SPAIN
Amnesty clears the first step- the PSOE and its partners approve the unlocking of the amnesty: {Translation, summary}
– The amnesty law resumes its parliamentary process after a sharp brake that has lasted just over a month and has, at times, threatened to torpedo both the adoption of the rule and the legislature itself. This Thursday, Congressional Justice Committee gave the green light to changes to the rule agreed by PSOE, ERC and Junts at the behest of the latter party, and did so with the votes in favor, in addition to those three formations, of Sumar, PNV, EH Bildu and Podemos, while PP and Vox opposed it. The bill, with these amendments, will be debated and voted on next Thursday in Congress and then will pass to the Senate, where it will face the last stage of its parliamentary process.
– The PP’s criticisms, however, were not limited to the way in which the compromise amendment debated on Thursday was presented, copies delivered just minutes before the session began, but focused on its content. PP spokeswoman Gamarra began her very harsh statements by asserting that, while normally governments in a democracy “seek to strengthen” the state, what Pedro Sánchez’s government is doing is laying down “a red carpet for impunity”. “They are unprotecting the state so that [the pro-independence supporters] can commit the crimes again, but now with impunity,” warned the PP spokeswoman, who described the amnesty as an “unjust, immoral and unconstitutional law”.
– “We are facing a corrupt law that is the payment, the transaction, that you have to make to stay in power: what we are talking about is the ambition of a man who wants to stay in power at any price”, Gamarra also said in reference to the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez. And the PP spokeswoman did not miss the opportunity to also refer to the Koldo case, which has been surrounding the Executive for some weeks, assuring that the “power” that the PSOE currently enjoys “is inextricably linked to corruption”: both economic, due to the scandal of the masks, and political, because the amnesty means “creating a political caste, a private preserve in which certain politicians can roam without submitting to the law and the courts”. ANDALUCÍA
The weather in Andalusia- these are the areas where it is likely to rain the most: {Translation, summary}
– Thursday 7 March will be the turning point that will give way to days of continuous rain in most of Spain, including Andalusia. Precipitation (both in the form of rain and snow in some parts of the region) and thunderstorms are expected at least until Monday 11 March.
– Friday 8th will begin with showers and thunderstorms in the north of the province of Cordoba, in Jerez de la Frontera and in the province of Jaén. Throughout the morning, rainfall will also reach Granada, the north of the provinces of Seville and Cordoba, the south of the province of Cadiz and Malaga. From midday, showers and thunderstorms are expected in the provinces of Cordoba and Jaen, as well as in the east of Seville and the south of Cadiz and Malaga municipalities such as Marbella.
– The rains will continue on Saturday 9 March. On this day, rain is expected throughout Andalusia from 00:00 hours, extending through the night until at least the afternoon, when rainfall is expected to cease in the east of Almeria and the western coast of Huelva. From midday, the AEMET predicts thunderstorms over much of Andalusia, the exceptions being in the provinces of Cadiz, Malaga, and east of Granada.
– On Sunday it will rain again in most of the region, with the exception of the province of Almería. On this day storms are also expected in the north of Huelva, Seville and Malaga and in practically the whole of the provinces of Cordoba, Jaen and Granada at different points during the day. On Sunday a yellow alert for wind will also be activated along the entire Andalusian coastline. MALAGA PROVINCE
Malaga needs to triple quantity of water in its reservoirs across the province to overcome current drought crisis:
– The head of Spain’s state weather agency in the area, Jesús Riesco, has warned, “we are now entering a period in which it is highly improbable that the drought situation can be ended by the summer”.
– In the Axarquía, the hydrological mathematics are very worrying. The large reservoir at La Viñuela now stores 13.4hm³, according to data from the Hidrosur network on Tuesday. To get out of the severe drought situation, the reservoir would have to more than triple its water and exceed the threshold of 41.5 hm³.
– The margin between now and summer is practically non-existent. “From October to February, the good months have passed. March is still a favourable time but we are now entering a period in which it is highly improbable that the drought can be ended by the summer,” the weather expert said.
