SPANISH ELECTIONS

EU Has “Serious Concerns” Regarding The Legality Of The Sanchez Amnesty Plan And Delays In Responses To Earlier Information Requests Regarding The Spanish Court System: {Translation, summary}
– The European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, has asked the acting government for “detailed” information on the amnesty law being negotiated by the PSOE and Junts to enable the investiture of Pedro Sánchez and about which “serious concerns are expressed”. “I would be grateful if you could provide me with more detailed information, in particular on the personal, material and temporal scope of this planned law,” Reynders wrote in a letter addressed to the acting ministers of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, and Justice, Pilar Llop. Letter is below.
– “The EU cannot look the other way when the principles it claims to defend are trampled upon. The government in office is erasing justice with the stroke of a pen by amnestying convicted, prosecuted and fugitives”, said the PP spokesperson in the European Parliament, Dolors Montserrat, in a message sent to the EU executive on Tuesday. “The Spanish government in office, after pardoning those convicted, lowering the crime of embezzlement and abolishing sedition as a political payment, announces that it will give a massive political amnesty that flagrantly violates the rule of law and will cover 10-year crimes, including the embezzlement of public funds, against independent judicial decisions, in exchange for votes for the investiture”, summarised the MEP, who also reminds the EU Commission that the measure covers “terrorist organisations”, she says, such as the CDR or Tsunami Democratic. AXARQUÍA

Poop Police Seeks Informers- Axarquía village cracks down on dog mess problem with confidential hotline:
– Benamargosa town hall in the Axarquía, on the eastern side of Malaga province, has announced that it is getting tough on pet owners who fail to pick up their dog’s mess. It has published a notice, signed by the mayor, Salvador Arcas, saying that the council will impose a fine of up to 500 euros on owners who don’t comply.
– The town hall has also set up two phone numbers for residents to put in “anonymous complaints” via WhatsApp to “send us photos or videos showing these dogs or their owners so we can begin the process of fining them” the notice reads. (Just wait until kids start sending in deep-fake photos of the mayor, with his dogs leaving poo on the Ayuntamiento lawn. -Ed.)
– The town hall has also launched a public awareness campaign with the message ‘You forgot something’, reminding residents that “it is mandatory to pick up your dog’s mess and pour water with vinegar or a similar product where your animal urinates”. The town hall is giving away dog poo bags in a plastic dog bone shaped holder and reminds residents that they must walk their pets “in a civilised way”. MALAGA CITY

Home Invasions Increase In Puerto de la Torre, Resident Patrols Ineffective Deterrent: {Translation, summary}
– Neither the patrols that the residents themselves continue to organise every night {pic} to scare off burglars nor the police presence have been enough to put an end to the burglaries in the Urbanización Puertosol, in the Puerto de la Torre neighbourhood of Málaga. The homeowners’ association has reported new burglaries that took place this past weekend.
– In the words of the residents’ spokesperson, “the burglars, who used to wear balaclavas, now walk around with their faces uncovered and with total impunity”. Residents claim that in one month they have suffered eight break-ins at their homes and three completed robberies. Meanwhile, a group of neighbours continue to go out into the streets every night with the intention of deterring those responsible for the robberies. They are aware of the risk they run by confronting thieves, but they feel “forced” to do so by the fear that the homeowners, many of them elderly, have of violent thieves accessing their homes. They fear returning to their homes and encountering, as has already happened to some, an intruder inside.
– The community has private security, but the guards have no weapons “nor can they arrest any burglars”, despite catching them breaking into the properties.
– In the words of one of the neighbours, the perpetrators of these assaults, “who are the same ones who have been acting since the summer”, have all the houses in the area “under control”. “We go out and in less than 5 minutes they are inside”, he complains. In one of the latest cases, which occurred last week, it took them just 25 minutes to “empty” a house. Spain’s Health Services help you pay for a new treatment to quit smoking- how much does it cost, who can take it and when will it be available: {Translation, summary}
– Recigarum, a drug that broadens the range of options for quitting smoking and is now available in Spanish pharmacies. However, a doctor’s prescription is required.
– Its main active ingredient is cytisine, a plant alkaloid extracted from trees – the same as that used in Todacitan – and was used during the Second World War as a substitute for tobacco, as well as to treat illnesses such as constipation, insomnia and migraines.
– The cost of ‘Recigarum’ is 111 euros, exactly the same as the cost of Todacitan, the other smoking cessation drug in Spain. Of the total price, the patient contributes between 40% and 60%, depending on his or her income. The treatment is only financed once, i.e. there is only one quit attempt per year, for smokers with a minimum consumption of ten cigarettes per day and a high level of physical dependence.
– The treatment consists of taking one hundred 1.5 mg tablets for 25 days. First, you start with six tablets a day – every two hours – and end up taking only one. The packaging of this medicine is the only one that includes a blister pack with a visual schedule to help adherence.

TECH

The Great Digital Transition- the new learning problems after leaving manual writing: {Translation, summary}
– Keyboards, word processors, ChatGPT, voice assistants…In an era dominated by electronic devices and digital keyboards, handwriting is experiencing a marked decline, raising concerns about learning challenges affecting students of all ages. Writing and dictating on electronic devices and keyboards has become the norm, and this shift has raised concerns about students’ learning disabilities and cognitive development. Studies and experts have documented the negative consequences of this digital transition on education and cognitive development.
– Renowned author and education expert Daniel Willingham, in his book “Why Don’t Students Like School?”, argues that handwriting is an integral part of human cognition and learning. He says handwriting stimulates memory and comprehension, as it involves multiple brain processes. His research suggests that handwriting encourages the formation of stronger connections in the brain and improves information retention.
– A study conducted by Princeton University, published in the journal Psychological Science, found that students who took notes by hand during lectures performed better on comprehension tests compared to those who used electronic devices. Handwriting encouraged greater concentration and active participation in note-taking.
– To address these challenges, some educators advocate reintroducing handwriting into the curriculum, encouraging practice and handwritten note-taking. They also stress the importance of balancing the use of technology with the preservation of handwriting as a fundamental skill. SCAMS

Arrested for fraud and violent burglaries of elderly people’s homes by pretending to be pregnant: {Translation, summary}
– The Mossos arrested on 1 November in the Baix Penedès (Tarragona) a woman accused of eight thefts in flats, a violent robbery, two frauds and two robberies with force in homes of the elderly, in which she pretended to be pregnant and need to drink water or use the bathroom to access the interior. According to the Mossos d’Esquadra on Wednesday, the 40-year-old woman, who has about 40 previous convictions, had a prison warrant in force on the day of her arrest, three outstanding arrest warrants and a hundred court summonses for similar offences.
– The scam: Once the victim was chosen, she would follow a victim to their home to collect information about them, such as their name, and thus initiate a minimal relationship of trust and closeness. Then, once she had gained the trust of victims, she approached them at their home and, with the excuse of being pregnant, asked them if she could come in to drink a glass of water or use the bathroom.
Once inside the house, and taking advantage of the victims’ limitations, she would steal money and jewellery. Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1430096/detenida-por-estafa-y-robos-violentos-en-domicilios-de-ancianos-simulando-estar-embarazada/
