New Date- Malaga Artisan Goat Cheese & Axarquía Wine Market: Sunday, May 12
Dedicated this year to the ajoblanco (white garlic soup, usually served cold) of neighboring Almáchar. In years past, especially during food shortages, it was important to stretch all food supplies and minimize waste. This soup was popular in such times. One key ingredient is stale bread, which was not to be wasted when folks are hungry. Stale bread is also used in migas & gazpacho andaluz, other staples during hard times.
Typical ajoblanco contains: Crumbs of bread from the previous day; Cold water;
Extra virgin olive oil; raw almonds; Garlic clove; Vinegar & Salt.

Wanted- Real Estate Lawyer Consult For Proposed “New Concept” Retirement Community:
– Naythan, under the DigameXtra banner, is investigating a new concept in retirement-housing communities gaining popularity across the globe. A blend of “cohousing” and “microhouses”. I’d like to know if it can be done in Andalucia. Local property/building laws are complex. Before I dedicate time to this project, I need concrete answers to a few basic questions, to know if it is feasible. Is there an expert out there who would be willing to answer a few questions, pro bono, by email? Please reply to doctorlaptop@protonmail.com
– I’ll share more info regarding this proposed project with the readers in coming weeks. No reason to get you stirred up before I know if it is feasible in Andalucia. Here are some links for anyone interested.

The judge entrusts the UCO of the Guardia Civil with the investigation of the case against President Sanchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez, for alleged influence peddling: {Translation, summary}
– The head of the 41st Court of Instruction of Madrid, Juan Carlos Peinado, has sent an official letter to the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard in the framework of the case opened against Begoña Gómez {pic}, wife of the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to investigate the alleged crimes of influence peddling and corruption, denounced by Manos Limpias.
– According to ‘El Mundo’ and confirmed by sources of the investigation to ABC, the judge turned a few days ago to this unit specialised in the fight against corruption to take charge of the investigation. Specifically, the UCO will be in charge of delving into the facts reported by Manos Limpias in a Madrid court, where she is accused of crimes of influence peddling and corruption, and to clarify her involvement. The Senate will veto the Amnesty Law on May 14 after the lawyer’s report warns that it is unconstitutional: {Translation, summary}
– On 14 May, the Plenary Session of the Senate will vote on the PP’s proposed veto of the Amnesty Law. It is expected the PP’s veto is approved, thanks to its absolute majority.
– On Monday, the Senate Constitutional Committee will draw up the final opinion on the Amnesty Law, based on the report by the Committee’s lawyers, the hearings of experts and the PP’s proposed veto of the law, which will then be endorsed on Thursday 9 May.
– The 60-page report by the chamber’s lawyers warns that the law is unconstitutional, predicting a clash with European law. The text, signed by Eugenio de Santos, says that “if a judicial body harbours doubts about the compatibility of a law with both European Union law and the Constitution”, the European Court of Justice states that this is a reason for “its inapplicability”, for which a “preliminary ruling question” must be raised. “In the event that the preliminary ruling is rejected, this does not prevent a question of unconstitutionality from being raised before the Constitutional Court”, warns the report, which states that “it is the obligation of national judges, in their capacity as judges of Union law, to disregard a domestic rule that they consider clearly incompatible with that law without having to request or wait for its prior elimination”. ANDALUCÍA

Socialist Mom Causes Outrage- Mother of PSOE councilor attacks Garruchero City Council with faeces and urine: {Translation, summary}
– Political tensions in Garrucha are growing. The Levante town, known for its red shrimp, with a population of around 10,000, has been experiencing unpleasant episodes in recent days. The municipality is governed by the PP, with its mayor Pedro Zamora, following a pact with two representatives of the IU, Álvaro Ramos and José Luis Fernández.
– Last week, the mother of a socialist councillor came to the garruchero council and asked for an appointment with Ramos, the deputy mayor. “She came with a bucket full of faeces and human urine, spilled it in his office and verbally insulted him,” the Garrucha Town Hall denounced in a statement. Zamora describes these events as “shameful” and calls for respect for the assaulted councillor. The mayor adds that it is not the first time that a case of an inappropriate attitude towards a member of the government team has occurred.
– “The relatives of an elected councillor of the PSOE of Garrucha have been repeatedly and criminally harassing the Plenary and its councillors. The crimes have not been condemned and therefore blessed by the socialist grouping of Garrucha led by the president of the party at provincial level”, states a letter that Zamora and Ramos have sent to the secretary general of the socialists in Almeria.
– The events took place on 3 May. The mother of the socialist councillor arrived at the office and spread a bucket of faeces and urine all over the furniture and the floor. The scatological act was witnessed by civil servants, councillors and the councillor himself. MALAGA PROVINCE

