ANDALUCÍA
These are the areas of Andalucia that expect rain this weekend, no rain projected for coast areas east of Nerja: {Translation}
– According to eltiempo.es forecasts, it could rain next Saturday and Sunday in the provinces of Cádiz, Córdoba, Málaga, Huelva, Granada, Almería and Jaén.
– The forecast indicates that Saturday, 11 May, will start with rain in the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga, which will last for most of the day. In Cádiz, the area affected will be the eastern area of the province, from Algeciras and La Línea de la Concepción to municipalities such as Setenil de las Bodegas. In Malaga, rain could occur in most of the interior of the province (with the exception of the coast) throughout the day and on Sunday, when it could also rain in the coastal municipalities, from Estepona to Nerja.
– From midday on Saturday, rain is also expected in the provinces of Huelva and Cordoba. Rainfall is expected in the northeast of the province of Huelva until the early hours of Sunday morning. In Cordoba, much of the interior of the province may be affected by rainfall during part of the afternoon.
– On Saturday afternoon it could also rain in Jaén. Forecasts indicate that much of the interior of the province will be affected, but that in principle it will not rain in the north, nor in municipalities such as Porcuna, Andújar, Bailén or Linares. On Sunday, rainfall is expected during the morning in the south of the province.
– On Sunday 12 the rains could also affect the province of Granada. Forecasts indicate that the areas affected will be in the western half of the province (except for the coast), including municipalities such as Loja, Montefrío and the capital itself. Although during the rest of the day, it could rain in much of the interior of the province. It could also rain in Almería. The rains could start in the early morning in the western half of the province and spread eastwards during the morning. However, one of the areas where no rain is expected is the east coast of Andalucia. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/andalucia/zonas-Andalucia-lluvia-fin-semana_0_1900610234.html
MALAGA PROVINCE
Malaga’s private swimming pools can be filled for this summer: {Translation}
– The swimming pools in the province of Malaga can be filled for this summer, without the need to modify the limits of consumption per inhabitant per day established until now, as agreed this Tuesday at a preparatory meeting of the drought committee, where the Board has exercised coordination. The authority to fill swimming pools is municipal but, at the request of the municipalities, the Board has acted as “coordinator” so that there are no significant differences between one town and another in the most touristic province of the community. With this decision, the filling of community and private swimming pools in the province will be allowed.
– A maximum limit of 400 m3 per hectare per month has also been agreed for the irrigation of gardens and the quantities for botanical species of greatest interest will be increased, Minister for Sustainability Ramón Fernández-Pacheco told a press conference after the Governing Council. He explained that the Junta has carried out “a work of cooperation” with the town councils so that there are no “profound disparities” between some municipalities and others.
– Fernández-Pacheco defended the “balance” that needs to be established between economic development, the important tourism sector and the “necessary” care for water.
He explained that he does not like the Junta to exercise “paternalism” over the local councils, but that if “this coordination measure” is proposed in a specific region, it is “positive”. MALAGA CITY
More Doctors Poisoned By Contaminated Hospital Food- Eight doctors on duty at Malaga Clinic with gastroenteritis after dining in the hospital cafeteria: {Translation, summary}
– A total of eight doctors at the Malaga Clinic suffered gastroenteritis on 6 May after eating the on-call menu offered in the centre’s cafeteria. The affected doctors, who were at work, developed acute symptoms after dining in the hospital canteen.
– The cases of gastroenteritis at the Clínico come weeks after 17 doctors also suffered from gastroenteritis after eating at the Regional Hospital, and 83 pupils at the Salvador Rueda secondary school suffered from similar symptoms. These earlier cases were investigated and it was announced that, in both cases, it was finally concluded that it was not food poisoning, but rather diarrhoea and vomiting caused by a virus. {They treat the public like morons. Silly semantics games to deflect responsibility are unacceptable. The virus was in the food, so it was food poisoning. 17 doctors who all suffered gastroenteritis the same day after eating did not catch a virus from sharing an infected toilet seat. -Ed.}

MOTRIL
The new Motril immigrant center delays its opening due to “security deficiencies”, among other excuses: {Translation, summary}
– The Ministry of the Interior has detected a series of security deficiencies in the facilities of the new Temporary Reception Centre for Foreigners (CATE) in Motril (Granada) which prevent its opening until they are corrected. These are deficiencies in electrical systems and in other parts of the facilities that will have to be corrected before the centre can be opened, for which there is no specific date.
