ANDALUCÍA
Brain Salad Surgery- Dodging the obvious solution of hiring more surgeons, Health seeks to reduce surgical waiting lists with more overtime- Just what everyone wants…tired, overworked surgeons cutting on them: {Translation, summary}
– Andalusia will try to reduce the surgical waiting lists with a plan that will be launched in April and will last until the end of this year, which will extend the amount of overtime required of surgeons and number of consultations they conduct, the Regional Minister of Health and Consumer Affairs, Catalina García, announced on Wednesday.
– As of 30 June 2023, there were 134,800 patients on the surgical waiting list and 36,000 outside of the decree of guarantees, with an average delay of 118 days, and as of 29 December, 142,500 patients, 53,000 outside of the decree of guarantees and a delay of 150 days.
– {My concern is that if you can pay overtime, you could pay for more surgeons, after all, paying overtime is not cost effective when you pay one and a half times the regular wage. That extra half wage could be better spent on a new hire’s salary. The fact that the paradise of Andalucia cannot attract more surgeons indicates surgeons don’t want to work here, and that is mainly due to low wages, poor working conditions and huge workloads. Having public hospitals staffed with surgeons, desperate enough to accept the lower wages, while being overworked in less than optimal conditions, is not encouraging. Andalucia public health may have it’s share of good surgeons, who find the life here worth the lower wages. But no one can do their best work near the end of a double shift. -Ed.}

MALAGA PROVINCE
Yellow weather warnings in place for this Thursday:
– Met office Aemet forecasts wind gusts that could reach 70 kilometres per hour for Malaga province, including the Costa del Sol, but rainfall will be limited.
– The arrival of a mass of polar maritime air will cause “a sharp drop” in temperatures from Thursday, according to the national meteorological office (Aemet), which forecasts “a significant change in weather”, which will lead to rainfall and very strong gusts of wind, as well as a maritime storm. As of tomorrow, Malaga province will have two yellow weather alerts. One for wind and the other for high seas.
– The first will come into force at noon on the Costa del Sol, Malaga city and the Guadalhorce Valley and will last until the early hours of Friday morning. Very strong westerly gusts are expected, which could reach 70 kilometres per hour. The second will affect the coast, and will be in place from 6pm on Thursday until Friday at 8pm. Aemet forecasts a westerly wind of 50 to 60 km/h (force 7). Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/yellow-weather-warnings-place-for-this-thursday-20240221152155-nt.html
MALAGA CITY
Farmers take to the streets of Malaga in a bid for survival:
– This new day of protests coincided with the morning rush hour, causing numerous traffic jams. The roads remain congested in parts of the city. Malaga council closed access to Paseo del Parque completely and has diverted traffic coming from the east through Paseo de los Curas.
– Some 200 tractors arrived in the city at 10am. The first tractor carried a large banner which proclaimed, ‘The countryside is dying’ (El campo muere). Two separate tractor columns were escorted by local and national police officers. The protesting farmers had gathered at 7am in different cooperatives in Antequera and the Guadalhorce Valley. From there, tractors drove towards the capital via the A-45 and the A-357. At the same time, numerous chartered buses also set off for Malaga. EUROPE
Ukraine outnumbered, outgunned, ground down by relentless Russia:
– Heavy casualties at the hands of Russian forces have been compounded by dreadful conditions on the eastern front, with frozen soil turning into thick mud in unseasonably warm temperatures, playing havoc with soldiers’ health.
– Moscow has made small gains in recent months and claimed a major victory at the weekend when it took control of Avdiivka in the hotly contested eastern Donetsk region. A spokesperson for 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, one of the units that tried to hold the town, said the defenders were outnumbered seven to one.
– Michael Kofman, a senior fellow and Russian military specialist at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a Washington-based think-tank, estimated that Russia’s artillery was firing at five times the rate of Ukraine’s, a figure that Hryhoriy of the 59th Brigade also gave. “Ukraine is not getting a sufficient amount of artillery ammunition to meet its minimum defensive needs, and this is not a sustainable situation moving forward,” Kofman added.
– Moscow now controls almost a fifth of Ukrainian territory including the Crimea peninsula it annexed in 2014, even if the frontlines of the war have largely stagnated in the last 14 months.
