Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

ANDALUCÍA

Another 300 Million Euros Of Wasted EU Recovery Funds In Andalucia Due To Gross Mismanagement By PP Controlled Junta- More Lies & Incompetence Exposed: {Translation, summary}
– The PSOE Andalusian MP Olga Manzano criticised on Monday the “false triumphalism” of the Junta de Andalucía and the PP with aid to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the self-employed in the province to alleviate energy cost overruns, which “have only reached 5.1% of the self-employed and SMEs in the province of Granada”.
– “If we add to the 67,827 self-employed workers the 3,784 SMEs in the whole of Granada, we get a total of 71,611 potential beneficiaries of this initiative which, according to the PP, has benefited 3,659 companies and self-employed workers in Granada. This is absolutely ridiculous”, she stressed.
– Thus, the socialist has criticised that “almost 95% of all self-employed and companies have been left out of this line of aid” and has also criticised that “those who have been most harmed by this cumbersome order, which by decree law brought forward the Government of Moreno Bonilla, have been the self-employed in the smallest towns”.
– “Once again, they are seeing another opportunity for European funds that they have not been able to take advantage of due to the poor management of the Andalusian government of the PP,” he said. “We warned in the Andalusian Parliament that this call was doomed to fail, and now we confirm that in light of the data, so we demand more transparency and less propaganda from the PP,” he added.
– Manzano also alluded to the obligation to return to Europe those resources that have not been used, around 300 million euros of the 525 million budgeted for the whole of Andalusia, despite the needs and demands of the productive fabric of Granada”.
– “This failed aid is a new lost opportunity to get out of the caboose in which the PP has Granada and Andalusia. We demand explanations from Moreno Bonilla and that he takes responsibility for the inability to manage funds from other administrations,” he said. Disingenuous Minister for the Economy Manipulates Numbers, Claims EU Funds Properly Disbursed, But Only Refers To Pre 2021 EU Funds Received BEFORE EU Covid Recovery Fund Was Established!: {Translation, summary}
– The Regional Minister of Economy, Carolina España, has issued a reply to the accusations made yesterday by the Secretary General of the PSOE, Juan Espadas, and last week by the First Vice-President of the Government, María Jesús Montero, and in a more than long list of macroeconomic figures, has denied that the autonomous community is in a worse situation than the rest of the country.
– On another of the aspects for which she was criticised by the PSOE, the lack of execution of European funds, the councillor also assured that “all the European funds allocated in the 2014-2020 framework have been used up, with a certification of 82%, and has guaranteed that the total amount will be certified when the deadline closes in six months’ time, so she will not have to return “a single euro”. {Note she only refers to funds received over 4 years ago, ignoring all the more recent, much greater EU Covid Recovery Funds that have already begun to expire for lack of disbursement. -Ed.}
– Regarding the lack of execution of European funds, another of the points on which Juan Espadas criticised the Andalucian minister, she advanced that the ERDF programmes and the European Social Fund (ESF) are 100% paid. {She conveniently ignores the unspent EU Covid Recover Funds, which are significantly greater. -Ed.} She admitted that in 2023 {3 years after the period they were supposed to be used for! -Ed.}, only 22% of the European funds of the 2014-2020 framework have been certified. The remaining amount {of the funds received for the pre 2021 period -Ed.}, almost 1.2 billion, will be certified within the remaining six months, according to the minister, who assured that the process is already underway and “very advanced” {Advanced? It is more than 3 years past the period these funds were intended for! Plus she totally ignores the now expiring EU Covid Relief Funds that were supposed to be disbursed quickly to recover from the financial damages covid and the illegal lockdowns created. The Junta is holding these billions in funds, that are collecting huge interest, and who knows where that interest money is going? And due to lack of prompt disbursement to the struggling business owners, many having long since gone bust, much of those funds for the 2021-2023 period will have to be returned. As mentioned in the previous article, only 5% of Andalucia’s share of EU Covid Recovery Funds have been distributed! This is an outrage! Tar & feathers is too good for these clowns. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/andalucia/Junta-Andalucia-indicadores-economicos-Espana_0_1867014747.html

ESTEPONA

More Corruption? The PSOE denounces “suspicious irregularities” in tenders for municipal services: {Translation, summary}
– The secretary of the PSOE of Estepona, Emma Molina, has denounced that the tendering processes of the outsourced services of the Town Hall, such as beach services or parks and gardens, present “suspicious irregularities”.
– The City Council has total freedom to benefit the companies it wants, as it can award up to 45% of the points without objective foundations, creating a tailor-made contract.
– Molina said in a statement that the “most striking” aspect of these specifications “is found in the evaluation of applications” since “45% of the score is based on subjective criteria, classified as criteria dependent on value judgements, that is, at the discretion of the contracting board.”
– This means, according to Molina, “that the City Council has total freedom to benefit the companies it wants, as it can award up to 45% of the points without objective grounds, creating a tailor-made contract”.
– The second “irregularity”, in the opinion of the socialist spokesperson, is that the new contractors “are obliged to subrogate certain personnel, who, curiously, are linked to the PP party”. According to the PSOE; “this is a common practice in the PP of Estepona as, previously, the former councillor Sergio Rodríguez was hired by one of these companies”. “These are relatives of members of the government team who are contracted by the previous contractors. They are not municipal workers, but employees of private companies who should remain with these companies, but who will now have to be taken on by the next contractor. So these outsourced services become real revolving doors to keep PP officials” Molina said. ENERGY CRISIS

