Inflammation – A Psychological Thriller:
– Set in London, Brighton, Oxford, and Málaga; this fast paced novel follows Adam, a Psychologist, as he struggles to cope with life after the brutal murder of his truest love, Lorelei, at the hands of her abusive ex-partner. In the midst of his grief, and the guilt from his sense of having failed her; he lives on countdown, awaiting the release of the perpetrator. Furious with a criminal justice system that by its very nature only ever acts after the event, and increasingly feeling the need to do something for the cause in the meantime; the obsessive urge to intervene using his psychological skills, overpowers him. Will he even make it to the release date, or will he already have gone too far?
– I wrote this novel in and around Málaga province; in Torrox and Nerja particularly. It is a psychological/suspense/crime thriller, and would certainly be rated 18+ in places. It is available on Amazon in paperback and ebook in various countries. The links for the UK and Spain are below, and it is best to order it from where you currently are, and/or to where you would like it delivered. I very much hope you enjoy it (please leave a nice amazon review if so); and a big heartfelt thank you to anyone who orders it, and in doing so, is supporting an independent author.

Bill signed to increase the SMI to 1,134 euros per month: {Translation, summary}
– The second vice-president and Minister of Employment, Yolanda Díaz, and the general secretaries of the CCOO and UGT, Unai Sordo and Pepe Álvarez, respectively, have signed the agreement to raise the minimum interprofessional wage (SMI) by 5%, to 1,134 euros per month for fourteen payments, with retroactive effect from 1 January 2024.

ANDALUCÍA

Newts (el tritón) return to Doñana vineyards after eliminating the use of herbicides: {Translation, summary}
– The Wendy Clements Animal Sanctuary in Chucena has succeeded, after years of pursuing a project to prevent the use of herbicides in vineyards in Doñana, in bringing back a species that has not been seen for years, the newt, an insectivorous amphibian. The newt, according to the Sanctuary, is a very difficult amphibian to observe and for years the indiscriminate use of herbicides in the countryside has reduced its numbers in Doñana to worrying levels; in fact, no farmer in the area recalled having found any of these shy animals in their agricultural plots.
– It is easy to confuse it with the more common reptiles known as geckos (Tarentola Mauritanica), although, unlike these, the newt can live in water. It is insectivorous and as a protection mechanism against predators it secretes a slightly poisonous toxin through its skin.
– This centre, in its 100,000 square metres, is managing to recover colonies of owlets that are protected in the almost centenary olive trees that still survive in this area, as well as families of hedgehogs, snakes and – especially – a large number of small birds that take advantage of the absence of poisons and agricultural pesticides to raise their chicks in the vineyard.
– The Sanctuary points out that the newt is an “indicator species” of the level of environmental health of an environment, so they understand that its return represents “a good qualification and an incentive to continue making efforts to recover, in a real way, the natural wealth of Doñana”.
– The Sanctuary hopes that, with this and other projects, Doñana will regain its recently lost status on the IUCN Green List (the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s seal of approval). AXARQUÍA

Spain’s Met Office activates yellow alert weather warning for heavy rain in Axarquía region:
– It is the most longed for news in the driest region of Malaga province, and tomorrow, Friday 19 January, a yellow risk weather alert for heavy rain has been activated by Spain’s Met Office for the drought-hit Axarquía region. Aemet has also issued an alert for the Ronda area, tomorrow, for thunderstorms, from 6am until 3pm. The state agency has also activated a yellow alert on the Costa del Sol, the Axarquía, and the Guadalhorce valley areas for force seven winds and three-metre high waves in coastal areas.
– The storm is expected to hit from dawn and will last the entire day. Rain is expected from 9am until 6pm, with it falling in Malaga city and many other parts of the province. In the Axarquía, downpours, with a probability of between 40% and 70%, could reach 15mm per hour. If it materialises, it would be a welcome relief for La Viñuela reservoir, which is at its lowest ever level, and practically ‘dead’ (at 7.4% capacity, with only 12 .2 cubic hectometres.)
– At a general level, Aemet forecasts very cloudy skies for Friday, with weak to moderate rainfall in Malaga, which is expected to be more intense in inland areas. Very strong gusts of wind are also forecast for eastern inland areas from dawn.
– Looking ahead to Saturday, the possibility of rain in the province increases again to 70% starting at 12 noon. On Sunday, on the other hand, a stable day is expected with cloudy skies and little chance of rain on the horizon (the probability is 15%). It will be the precursor of a new week marked by the entry of another powerful anticyclone weather system to Spain.

