Migrant boat arrivals to Spain nearly quadruple in January:
– The number of migrants entering Spain irregularly by sea has jumped nearly 300% so far in January from the same period in 2023, with the vast majority arriving in the Canary Islands, official data showed on Tuesday.
– A total of 3,658 migrants entered Spain by sea, most in fragile boats, between Jan. 1 and 15, up from 921 in the year-ago period, Interior Ministry data showed. Around 95% of those who arrived by sea went to the Canary Islands while the rest entered via the Balearic Islands or Spain’s mainland. The number of boats increased only marginally, to 80 from 65, suggesting more crammed and dangerous voyages.

Shaman sect that had built up an ayahuasca empire in Spain is brought down: {Translation}
– Eighteen people have been arrested in the framework of a joint operation by the General Information Office of the National Police and Customs Surveillance against a neo-shamanic sect that promoted “inner evolution” retreats in which participants were given prohibited psycho-addictive substances dangerous to their health (ayahuasca, sapo bufo, kambo frog and peyote), under the supervision of a registered doctor and a false doctor (posing as a graduate in medicine). This was used to endorse “the suitability of the practice”.
– As reported by the National Police, the investigation started after the detection of a “commercial network” that offered neo-shamanic rituals -through different websites and social networks- with which supposedly the attendees could achieve “an improvement in physical and emotional health”. Agents specialised in the fight against destructive sects were able to verify that the organisation had a headquarters in the Colombian jungle where they had the means and raw materials necessary to produce the ayahuasca concoction, which they then smuggled into Spain.
– This was mainly done through Madrid-Barajas-Adolfo Suárez airport, ‘using mules or simulating imports of other products’. However, they also sent parcels addressed to members of the group. Many of them have been intercepted. They contained psychedelics such as mescaline (a plant-based drug found in peyote and San Pedro cacti) and ayahuasca (a hallucinogenic concoction produced by indigenous Amazonian peoples).
– All those arrested are charged with membership of a criminal organisation and crimes against public health. But, in addition, some of them are charged with human trafficking, professional intrusion, violation of workers’ rights, smuggling and infringement of the law on foreigners. Among them is their leader, who died during the investigation of the case, who “was considered by his followers as a spiritual master or guru” and is also accused of “crimes against sexual freedom and indemnity and of favouring clandestine immigration”.
– This destructive sect, which had headquarters – ‘epicentres of inner evolution’, for its followers – in different Spanish provinces (Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Granada and Ibiza), had managed to establish itself in other European countries (mainly France, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, Finland, Romania and Malta) as well as in Mexico, Colombia and Turkey.
– The aforementioned ‘epicentres’ were where the rituals were held and also where the members of the organisation lived and worked ‘long hours in irregular conditions’, according to the police. According to the investigators, the group belongs to the so-called ‘new age sects’, specifically those of a neo-Shamanic nature.
– The administration of psycho-addictive substances, an instrument used by the shaman to recruit and coercively control the group, was accompanied by “various stimuli” (environmental paraphernalia, chants, lights, incense, etc.) aimed at “inducing dissociative states of consciousness that lead to introjection (making the thoughts or personality traits of others one’s own)”.
– During the searches carried out – eight in total – and the intervention of postal consignments – carried out by the Tax Agency’s Customs Surveillance Service at the airport – the following were seized: 24,000 euros, 1kg of mescaline, more than 60 kilos of ayahuasca and other psychoactive substances with the instruments for their consumption.
– In addition, specialised agents will analyse the computer and audiovisual production material found in the headquarters and which may be relevant to the investigation. Congressional lawyers warn that amnesty may be unconstitutional and requires reform of the Magna Carta: {Translation, summary}
– The lawyers of the Justice Committee of the Congress of Deputies consider that the proposed Amnesty Law that the Government intends to approve, in order to erase the crimes of the procés, has the appearance of being unconstitutional. The jurists on the committee – which is to debate the text and the amendments presented to it – believe that the initiative cannot be covered by the umbrella of the 1977 Amnesty Law.
– Consequently, the lawyers point to the need for a new amnesty to previously require a reform of the constitution to cover it. Lawyers of the Justice Commission admit that the unconstitutionality of the rule may not be obvious, but after close inspection, they identify multiple aspects of it that might not pass the Magna Carta filter, something that, in any case, they leave in the hands of the Constitutional Court.
