Well done & thanks again! The holiday season is returning. So now I must begin the DigameXtra 2023 Holiday Donation Drive. I can only produce DigameXtra with the financial support of my readers. So please consider the value you have received this passing year and show your support with a donation. This year’s goal is to receive a donation from 3% of subscribers. If just 3 of each 100 subscribers make a donation the goal will be attained! The 3% group finances DigameXtra for the 97% group that don’t donate. Which group will you belong to? Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Just like your morning coffee,

Coffee Tour – Malaga: Sunday, Nov. 19, from 5:00 p.m
– 2 hours, starting from the Plaza de la Constitución next to the Génova fountain, you travel through the history of Málaga and its coffee with the guide Jorge Jiménez Reyes, graduate in History from the UMA and Official Tourism Guide. A reservation is required for this, either by email, to info@cultopia.es, or by phone, to 692 717 612. The coffee route has a price of 10 euros per person, 5 if they are under 12 years old.
– The origin of the peculiar way of ordering coffee in Malaga has been told on many occasions and is related to the shortage of coffee at various stages of the 20th century. At the now defunct Café Central, initially, customers were asked to indicate the right amount for their taste, thus allowing coffee to be served without wasting coffee. However, this measure was not very efficient in terms of speed. Therefore, the owners of the establishment created a table with the above-mentioned division, to which the customers quickly got used to.
– Malaga and its peculiar way of ordering coffee have a history behind them that generates a lot of curiosity among foreigners. As Malagueños we are intrinsically aware of the differences between the mitad, the nube or the sombra, but those who come from outside get lost among so many different types. For these curious people there is a route through the most important streets of Malaga that had a reason and reason for the particular way of asking for coffee that we have. Photo: Marilu Baez. Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?

Inflammation – A Psychological Thriller:
– Set in London, Brighton, Oxford, and Málaga; this fast paced novel follows Adam, a Psychologist, as he struggles to cope with life after the brutal murder of his truest love, Lorelei, at the hands of her abusive ex-partner. In the midst of his grief, and the guilt from his sense of having failed her; he lives on countdown, awaiting the release of the perpetrator. Furious with a criminal justice system that by its very nature only ever acts after the event, and increasingly feeling the need to do something for the cause in the meantime; the obsessive urge to intervene using his psychological skills, overpowers him. Will he even make it to the release date, or will he already have gone too far?
– I wrote this novel in and around Málaga province; in Torrox and Nerja particularly. It is a psychological/suspense/crime thriller, and would certainly be rated 18+ in places. It is available on Amazon in paperback and ebook in various countries. The links for the UK and Spain are below, and it is best to order it from where you currently are, and/or to where you would like it delivered. I very much hope you enjoy it (please leave a nice amazon review if so); and a big heartfelt thank you to anyone who orders it, and in doing so, is supporting an independent author.

SPAIN

Brussels takes Spain before European Justice for failing to comply with the family conciliation directive: {Translation, summary}
– After several ultimatums, the European Commission has finally decided to take Spain before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) by breaching its regulations on family conciliation.
– Spain had until August 2022 to communicate the full transposition of the Directive on the reconciliation of family and professional life. This includes a series of leaves – paternity, parental, for caregivers or flexible work formulas – that the 27 members had to recognize in their territories after having ratified the regulations linked to the European Care Strategy four years ago. SPANISH ELECTIONS

