– The athlete from Castellón, Alba Cebrián, has died at the age of 23 in the Hospital Universitario de La Plana de Vila-Real after not recovering from the cardiac arrest she suffered while training last Thursday in the athletics track of La Vall d’Uixó (Castellón), confirmed this Monday the Federación de Atletismo de la Comunitat Valenciana (FACV).
– Cebrián, who belonged to the Club Atletismo Celtíberas de Soria, was training in the athletics facilities of La Vall d’Uixó last Thursday, 18 January, when she fainted. A doctor present on the track gave her cardiopulmonary resuscitation until the ambulance arrived. The young athlete was taken to the Hospital Universitario de La Plana de Vila-Real, where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). After four days in a “very serious” condition, the athlete died.

UK Grants Another 2 Years to ‘Unaware’ EU Citizens to Apply for Settlement Status:
– EU citizens living in the country before Brexit, who were unaware of the EU settled scheme, are still eligible for late applications, provided they are permanent residence card holders, the British government decided.
According to the Guardian, the Home Office is going to reverse a rule made in August that did not allow EU citizens who mistakenly did not apply for the EU settled status, which made their stay in the country legal but at the same time invalidated their permanent residency card, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
– Now, the Home Office will reverse this rule, acknowledging lack of awareness as a valid reason for late applications for the EU Settled status. Full article: https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/uk-grants-another-2-years-to-unaware-eu-citizens-to-apply-for-settlement-status/

EUROPE

Farmers in Romania, France and Germany continue road convoy protests:
– Farmers’ protests have sprung up in Romania, Germany and France, ahead of the EU elections in June. Whilst their demands vary in general they claim that they are taking the hardest hit from environmental reforms and that they need more government subsidies to offset them.
– Romania: Farmers and truckers have been clogging up main roads with their tractor and trucks for a week and a half now. They’re demanding lower taxes and fairer subsidies, but so far talks with the government have failed, and they’re continuing to protest. They’re also angry over the growing cost of insurance for heavy machinery.
– Germany: In Berlin {pic} on Saturday, farmers were joined shoulder-to-shoulder with eco-activists. Farmers say that they are fully supportive of environmentally friendly, genetically unmodified farming, but for that, they do need subsidies or, at least, fair prices set for their products. The farmers have been on the streets since December, when the federal government agreed on a budget cancelling several decades-old farming subsidies and benefits. These could have saved farmers over 480 million euros. Later, Berlin decided to soften the plans, by making the benefit cuts gradual.
– France: In southern France, mass protests over the past few days have forced the government to address farmers’ issues. The farmers say that authorities’ eco-transition policies make national producers uncompetitive. Not only does it make farms unprofitable, it forces France to buy food products from countries where environmental standards are weaker they claim. Photo: Carsten Koall. Hundreds of thousands demonstrate against right-wing extremism in Germany:
– Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets across towns and cities in Germany this weekend as the country enters a second week of nationwide protests against the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
– Demonstrations have gained momentum after reports emerged from investigative news website Correctiv of a meeting of right-wing extremists in Potsdam at which migration policies including mass deportations of people of foreign origin were discussed.
– The AfD, which is polling second in nationwide surveys, has denied the reported migration plans are party policy.
On Sunday, rallies were held in Berlin, Munich and Cologne, as well as in more traditional AfD voting strongholds in eastern Germany such as Leipzig and Dresden, with turnout in many places far higher than expected.
– Organisers in Munich ended the demonstration early due to overcrowding with around 100,000 participants, according to police. Protest organisers said 200,000 people attended. At the start of the event in Berlin, there were 30,000 people and the number was growing, police said. Several tens of thousands also took to the streets in Cologne and Bremen on Sunday. Event organisers estimated around 300,000 people demonstrated nationwide on Saturday. How to Turn Off Smart TV Snooping Features, Instructions For Most Major Brands:
– You may not be aware of it, but your TV knows, and shares, a lot of information about you. Nearly all newer sets are smart TVs, which connect to the internet, making it easy to stream videos from services such as Hulu and Netflix. The streaming apps on your set may collect data on you, even if you don’t ever sign in. And your smart TV will also collect information for its manufacturer, possibly including your location, which apps you open, and more. These companies can also capture voice data when you use the mic on a smart TV remote, and they can collect data about you from outside companies.
– Consumer Reports started reporting on this kind of data collection back in 2015. We’ve been analyzing smart TV data practices in our labs since 2018, and we incorporate our findings into all of our TV ratings each year.
– We’ve found that you can’t stop all the data collection, but you can reduce the snooping by turning off a technology called automatic content recognition, or ACR. This smart TV technology attempts to identify every show you watch—including programs and movies you get via cable, over-the-air broadcasts, streaming services, and even Blu-ray discs. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

