Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

Reservoirs increase their reserve by another 2% thanks to the rains, but those in Andalusia and Catalonia remain at worrying levels: {Translation, summary}
– The reservoirs continue to rise for the fourth consecutive week. The rains, which this week have been particularly heavy in some parts of the Peninsula due to the passage of several fronts, have meant that the water reserve has experienced a further increase, almost 2%, and that overall the reservoirs are now at almost 55% of their capacity. Despite these results, the Catalan and Andalusian basins continue to show worrying figures.
– Even if the southern basins manage to climb too, the truth is that they continue to present much lower data compared to those in the north. Among them, Guadalete-Barbate stands out, which is this week at 17.3%. It is followed by the Segura basin, 18.9%; Mediterranean Andalusian, 19.4%; Guadalquivir, 25.9% and Guadiana, 36.9%. NERJA

Eviction of a settlement at Las Alberquillas beach in the Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Park: {Translation, summary}
– In the early hours of Tuesday 5 March, a settlement of motorhomes and tents on the beach of Las Alberquillas in Nerja, within the Natural Park of Maro-Cerro Gordo, was evicted. Personnel from the Environment and Water Agency (AAMM) of the Junta de Andalucía, Guardia Civil and Local Police took part in the operation.
– After the eviction, as reported by the Andalusian Government on social networks, the area has been cleaned with staff from the aforementioned agency. The agents have recalled that in this natural area of the Axarquia, camping and overnight stays with motorhomes are not allowed. VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA

Tough Choices For Progressive & Conservative Landlords- While both left-wing PSOE and right-wing PP have facilitated the relaxation of squatter laws & enforcement, far-right VOX works at community levels for landlord rights & swift evictions: {Translation, summary}
– VOX denounces in Vélez-Málaga the “inaction” of PP and PSOE regarding squatter problems.
– In an appearance before the media this morning, the national deputy of VOX for Malaga, Patricia Rueda, accompanied by the also deputy Carlos Hernández Quero and the spokesperson of VOX in Vélez-Málaga, Javier Herreros, has addressed “the growing problem of squatting that affects Vélez-Málaga and, by extension, all of Spain”. A problem, he stressed, that “affects the working classes while the Executive persists in paving the way for criminals”.
– In the words of Patricia Rueda, “squatting is a problem of great concern to the residents of Vélez-Málaga and to citizens throughout Spain”. In this sense, she underlined “the injustice it represents for those who struggle to pay their mortgages while the current laws protect squatters to the detriment of legitimate owners”.
– Further, the VOX deputy has highlighted that her party has brought to the municipal plenary, in Vélez-Málaga, a motion requesting “specific measures to combat this problem”, including “the creation of a technical-legal office and a police unit specialised in the fight against squatting”. This includes, as Rueda explained, “the growing problem of “inquiokupación”. {Inquiokupación occurs when a person signs a rental contract, but after the first or second payment, they quit paying rent. However, the property is not abandoned, going from being rented to squatted (okupa). This situation became a major issue when evictions for failure to pay rent during the Covid restriction times were prohibited. Some renters who stopped rent payments at that time continue to occupy properties without resuming rent payments. -Ed.} These actions, explained the VOX deputy, “seek to address the consequences of squatting, such as insecurity, conflicts and dirtiness that deteriorate the quality of life in neighbourhoods, and that threaten private property and that right”.
– Rueda, likewise, contradicted the latest gov’t claims of a down-trend in squatting, and criticised the current Spanish government, indicating that “since Sánchez has been in the Moncloa (Spain’s White House), supported by communists and the enemies of the nation, there has been a 41% increase in cases of squatting”. She also wanted to highlight the role of the PP in the “modification of the Penal Code in 2015, which lowered the category of this crime from serious to minor”. This is why, from Congress, Rueda explained, “we have presented dozens of initiatives, including a bill and even appeals to the High Court”.
– Patricia Rueda concluded her speech by stressing that, from VOX, they are clear: “To the squatter, a kick in the ass”, expressing the commitment of her party to continue its “fight against squatting from all institutions”, putting the focus on the “real problems of the citizens of Vélez-Málaga and all of Spain”; as well as the proposal of “common sense measures against the inaction of conservatives and socialists who are only able to agree to share the seats in the Congress Commissions”. RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA

Rincon de la Victoria will have a mobile breast cancer detection unit until 19 June: {Translation}
– Women residents in Rincón de la Victoria, Macharaviaya, Moclinejo and Totalán, aged between 50 and 71, will be scheduled for a check-up.
– The Malaga Health District has added a mobile unit for the Breast Cancer Early Detection Programme to the two fixed units it already had, located in the Puerta Blanca and La Roca health centres. This unit will travel to the municipalities and areas furthest away from the existing fixed units. Its current destination is Rincón de la Victoria, where it will be in the Plaza de la Constitución until 19th June.
– The Early Diagnosis of Breast Cancer Programme of the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Andalusian Regional Government invites women between the ages of 50 and 71 to have a mammogram every 2 years. Therefore, women living in Rincón de la Victoria, Macharaviaya, Moclinejo, Olías and Totalán, and who are in the corresponding age bracket, are encouraged to check that they have received their appointment and to participate. Participants are summoned by letter to attend a mammography screening unit. The results of the screening are also sent to their home address by post. If it is necessary to complete the study with other complementary tests, the woman will be referred to her hospital of reference, and will also receive this appointment by post.
– If they wish to ask any questions, change the appointment received or request it again (if for any reason they have not been able to attend before), they can do so by calling 677007017 or emailing info@cribadoandalucia.com. SEVILLA

Rent Control- The new housing index certifies the price of flat rents in Seville should be up to 500 euros less than asked: {Translation, summary}
– The Ministry of Housing published this week a new online benchmark tool with which any user can consult a price range of how much you should be paying for the rent of your home. https://serpavi.mivau.gob.es/
– Despite the fact that the Andalusian region has yet to initiate any procedures in this regard, some neighborhoods in Sevilla are expected to participate in rent controls. A simple search on this tool will display the price differentials pre and post rent control. Thus, the new reference indicates differences of up to 500 euros between an offer and what should be paid for that address. The objective of this index, as the Secretary of State has assured in the field of housing, is to curb speculation, so from now on anyone can access it and consult it freely. EUROPE

Another left-wing extremist group surfaces to launch attack in Berlin:
– The Tesla Gigafactory in Grünheide near Berlin was evacuated on Tuesday after a major power outage. The left-wing extremist “Volcano Group” said it had carried out the assault on the power grid supplying the carmaker.
“We sabotaged Tesla today,” a letter from the Volcano Group said, specifying an “attack on the electricity supply.” The facility is the only factory run by billionaire Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company in Europe.
– Later on Tuesday, police said they were aware of the letter the Volcano Group and that they were checking its authenticity, which would take several days.
– The state of Brandenburg’s Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU) spoke of a “perfidious attack” on the electricity infrastructure. Unknown people had set fire to the high-voltage pylon between Steinfurt and Hartmannsdorf early on Tuesday morning, the ministry said. Operator Stromnetz Berlin, meanwhile, said there were also outages in the Berlin districts of Müggelheim, Rahnsdorf, and parts of Neukölln. Some 2,000 households are affected. Europe To Asia Undersea Internet Data Cables Cut, Services Disrupted:
– Three Red Sea underwater cables providing internet and telecommunications around the world have been cut as the waterway remains a target of Yemen’s Houthi rebels, officials said Monday. Meanwhile, a suspected Houthi attack set a ship ablaze in the Gulf of Aden.
– What cut the lines remains unclear. There has been concern about the cables being targeted in the Houthi campaign, which the rebels describe as an effort to pressure Israel to end its war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Houthis have denied attacking the lines, however.
– The cut lines include Asia-Africa-Europe 1, the Europe India Gateway, Seacom and TGN-Gulf, Hong Kong-based HGC Global Communications said. It described the cuts as affecting 25% of the traffic flowing through the Red Sea. It described the Red Sea route as crucial for data moving from Asia to Europe and said it had begun rerouting traffic. “We estimate that over 90% of communications between Europe and Asia traverse submarine cables in the Red Sea,” he said. “Fortunately, telecom operators have built a high degree of redundancy into the system – there are many cables traversing the Red Sea.” Full article: https://english.elpais.com/international/2024-03-04/three-red-sea-underwater-data-cables-have-been-cut-as-houthi-attacks-continue-in-the-vital-waterway.html