– The Junta de Andalucía regional government, through the regional ministry of Agriculture, has put out to tender a contract valued at almost 3.5 million euros for the coordination, monitoring and review of the Hydrological Plans and the Drought Plans. The development of the plan is for four years, so administratively there is little confidence in overcoming the current situation in less than four years. This was the case during the 2005 drought, the official settlement of which took place on 5 February 2009, when Malaga and the Guadalhorce exceeded the threshold of 160 cubic hectometres set at the time. Uncertainty about filling pools in Malaga drives up the price of the water delivered by truck: {Translation, summary}
– The College of Farm Managers (CAF) insists on the need to clarify the municipal and regional regulatory tangle and estimates that each pool must be filled at least twice a season due to splash and evaporation.
– On Wednesday CAF received an invoice where the price of tanker truck delivered water has increased 171% in just 7 days. Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/malaga/subidas-171-agua-bruta-cubas-inseguridad-llenado-20240306191748-nt.html

Farmer’s Denounce Lack Of Progress- The Malaga countryside once again takes to the streets to prevent its demands from being forgotten: {Translation, summary}
– On Wednesday, 13 March, these protests will return to the capital. This time, with a demonstration in front of the Subdelegación del Gobierno, on Paseo de Sancha. The intention is to occupy both lanes of traffic. These demonstrations are also planned from 10:00 to 13:00. Both protests have the authorisation of the Subdelegación del Gobierno.
– The rift between the agricultural associations and the Ministry of Agriculture is widening. The first government proposals to put an end to the mobilisations have left the representatives of Asaja, Coag, UPA and Cooperativas Agro-Alimentarias baffled. Baldomero Bellido is the president of Asaja in Malaga, the organisation with the most members in the province. “We are a long way from reaching an agreement,” he told this newspaper in a telephone conversation on Wednesday. It is an assessment that is no different from those made by the other associations. The changes they are calling for should come as a matter of urgency. But negotiations are at a standstill. Bellido admits that farmers and stockbreeders are beginning to feel “tired” after a month of protests and demonstrations. “There is no choice but to tighten up, now is the time,” he adds. To this end, a new calendar of protests has been drawn up in the province, which begins today and will continue on 13 March, with a large rally in front of the Government Subdelegation building in Malaga. MALAGA CITY
Rent Control- These are the municipalities of Malaga that meet the characteristics of the stressed rental areas where rent controls could be implemented: {Translation, summary}
– The purpose of declaring the zones as rent-controlled is to set limits on rental prices. With regard to the characteristics indicated by the government, to be considered as a stressed rental zone, they are the following:
*If the rental price is more than 30% of the average income or average household income in the area.
{Example: If a neighborhood’s households have an average income of €20,000 annual, or €1667 per month, thirty percent of that is €500. So if the majority of the properties in that area have rents higher than €500/mo, then it would meet this test to be classified a stressed rental area, and be eligible to apply for rent controls. -Ed.}
*If the rental price of housing in these areas has increased by 3 percentage points above the CPI in the previous five years in the autonomous community in which it is located.
– In the case of the province of Malaga, there are several municipalities that meet these characteristics. MalagaHoy has made an analysis. Selecting an advert from each of the districts of the city, to find the average price of those offered on a well-known real estate portal, and has made an average of how much it exceeds the average of the range proposed by the Ministry for that flat. The results would indicate a reduction of 500 euros in the price of rent of an average property in the city.
– The list of municipalities in Malaga that have been identified so far as meeting the Government’s criteria, but have yet to apply for rent controls, are as follows:
Benahavís, Marbella, Estepona, Torremolinos, Mijas,
Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Alhaurín de la Torre, Manilva, &
Alhaurín el Grande. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/municipios-Malaga-zona-alquiler-tensionado_0_1880512490.html
TORRE DEL MAR
Body of 44-year-old man found in park:
– A man’s body has been found in a park in Torre del Mar, on the eastern strip of the Costa del Sol, early this Thursday morning (7 March). National Police officers have launched an investigation into the 44-year-old’s death after the discovery in the Islas del Sol gardens at about 4am.
