Wonderful Wisteria:
One of the highlights during the spring in Malaga is the wisteria pergola at the Botanical Gardens. The wrought-iron pergola literally groans with scented purple blooms for around 3 weeks between mid-March and mid-April. To avoid disappointment, call the Gardens (951 926 180) before you go to check if the wisteria has flowered yet. These gardens are a great place to visit all year round – the wisteria is an added extra! Photo: cadenaser.

SPAIN

Shock as Spain’s IVA sales tax on electricity bills set to double:
– Some households in Spain could be in for a nasty surprise from this Friday, 1 March, when the Spanish sales tax (IVA) on electricity bills rises from the current rebate rate of 10 per cent to 21 per cent. Paradoxically, this will be due to the plummeting electricity prices this month.
– It is expected that the average price of electricity generation will cost 41.20 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) today, the final day of the month’s data. This figure is below 45 euros/MWh, the key price that determines what IVA should be applied to bills. The last anti-crisis decree approved by the government at the end of 2023 established that IVA would be 10% as long as this average price did not fall below 45 euros. Now, all indications are that it will no longer exceed this figure, which will trigger the tax increase to 21%.
– This change will be applied “automatically”, according to government sources, as of this Friday, the first working day of March, when all bills will be recalculated with the new tax rate. The government does not intend to make any changes to prevent the hike. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/shock-spains-iva-sales-tax-electricity-bills-20240228125430-nt.html

Supermarkets investigated over profiteering suspicions:
– The main supermarket chains in Spain are being investigated over whether they are applying the government’s IVA sales tax reduction correctly on basic foods such as olive oil, fruit and vegetables. The country’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs wants to ensure retailers haven’t been profiteering from the measure and that customers are not being ripped off on essential foods and basic goods.
– As part of the first phase of the inquiry, the consumer affairs ministry asked the main supermarket and hypermarket chains operating in Spain to provide details of prices that products have been sold in recent months, taking into account the IVA cut. The ministry also asked for information about profit margins and cost structures of food distribution chains to determine whether or not shoppers have reaped the full benefit of the sales tax reduction.
– Any supermarkets found to be in breach of profiteering rules could face fines of up to 100,000 euros for each transgression. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/supermarket-chains-spain-investigated-over-whether-they-20240227154523-nt.html

Amnesty Hits A Roadblock- The Supreme Court opens criminal case against Puigdemont for terrorism in the Tsunami case: {Translation, summary}
– The judges have no doubt that the events promoted by Tsunami fit the crime of terrorism and place the former Catalan president at the top of the organization.
– The Supreme Court has decided to open a terrorism case against Carles Puigdemont {pic} and Rubén Wagensberg in the framework of the Tsunami Democràtic case, as requested by judge Manuel García Castellón. The Catalan ex-president, says the Criminal Chamber, enjoyed “absolute leadership” over the 2019 mass protests against the ruling on the procés, a movement that it understands could be considered a terrorist offence. “It is necessary and appropriate that they are called to the proceedings,” says the Supreme Court before leaving the case in the hands of the magistrate Susana Polo, one of the few who has not been involved to date with cases of the Catalan procés. MALAGA PROVINCE

Malaga farmers call for new protests- these are the new dates: {Translation, summary}
– Farmers in Malaga have agreed to continue with the protests in the province and have announced new demonstrations in March. The proposed dates are 7 and 13 March, although they will report on them “concretely on Monday 4 March”, according to a statement, specifying that these mobilisations “will be aimed at attracting, informing and involving more entities and people from the rural area, focusing in this case on other areas of the province”. GRANADA

Sierra Nevada already has 60 skiable kilometers, more than half of its total area: {Translation}
– The winter resort of Sierra Nevada presents the best data of the current season thanks above all to the rainfall it received between Saturday 24 and Monday 26 February. Thanks to this, there are now 60 kilometres skiable, which is more than half of the 112 kilometres it has in total.
– Work is underway to reach 70 kilometres in the next few days to make the most of what sources at Cetursa, the company that manages the winter resort, describe as “a new season within the season”. Optimism has returned.
– The snowfalls, especially the one on Monday, have had another equally positive effect: on slopes such as Borreguiles, the thickness of snow has already reached one metre, whereas up until now it was 60 centimetres. On the El Río piste, the most frequented, it has already exceeded 80 centimetres.
– In both cases it is powder snow, the favourite for skiers, and the complementary good news is that, when the thaw arrives and melts, there will be more water available for the rivers and reservoirs and, therefore, for the population of Granada and nearby municipalities, which in the current drought situation is very welcome.
– According to information provided by Cetursa, there are currently 75 slopes open (out of a total of 139) and 15 ski lifts available. These slopes include some of the most difficult ones, the so-called ‘black slopes’, only suitable for the initiated, such as Fuente del Tesoro.
– Today the maximum temperature in Pradollano is expected to be five degrees and Friday it will not rise above three degrees at this point, at an altitude of 2,100 metres. It is cold but snow is not expected until at least Saturday afternoon. It will then continue to do so on Sunday 3 March, according to the State Meteorological Agency.
– Otherwise, an extra incentive to go to Sierra Nevada this weekend is the celebration of two qualifying events for the Snowboard Cross World Championships. Lucas Eguibar, Álvaro Romero, Bernat Rivera and Antoni Toledo are the Spanish team in an event that will take place between 1 and 3 March.
– Hotel occupancy in Pradollano is always difficult to determine, Cetursa however, spoke of an occupancy rate of eighty percent. Source, Spanish: https://www.abc.es/espana/andalucia/granada/sierra-nevada-kilometros-esquiables-mitad-superficie-total-20240229114203-nts.html

