ANDALUCÍA
Why do we celebrate Andalusia Day every February 28?: {Translation}
– This day commemorates the referendum that took place in 1980, which gave Andalusia full autonomy within the Spanish state. But why was this date chosen, what significance does it have for the history and identity of Andalusia, and what activities are carried out to celebrate this day?
– Andalusia Day has its origins in the process of democratic transition that began in Spain after the death of the dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. In this context, the different regions of the country demanded their recognition as historical nationalities and their right to political autonomy. Andalusia was no exception, and on 4 December 1977, more than one and a half million people took to the streets of the eight Andalusian provinces to demand full autonomy for their land. That historic day, known as 4-D, had a tragic ending with the death of the young Malaga-born Manuel José García Caparrós {pic}. Unarmed and attempting to place a “banned” Andalucia Flag atop the building of the Provincial Council of Malaga, he was shot and killed by the police. His figure became a symbol of the Andalusian people’s struggle for autonomy.
– That popular mobilisation gave impetus to Andalusia’s autonomy process, which was based on Article 151 of the Spanish Constitution of 1978, which established the quickest and broadest procedure for achieving autonomy. However, this procedure required the autonomy referendum to be approved by an absolute majority of the electoral roll in each province, which was a major challenge. Finally, on 28 February 1980, Andalusians went to the polls to decide their future. The result was in favour of autonomy in all provinces, except in Almería, where it fell just a few votes short of an absolute majority. Despite this setback, the Congress of Deputies passed a law that allowed the incorporation of Almería into the autonomous process, and on 20 October 1981 the first Statute of Autonomy of Andalusia was approved.
– The Day of Andalusia is a festival that celebrates the will and awareness of the Andalusian people to be an autonomous community with its own personality, history, culture and values. It is a day to vindicate the Andalusian identity, which has been forged over the centuries with the contribution of the different civilisations that have passed through its territory, such as the Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, Jews and Christians. It is a day to recognise the diversity and richness of Andalusia, which is expressed in its landscapes, monuments, traditions, gastronomy, art, music and language. It is a day to remember Andalusia’s contribution to the progress and well-being of Spain and humanity, through its illustrious figures, such as Blas Infante, the father of the Andalusian homeland, or Federico García Lorca, the universal poet.
– Andalusia Day is also a festival that celebrates democracy and citizen participation, which were key to achieving autonomy. It is a day to reaffirm the commitment of Andalusian men and women to the values of freedom, equality, solidarity and justice, which inspire the Statute of Autonomy. It is a day to reflect on the achievements and challenges of Andalusia, which has experienced great economic, social and cultural development in recent decades, but which also faces problems such as unemployment, poverty, depopulation and climate change. It is a day to project the future of Andalusia, which aspires to be a modern, innovative, sustainable and integrated community in Europe and the world. MALAGA CITY
Narco impunity- They steal back 16,000 liters of gasoline seized two days earlier by the Civil Guard: {Translation, summary}
– Last Wednesday night, the Guardia Civil, with the support of the local police in Estepona (Málaga), confiscated 16,000 litres of petrol destined to supply the drug boats sailing through the strait. The entire shipment, including the fuel transport boat, was taken to the Palacio de Congresos in the town of Malaga for safekeeping.
– However, in the early hours of Friday morning, the petrol flasks were reported stolen from the facilities where they were stored. The criminals knew where the seized goods were going to end up and, without any shame and in the absence of security for the custody of the goods, they gained access to the warehouse of the Palacio de Congresos by breaking the padlocks and the bars at the entrance to the premises.
– Sources close to the case consulted by EL MUNDO are convinced that the theft could not have been carried out without the knowledge and possible complicity of a municipal official, as the building is owned by Estepona Town Hall. TORROX
Frustrated robbery in a Torrox bank: {Translation, summary}
– A robbery was foiled at a BBVA branch early in the morning of Friday 23rd February in Torrox-Costa. The robbers, two middle-aged men of possibly South American origin, entered the financial institution located next to the old N-340, at the height of the neighbourhood of Casas Nuevas, on the ground floor of the Mar building, on the Avenida de Andalucía.
– At the time, only a female employee was inside the branch, who was tied to a chair by one of the alleged robbers and forced to open the safe. However, in the meantime, after a few minutes of great tension, when the device had not yet been opened, the employees of a security van that collects and brings money arrived by chance in the vicinity of the bank branch, so that the other robber, who was outside watching, alerted his companion and both fled the place without any loot.
– The employee suffered a severe bruise on her back and a cut on the jacket she was wearing, possibly with a knife with which he threatened her. However, the woman did not see the knife. EUROPE
Germany’s parliament votes to legalize limited marijuana possession and allow ‘cannabis clubs’:
– German lawmakers on Friday approved a government plan to liberalize rules on cannabis, paving the way for the country to decriminalize limited amounts of marijuana and allow members of “cannabis clubs” to buy it for recreational purposes.
– Parliament’s lower house, or Bundestag, backed the legislation, a prominent reform project of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s socially liberal governing coalition, by 407 votes to 226. There were four abstentions.
– The bill foresees legalizing possession by adults of up to 25 grams (nearly 1 ounce) of marijuana for recreational purposes and allowing individuals to grow up to three plants on their own. That part of the legislation is supposed to take effect on April 1.
