Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

What Could Be Worse Than Rent Control For Property Owners? – The Left-wing faction presses the government to expropriate housing that is not rented out: {Translation}
– New attack against private property by Antonio Maestre. The journalist has explained on La Sexta his great idea to solve the problem of housing supply in Spain: to steal houses from their owners.
– Maestre stated that “in Madrid and Barcelona alone there are 172,000 empty homes”. The journalist assures that “there is housing built. What needs to be done is to act on this built housing. And if the owners don’t put it on the rental market in three months, the state should take it, keep it and put it up for social rent. And there is no need to build, in six months you have rental housing”.
– To justify the expropriation of private housing, Maestre excuses himself with the mantra that the evil speculating homeowners in Spain would be keeping their houses uninhabited to harm the poorest (and his own pocket because they would not be making any profit).
However, the reality is that a large proportion of Spain’s empty homes are on the market, but nobody wants them because they are not in good habitable condition or are in areas of low demand.
– Another reason that would explain why citizens refuse to rent their flats in Spain, and prefer to lose money by keeping them closed, is due to the lack of protection they suffer from squatters or inkiokupas, which has been fostered by the Sánchez government with its tolerance of these criminals.
– Although Maestre’s idea may be a radical one, the truth is that the housing market in Spain is subject to savage intervention by Sánchez’s government. Together with Podemos, the PSOE has approved several rules that, for example, prevent landlords from raising rents to the level they deem appropriate, which is a serious attack on market freedom and, de facto, an expropriation of their right to their private property.
– Now, Sánchez’s new Housing Law also proposes an intervention in rental prices, although it will be up to the Autonomous Regions to decide whether to apply it or not. Catalonia has already begun. Parties such as Podemos also contemplate expropriating housing in their electoral programmes.

Madrid Propaganda Machine- Venice Commission contradicts Sanchez regime’s false claims, issues announcement confirming its amnesty-critical report before the European Parliament: {Translation, summary}
– In an appearance before the European Parliament’s Freedoms Committee, the vice-president of the Venice Commission, Marta Cartabia, has made it clear that the amnesty law that the government of Pedro Sánchez intends to approve does not serve to fulfil the objectives of reconciliation that it claims to seek, nor is it being processed correctly, nor does it have clear constitutional backing, nor does it meet the requirement that it not be a personal measure and, furthermore, it unduly includes crimes of terrorism and corruption.
-Referring to a Gov’t spokesperson speech that gave the impression the Vienna Commission supported their position on amnesty, this was exposed as a lie. Cartabia clearly dismantled the socialist discourse that falsely claimed the Venice Commission had endorsed this controversial legislation, and highlighted the puzzling response of the PSOE spokesman, Javier Moreno, who had insisted, against all logic and despite what everyone present had just heard, that the Venice Commission “endorses the amnesty”.
– The representative of the European Commission, Damian Mousnier, also warned the Spanish government that in the report it will issue on the amnesty as soon as it is approved, it will take the Venice Commission’s opinion very much into account. “The European Commission is currently analysing the draft law and we finalise our assessment on the basis of the final adopted text, to determine whether it is in line with EU law, including the fundamental values enshrined in the Treaty. In this context, the opinion of the Venice Commission will also contribute to the Commission’s analysis and is a welcome contribution”. Indeed, although it is a body that is not part of the European Union, Brussels “attaches the utmost importance to the opinions of the Venice Commission and in many cases, we recommend that Member States consult it before undertaking major reforms”.
– Before becoming vice-president of the Venice Commission, Cartabia was Italy’s Minister of Justice, so she cannot be accused of being unfamiliar with the issue she was talking about, an issue the Socialist government would have ignored if not to use it in a distorted way.
– In her view, the amnesty has provoked a “strong division” contrary to its stated aim of achieving “reconciliation and pacification of the country”. It would require “a larger qualified majority” than is currently required under Spanish law and raises serious doubts about its constitutionality, given that in the Spanish Magna Carta “there is not a single word on amnesty” and therefore “the acute controversy that this issue has provoked suggests that it would be preferable, when the time is right, to regulate it explicitly with a constitutional amendment”, as already stated in the report. AXARQUÍA

