Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

Big Thanks To The Europa Press: Today I include coverage of two propaganda scams exposed Tuesday by The Europa Press. I wish to thank them for their honesty and courage in exposing the truth in these times of widespread disinfo campaigns. While I often disagree with their editorial positions, I must give credit where it is due. -Ed.
Update, 9pm 13/2: This Wednesday evening I am now seeing a few news outlets carry the “PP denial of accusations” story (see below), but none have retracted or pulled down their articles containing the false accusations against the PP. -Ed.
SPAIN
EUROPA PRESS EXPOSÉ- Propaganda & Outright Lies From Sanchez, The Socialists & Even The Far Right- Their claims the PP considered allowing the amnesty to proceed are complete fabrications: {Translation, summary}
– The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has defended this Monday the national leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, by stressing that he has always said exactly the same thing about the amnesty and has reproached the PSOE and Vox for fabricating lies and promoting misinformation.
– “I have heard Feijóo say exactly the same thing: no to pardons, no to amnesty, yes to the defence of the judiciary, yes to continue investigating Putin’s possible connections with Catalan independence”, said the regional president in statements to ‘Telecinco’ reported by Europa Press.
– All this in view of most media outlets posting articles, as if they were fact, about the allegations made by both President Sanchez {pic}, PSOE leaders, and even VOX, that Feijóo would be open to a pardon for Puigdemont on condition that he is tried and that he rejects the unilateral route. According to the same sources, the party would have studied the fit of a possible amnesty during the negotiations for Feijóo’s investiture.
– Feijóo tried on Sunday to settle the crisis over the possible pardon for Puigdemont by making a statement to the media in Ferrol. “I am going to be sufficiently forceful: I have said no, I said no and I continue to say no to any amnesty”.
– In this sense, the head of the regional executive stressed that Vox and the PSOE “are grasping at straws”, confirming Feijóo who has said “nothing different” and defends that “the conditions” for a pardon do not exist.
– He criticised the “team of synchronised opinion from the Moncloa” for trying to “turn this situation around” in order to “stay in power”. “The difference is that right now it’s not just a trickster who is playing the game, it’s 22 ministers, plus the government delegates, plus Cándido Púmpido, plus the state prosecutor”, he said.
– In this line, he remarked that the PP “has not spoken of any kind of pardon.” In this regard, he stressed that “they are making a fuss” to weaken the PP, “directed” from Moncloa.
– {Background Info: All this arises from a statement made by an unidentified PP leader, at a causal talk in a Lugo restaurant last week, where it was mentioned that the Junts had offered to support the PP investiture in return for amnesty back before the first round of elections last year. The PP never agreed to even discuss it. They simply listened to the proposal and dismissed it. This is what was said at the dinner. And now the PSOE and gov’t are twisting that into claims of amnesty negotiations between Feijóo and the Junts. For example, ElDiario, a left leaning newspaper, has this headline, “The PP studied amnesty after meeting with Junts and opens up to pardon Puigdemont”. It’s word-play, and despicable. -Ed.}

ANOTHER EUROPA PRESS EXPOSÉ- Spain’s Farmer Protests Have NOT Been Cancelled As Many Media Outlets Are Claiming- Only one small union has called for an end to roadblocks: {Translation, summary}
– {Most Spanish media outlets continue to post gov’t press releases as if they are news articles written by their own staff, and some of these are simply false. Yesterday many headlines claimed the farmer protests have been cancelled, based on unnamed sources or gov’t press releases. This is not true. One small agricultural union called for an end to the protests, and this is being ignored by the protesters. Congrats to the Europa Press for having the courage to post this article contradicting their pervious coverage of this now exposed misinformation. Well done. -Ed.)
– ASAJA, COAG, UPA and Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de Castilla-La Mancha are calling for official mobilisation in defence of the primary sector this Wednesday, when they plan to block up to four kilometre points on several motorways that run through the region.
– In the province of Cuenca, the rally is scheduled for 9.00 am from Villar de Cantos to kilometre point 162 on the A-43; and in Guadalajara from 10.30 am on the Ronda Norte through the city to the APAG headquarters on the A-2.
– In the province of Toledo, two rallies will take place from 10.00 am, on the one hand at kilometre 86 of the A-5 as it passes through Otero; and at the intersection between the A-4 and A-43, in the vicinity of Madridejos, near kilometre 121.