– German residents who are 18 and older would be allowed to join nonprofit “cannabis clubs” with a maximum 500 members each, starting July 1. The clubs would be allowed to grow cannabis for members’ personal consumption. Individuals would be allowed to buy up to 25 grams per day, or a maximum 50 grams per month, a figure limited to 30 grams for under-21s. Membership in multiple clubs would not be allowed. The clubs’ costs would be covered by membership fees, which would be staggered according to how much marijuana members use.
– Parliament’s upper house, which represents Germany’s 16 state governments, could in principle delay the legislation, though it doesn’t formally require the chamber’s approval. Bavaria’s conservative state government has said it would examine whether legal action against the liberalization plan is possible. HEALTH
New Europa Press article & Spain’s Minister of Health Address Problem Exposed In A DigameXtra Editorial Comment 3 Days Ago- García hopes to put an end to 24-hour shifts for health workers in this legislature, “They represent an anachronism”: {Translation, summary} MADRID, Feb. 25 (EUROPA PRESS)
– The Minister of Health, Mónica García, has assured that she hopes to put an end to 24-hour shifts for health professionals “throughout this legislature”, within the framework of the reform of the Framework Statute, as “they represent an anachronism”.
– “You arrive at the emergency room. You are in a very serious condition and you are admitted to the ICU. A doctor has to make a decision that will mean you live or die. Do you prefer a clear-headed doctor or one who hasn’t slept for 20 hours?” said Tamara Contreras, a specialist in intensive care.
– In this sense, Contreras says that, in a recent shift in her ICU where she had to attend to a very serious patient after 20 hours without sleep, her legs trembled due to fatigue. “It was hard to put a sentence together. My eyelids were drooping. I had palpitations and my head was pounding,” he said.
– She also explained that, due to accumulated fatigue, doctors make more serious mistakes in 24-hour shifts and more diagnostic errors, as well as being slower to make decisions. “We can’t react as well. And that worsens the care our patients receive,” he said.
– Contreras clarified that most of a doctor’s salary comes from on-call duty, which is why many of them defend this system. “But settling for this is not the solution. We must demand that our salary remains dignified without having to give up doing our job in full capacity. There are alternatives and it is time we demanded a solution,” she says.

Over-the-counter sales of ibuprofen 400 mg & Endolex (dexketoprofen) 25 mg under attack by Consumer and User Organisation (OCU) of Spain- meanwhile you can still buy dangerous Nolotil (metamizol) in many pharmacies without a prescription: {Translation}
– The safe use of ibuprofen 400 mg is being questioned following recent measures in France and concerns expressed by the Spanish Consumers and Users Organisation (OCU). Alarm has been raised after French authorities detected a significant increase in cases of serious adverse effects, leading to a ban on the advertising of this widely consumed and readily available over-the-counter medicine.
– The OCU has made an urgent appeal to the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) to launch a thorough investigation to determine whether a similar phenomenon to the French one is occurring in Spain. The concern stems from increased reports of gastrointestinal bleeding and kidney damage associated with excessive consumption of ibuprofen 400 mg, a dose that is currently available without restriction in Spanish pharmacies.
– “France has taken the decision to ban the advertising of this medicine in view of the increase in cases of adverse effects,” the OCU points out, pointing out the responsibility involved in allowing free access to medicines which, if consumed without due precautions, can be harmful to health. The organisation recalls that ibuprofen, like other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), has specific contraindications and a side-effect profile that should not be underestimated.
– Among the warnings issued, the OCU stresses that ibuprofen is “contraindicated in patients with a history of ulcer, bleeding or gastrointestinal perforation, as well as severe renal disease”, adding that high doses, such as a daily intake of 2,400 mg, can significantly increase the risk of heart attacks or strokes.
– In this context, the question arises as to whether it will be necessary to implement more restrictive measures in Spain, such as requiring a medical prescription for the purchase of ibuprofen in doses of 400 mg, similar to the current regulation for higher dosage presentations. The OCU has also put the spotlight on dexketoprofen 25 mg, another OTC NSAID, whose safety should be reviewed with the same rigorousness.
– While awaiting a response from the health authorities, the OCU urges the public to follow the dosage recommendations: “one tablet of ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day”, emphasising the importance of not exceeding the recommended dose and limiting the duration of treatment to the minimum necessary. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
New AI Powered Malware Steals Your Fingerprints- Hackers can capture your fingerprint from the sound of you touching your mobile/tablet/touchscreen:
– Fingerprint authentication has been extensively employed in contemporary identity verification systems owing to its rapidity and cost-effectiveness. Due to its widespread use, fingerprint leakage may cause sensitive information theft, enormous economic and personnel losses, and even a potential compromise of national security.
– The attack scenario of PrintListener malware is extensive and covert. It only needs to record users’ fingertip friction sound and can be launched by leveraging a large number of social media platforms. According to the study, the sound can be captured while using apps such as WhatsApp, Skype, FaceTime or Discord.
– Extensive experimental results in real-world scenarios demonstrate that Printlistener can attack (successfully capture) up to 26.5% of partial fingerprints and 9.3% of complete fingerprints within five attempts at the
highest security FAR setting of 0.01%. {I have been told the same can be done for your iris- your phone’s camera may allow hackers to capture your iris scan, another popular security biometric. As AI learns to defeat all our security methods, soon you may need to provide DNA swabs, as fingerprints and iris scans become obsolete. -Ed.} Full article: https://www.ndss-symposium.org/wp-content/uploads/2024-618-paper.pdf