Should the closing time of restaurants be brought forward? An informal poll of readers by 20minutos:
– Note: due to the page translator, the word “restoration” appears in the second option, where it should say “catering industry”. The original uses the phrase “la restauración”, which has several possible translations: to restore, refurbishment, recovery, catering, restaurant-related, etc.

Diaz Doubles Down- Insists On Earlier Closing Times- Yolanda Díaz, on the closing hours of the restaurants, “From 22:00 hours the days have mental health risks”: {Translation}
– The second vice-president of the government, Yolanda Díaz (SUMAR party, communist), spoke on Monday about the closing hours of hotel and catering establishments in Spain during an interview on the show “24h”, specifying that: “From 10 p.m. onwards, the working hours are nocturnal and have certain risks for mental health. These hours must be treated differently, and these working conditions in some cities in our country can be improved”, explained Díaz.
– In this regard, the Minister of Employment also called for an end to “trivialising” the employment rights of professionals. “Let’s stop frivolising with these matters, they are very serious for the lives of workers in our country”, she said. “We are in favour of the good life, of people wanting to enjoy life, of measures that have to do with improving the quality of life, while respecting labour rights,” said Díaz. {…in a serious display of cognitive dissonance. -Ed.}
– On the other hand, the leader of Sumar also highlighted the contrast between Spanish timetables and those of other European countries. “It is clear that the timetables in our country are very different to those in Europe. It is not normal for us to hold meetings in Spain at eight o’clock in the evening, it is not normal,” she said.
{Excuse me, in summer many meetings are scheduled in the evening, after the sun is going down and the heat has lifted. Communists just can’t deal with truth very well, they have their own “facts”. -Ed.}
– Díaz also referred to the criticisms made by the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who accused her of wanting people to be “bored and at home”. Ayuso pointed out on her X account on Monday that Spain is “different” to the rest of Europe and that “it has the best nightlife in the world, with streets full of life and freedom. And that also provides employment”.
– In response to this, Díaz indicated that she was “astonished” at the frivolity with which Ayuso raises the issues, and added that the government is in favour of leisure, but with measures to reduce the working day.

SCIENCE

New ‘Water Batteries’ Are Cheaper, Recyclable, And Won’t Explode:
– Water and electronics don’t usually mix, but as it turns out, batteries could benefit from some H2O. By replacing the hazardous chemical electrolytes used in commercial batteries with water, scientists have developed a recyclable ‘water battery’ – and solved key issues with the emerging technology, which could be a safer and greener alternative.
– ‘Water batteries’ are formally known as aqueous metal-ion batteries. These devices use metals such as magnesium or zinc, which are cheaper to assemble and less toxic than the materials currently used in other kinds of batteries. In a water battery, the electrolytic fluid is water with a few added salts, instead of something like sulfuric acid or lithium salt.
– Crucially, the team behind this latest advancement came up with a way to prevent these water batteries from short-circuiting. This happens when tiny spiky metallic growths called dendrites form on the metal anode inside a battery, busting through battery compartments. The feature also helps the prototype water batteries last longer, retaining more than 85 percent of their capacity after 500 cycles, the researchers’ experiments showed.
– Although the new technology is unlikely to replace lithium-ion batteries any time soon, with further research and development, water batteries could provide a safe alternative to lithium-ion ones in a decade or so, says lead author, chemical scientist Tianyi Ma of RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.