Spain’s Pedro Sánchez reelected prime minister despite controversy over amnesty for separatists:
– Spain’s Pedro Sánchez was reelected as prime minister by the nation’s parliament on Thursday, when he leveraged a controversial amnesty deal to get the critical support from Catalan separatists to stay in power. Sánchez, Spain’s Socialist leader since 2018, was backed by 179 lawmakers in the 350-seat lower house of parliament to form a new minority leftist coalition government. Only right-wing opposition deputies voted against him.
– The vote came after nearly two days of debate among party leaders that centered almost entirely on an amnesty deal for Catalonia’s separatists that Sánchez agreed to in return for vital support to unlock another four-year term.
Sánchez won the vote after clinching the support of six smaller parties – including two Catalan separatist parties that command 14 seats – in recent weeks, allowing his Socialists to once again team up with the left-wing Sumar (Joining Forces) party in government.
– It remains to be seen if Sánchez can maintain enough support to exhaust his mandate that can run until 2027 given that some of his backers are parties that want to break Catalonia, or the Basque Country, away from Spain.
Spain’s inconclusive national elections on July 23 left a highly fractured parliament. The center-right Popular Party received the most votes in the elections but failed to get enough support to form a government because of its alliances with the far-right Vox party, which finished third.
– The amnesty deal would clean the slate for hundreds of Catalan separatists in legal trouble following the northeast region’s illegal 2017 secession bid that sparked Spain’s biggest crisis in decades. That includes benefiting former Catalan regional president Carles Puigdemont, who is a fugitive from Spanish law and considered public enemy No. 1 by many Spaniards.
– Despite lingering disagreements, the two Catalan parties as well as two Basque ones said they would back Sánchez on Thursday but let him know that he must fulfill the economic and political deals reached with each of them.
– The agreements with the Catalan parties include opening talks on the possibility of holding an authorized referendum for independence for the wealthy northeast region, but within the legal framework of Spain’s Constitution. Sánchez has repeatedly said that he would not permit a vote that could break up Spain (Sanchez said that in 2017. He’s changed his tune to buy the election. -Ed.)
– Analyst Oriol Bartomeus, professor of political science of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, said that since Sánchez has made it over the hurdle of forming a government he has a chance, albeit small, to keep it afloat for the full term. “There is a possibility that it can last because it is very difficult, almost impossible, to win a no-confidence vote against this government,” Bartomeus said, pointing to the only successful no-confidence vote in 2018 when Sánchez replaced his conservative predecessor.
“That said, this government will be very unstable because (the two Catalan parties) that have supported its formation have done so with strings attached.”
– The amnesty proposal has been heavily criticized by Spain’s judiciary, which considers it a violation of the separation of powers. The European Union is reviewing it.
– The proposal sparked street protests backed by the Popular Party and Vox, which accuse Sánchez of betraying the nation just to stay in power. Protests outside the Socialist party’s headquarters in Madrid turned ugly last week and again on Wednesday night.
– The speaker of the house will now convey the result to King Felipe VI. Once published in the State Gazette, Sánchez will be sworn as the new prime minister before the king, most likely on Friday.
– Sánchez received congratulations from European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who said on X, formerly Twitter, that she looked “forward to working together” and to “bring forward the European project.” Photos: Javier Soriano. Quote caught on mic, Feijóo, when shaking Sánchez’s hand: “This is a mistake and you are responsible”

