DoctorLaptop’s Tips #105
Best Browser for Translations & Ad Blocking:
If you want a web browser that does excellent translations automatically, and blocks most ads and popup notices, including bypassing some paywalls, this is what I currently use. Brave browser (https://brave.com/) with the Linguist add-on installed (https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/linguist-web-pages-transl/gbefmodhlophhakmoecijeppjblibmie?hl=en-GB).
Setup:
– Install Brave browser. Open settings. Click Languages, scroll down and disable the built-in translator.
– Now go to back to Settings. Click on Extensions. In Extensions, click on Get More Extensions, this takes you to the Chrome Web Store page. In the search-box type in LINGUIST then hit Enter. Linguist will be at the top of the results. Click it, then click install.
– Once installed you will see the Linguist symbol in your address bar, it looks like a Chinese symbol with the letter A attached. If you don’t see it, click the symbol that looks like a jigsaw piece, find Linguist in the list of extensions, and click the thumbtack symbol to “pin” the linguist symbol to your task bar.

– Now to setup Linguist. Right click the Linguist symbol, click Options. In Options set your language to English. Then, just below, change the Translation Module to “Bergamot – Offline Translator”. Now close that tab.

– Now open any website, and left click the Linguist symbol. At the top of the popup window, click TRANSLATE PAGE. In that same line, change it to show Spanish <> English. Then just below that, change the Auto Translate setting to ENABLE. Then click the Linguist symbol in the address bar to close. Now close Brave. Re-open Brave. Now all Spanish websites will auto-translate to English. There may be a delay of a few seconds before the page translates. If for some reason it does not auto translate, left click the Linguist symbol then click the Translate button.

– Optional: Now import your bookmarks into Brave. Also, if Brave adblocker prevents a page from loading, click the Brave symbol in the address bar and you can temporarily disable the adblocker.
-If this is too complicated, make an appointment with DoctorLaptop. I will do it while you wait, and demonstrate it for you. Fee is €20 for laptops, €30 for PCs.

SPAIN

Sorry Pedro, That Don’t Work For Us- EU warns Sánchez that judges must have say on pardons for corrupt officials: {Translation, summary}
– The European Commission has warned, in response to a written question from Spanish MEPs, that judges should play an active role in granting pardons and other types of suspended sentences in the case of corruption offences. The EU warning has important implications for Pedro Sánchez’s government – which has already pardoned those convicted of sedition and embezzlement – as it moves ahead with the Amnesty Law.
– Specifically, Dolors Montserrat, PP spokesperson on Europe, asked the Commission for its position on the possible pardon of those convicted in the ERE case, the biggest corruption scandal of our democracy – “whose fraud amounts to more than 650 million” – including the former presidents of the Andalusian regional government, Manuel Chaves and José Antonio Griñán.
– It should be recalled that, in addition to granting pardons, in December 2022, the government agreed with ERC a reduction in the crime of corruption to benefit those convicted for the Catalan separatist process. The reform includes sentences of between one and four years for any public official or authority who gives public assets “a different use to that for which they were intended”. If no serious damage is found to have been caused, the prison sentence is reduced to a simple fine.
– For its part, the EU directive, on which Brussels is still working, proposes that embezzlement offences committed in EU territories should be punishable by at least five years in prison, a higher punishment than the rates agreed between the PSOE and ERC. This EU directive is expected to be implemented later this year.
– Sánchez went so far as to justify his concession to separatism in the need to “harmonise” (orig. quote: “armonizar”) the types of corruption with the rest of European countries (!?!), despite the fact that he already knew that the EU was demanding a tougher fight against these crimes. If the European directive goes ahead, it would force the government to amend its own reforms. ANDALUCÍA

Editor’s News Note Regarding Tourism and The Water Shortage:
– All the large towns in Andalucia sent delegations to last week’s FITUR international tourism conference in Madrid {pic}, a week long event, at an expense of millions of euros (Delegates don’t stay at the Motel 6, they don’t share rooms, and they don’t eat fast food or take public transport. They do use expensive room service, hotel dry-cleaner services and limos. -Ed.). As we now have water rationing with daily 8 hour cut-offs in many towns, adding tourists to the mix this summer will add greatly to the water demand. Days will be longer, and tourists will want evening meals. If water cuts off at 11pm, kitchens will need to stop serving by 10pm to allow time for cleanup. That means restaurants will need to stop taking orders at around 9:15pm, while it is still light out! Why are the authorities promoting fully functioning tourist services for the summer when they currently can’t provide these services for their residents, such as water for pools, late night dining, showers after 11pm, etc? The Junta “…anticipates 35 million tourists this year…”, that’s a lot of water. (Ref: The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, said this in interview you can view here.)
– I asked the old Spanish men who congregate at the 6am coffee cafe on El Faro (Torrox Costa) for their take on it. They had these comments. Tap water quality could be decreased, ok for cleaning, but not drinking, as more water can be provided if it does not need full treatment. Or an added cut in water service, during siesta for a few hours in the afternoons. After all, the middle of the night is the lowest water usage time, that cut can’t be saving much water, an afternoon cut would save far more water. Another said towns may prioritize tourist areas who could receive 24 hour water, while non-tourist areas get extended cuts, or even water only on alternating days. We will be told this is economically justified since tourist business taxes are an income source towns need; tourists also bring income local businesses need to survive and that provides local jobs. One old fellow said, over his coffee cup and brandy glass, he remembers tank trucks delivering drinking water to villages in the hills in years past, where residents would fill containers 2 or 3 times a week. But he couldn’t be any more specific. Food for thought…