– In addition, the organisers do not rule out continuing and intensifying the protests in defence of the interests of farmers and stockbreeders “until solutions are found to the problems raised in the protest plan”, they explain in a press release.
– Among their criticisms, they point out that the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) “increasingly imposes limitations on the productive capacity of farms, more restrictions on farm management with incomprehensible limitations on the use of fertilisers, phytosanitary products and livestock medicines and more interference in the free planning of crops by farmers”. Carmen Calvo, active member of the Socialist Workers’ Party since 1999, appointed new president of the Council of State: {Translation, summary}
– Carmen Calvo {pic}, exvice-president of the Government under Pedro Sánchez and ex-minister of Culture under José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, is to be appointed Tuesday (13/2) by the Government as the new president of the Council of State.
– Until now, Calvo was a PSOE deputy for Granada. This Monday, she has officially handed over her seat in order to take up her new post shortly, for which she will receive 86,000 euros per year.
– Calvo’s appointment comes after the Supreme Court annulled the appointment of the former Minister of Labour, Magdalena Valerio, as head of this advisory body for not meeting the legal requirement of “jurist of recognised prestige”. Most homes in Spain were bought with cash in 2023:
– Almost 60% of the properties sold did not need a mortgages to formalise the transaction, one of the reasons why, according to experts, prices have not yet fallen despite the interest rates
– The buyers are generally large international funds that are buying up entire buildings; investors with available wealth who find opportunity and profitability in the sector; as well as foreign citizens willing to invest in a Spanish home.
– This has put pressure on prices in such a way that, although fewer homes were sold in 2023 than the previous year, the cost of these has not fallen. In fact, the sale and purchase of homes in Spain fell by 11.2% last year compared to the previous year and the granting of new mortgage loans to buy a home fell by 21.3%. However, the average price per square metre increased by 1.5% year-on-year, to 1,640 euros on average. ANDALUCÍA
Muddy Rain Possible Thursday: {Translation, summary}
– This week we are surprised by a premature spring-like atmosphere thanks to a significant rise in temperatures. The thermometers remain stable, but many areas of the country will see rainfall as a result of the arrival of a depression in the upper levels of the atmosphere (DANA). But these rains will not be like the usual ones: they will be accompanied by mud in central and western areas of the peninsula, due to the episode of haze that will reach the Atlantic side of the peninsula, according to Meteored.
– On Thursday, a small DANA will form over the west and south of the Peninsula, which will leave abundant rainfall in Galicia, Extremadura and Andalusia, although it will also spread to other areas with irregular distribution and in a weaker form. The showers are expected to be locally heavy and accompanied by storms in the Gulf of Cadiz and the Strait of Gibraltar, according to José Miguel Viñas, an expert from Meteored, who predicts a drop in temperatures in the west and south of the peninsula.
– On Friday the DANA will move away, with the return of the warm air dorsal over the west of the Peninsula. At the beginning of the day, a lot of clouds and some irregular showers are expected in inland areas of the peninsula, which will clear in the afternoon. Temperatures will drop on this day.
– At the weekend, the weather will be anticyclonic, with some morning fog inland and rising temperatures. The sun will shine over most of the country, with atmospheric stability prevailing. Andalusian farmers open their eighth day of protests by cutting the A-4 in Ecija (Sevilla) and the A-92 in Láchar (Granada): {Translation, Updated: Tuesday, 13 February 2024 08:09}
– Andalusian farmers have begun their eighth consecutive day of protests this Tuesday in Andalusia against the EU’s sustainability policies and in demand for support in the face of the effects of the drought or the rise in production costs with new traffic cuts on the A-4 at Ecija (Seville) and the A-92 as it passes through Láchar (Granada).
– According to the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) on its website, consulted by Europa Press, the total blockage of the A-4 in the province of Seville by an agricultural mobilisation occurs between kilometres 458 and 459 in Villanueva del Rey towards Madrid and between kilometres 453 to 457 in Ecija towards the capital of Seville.
– In the province of Granada, meanwhile, a farmers’ demonstration is holding up traffic in both directions at kilometre 220.16 of the A-92 motorway at Peñuelas, a hamlet in the municipality of Láchar.

The latest rains have increased Andalusia’s reservoirs by 180 cubic hectometres: {Translation, summary}
– Andalusian reservoirs have managed to gain water for the fourth consecutive week after the latest rainfall, specifically 179 cubic hectometres (hm3), and have thus reached 22.6% of water reserve, according to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco).