ANDALUCÍA

Unfinished Business- Andalucia could expect from Sánchez everything he has given Catalonia, the president of Andalucia demands 17,800 million euros, will independence for Andalucia be next? Sanchez has opened the Pandora’s Box!:
– Pedro Sánchez’s latest agreements in Catalonia and the Basque Country have put the government in the spotlight of all the regional presidents, who have already begun to demand equal treatment.
– Andalusia is one of the autonomous communities that has most criticised the central government over the distribution of public funds and the fulfilment of commitments made. Some of the pending issues that Andalusia could demand from the government are:
*17.8 BILLION EUROS*
– Juanma Moreno {pic}, taking advantage of the latest PSOE agreements to achieve the investiture, has demanded “17,800 million euros” from Sánchez as well as “a compensation fund” that would allow the community to “recover the 15,000 million that it has lost with the current system of regional funding”, according to Juanma Moreno.
– Sources from the Junta have clarified after these comments by the Andalusian president, to explain where the calculation of the 17,800 million that Moreno has demanded from Sánchez for Andalusia comes from, that, under the agreement reached between the PSOE and ERC, “in total” there are “16. 300 million” that are “condoned” to Catalonia in the framework of the FLA, and that amount “is equivalent to a condonation of 2,099 euros per inhabitant, according to the latest census data of Catalonia published in the National Institute of Statistics” (INE).
– “From this comes the 17,800 million euros that Andalusia is claiming, according to the latest census data” of this autonomous community published by the INE, explained the same sources, who also confirmed that the Junta maintains the demand for a “transitional compensation fund to recover the 15,000 million euros by which the current system has harmed Andalusia compared to the average for Spain since 2009”.
*REFORM OF THE REGIONAL FUNDING SYSTEM*
– Last September, the president of the Junta de Andalucía and the PP-A, Juanma Moreno, warned the acting Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, of street demonstrations if there was no change in the funding model that would guarantee equality between the autonomous communities and stop being “clearly detrimental to Andalusia”.
– A request that has been repeated on several occasions, demanding a fairer and more equitable distribution of resources among the autonomous communities, taking into account criteria such as population, income level, the cost of public services or geographical dispersion.
– “We have been asking for this in a polite, correct way for many years now, but the patience of the Andalusians is beginning to run out,” Moreno told Sánchez at the time, warning him that, “sooner rather than later, if you do not solve our problems, if you do not treat us on an equal footing with other territories in Spain, we will take to the streets to demand what is ours, what is ours, what we need to improve health, education and employment in Andalusia”.
*IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURES: THE MEDITERRANEAN CORRIDOR*
– After 2 decades of delays in the works, #QuieroCorredor has managed to make the Mediterranean Corridor a priority in the political agenda of the country. They are calling for a double international gauge railway platform that runs along the Mediterranean coastline from the French border to Algeciras, linking all Mediterranean cities with each other, with the rest of the country and with Europe.
– As “Andalusia cannot let the train of the trans-European corridors pass”, the Andalusian Government has always urged the central government to speed up the execution of the sections of the Mediterranean Corridor and Central Branch that cross our region and to improve the projects to avoid possible “bottlenecks” in the transport of passengers and goods through our region.
*DEFENDING THE INTERESTS OF ANDALUSIAN FARMERS AND STOCKBREEDERS*
– On 9 September, Andalusian agricultural and livestock organisations such as Asaja, COAG and Agri-food Cooperatives expressed their rejection of the EU’s final approval of the CAP Strategic Plan and said they felt “sold out” by the Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas. In a joint statement, the organisations criticised Planas for expressing his satisfaction with this approval, considering that the minister has achieved what he has always “inexplicably” pursued, which is the transfer of aid from this region to other autonomous communities. AXARQUÍA

Asaja denounces a wave of thefts in avocado farms in Axarquía: {Translation, summary}
– “We have received numerous communications from farmers warning of these thefts. This stolen fruit is sold at below market prices, which leads to unfair competition that causes serious damage to the whole sector. The problem is exacerbated because the thefts are also focused on the Hass variety, which will not reach optimum ripeness until December and this fruit is not commercially valid, causing consumer rejection”, the agricultural employers’ association has stated, while “not only” they have demanded “greater control at the field level, but it is also strictly necessary to monitor subsequent illegal sales on roads, at markets and in establishments”, they have added. MALAGA PROVINCE

Radical change in weather after a weekend of record temperatures: {Translation, summary}
– From one extreme to the other in a matter of days. The weather will take a radical turn and become more in keeping with the calendar dates we are in, but first the summer of San Martin will leave record temperatures over the weekend. In fact, thermometers are expected to register between five and ten degrees above normal at this time in large parts of the country. The summer of San Martin that we are living is the warmest of those recorded since 1950, as explained by Aemet- for example, that in Malaga last Tuesday it reached 32 degrees.
– However, from Monday onwards, temperatures are expected to drop and a more autumnal atmosphere will begin in some parts of the east and south of the Peninsula, where the weather will be “colder than normal”, although there will still not be much rain except in the far north and the Balearic Islands. Fog banks will return, mainly in low areas of the peninsular interior as well as the Balearic coasts and the south of Andalucia. MALAGA CITY

