SPAIN

EU citizens in Spain have until 30 January to register to vote in Euro elections:
– Nationals of other EU countries living in Spain can vote in this year’s European Parliament elections which are due to take place on 9 June.
– To register, eligible voters need to fill in a form and present the documentation requested by the town hall where they are registered on the padrón (town hall register). The document should have a box to tick to express their wish to vote in Spain.
– It is possible to check if a person is already registered in Spain to vote in the European elections via the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) website or at the person’s local town hall by filling in the formal declaration form (DFA model). This form is available at all town halls and can also be downloaded from the INE website.

Blackmailers Are NEVER Satisfied- Amnesty is not enough, Junts calls into question the “legislature pact” sold by the PSOE with new and controversial demands: {Translation, summary}
– After days and days of negotiations in Brussels, Santos Cerdán, secretary of Organisation of the PSOE, assured on 9 November last year that the pact signed between the Socialists and Junts to make Pedro Sánchez president of the Government was not “an investiture pact, but a legislature pact”. This week, however, the government has barely passed its first litmus test with the validation of two of three very important decrees. All this, after a new agreement with Junts, a coalition determined to deny that what they signed – and which had the amnesty law as its central point – would make things easy for the coalition, which will have to negotiate word for word what it approves and which will have to satisfy those of Carles Puigdemont, the former president of the Generalitat on the run in Belgium, with new and controversial requests.
– As it is, and less than two months after the investiture, this week the government has managed to validate two decrees – the so-called omnibus on Justice, which will allow the disbursement of 10 billion euros in European funds, and the one that included the anti-crisis measures – with a pyrrhic result of 172 votes in favour against 171 against. In addition, another decree with measures relating to unemployment benefits was repealed. All of this with the abstention of Junts, which the government achieved at the last minute, and with a new batch of agreements, some of them controversial.
– But this was not the only requirement demanded by Puigdemont’s supporters, who also managed to get the VAT on oil to become 0%; that the money earmarked for the digitisation of Justice be multiplied by five, going from 1.2 to 6.2 million euros; the recognition of “the historical rights of Catalonia in matters of local government “without further explanation”; or that the Government will fully assume “the cost of discounts and bonuses on the price of public transport”. Until now, the Executive financed 30% and the autonomous regions 20% or more. From this year onwards, the government will subsidise its 30%, regardless of whether the autonomous regions contribute their share.
(The progressive Sanchez regime villainizes the far-right VOX party and the moderate-right PP, yet placates the blackmailing, independence seeking (seperatistas), far-right JUNTS he needed to gain the investiture. -Ed.)

PP announces a “route for equality” that will travel through Spain as “resistance” to Sánchez’s pacts with Junts: {Translation}
– The PP leader wants to represent those citizens “who do not accept blackmail”. “We have experienced a week of political embarrassment,” said Feijóo, who accused the government of “abandoning the social majority of Spaniards” and predicted that Spain will face situations “never seen before”.
– The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, announced this Saturday that he is going to start a “route for equality” around Spain to denounce the pacts that the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has reached with the radical Catalan pro-independence Junts to preserve his position.
– According to Feijóo, the route “will be in the main capitals, with two parallel routes, in the north and south” and will travel through “towns, squares and cities” to protest because “the PSOE has chosen this to be the legislature of extortion and humiliation”.
– The first major event of this initiative will take place on Sunday 28 January in Madrid, where a large demonstration will be held.
– “We want this route of equality to be the symbol of Spain’s resistance, which does not accept threats and blackmail and which is ready to demand the civic rights of Spaniards with calm and reason”, explained Feijóo, who called on citizens not to be afraid and to take to the streets to send a “calm but forceful, resounding” message against the Government’s decisions.
– Feijóo wants to be “the voice of those who have no voice and who have been deprived of it by the Government”, and insisted that “Spain will not surrender, it will not be sold and it will not be cut up”. With this route, Feijóo is committed to “stopping those who want to divide and build a wall between Spaniards”.
– “It is not acceptable that in Spain what the pro-independence supporters demand or what is decided in Waterloo is listened to more than what the majority of Spaniards demand, what the Spaniards who live in the towns, squares and cities of Spain need,” added the leader of the Popular Party. Feijóo believes that “it is urgent to restore” coexistence and respect in Spain, as well as the dignity and neutrality of the institutions, that both the Congress and the Senate return to being the centre of Spanish politics and “not a little theatre” at the service of Sánchez or subject to the “remote control” of the former Catalan president and leader of Junts, Carles Puigdemont.
– “There is nothing progressive about handing over border management to someone Mr. Sánchez considered to be the Le Pen”, in reference to Junts, “of Spanish politics”, he said. For Feijóo, these concessions are “nothing Europeanist”, since it is fracturing migration policy into 17 parts if it is ceded to the autonomous communities that claim it because it is “a single European policy” and “there is nothing constitutionalist about auctioning equality and the exclusive competences of the State”, he added. NERJA