– Andalusia’s reservoirs have a total of 2,511 hm3, which is 179 hm3 more than the previous week and, in turn, represents 1.6% of the total capacity of the region’s reservoirs. In this way, the water reserve stands at 22.6%, 5.8 percentage points higher than the previous year, when, with 3,155 hm3, it was at 28.4%.
– In the last week, the water stored in the reservoirs of the Guadalquivir basin has increased to 23.2% with a total of 1,864 cubic hectometres, while that of the Andalusian Mediterranean basin has gained four tenths and stands at 18.6%, with a total of 218 hm3.
– The reservoirs of the Tinto, Odiel and Piedras in Huelva have gained water to 173 hm3, with their reserve at 75.5% of their capacity, and the same is true of the Guadalete-Barbate reservoirs in Cadiz, which have also gained water compared to last week, with 256 hm3, and standing at 15.5%.

MALAGA PROVINCE
“Official” calendar of the tractor roadblocks in Malaga- these are the roads that will be closed: {Translation, summary}
– The Malaga representatives of Asaja, COAG, UPA and Cooperativas Agroalimentarias, the main agricultural organisations, have shown their support on Monday for the demands of the farmers who have been demonstrating for a week in Spain and have announced a calendar of “legal” demonstrations in the province. They will begin on Wednesday (today) and these are the roads that will be affected.
– On 14 February, from ten o’clock in the morning, farmers and stockbreeders are expected to cut the A-92 at kilometre 7, near Paneque, and at kilometre 149, as it passes through El Faro; the A-45 at kilometre 86, near San Benito; the A-384 – which runs from Antequera to Jerez – at kilometre 90, as it passes through Almargen, and the roundabout at the entrance to Ronda. A demonstration is also planned for that day in the port of Motril (Granada).
– On Wednesday 21 February, the organisations have also called for a “large” demonstration in the capital and, from then on, they will observe “how the demands evolve”. “If we are not heeded, on the 29th of this month we will repeat the cuts of the 14th”, they explained. FRIGILIANA
Frigiliana starts the “pick up the poop & wash down the pee” campaign, with fines of up to €500 for not complying: {Translation}
– Frigiliana Town Council has launched a campaign for the collection of excrement and cleaning of animal urine on public roads for the year 2024, under the slogan “For a good coexistence”. With a clear and concise message, “No la cagues” (Don’t mess up), in Spanish and English, they have started to spread the word about this campaign on social networks.
– They point out that they will offer completely free water dispensers and water dispensers for all pet owners registered at the Town Hall. The local police will monitor compliance with the obligations, and infringements will be punishable by fines of up to 500 euros. “This gesture will help to improve the quality of life in the municipality and save resources in urban cleaning,” the council says. SEVILLA
Farmers warn- they will “cut off Seville” in what is expected to be a historic mobilisation: {Translation, summary}
– Agricultural organisations (Asaja Sevilla, COAG Sevilla and UPA Sevilla), together with the Agri-food Cooperatives of Seville have appeared on Tuesday to call on farmers in the province to support the demonstrations planned for Wednesday on the five access roads to the capital.
– “We are going to cut off Seville”, Ramón García, Secretary General of COAG Seville, stated emphatically. Although they have apologised in advance to the public for the inconvenience that will be caused by the traffic cuts (which will start at 9am on the A-92, A-66, A-49, A-4 and AP-4), the representatives of the organisations have reminded the public that “this is the only way to make the countryside heard”.
– The roadblocks, which will be carried out both on foot from the fixed assembly points and by tractor, will also affect the secondary roads, as there will be numerous traffic jams due to the tractors that will come from all the towns in the province.
– It will be massive. Although there is no planned number of participants, they do expect it to be a “massive” event, which will also be attended by farmers from Cádiz, Córdoba and Huelva. In addition, they jointly called for all farm workers to take part in the general strike. “No tractors should be working in the fields, to highlight the crisis we are suffering”, demanded Ricardo Serra, president of Asaja Seville.
– In addition, they insisted that they support the agricultural mobilisations that have been taking place since the 6th. “We support all types of demonstrations, the vast majority of farmers who have taken to the streets are from our organisations, all in unity of action we will not stop until we are heard”, insisted García. – It has been days since Vox launched an all-out battle against the “workshops on squatting” held in a squatted building of the Seville City Council. The reality, however, is that this type of workshop is proliferating in all Spanish cities. In Catalonia, they have been a constant feature for years and, from there, they have been spreading to other cities in our country.
