed some light on what Israel may plan for after the fighting, as its troops split Gaza in two and prepare for what could be a bloody battle in its main city. Netanyahu has dismissed growing calls for a cease-fire but said his country was open to “little pauses” in the fighting.