The summer will begin with new water restrictions in Malaga if it does not rain heavily beforehand:
{Translation, summary}
– The outlook looks bleak for 2024 as far as water reserves are concerned. With Malaga’s reservoirs holding only 98 hectometres of water, which represents 16% of their capacity, and poor rainfall forecasts, at least in the short term, the supply to consumers is increasingly compromised. In fact, the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has stated that the summer will begin with water restrictions in capitals such as Seville, Cordoba and Malaga if it does not rain intensely in the months leading up to this.
– “We are in an extreme situation and it is not a question of alarming, but of being realistic,” said the Andalusian president on Thursday, who announced the fourth drought decree with an investment of 200 million euros. “We all have to make an enormous effort to contain our water consumption,” said Moreno, pointing out that “at least 30 days of continuous rain” are needed. Therefore, if there is no heavy rain in the next six months, water cuts in the city of Malaga will be a reality.
– This will not be a novelty in the province of Malaga, although it will be in the capital. This past summer, measures such as turning off the water in beach showers or reducing irrigation were put in place, but the supply was guaranteed in the city of Malaga. This was not the case in more than 40 municipalities in the province, which have been living for months with night-time cuts or with some saving measures, mainly in the Axarquia region. The reservoir that supplies the area, La Viñuela, is the most worrying, as it is only at 7.4% of its capacity. In municipalities such as Valle de Abdalajís, the Town Hall has this week taken the decision to extend to 12 hours the cuts in the water supply that the population has been suffering. TORROX

Torrox population exceeds 20,000 for first time:
– Torrox received 31,573,384 euros extra in this year’s budget having exceeded the 20,000 inhabitants quota, meaning that it is now considered a large town. It is an increase of 18 per cent compared to 2023.
– The town hall will acquire specialised staff including six social workers, two psychologists and two social educators “to strengthen an area that has an important challenge to take on,” he said. There will also be an increase in staff in other departments “to ensure that the quality of public services is maintained”. A further twenty posts will be created to reinforce different areas including four new Local Police officers.

ALMERIA

SUPPORT THE FARMERS- New animal legislation reduces Almeria’s pig potential by 14%: {Translation}
– The livestock sector in Almeria faces a significant challenge with the implementation of the new RD 159/2023 on Animal Welfare. This regulation, which increases the minimum surface area per animal from 0.65 to 0.74 square metres, has led to a considerable reduction in the fattening capacity of pig farms. According to ASAJA-Almería, this measure has resulted in a reduction of around 180 places per farm, equivalent to a loss of 5,400 euros per shed.
– The impact is notable in Almeria, the main producer of white layer pigs in Andalusia, with 33% of the regional production, according to Teleprensa. The province has approximately 610,000 animals, distributed among 200 farms and around 370 fattening sheds. Most of the farmers are integrated in companies that provide technical assistance, piglets and feed, while they are responsible for the care and fattening of the animals.
– The president of ASAJA-Almería, Adoración Blanque, stresses the importance of implementing support measures so that farmers can recover their productive potential, especially considering the high cost of expanding facilities. The situation is aggravated by the rising cost of building new sheds and the complexity of administrative procedures, which makes it difficult to expand existing facilities. HEALTH

Attacks On Medical Workers- Malaga registered more than five attacks a week in public health centers in 2023: {Translation, summary}
– Just over five assaults per week. Exactly 5.34. This is the figure for physical and verbal attacks against professionals of all categories in the province’s public health centres in 2023. In total, 278 were recorded last year, 10 more than in 2022. According to figures from the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) Register of Incidents and Aggressions in Health Centres (RIAC), 217 were verbal and 61 physical. The latter number means that one less was reported than in the previous year, when 62 physical and 206 verbal incidents were recorded.
– According to RIAC data, one in five assaults is physical. Although this proportion may have a certain bias as threats and insults tend to be less reported than attacks that compromise bodily integrity.
– The data are known days after trade unions and professional associations reiterated their request for a meeting of the Provincial Table of Aggressions to “rethink” the measures to contain them because “something is failing”. {Something? Can they be this clueless? As is so typical for modern medicine, they want to treat the symptom rather than fix the root cause- incredibly long waiting lists & waiting-room delays, often suffered without proper pain relief. -Ed.}