– The corpse has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) in Malaga where forensic experts will now carry out an autopsy. According to sources, initial investigations point towards to a natural death, however, investigators are awaiting the results of the autopsy to confirm this. Transnistria- Will Russia’s next war be in Moldova?:
– On Wednesday, a “congress of deputies of all levels” convened in Tiraspol, Transnistria’s nominal capital, and passed a resolution to ask Russia for protection in the face of “increasing pressure” and the “economic war” unleashed by Moldova. Vadim Krasnoselsky, the “president” of Transnistria and Sheriff’s former head of security, accused the authorities in Chisinau of “genocide” against the people of Transnistria {pic}.
– But what led up to the appeal this time around? Since January 1, companies in Transnistria have had to pay customs duties when exporting goods to Moldova proper. It is part of a catalog of measures the government in Chisinau is applying in an attempt to gain more control over Transnistria. Sandwiched between Ukraine and Moldova, Transnistria has been an uncontrolled hub for illegal trade, smuggling and money laundering for the past 30 years.
– Moldova’s pro-Western head of state, Maia Sandu, who was a civil rights, anti-corruption activist before being elected president, has made every effort since coming to power in 2020 to stop illegal economic dealings with Transnistria. A presidential election and a referendum on the country’s accession to the EU are due to be held this fall. According to Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi, the authorities are “already seeing attempts to destabilize the situation” in the country. PRODUCT ALERT
Cancer-causing chemical found in Clinique, Clearasil acne treatments and more, U.S. lab reports:
– High levels of cancer-causing chemical benzene were detected in some acne treatments from brands including Estee Lauder’s Clinique, Target’s Up & Up and Reckitt Benckiser-owned Clearasil, said independent U.S. laboratory Valisure. Benzene was also detected in Proactiv, PanOxyl and Equate Beauty acne cream among others. Benzene could form at “unacceptably high levels” in both prescription and over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide acne treatment products, Valisure said.
– Valisure’s tests showed some products could form more than 800 times the conditionally restricted FDA concentration limit for benzene. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/cancer-causing-chemical-found-some-acne-treatments-us-lab-reports-2024-03-06/

Tennis News- Nadal withdraws from Indian Wells, ‘not ready’ to compete at highest level:
– Rafa Nadal withdrew from Indian Wells on Wednesday on the eve of his first-round match, saying he is not “ready to play at the highest level”. The 37-year-old Spaniard, who has said he expects to retire after the 2024 season, returned to competition in Brisbane in January after almost a year sidelined with a hip flexor injury, but had to miss the Australian Open with another muscle tear.
– He lost to Carlos Alcaraz in an exhibition event in Las Vegas last Sunday and appeared ready to compete for a fourth title in the California desert.
– “It is with great sadness that I have to withdraw from this amazing tournament,” the 22-times Grand Slam champion said in a statement.
– Nadal will now turn his attention to his favourite surface clay with an eye toward a record-extending 15th French Open title and a second Olympic gold medal at the Paris Games, where tennis will be contested at Roland Garros. -These 3 bundles of joy are part of a litter that were found tied in a bin liner at only a few days old. Born on 24th January and are all available for adoption at 8 weeks of age within Spain. They are Mastin, or Mastin mix, and will be big dogs – the biggest is over 6 kg at only 5 weeks old! All happy, healthy pups, that just need homes of their own.
Please take a look at our website, where you will find more information and photos, plus details of other dogs and pups that we have in our care. Our adoption costs are 110e for pups that have been fully vaccinated, rabies, chip and passport and 180e for older dogs that have all vaccinations, papers and have been neutered. This contributes towards their vet and care costs, and helps us to continue rescuing abandoned dogs and cats.