– Libre Mercado has reported on numerous examples: from courses given by Ada Colau’s Anti-Eviction Platform or the also well-known Stop Desahucios in Getafe or Málaga, to highly specialised workshops that took place in Granada, in which even a lawyer and “militant” explained the “opportunities of the struggle for squatting from within the Administration of Justice”.
– What is really striking, however, about the case that now arises in the capital of Seville is the network behind this workshop, which, for now, operates with total impunity. Not surprisingly, this is only the tip of the icerberg, as the squatters have even set up a “squatting office” in the municipal building, which, as its promoters announce on their website, is intended to “serve as a practical lever for the squatters to use as a means to help them to get out of the squat”, aims to “serve as a practical lever for those who decide to use squatting as a way and form of solving their housing problems”, as well as for those who simply do so as a protest “against private property and the excesses of urban speculation”.
– The alarm was raised last week, when Vox went to the council to attack the PP mayor, José Luis Sanz. “The squat “Malatesta” offers electrical and locksmith workshops, as well as training for squatting. This is unheard of. It encourages the attack on private property and insecurity in the face of the authorities”, denounced Reyes Romero at the time. The city council, owner of these premises that have been squatted since March 2023, has already requested their eviction through the courts. However, the courts have yet to make a move and, in the meantime, the squatters have been left to their own devices. What’s more, aware of the impunity with which they can act, they do not hesitate to promote their work on social networks and even through their own page, where they inform that the “squatting office” is open every Thursday from 6pm to 8pm at Calle Escarpia, 48.
– “Our intention with the office is to facilitate all kinds of knowledge that facilitate and promote squatting”, they say openly. To this end, they make available to anyone who visits them a whole series of practical manuals, as well as numerous legal information and even police protocols, to know how to get around them at all times. The documents in question are also available on their website, which is still open despite the fact that it promotes a criminal offence under our Penal Code.
– For those who find it hard to read, they also organise practical workshops, such as the one held on 3 February. The event began with the presentation of the “Ofi de okupación” and a talk on “legal issues”. This was followed by an “electricity workshop” and, after a “vegan meal”, a discussion on “the myths of squatting” and specific training on the “steps to squatting”. A “locksmith’s workshop” was the finishing touch, which was held after taking time for a snack.
– The anti-capitalist argument. Its promoters combine the practice with the dissemination of reiterative messages against “speculation”, the “old-fashioned landlords” and “neo-liberalism”, but their arguments can also be consulted on the Internet. “Seville, like any other Spanish capital, has been the victim of the most savage speculation for years”, they state as a starting point. In this line, they denounce that “the city centre has been expropriated for and by tourists and the wealthier classes. Tourist flats have flooded our neighbourhoods and have made them increasingly hostile and expensive”.
– The “Ofi de okupación” is presented as the definitive solution to “remove all that neoliberal propaganda against squatting” and to stand up “against the trash media, against the banker, against the old-fashioned multi-owner, against the individual who decides to raise the price of rent because the market commands it, against the landlord who decides to turn his house into a tourist flat, against the state and its workers to tell them that they are scum”. They investigate the poisoning of a dozen doctors in the dining room of the Malaga Regional Hospital, they suspect a chicken in sauce dish: {Translation, summary}
– The Junta in Malaga has opened an investigation to clarify the causes of a food poisoning that 17 doctors on duty at the Regional Hospital of Malaga suffered in the dining room of the health centre last Saturday. None of those affected had to be admitted to hospital and all are progressing favourably.
– The health workers who had ingested the tainted food – assistant doctors and Resident Medical Interns (MIR) from different departments – presented symptoms typical of gastroenteritis, which usually presents with vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.
– Although confirmation of the outbreak is still under study, the trade union organisation stressed that the first suspicion is a chicken in sauce that the doctors consumed during lunch. While waiting for the investigation to progress, and although the main hypothesis is that the poisoning was caused by this food, it will be necessary to confirm which of the ingredients – whether the chicken or the sauce – caused the outbreak.
– The doctors’ union calls for “accountability”. It claims to have been denouncing for some time the “poor quality” of the food consumed by professionals in the hospital. “The food budget is 7 euros. For that price, they cannot serve prawns, but we ask that they take care of the quality of the food they are giving us”, the same sources say.