Commonwealth of Axarquía will propose to the town councils a joint agreement on the filling of swimming pools: {Translation, summary}
– The Association of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol-Axarquia is going to propose to the municipalities of the region to adopt a joint agreement on the filling of swimming pools next summer, although at the moment the drought decree only authorises the replenishment of water in public swimming pools and tourist establishments. This is because these criteria are expected to change and it will be up to the local councils to decide in each case what to do in their municipalities.
– As reported by Cadena SER Axarquia, at the weekly coordination meeting on the management of the water supply, the association’s president, Jorge Martin, believes that it will not be easy to reach an agreement on the matter. In his words, “it is true that we cannot demand from the municipalities, to which we supply water from Axaragua, the position that each of them must follow.”
– He adds that “it is different what everyone is going to interpret; I think we should reach an agreement for everything, act in the same way” Martín said. The Mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Lupiáñez, has raised his voice against the inaction of the Spanish Government in the construction of the future desalination plant in La Axarquía: {Very difficult translation, mostly from an important, if disjointed, rambling speech. Sorry for some awkward phrasing.}
– The mayor of Velez has offered this Tuesday morning a press conference in which he has been extremely critical of the Government of Pedro Sánchez and has “asked, demanded and begged” that “he gets his act together and stop confusing the population”, after the Government of Spain confirmed on Monday that the competences for the construction of this important infrastructure, vital to combat the fight against drought, belongs to the executive in Madrid.
– Lupiáñez called for an imminent solution because the situation is urgent. “If there is a problem that absolutely concerns most of the residents, it is the issue of drought and what measures can be taken in the short, medium and long term to somehow remedy this problem. And it is true that in the medium or long term, the solution is the desalination plant,” said the mayor of Vélez-Málaga, who recalled some ‘political moves’ months ago. “A few days before the end of the municipal elections, the Government of Spain, the Government of Pedro Sánchez, launched with great fanfare the investment of 100 million euros for a desalination plant that was going to be built in the Axarquía region, specifically in Vélez-Málaga”.
– Promises that, far from being fulfilled, are still at a standstill. “Madrid surprised us by saying that it was the fault of the Junta de Andalucía, which did not carry out the project, and apparently did not implement it, and that the Town Hall did not put the land in the hands of the administrations…”, he continued.
– “We, who have no powers in this area, have put ourselves in the hands of the administrations from the very first moment and the technicians were already envisioning, studying and working on a project, in an ideal location, close to the sea, in a better location, close to the current treatment plant, a complex that could provide that improvement, that efficiency for the installation of the desalination plant. But at all times, on the part of the Spanish Government and the members of the Government, we were told that the drafting of the project was the responsibility of the Junta de Andalucía… And what is our surprise? In this case, a Spanish senator, José Alberto Armijo, a resident of Nerja and a resident of the Axarquia region, has asked a question, in this case to the Ministry. And the Government has directly assumed that this action, declared to be in the general interest of the State, must entrust this action to Acuamed, a State company. In addition to requiring a project approved by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. In other words, the Spanish Government is directly responsible for the project. Therefore, all this noise that we have been experiencing was false,” said the mayor, who has been critical of the actions of Pedro Sánchez’s government.
– Lupiáñez recounted all the work that the Vélez-Málaga Town Hall government team has been doing in this regard. “We, from Vélez-Málaga, and I want to be tough in this sense because we are demanding it, we have had many meetings with all sectors: with irrigators, with citizens, with users, with the water company, with all public administrations, except with the Government of Spain. No one from the Ministry has ever contacted us. It is true that the Junta de Andalucía and the Diputación Provincial, for various reasons to do with water, have done so. But in this case, what is sad is that we have spent so much time lost in a political discussion when administratively it should have been functioning because in fact, as the Ministry itself recognises, the competence corresponds to them”.
– The mayor stressed the need for the desalination plant, beyond all the noise generated. “Therefore, we ask, we demand, we beg… I don’t know how else to ask, that we stop the political discussions and get down to work, because it is very necessary. It is true that, fortunately for the weather, for our fields and for our drinking water, we have had a very wet Easter week, which has been very good for us. But it is clearly not the definitive solution to this problem. The definitive solution comes with the construction of a desalination plant and it is the Spanish Government that has committed itself to building it, after a lot of noise and little effectiveness”, he indicated.
– Jesús Lupiáñez ended with an imminent demand. “I hope that now, and I ask, that instead of continuing with the discussion, what is needed is that the senators and deputies of this country, in this case of the province of Malaga, fight and fight in the Ministry so that we stop political discussions and what we do at once is the start of work on the desalination plant. It is they themselves who recognise that the project belongs to the State, so therefore, from Vélez-Málaga, we demand that the Government of Spain get its act together and stop making so many statements, which only serve to cloud, spread and confuse the population, and start the essential works. COSTA DEL SOL