Last week’s rains shore up Costa del Sol and Malaga province’s water reserves for summer:
– The storms in Spain that began last Saturday and Sunday (27 and 28 April), and which offered their last downpour during the public holiday on 1 May, have left accumulated rainfall of up to 20mm in Malaga province, according to data from the Junta de Andalucía’s Hidrosur Network.
– The rain that fell in April has made it possible to feed and keep alive the runoff from the rivers and streams on their way to the province’s reservoirs, which are still increasing. This has made it possible not only to irrigate the fields and reduce urban consumption, but also to shore up reserves for the summer. From now on, it is unlikely that any new weather front of any significance will arrive to bring more rain.
– The net gain in the last week has not been huge, at around one cubic hectometre, and it has been distributed mainly between the reservoirs of La Concepción (which supplies the western strip of the Costa del Sol) and La Viñuela (Axarquía). In fact, both reservoirs continue to gain runoff.
– The storms last Saturday left a maximum of 16mm in Alcaucín; more than 10mm in La Viñuela and 9mm in the Benamargosa river. Therefore, the Axarquia was the area that benefited most from this latest episode. This allowed the Axarquia reservoir to add 0.3 Hm3, up to 31.6 as of Thursday afternoon (19.2%), according to the water resources management service of the Junta de Andalucía. And the best thing is that this figure continues to grow. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/the-latest-rains-shore-up-malagas-water-20240503084443-nt.html

Throughout the weekend, several boats arrived on the coast of Almería, including one that reached the coast of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park (Almería) and allowed more than 20 people to disembark before the gaze of the beach users and the presence of the Civil Guard, which followed the inflatable boat, which remained on the coast.

ANTEQUERA

Several suffer gunshot injuries after rival clans clash in Antequera:
– According to sources, the incident involved a large number of people who were allegedly fighting because they belonged to different clans. Everything suggests that, in the middle of the confrontation, one of the parties opened fire on the other.
– Several people have been injured in the shooting incident in Antequera. According to sources, at least six people were hospitalised with gunshot injuries, one of whom had to be rushed to the Regional University Hospital of Malaga due to their serious condition, according to the health authorities Apparently, the origin of the incident was a clash between rival clans the town in the north of Malaga province, police sources confirmed to SUR. Initial reports that a woman had been killed have been denied and put down to a source’s error.
– A burst of gunfire caused panic mid-afternoon at around 2:25pm in the Avenida de la Estación in Antequera, when 112 Andalucía emergency service operators received calls from several eyewitnesses alerting them to the shots and requesting the presence of the medical services as several people had been injured in the shooting. UK

Russia Warns It Can Hit UK’s Military “Beyond” Ukraine Amid Nuclear Saber-Rattling:
– Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his armed forces to conduct tactical nuclear weapons drills in order for the country to be fully ‘ready’ to deter threats against it.
– A specific date for these nuclear drills has yet to be publicized, but importantly the Kremlin has made it clear that the order is directly in response to recent threatening comments by Western powers. For example both the US and UK have lately pledged to continue arming Ukraine “for as long as it takes” – and further British officials have openly stated that Ukraine may use UK-supplied weaponry to attack inside Russia if need be. There’s also the example of France’s Macron continually talking about being open to Western boots on the ground in defense of Ukraine.
– Russia’s foreign ministry in response promptly summoned UK Ambassador to Moscow Nigel Casey over the remarks. “Casey was warned that the response to Ukrainian strikes using British weapons on Russian territory could be any British military facilities and equipment on the territory of Ukraine and beyond,” the ministry stated after the meeting.
– Importantly, the Kremlin laid out that Cameron’s words mean he “de facto recognized his country as a party to the conflict.” This marks possibly the first time that the Russian government specifically threatened to attack British military installations and equipment within Ukraine and beyond. The foreign ministry statement further said this constitutes “evidence of a serious escalation and confirmation of London’s increasing involvement in military operations on the side of Kiev.” Ambassador Casey has been urged to “think about the inevitable catastrophic consequences of such hostile steps from London and to immediately refute in the most decisive and unequivocal manner the bellicose provocative statements of the head of the Foreign Office.” Full article: https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/russia-says-it-can-hit-uks-military-ukraine-and-beyond-putin-orders-tactical-nuke