MORE GOV’T MISMANAGENENT- After 20 Years Work And Millions Spent, Gov’t Shelves Temporary Nuclear Waste Warehouse Project, Opts For Riskier New Plan Distributing Waste Rather Than Centralize It, Abandons Town Who Welcomed Projects & Has Been Building Their Futures On It Since 2011: {Translation}
– On Tuesday, the BOE published the resolution of the Ministry for Ecological Transition that puts an end to the project to build a temporary nuclear waste storage facility (ATC) in Spain. This was to store spent fuel and waste from the dismantling of power plants in a single location as a preliminary step to the “eternal” nuclear storage facility projected for the 2070s.
– This is the official confirmation of the end of a project that has been underway for almost twenty years and that went into a tailspin when Pedro Sánchez came to power. After 23 Jan, the government approved the new nuclear waste plan that banishes this solution and opts for the construction of not one but seven temporary storage facilities, one per plant, as a preliminary step to definitive storage, which will not arrive for decades.
– The government resolution alleges that the decision has been taken “due to the lack of social, political and institutional consensus necessary to designate the site of the ATC”, an argument against which the town that thirteen years ago was chosen to house the storage site, Villar de Cañas {pic}, in Cuenca, is up in arms. There they have been asking themselves for years what political consensus is needed when in the town there is total unanimity supporting it, and the central government did back the very long term project.
– The resolution only mentions “consensus” to justify the renunciation of a project that in 2006 was approved as the ideal solution for waste in the Congress of Deputies and which experts continue to defend as the ideal solution, arguing among other reasons that it would reduce the number of sites in Spain with nuclear waste, that it would facilitate its management, that it would free up the land of dismantled plants sooner and that it would present fewer environmental risks. The option chosen by the government is 2,000 million more expensive than the ATC, and this is without counting the millions invested to date in the project, including the purchase of land, the construction of the buildings that were to house the business incubator associated with the storage facility, the money paid to the people and the region, the infrastructures built and the hours of work invested in the reports that were drawn up. This extra money will have to be paid by the electricity companies that manage the plants, as the government made clear last week with the announced increase in the fee they have to pay for the management of the plants.
– The resolution published on Tuesday “renders null and void” the agreement of the Council of Ministers in 2011 that approved the designation of Villar de Cañas as the site of the centralised temporary storage facility “and its associated technology centre” and urges ENRESA, the company that manages nuclear waste, “to desist from all procedures initiated and linked” to the project.
– It also stipulates that ENRESA should undertake “the free transfer of ownership of the land and buildings it owns in the municipality of Villar de Cañas” and that these should be used “exclusively for purposes of public utility or social interest”. The transfer ‘may only be made to the General State Administration, the Autonomous Community of Castile-La Mancha, local bodies in the province of Cuenca or public foundations of those administrations’. HEALTH

The WHO warns of a ‘European flu’ as hospitalizations increase by 58%: {Translation, summary}
– The WHO on Tuesday warned of a “European flu scare”, reporting that 20 of the 30 countries in Europe monitored are currently experiencing “high flu intensity” that is putting a strain on health services. At a press conference on the flu and covid-19 situation in Europe, the local director, Hans Kluge, explained that the flu epidemic “is not out of the ordinary”, but he did express his concern because in recent weeks hospitalisations due to respiratory viruses have risen by 58%.
– According to WHO data, the population groups currently suffering the worst rates of flu infection are the over-65s and babies.
– ICU admissions up 21%. “Health systems should be prepared for a likely increase in influenza cases in the coming weeks,” warned the WHO’s European director. “Across the region, the past two weeks have seen a 58% increase in reported hospitalisations for influenza and a 21% increase in ICU admissions compared to the previous two weeks.”
– In addition to influenza, the WHO explained that the new covid-19 virus variant called JN.1, also known as ‘pirola’, has now become the “most common and dominant” in the European region. Although the incidence of covid is low, the virus is here to stay and 76% of new infections are due to this variant (JN.1), says the WHO’s European director. According to Kluge, ‘pirola’ is not the most severe variant, but it can be described as “unpredictable”. He therefore called on governments to remain vigilant in their surveillance of respiratory viruses, while warning of a rise in other viruses such as pneumonia and measles.
