Alfarnate, the cherry capital, celebrates its Sakura cherry blossom festival this Sunday:
– The Sakura is the celebration of the cherry blossom, a typically Japanese festival but which for several years has also been echoed in the village of Alfarnate, in the province of Malaga. This coming Sunday, 7 April, the third edition of Sakura Alfarnate will take place, a festival to celebrate the arrival of spring and the flowering of the cherry tree in the municipality, with a programme full of exhibitions, workshops and conferences that seek to disseminate and promote Japanese culture.
– From exhibitions of Shorinji Kempo, Aikido, Kyudo (Japanese bow), Iaido and Kenjutsu (Katana); through workshops of Japanese calligraphy (Shodo), Japanese drawing (Sumi-e), Origami; or games such as samurai cuchivali, geisha make-up, virtual reality games and a showcooking of Japanese cuisine. In addition to a flea market that will be open from 10:00 am and a parade that will go through all the streets of the village.

The crime rate increases by 9.1% in Andalusia in 2023, kidnappings up 67%, cybercrime up 48% !!! : {Translation}
– The Ministry of the Interior’s Crime Balance for the year 2023 reflects a 9.1% increase in crime in Andalusia in 2023, with a total of 413,493 incidents, of which 332,242 are classified as conventional crime, with an increase of 3.1% compared to 2022, and 81,251 as cybercrime, 42.8% more than the previous year.
– The report shows an increase in Andalusia in practically all crime indicators, with the exception of intentional homicides and completed murders, which fell by 4.1% in 2023.
– Among the conventional crimes, the highest increase is observed in kidnappings, which have grown by 66.7%, followed by crimes against sexual freedom, which have increased by 15.2%.
– The Government recorded a total of 20,266 robberies with force in homes, establishments and other facilities, with an increase of 7.7% compared to 2022, while thefts have also increased by 6.9%.
– Drug trafficking offences in Andalusia have also increased in 2023 in the Andalusian region, reaching 4,782, 3.6% more than in 2022.
– In terms of cybercrime, computer scams have grown in 2023 to 72,784, up 47.6%. Other cybercrime has also grown by 11.6%. At national level, Andalusia is the autonomous community in which this type of crime has increased the most.
*CRIMES IN CORDOBA INCREASE BY 12% IN 2023*
– By Andalusian provinces, Cordoba has registered a 12% increase in crimes in 2023, followed by Granada (11.9%), Almeria (11.5%), Huelva and Seville (9.4%), Malaga (8.1%), Cadiz (6.4%) and Jaen (6%).
– On a national level, total crime rose by 5.9% in Spain last year, with 2,459,659 incidents, of which 80.9% corresponded to the category of conventional crime – representing a variation of 2.1% with respect to 2022. – The temperature jump in Malaga city and along the coast will be six to seven degrees, going from 20 to 26-27C as we approach the coming weekend. Benalmádena reschedules “El Paso”, the traditional Easter production involving a cast of more than 150 local actors:

A body was found among the rocks of the breakwater on the beach of La Velilla de Almuñécar: {Translation, summary}
Update (11pm 1Apr24): The authorities have established the body is of sub-Saharan origin, possibly from the shipwreck south of Motril on Friday, March 22, of a boat from Algeria.

Travellers Can No Longer Use Romania or Bulgaria as a Base to Reset Their Schengen Stay Count, same for Cyprus from November:
– Bulgaria and Romania have finally crowned their 13-year journey with Schengen Area accession on March 31, removing all border controls at their air and sea ports of entry. In addition to the removal of border checks, Schengen accession has brought several more changes for the nationals of these two countries and those traveling to, from or through their territory, SchengenVisaInfo reports.
– Beginning March 31, the number of days one spends in Romania or Bulgaria, will be counted towards the total number of days spent in the Schengen Zone. According to the Schengen Area rules of stay, travellers are permitted to spent 90 days in one or multiple Member States, within any period of 180 days.
– Previously, third-country travellers, mainly from visa-free countries, often stayed in the Schengen zone for 90 days within a period of 180 days, and then spend another three months wandering through Romania, Bulgaria, and Cyprus, until their number of days was reset, and they could spend another 90 days in the Schengen countries. This can no longer be done, as stays in Romania or Bulgaria, are now counted as a Schengen area stays.
– Yet, travellers can still use Cyprus as a base to reset their Schengen stay count, but only until October 2024, when the Entry/Exit System (EES) is launched. Once that happens, stays in Cyprus will also be counted towards the total Schengen stay, in spite of the fact that Cyprus still has a lot of work to do to join the Schengen Area.