GRANADA

Granada reaches 27C in January for the first time in history: {Translation, summary}
– Granada reached 27C in January for the first time in its history. It did so this Wednesday, at 15:40 hours, according to the data collected by the Cartuja station, which reached 27.6 degrees. In the weather office at the Armilla Air Base the 25C mark was maintained from 16:00 hours until after 17:00 hours. Both figures leave behind what until then was the highest value recorded in the first month of the year, which was 23.4 degrees Celsius, on 25 January 1959.
– This data is part of the “powerful” anticyclone that is dominating the Iberian Peninsula this week, leaving an episode of high temperatures in Andalucian thermometers and is expected to continue to do so until at least mid-February. EUROPE

France steps up security as Paris farmers’ protest looms:
– France stepped up security measures on Sunday as farmers prepared to converge on Paris as part of nationwide protests from agricultural workers demanding better pay and living conditions. Farmers in France, the European Union’s biggest agricultural producer, have complained of unfair competition from rivals in more lightly regulated countries.
– Over the last week, they have set up roadblocks on motorways to highlight their cause. They have also damaged property, including local government offices.
– Some farmers’ unions called for protesters to set up transport roadblocks around the capital on Monday, and to target the Rungis food market near Paris. “Our aim is to encircle Paris,” farmer Daniel Faucheux told BFM TV, as he prepared to travel to the capital in a convoy of farmers’ vehicles and tractors.
– The Paris police body said that, in response to this, it was increasing security around Rungis and the Paris Roissy airport. It also published videos on its social media account of armoured police vehicles taking up position by Rungis. Photo: AP Thibault-Camus. No ‘Extended Stays’ in France for British Second Homeowners, High Court Decides- Brit Buyer’s Spree Comes To Screeching Halt As Sales Cancelled:
– France’s Constitutional Court has rejected the amendment in a new immigration bill that would allow Britons with second homes in France to stay in the country for more than 90 days, deeming it unconstitutional.
– The immigration bill, a part of which is also the amendment for Brits to be allowed to stay longer in the country, has sparked debate and criticism in France, as it is being perceived as unjust.
– The new legislation is expected to be one of the most stringent laws for immigrants as it limits their access to state healthcare and deports those with a criminal record, among other things. USA

Middle East Conflict Escalates- Three US troops killed, up to 34 injured in Jordan drone strike linked to Iran:
– Three U.S. service members were killed and dozens may be wounded after an unmanned aerial drone attack on U.S. forces stationed in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border, President Joe Biden and U.S. officials said on Sunday.
– Biden blamed Iran-backed groups for the attack, the first deadly strike against U.S. forces since the Israel-Hamas war erupted in October and sent shock waves throughout the Middle East. “While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,” Biden said in a statement. “Have no doubt – we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing,” he said. FINANCIAL

So Spain Wants To Play With The Big Boys? Well, it has been a rough 23 years. We are at the bottom of the pile (see chart). Spain’s productivity accumulates a 7.3% decline this century: {Translation, summary}
– The productivity with which resources are used is the fundamental lever for improvements in countries’ income and welfare. Spain has a worrying record of labour and capital productivity, as well as of total factor productivity (PTF) – the main indicator of the combined efficiency of the factors of production to generate added value. These efficiency trends indicate a deficient use of the resources used. Spain’s productivity disadvantage compared to other countries limits its international competitiveness because part of its productive system is not efficient, holding back cost advantages when competing and improvements in per capita income and welfare.
– Spain has accumulated a decline in its PTF level of -7.3% between 2000 and 2022, a result that contrasts with the advances of developed countries such as the United States, where the PTF has grown by 15.5% in the same period, or Germany with advances of 11.8%, or France with 0.8%.