MIDDLE EAST

Israel Says a Cease-Fire Plan Backed by Hamas Falls Far Short: [Updated 6 May 2024, 23:40 CEST]
– The Palestinian militant group Hamas said it had agreed to a cease-fire proposal for the Gaza Strip, but Israel’s war cabinet unanimously rejected it as “far from Israel’s necessary demands,” dashing hopes for an immediate pause in the fighting.
– Israel vowed to continue “its operation in Rafah {pic} to exert military pressure on Hamas” but also said it will send a delegation to meet with mediators “to exhaust the possibility of reaching an agreement.” In a statement later Monday, the Israel Defense Forces announced fresh airstrikes against Hamas targets in the Rafah area.
– The Israeli response followed hours after Hamas had posted a statement to Telegram saying that Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Hamas political office, had accepted a Qatari and Egyptian cease-fire proposal. Questions were raised almost immediately about the details, with both US and Israeli officials saying they were studying the Hamas response. HEALTH

European Commission in Brussels withdraws the marketing of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine from Europe: {Translation, summary}
– The withdrawal coincides with the lab recently admitting for the first time that the injection could cause side effects, such as thrombosis, in “very rare cases”. It did so in a document submitted to the British courts, as reported by The Telegraph, where a class action lawsuit is being brought against AstraZeneca over the effects of its vaccine.
– It is a lawsuit that includes the cases of 51 victims and their families who are claiming up to 100 million pounds in damages from the pharmaceutical company for the side effects of its vaccine. AstraZeneca does not acknowledge that its injection has caused harm, but admits that the vaccine “may, in very rare cases, cause thrombosis” (…but in their ultimate wisdom decided to conceal that from the public, denying us informed consent! Whoever made that decision should go to prison for a very long time. Unfortunately, accountability is a lost cause in a world driven by corporate greed. -Ed.) So you’ve lost weight using Wegovy. Does that mean you can stop taking it?:
– Millions of Americans who have dropped pounds and boosted their health using popular obesity drugs like Wegovy are facing a new dilemma: What happens if they stop taking them? Many worry that they’ll regain weight and revert to old habits. In studies, people who paused the drugs put back on most of the weight they lost. But others are gambling on a do-it-yourself strategy to ease off the drugs and stay slim by stretching out doses, taking the medication intermittently or stopping and starting again only if needed.
– More than 3 million prescriptions for the new medications are dispensed each month in the U.S., according to 2023 data from the health technology company IQVIA. They include semaglutide, the drug in Ozempic and Wegovy, and tirzepatide, the drug in Mounjaro and Zepbound.
– But many people don’t stick with it. One study published in the journal Obesity found that just 40% of patients who filled a prescription for Wegovy in 2021 or 2022 were still taking it a year later. Some people have been forced to ration or halt doses because the drugs are costly – $1,000 to $1,300 per month.
– Doctors who treat obesity stress that the disease is a chronic condition that must be managed indefinitely, like heart disease or high blood pressure. The new injection drugs work by mimicking hormones in the gut and the brain to regulate appetite and feelings of fullness. They were designed and tested to be used continuously, experts said.
– The drugs work by changing the way the body processes and stores energy. When people stop taking it, many gain back the weight they lost, plus more. And many report a return of symptoms of obesity such as so-called food noise or intrusive thoughts of food, raging hunger and decreased feelings of fullness when they eat. Some people who stop the drugs and start again have severe stomach side effects. Others find the drugs don’t work as well as before. There’s no data on the long-term effects of intermittent use, Saunders said. “I don’t think it’s a strategy that will work for most individuals, but it could be an option for select patients,” she said.