Frustrated hotel owners demand action to improve state of some Costa del Sol beaches:
– Hotel business owners on the Costa del Sol are frustrated over the state of some beaches along the coastal strip, claiming some projects to stabilise the shores have been delayed for up to three years.
– The association that represents the sector (Aehcos) is calling on the Spain’s ministry of environment to speed up the process, saying the destination’s beaches are one of the main drivers for tourism in Malaga province and contribute significantly to the local economy.
– Aehcos pointed out some of the projects that have been stalled since 2021 such as the Marbella beach between Venus and or the San Pedro beach {pic}, which has been at a standstill since October 2020. Aehcos said there are even longer delays with improvement work in Mijas (Playa del Bombo), which was recently badly affected by a storm on 9 March. Urgent action is also needed at Ferrara beach, in Torrox, and at the Baños del Carmen, in Malaga, Aehcos added. TORROX

Military Jets Buzz Torrox Costa: {DigameXtra} At 11:15am Thursday Torrox Costa had several passes and wild maneuvers by multiple jet aircraft. They were flying fast and low, and made a very loud roar as they passed. Here is the only pic I managed to get, notice the jet making a vertical assent.

Update– Shock on the eastern coast of Axarquía due to the roar of two F-18 fighters during training maneuvers: {Translation}
– It was approximately 11:00 hours this morning, Thursday 18 April, when the residents of the eastern coast of the Axarquia, especially those of Torrox Costa, were startled by the noise produced by two F-18 fighter jets on training manoeuvres. The Ministry of Defence has disassociated this episode from the conflict in the Middle East after the uproar caused on social networks by the dissemination of both photographs and videos of these planes. It is a fact that one of the pilots who has starred in this moment is Jorge Rico from Torrox and that some of his neighbours were even warned of the manoeuvres so that they could capture them with their mobile phone cameras from the area around the Torrox Costa lighthouse.
– These two F-18 army planes flew very low over the coast of Axarquia, at a high speed, causing “a loud noise that has generated a great commotion among the population”, as also reported by Diario Sur. Sources from the Ministry of Defence in Malaga have framed the passage of these military aircraft, coming from the Zaragoza air base, “in some routine movements, instruction and training of pilots and military”. They have “completely” disassociated them from the war situation in Ukraine, Gaza and Israel.
– According to Diario Sur, in addition to the passage of the two Spanish army aircraft, there was also “the presence this Thursday, for a few minutes, of a large military vehicle in a parking area near the Torrox motorway exit”. In this second case, Ministry of Defence sources in the province have pointed in the same direction, that these are “routine movements” of military vehicles, specifically a Medium Wheeled Armoured Vehicle (BMR). PRODUCT ALERT

Food alert due to the presence of aflatoxins that can cause cancer in almonds from the US: {Translation}
– The EU’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (Rasff) has issued a food alert warning of the presence of aflatoxins, which increase the risk of cancer, above permitted levels in almonds from the United States.
– These aflatoxins are produced by the fungus ‘Aspergillus’, found especially in areas with warm and humid climates, and exposure is linked to an increased risk of some types of cancer such as liver cancer. The alert was issued by Spain on 4 April to the Rasff system, which has qualified it as a “serious” health risk and has restricted its distribution in Spain.
– Faced with this alert, FACUA-Consumers in Action criticised the fact that the Rasff system does not provide information on the producer company or the area where the almonds were grown. The analyses have been carried out in a border control.
– In this sense, it has pointed out that the scarce information published by the European Commission sows suspicion about all almonds from the United States, as it does not give details about the producing company or even the area of the country where they have been grown. CULTURE

The Infanta Sofia makes her first solo performance: {Translation}
– Infanta Sofía de Borbón will take part in her first institutional act on behalf of the Crown. Specifically, Princess Leonor’s sister, who will turn 17 on 29 April, will make her debut at the awards ceremony for the photography competition organised by Patrimonio Nacional, which will bear her name.
– This is the first time that the youngest daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will be seen alone. Usually, when she has had to participate in some kind of event or institutional activity, it has always been with her sister or her parents, the King and Queen.
– In a statement, Patrimonio Nacional has announced the launch of the competition ‘Objetivo Patrimonio. Infanta Sofía Photography Competition’ with which the institution “seeks to disseminate and showcase its rich historical, cultural and natural heritage through images”.
– “The main theme of the photographs will be any of the spaces and collections managed by Patrimonio Nacional and they will be divided into three categories: palaces and monasteries, natural spaces and works of art”, specifies Patrimonio Nacional, adding that all amateur photographers resident in Spain of legal age may participate. It also announces that the Infanta Sofía will be the patron of the competition and will be in charge of awarding the prizes. Photo: GTRES.