EUROPE

Putin warns West of risk of nuclear war, says Moscow can strike Western targets:
– President Vladimir Putin told Western countries on Thursday they risked provoking a nuclear war if they sent troops to fight in Ukraine, warning that Moscow had the weapons to strike targets in the West. Putin has previously spoken of the dangers of a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia, but his nuclear warning on Thursday was one of his most explicit.
– He prefaced his nuclear warning with a specific reference to an idea, floated by French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, of European NATO members sending ground troops to Ukraine – a suggestion that was quickly rejected by the United States, Germany, Britain and others.
“(Western nations) must realise that we also have weapons that can hit targets on their territory. All this really threatens a conflict with the use of nuclear weapons and the destruction of civilisation. Don’t they get that?!” said Putin. Visibly angry, Putin suggested Western politicians recall the fate of those like Nazi Germany’s Adolf Hitler and France’s Napoleon Bonaparte who had unsuccessfully invaded Russia in the past. SPORTS

Tennis News- Britain’s Andy Murray says he is not planning to “play much past this summer”:
– The future of the three-time Grand Slam champion, who turns 37 in May, has come under increased scrutiny after he has struggled for wins in recent months. Murray lost to France’s Ugo Humbert in the Dubai second round on Wednesday. Before the 6-2 6-4 defeat, the Scot said he hoped to play at the Paris Olympics in the summer.
– Afterwards, when asked again about his retirement plans, the former world number one gave his most definite answer yet. “I get asked about it after every single match that I play, every single tournament that I play,” added Murray. “I’m bored of the question, to be honest. I’m not going to talk more about that between now and whenever the time comes for me to stop. “But I don’t plan on playing much past this summer.” Full article: https://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/68421921

How much does a MIR ((Médico Interno Residente / Resident Medical Intern) in Andalusia get paid? The variations according to the year and on-call duties: {Translation, summary}
– The MIR exam (Médico Interno Residente) is the test required of doctors to gain access to a place as a specialist trainee doctor in the Spanish National Health System. This year, a total of 8,772 places were available, insufficient for the 12,852 graduates who sat the exams.
– In April, these specialisation places are awarded to doctors whose MIR lasts for five years. Resident doctors receive a salary during this period that varies according to the year they are in, as well as the health service of the autonomous community in which they work.
– The salary plus paid overtime shift work. Residents doing the MIR in Andalusia have a net monthly salary of 1,106 euros (15,671 euros per year) in their first year; 1,155 euros net (16,377 euros per year) in their second year of residency; 1,213 euros (17,210 euros per year) in the third year; 1,303 euros (18,486 euros per year) during the fourth year of MIR and, finally, 1,388 euros net (19,703 euros per year) in the fifth year. All these salaries do not include on-call duty, which is compulsory for MIR doctors and increases the monthly salary according to the number of hours worked.
– The legal limit is seven shifts per month, although the differences between specialties are notable, so it is difficult to know what the exact salary of a resident doctor will be. The Granada SMA study takes into account a total of 80 hours of overtime per month, divided into 50 hours on working days, 17 on Sundays or public holidays and 13 on Saturdays, in order to establish an average salary that includes on-call duty.
– Why is it important to consider overtime work carried out? Well, logically, because an hour worked on a normal working day is not worth the same as an hour worked on a weekend or public holiday. In Andalusia, for example, second-year residents are paid 14.32 euros per hour on weekdays, 16.04 euros per hour on public holidays and 28.64 euros per hour on special days.
– With this calculation and the prices for on-call hours, a first-year resident doctor would receive a salary of 2,581 euros gross per month (1,942 euros net). In the second year, the annual salary of a MIR would be 33,743 euros gross (25,587 euros net), rising to 43,590 euros gross per year in the fifth year. Pets For Adoption

Axarquia Animal Rescue: A Voluntary Charity, Non-profit Organisation
CIF G93245116 / Charity Number 10567 (Spain)
Email: axarquia-rescue@hotmail.com
Website: www.axarquiaanimalrescue.com
– Kyra & Deedee were born in our care nearly a year ago, part of a litter of 7. They are on the small side of medium, only weighing 14kg. Both in foster homes with other dogs, and full of life and energy, happy, sociable dogs, that really do need their own families to join – could it be with you?
Please take a look at our website, where you will find more information and photos, plus details of other dogs and pups that we have in our care. Our adoption costs are 110e for pups that have been fully vaccinated, rabies, chip and passport and 180e for older dogs that have all vaccinations, papers and have been neutered. This contributes towards their vet and care costs, and helps us to continue rescuing abandoned dogs and cats.
