– For Windows & Mac. For laptops and Mini PCs only. Tower PC full service remains at €80 (opening and cleaning the inside properly takes way more time).

You wouldn’t drive your car till it runs out of oil before servicing it, would you? I do the most comprehensive cleaning and tune-up possible: verify all System files replacing any found to be corrupt, test all hardware and do hard disk sector repairs if needed, use 5 tool malware/adware/spyware/tracker removal protocol, clean out junk files/logs/history/etc., update Windows (or MacOS)+all drivers+programs and finally optimize your settings and registry for fastest overall performance.
Heavily infected comps, computers taking more than 2 minutes to startup or shutdown, or showing error messages, those need a repair, not a maintenance service. HDD hard disks of 1000Gb or more add €10.

SPAIN
Seventeen cayucos (boats) arrive this weekend in the Canary Islands with more than a thousand migrants: {Translation, summary}
– Salvamento Marítimo intercepted six boats today, Sunday, in which 357 people were travelling as they were sailing towards the islands of Gran Canaria and El Hierro, although one of them was adrift, while a seventh arrived by its own means in Fuerteventura with 53 people, according to sources from the public body, the Red Cross and Cecoes 1-1-2. Added to the ten boats that were registered Saturday, a total of 1,035 migrants have arrived on the islands this weekend. MALAGA PROVINCE
Malaga faces a sunny week with weak rains from Friday: {Translation}
– On Tuesday a maximum of 23 degrees and a minimum of 12 degrees are expected, anomalous values that continue to be around 3 degrees above normal for this time of the year. No major variations in the mercury levels are expected on Wednesday and Thursday, thus kicking off an atypical month of February with a warm and dry atmosphere. Factors which, all in all, make it likely that throughout the month the beaches will once again be crowded.
– On Friday, with the arrival of the showers, the scenario is expected to change slightly, due to the entry of the squall, which will leave cloudy skies throughout the province, light showers and a drop in temperatures to 17 degrees maximum and 13 minimum.
– The situation will continue on Saturday, with the persistence of the cloudy front, which according to the forecast may leave a bit of rain. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/Malaga-semana-soleada-lluvias-debiles-viernes_0_1872713043.html

Planned new reservoir for Cadiz province to be doubled in size to boost short supply on Costa del Sol:
– The Gibralmedina reservoir, on a tributary of the River Guadiaro, will be almost double what was initially planned thirty years ago and this could give enough capacity for the Costa del Sol for a year.
– Once built, it would provide Malaga province with a guaranteed 15 cubic hectometres of water per year, part of which could even be pumped east to the drought-stricken Axarquía area. This new Gibralmedina reservoir supply will be added to that of La Concepción and to the 20 hectometres that the Marbella desalination plant will produce this year and to the network of wells.