Reports Claim Huge Cannabis & Hash Oil Operation Dismantled in Nerja: {Translation}
– The Guardia Civil has arrested nine people for deforesting two hectares of protected land for the intensive cultivation of marijuana in the Axarquia region, in the province of Malaga. According to the Guardia Civil in a statement, the detainees had deforested two hectares of land of pine trees and bushes for the cultivation of plants in the natural area of the Sierra Almijara in the town of Nerja (Malaga). On the protected land they had also built a water reservoir for irrigation and a camp where they processed and dried the plants they cultivated.
– The criminal group also kept a number of large black bags in one of the houses containing the drugs connected to the grow operation. There, they processed the drug in a laboratory to extract the resin from the plant using a technique known as BHO, an acronym for Butane Hash Oil. This technique is extremely dangerous due to the use of large quantities of gas, with the consequent risk of explosion or fire in the house. (BHO is considered by some users in alt-health circles as a miracle cure for many ailments, skin cancer in particular. It costs around €50/gram in legal dispensaries. See map below. -Ed.)
– In the two searches carried out in the two houses in Nerja and Frigiliana (Malaga), the agents found 1,700 kilos of dried marijuana buds packaged in plastic bags and 20 kilos of hashish resin. They also seized more than 12,000 euros in cash, numerous tools for weighing and vacuum packaging and various documents.
– Likewise, 497 kilos of dried marijuana buds and other tools for the cultivation and drying of the drug were seized in the camp set up next to the plantation.
– Four other members of this criminal group who have fled the country have also been identified, for which reason the appropriate international arrest warrants have been requested for them. This operation in the Axarquia region has been carried out by members of different units of the Civil Guard Company of Velez Malaga.
(Something is not right in this story, although all the local news outlets repeat the same facts & figures. So I checked with a friend who manages a large legal marijuana operation in California. To produce 2200Kg of trimmed, dried marijuana buds, in a remote location, with little or no electricity, and without very costly and noisy industrial machinery, is a huge undertaking, requiring far more than 9 people. Even the most skilled trimmers, working 12 hour days, would be challenged to process by hand the 7Kg of fresh buds every day to produce 1Kg per day of final dry product. You can tell from the photos that they were trimming the buds before drying them, the Dutch way. So it would take more than 22 full time trimmers, working more than 100 days, to complete this harvest. At €150/day salary for this risky work, the labor expense alone would be €330,000, plus the expense of providing basic life support services (food, water, toilets, shelter) for the crew. If we are to believe what we are told, this would have been an industrial sized, long term operation that can not possibly have gone unnoticed for so long on public land. I suspect much of the marijuana at the house came from somewhere other than this particular Nerja plantation. Like I said, something is not right about this story. -Ed.)

EUROPE

Iceland Hit by Fresh Volcano Eruption: A volcano erupted in southwest Iceland early Sunday, sending lava flowing toward a nearby town for the second time in a few weeks, authorities said. The eruption began north of the town of Grindavík just before 8 a.m. UTC (2 a.m. ET), the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said. Iceland’s civil protection agency on Sunday said authorities had raised the public protection alert level to “emergency,” the highest on a three-level scale. Barriers of earth and rock were built in recent weeks in a bid to prevent lava from reaching Grindavík, but authorities said the latest eruption has apparently breached those defenses.