SPACE

A Massive Amount of Water Ice Has Been Found on Mars, Lurking Beneath The Equator:
– There’s as much water buried there, scientists say, as can be found in Earth’s Red Sea; if it were brought to the surface and melted, it would cover Mars in a shallow ocean between 1.5 to 2.7 meters (4.9 to 8.9 feet) deep.
– Hints of the buried deposits were first detected in 2007, up to a depth of 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles), but scientists didn’t know what they were. New data, and new tools for analyzing that data, have revealed much more about the deposits than expected. “We’ve explored the Medusae Fossae Formation again using newer data from Mars Express’s MARSIS radar, and found the deposits to be even thicker than we thought: up to 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) thick,” says geologist Thomas Watters of the Smithsonian Institution.
– “Excitingly, the radar signals match what we’d expect to see from layered ice, and are similar to the signals we see from Mars’s polar caps, which we know to be very ice rich.”
– Scientists want to know where to find water on Mars for another, practical reason. When humans are eventually sent to the red planet, they’re going to need water for survival. If there’s water there already, that will minimize the amount they need to take with them.
Unfortunately, the Medusae Fossae Formation water is off-limits: It’s buried beneath several hundred meters of Martian dust, beyond our ability to access. Still, the discovery raises hopes that there’s water hiding elsewhere on Mars. OTHER

Truth, reality and revenge- Even the scholars are upset with Spanish officials manipulative speech using word-tricks to avoid truths- An Editorial by Miguel Ángel Aguilar, Parliamentary chronicler: {Translation, summary}
{It appears that I am not the only one disgusted with the propaganda generated by Spanish politics, especially the Sanchez machine, and the mainstream media that parrots him. Finally, academic scholars are calling out the political BS. Lies, deceptive false “truths”, corruption of logic, manipulated statistics and concocted fake consensus opinions are the favored tools of the ruling class. And it’s not just Spain. In most of the speeches by nation and industry leaders at this week’s WEF meeting in Davos, you can identify these same deceptions.  -Ed.}
– If, as Heisenberg argues, we do not know reality, but only the reality subjected to our way of questioning it, we must conclude that the way of questioning reality is what distinguishes and gives prestige to a journalist and accounts for his or her insights.
– Thus, reading the four pages that El País devotes to the interview held in Moncloa and listening to RNE the following day, we can deduce that journalists are sick of evasive answers. Although no hostility towards the president could be suspected in either of these two media outlets, repeated cross-examination on up to four occasions reveals dissatisfaction with Sanchez’ constant evasions.
– Another note shared by both interviews is the incorporation into the president’s discourse of an axiom, with its origins in Aristotle, according to which “truth is reality”. But, as we know, there are real, artificial, virtual, fictitious, augmented and other realities. In other words, the polysemy (multiple meanings of a word) can be a tool of deception, as the twisting of words is used to avoid addressing a specific point being asked. In other words, the polysemy of the predicate leaves the subject undefined.
– Moreover, this recourse to Aristotle, whose logic – including the principle of contradiction – has been abolished in Moncloa (Spain’s White House), only serves to distract attention from the key truth/lies on which we were focusing and to divert us from analysing the method involved in lying.
– As Péter Esterházy writes in Heavenly Harmony, “it is very difficult to lie without knowing the truth”. And acquiring knowledge of the truth is often an arduous task that requires commitment, dedication and understanding.
– In short, to lie is also to deny a reality that the liar, in order to become a liar, must know; and that lying may be one of those necessities that charismatic leaders know how to transform by magic into virtue when they feel obliged to persevere in their posts.
– A different case is the one explained by George Orwell about the good nationalist who, “besides shunning disapproval of the atrocities committed by his own side, develops a remarkable capacity for deafness in perceiving them”.
– In both Sanchez interviews referred to here, it can be seen that the president intends to alter the phrasing of the questions put to him by beginning his answers with the refrain “the question should have been”, which confirms how politicians tend to encroach on the journalists’ area in the same way that journalists tend to overstep the mark in the opposite direction.
– In any case, closer than Aristotle is José Ortega y Gasset (distinguished Spanish philosopher, 1883-1955) and his warning that “every ignored reality prepares its revenge”. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5210166/0/verdad-realidad-venganza/

Our adoption costs are 110€ for pups that have been fully vaccinated, rabies, chip and passport and 180€ for older dogs that have all vaccinations, papers and have been neutered.