Microwaves transfer plastic components to potatoes:
– Supermarkets increasingly offer vegetables that, within just a few minutes of microwaving them in the same plastic bag in which they were purchased, are ready to eat. Potatoes, cabbages, or mixtures of various vegetables come already pre-cooked and – according to the producers’ instructions – it’s not necessary to put them in another container to microwave them. But new research shows that perhaps it would be better to take your veggies out of the bag before heating them up.
– Researchers from the University of Almería (Spain), led by Dr. Francisco José Díaz Galiano, have discovered that this microwave cooking process actually causes a “very pronounced” transfer of plastic components from the bag to the vegetable. The research, published in the journal Food Chemistry, has also identified that the action of the microwave in these cases creates a new compound in the potato, which they call HMPP-maltose. According to Díaz Galiano, this is a “potentially toxic” compound, although new studies are still required to confirm this. Regardless, the transfer of plastic to potatoes remains an issue. TECH
DoctorLaptop’s Tips #106: New Computer Setups –
Getting Started With Windows 11
– Almost all new computers now come with Win 11. Many Win 10 users are doing the free upgrade to Windows 11, if their computer is supported for Win 11 and passes the pre-upgrade “Health Test”. Most computers made before 2018 cannot run Win 11.
– There is a geeky hack to force install Win 11 on ineligible devices, but it is unstable and some drivers may not work. Bluetooth, USB 3.1 and external monitor drivers being the most problematic. You may also get the occasional BSOD (blue screen of death). I only recommend this for computer hobbists. But if you have a mechanically sound, pre-2018, high-end laptop, a legitimate arguement can be made for a forced Win 11 install. Note: A forced Win 11 install is best done as a fresh install, it will be far more stable than a forced Win 11 upgrade from Win 10. The install will wipe the old data, so you need to backup everything you need to save.
***Win 11 Initial Setup***
– You are now required to connect Windows 11 computers to the internet to complete the initial installation and setup in the recommended fashion. If there is no available internet, there is a simple workaround to complete the setup using a “Local Account”. A local account computer is not connected to Microsoft(MS)/Google/Gmail/Outlook/Hotmail/Chrome or Edge by an account or email address. However, as soon as you sign into one of those services, your local account will convert to a MS associated account. At that point they track everything you do.
– If you are security conscious, and avoid everything Google, a local account is also the way to go. Visit this website for instructions on setting up with a local account, with step by step pics: https://www.pcworld.com/article/1921608/how-to-set-up-a-local-account-in-windows-11.html
– Preventing Defender from constantly running in the background: After the setup is complete, restart the computer. Next, run and rerun Windows Update until it says you are fully up to date. Restart. Then run a Windows Defender Quick Scan before you start adding programs. The reasons for doing the scan at this point is geeky: it prevents a persistant, super-user level, auto-start routine from being created in the registry, that constantly tries to do a Defender scan in the background. After the scan you can go ahead with installing programs.
– System Restore is turned off by default on many new computers. You need to turn it on, set the Max Usage to 3%, and create your first System Restore point. Visit this website for instructions with step by step pics: https://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-11/how-to-enable-and-use-system-restore-in-windows-11/
FINANCIAL
Victims of financial exclusion in Spain: {Translation, summary}
– Immigrants face “countless obstacles and difficulties” in accessing a basic payment account “due to the practices carried out by banks, which repeatedly fail to comply with current regulations”, according to Natalia Slepoy, head of Red Acoge’s political advocacy area, in statements to Europa Press. “It means not being able to receive a salary, an impediment to accessing a job, not being able to pay electricity or gas bills by direct debit, these are basic issues,” she said.
– This is the case of Fathi, a Moroccan victim of financial exclusion, who spent four months in 2023 without having an active bank account. As he explained in statements to Europa Press, he had had an account with a bank for more than three years and, without warning, it was blocked. “The government first refused me asylum. When this happened, the bank blocked my account without warning me”, he says. He adds that, during that time, he was unable to collect his salary.
– He also complains that when he went to open the account on the first day, they attached a life insurance policy without telling him anything. “They stuck me with it. When the month passed, I saw that they had charged me almost 20 euros. I went to claim it and they told me it was compulsory, when it was not. They see that you are from outside, that you don’t Spanish speak well and they trick you”, she says.
– Elizabeth (not her real name), a young Venezuelan woman, says that, on her arrival in Spain, she tried to open a basic payment account in a bank and that, although at first there were no problems, it took her two months to receive her card, which arrived “blocked”. “I was told that Venezuelan people were considered high risk for the bank in terms of where the money came from,” she says. Subsequently, she says that she was asked to provide several bank documents to continue the process, but was finally refused to open the account.
– With the aim of making this situation visible, Red Acoge promotes the campaign ‘Cuentas pendientes’. “We claim that financial institutions have a social responsibility that they must fulfil, that they must recognise, that they must guarantee a right that is recognised.” In addition, they also believe that “it is important to verify that people who are resident in Spain, whatever their administrative situation, should have access to this financial product, because that is how it is established in the European directive”. ChatGPT dolls- the new generation of interactive toys your children will want: {Translation, summary}
– The year 2023 marked a remarkable shift in tech fashion: the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) across a wide range of platforms, apps and devices. It was only a matter of time before this trend reached the toy arena as well. So now we have internet connected conversational dolls.
– A prime example of this trend is Miko Mini, a companion robot designed to captivate children with its ability to engage in conversation, tell stories and solve mathematical problems. Another example is Grok, a plush toy created by the startup Curio Interactive, which encourages interactive learning and has gained popularity for featuring the voice of the famous singer Grimes.
– In addition, it is worth noting the therapeutic aspect that some toys are exploring, albeit still on an experimental basis. Moxie, for example, is marketed as a tool for parents of children with intellectual disabilities and ADHD to help their children express their feelings or perform mindfulness exercises. Although there is still no clear industry commitment in this direction, such initiatives promise to open up new possibilities in the world of toys and AI.