AI model earns $30,000 per month as a virtual girlfriend to ‘lonely men’:
– One company has claimed that its AI model {pic} earns $30,000 (£23,600) per month acting as a virtual girlfriend to men online. Lexi Love, as she’s been named, is available round the clock, speaks over 30 languages and receives up to 20 marriage proposals a month.
– Amid growing corncers that AI could become conscious, she’s been built to “flirt, laugh, and adapt to different personalities, interests and preferences”.
– As well as offering paid text and voice messaging, Lexi is even designed to send “naughty photos” if requested.
– The model was created by Foxy AI, with the company saying they designed her to be the “perfect girlfriend for many men” with “flawless features and impeccable style”.
She has blonde hair, blue eyes and a toned physique.
Having launched several AI models at once, Foxy AI found that Lexi was the most popular.
– Since her debut on the site in June 2023, Lexi has attracted “thousands” of fans, reportedly creating a “strong, emotional connection with admirers”. According to her creators, she is proof that love knows no boundaries. A spokesperson for the company added that some fans are even convinced that she is real – and have reportedly begged to meet her in real life.
– “Lexi is breaking barriers and changing the way we interact with AI,” said Sam Emara, CEO of Foxy AI.
“With her growing popularity, Lexi has become a lucrative source of income, currently earning around $30,000 per month from her interactions on the website.
“This is a testament to her ability to deeply connect with people and provide them with a fulfilling human-like experience, despite being an AI.” Source: https://www.the-express.com/lifestyle/life/124781/AI-model-virtual-girlfriend

SOCIAL MEDIA

Facebook Not Only Collects Data About You Directly, Your Internet Activity Is Monitored by Thousands of Companies And That Data From Your Non-Facebook Activity Is Also Sent To Facebook, Even If You Don’t Have A Facebook Account!:
– By now most internet users know their online activity is constantly tracked. No one should be shocked to see ads for items they previously searched for, or to be asked if their data can be shared with an unknown number of “partners.”
– But what is the scale of this surveillance? Judging from data collected by Facebook and newly described in a unique study by Consumer Reports (PDF), it’s massive.
– Using a panel of 709 volunteers who shared archives of their Facebook data, Consumer Reports found that a total of 186,892 companies sent data about them (the Facebook users) to the social network (Meta/Facebook). On average, each participant in the study had their data sent to Facebook by 2,230 companies. That number varied significantly, with some panelists’ data listing over 7,000 companies providing their data.
– By collecting data this way, the study was able to examine a form of tracking that is normally hidden: so-called server-to-server tracking, in which personal data goes from a company’s servers to Meta’s servers. Another form of tracking, in which Meta tracking pixels are placed on company websites, is visible to users’ browsers.
– One company appeared in 96 percent of participants’ data: LiveRamp, a data broker based in San Francisco. But the companies sharing your online activity to Facebook aren’t just little-known data brokers. Retailers like Home Depot, Macy’s, and Walmart, all were in the top 100 most frequently seen companies in the study. Credit reporting and consumer data companies such as Experian and TransUnion’s Neustar also made the list, as did Amazon, Etsy, and PayPal.
– The Markup (tech news publication) has written extensively about the Meta Pixel and how it has been used to surveil people as they dial suicide hotlines, buy their groceries, take the SAT, file their taxes, and book appointments with their doctors. Website owners can configure the pixel to track user website interactions such as searches or filling out a form, sending each action to Meta, even if the user doesn’t have an account on Facebook!
– The data examined by Consumer Reports in this study comes from two types of collection: events and custom audiences. Both categories include information about what people do outside of Meta’s platforms.
– Custom audiences allow advertisers to upload customer lists to Meta, often including identifiers like email addresses and mobile advertising IDs. These customers, and so-called look-alike audiences made up of similar people, can then be targeted with ads on Meta’s platforms.
– The other category of data collection, “events,” describes interactions that the user had with a brand, which can occur outside of Meta’s apps and in the real world. Events can include going to a page on a company’s website, leveling up in a game, going to a physical store, or purchasing a product. These signals originate from Meta software code included in many mobile apps, their tracking pixel, which is included on many websites, and from server-to-server tracking, where a company’s server passes data to a Meta server.