Málaga City Council prohibits watering gardens and golf courses with drinking water and closes fountains and footbaths: {Translation, summary}
– The reservoirs have not recovered the usual levels for this time of year, which has led Malaga to activate new saving measures on Thursday.
-The decree establishes a ban on the use of drinking water for street washing, filling private swimming pools, watering gardens, public or private parks and golf courses, as well as washing cars outside authorised establishments, and in ornamental fountains without a closed water circuit, as well as public showers and drinking fountains.
– It warns that the Local Police may carry out surveillance and control tasks to ensure compliance with the provisions of this by-law and that while it is in force, these uses will constitute an infraction, with penalties of up to 6,010.12 euros in the case of minor infractions. A criminal group that robbed industrial warehouses with alarm inhibitors dismantled in Nerja: {Translation, summary}
– The main post of the Guardia Civil in Nerja has carried out the so-called operation ‘Estaner’, where three individuals have been arrested and four others investigated, all of them members of a criminal organisation allegedly dedicated to the theft in commercial establishments and industrial warehouses in the area.
– The investigation began in the summer of 2022 following the robbery of a central establishment in the easternmost coastal town of the province. This robbery was followed by four more committed in a short period of time in industrial warehouses in the same town of Axarquia, as reported from the Armed Institute in a statement.
– To commit these crimes, the criminal group used alarm inhibitors and tools to open doors without forcing locks. Similarly, they used false number plates on the vehicles they used to commit the crimes, which hindered the police investigation.

EUROPE

EU Commission to extend use of suspected carcinogen glyphosate (Roundup weedkiller) for 10 more years:
– The European Commission will continue the use of the controversial chemical herbicide glyphosate in the European Union for 10 more years after the 27 member countries again failed to find a common position for or against a prolongation. Representatives of EU states were unable to reach a decision last month, and a new vote by an appeal committee was again unconclusive on Thursday. Because of the deadlock, the EU’s executive arm said it will endorse its own proposal and renew the approval of glyphosate for 10 years, with new conditions attached.
– “These restrictions include a prohibition of pre-harvest use as a desiccant (induces or sustains dryness) and the need for certain measures to protect non-target organisms,” it said in a statement. The chemical, which is widely used in the bloc to the great anger of environment groups, had been approved in the EU market until mid-December.
– The Greens political group of the EU Parliament immediately urged the Commission to backpedal and ban the use of glyphosate. “We should not gamble with our biodiversity and public health like this,” said Bas Eickhout, the vice chair of the Environment Committee.
– Over the past decade, glyphosate, used in products like the weedkiller Roundup, has been at the heart of heated scientific debate about whether it causes cancer and its possible disruptive effect on the environment. The chemical was introduced by chemical giant Monsanto in 1974 as an effective way of killing weeds while leaving crops and other plants intact.
– Bayer bought Monsanto for $63 billion in 2018 and has been trying to deal with thousands of claims and lawsuits related to Roundup. In 2020, Bayer announced it would pay up to $10.9 billion to settle about 125,000 filed and unfiled claims. Just weeks ago, a California jury awarded $332 million to a man who sued Monsanto contending that his cancer was related to decades of using Roundup.
– The France-based International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the World Health Organization, classified glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen” in 2015. But the EU’s food safety agency paved the way for a 10-year extension when it said in July it “did not identify critical areas of concern” in the use of glyphosate.
– EU member states are responsible for authorizing the use of products in their national markets, following a safety evaluation. Germany, the EU’s biggest economy, plans to stop using glyphosate from next year, but the decision could be challenged. Luxembourg’s national ban, for instance, was overturned in court earlier this year.
– Greenpeace had called on the EU to reject the market reapproval, citing studies indicating that glyphosate may cause cancer and other health problems and could also be toxic to bees. The agroindustry sector, however, says there are no viable alternatives. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/eu-pesticides-glyphosate-2fe352fa4426dd90bc32acf1d3304b99