– The Unified Police Union (SUP) regrets that it is still not known when this infrastructure, which “has been completed for nearly two years”, will be operational and points to the lack of personnel as one of the main obstacles to its opening. The secretary general of the SUP in Granada, César Calín, said that, unlike the current facilities which remain closed when there are no immigrants, the new CATE will require permanent police custody, but it has not yet been decided how this will be covered. “We are at a minimum, it is impossible to draw agents from other places,” he said.
– Thus, he considers it “significant” that the Government alludes to a “security problem” to justify a new delay in the opening of the facilities when it is a “new work that must be accompanied by all the security protocols” and has urged the revision of the Catalogue of Jobs to be adjusted to the population and real needs of Motril. “We have been like this for 30 years with a city that has grown a lot; before there were no ferries, nor the activity of the port, nor immigration had been shot as now,” says the secretary general of the SUP, who warns that the catalogue of jobs in Granada capital and Baza are also “obsolete”, so that there is a lack of staff and it is “impossible” to draw troops from other places to cover the new CATE.
– The Government delegate in Andalusia, Pedro Fernández, admitted last December the delay in the opening of this new centre, which he attributed to a series of “incidents” and “modifications” during the execution of the project, trusting that it would be up and running “soon”, since, he said, at that time it was only pending the installation of the computer systems. VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
Vélez-Málaga loses out on 9.2 million euros in funding for improvements to water supply: {Edited to remove grammar errors in the SUR translation}
– The town hall has lost its request for 9.2 million for water infrastructure, which was presented in the last months of the last legislature, by the previous bipartite team of the socialist PSOE party and the independent Torre del Mar GIPMTM party.
– Spain’s central government has rejected the application submitted by Vélez-Málaga town hall, sent in February 2023, as it did contained errors in the original documentation, and was never rectified as requested.
– According to the resolution of the central ministry for ecological transition, the reason for this rejection is because Vélez-Málaga town hall “did not present the documentation required”. The official document, which is signed by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, and dated 15 November 2023, says Vélez-Málaga did not include a number of documents required to go with the application.
– SUR has tried without success to get an answer from the current Vélez-Málaga bipartite team, made up of the centre-right Partido Popular (PP) and GIPMTM, on this matter asking the reasons why this documentation was not corrected in a timely fashion. Why were there so many drones flying over Spain’s Vélez-Málaga today (8/5)?:
– Drones, police dogs, the Tedax explosive device deactivation team, motorbikes, vans and patrol cars all participated in an exhibition by Spain’s National Police this Wednesday 8 May at Vélez-Málaga’s Fernando Ruiz Hierro football and athletics ground. The event formed part of the force’s 200th anniversary celebrations and some 3,500 schoolchildren from Vélez-Málaga and Benamocarra in the Axarquía on the eastern side of Malaga province enjoyed the shows. MARBELLA
Incompetence or Corruption? Justice takes 36 days to order the capture of the Mocro Maffia boss who fled thanks to a judicial error: {Translation, summary}
– Justice is beginning to do its job. But very slowly. 36 days after his escape thanks to several episodes of judicial dysfunction that are already being investigated by the CGPJ, the Court of Instruction number 4 of Marbella issued last Tuesday two search and arrest warrants for Karim Bouyakhrichan, the Mocro Maffia boss and the most wanted criminal in the Netherlands. He was arrested in January on the Costa del Sol, but who was surprisingly released in February and his whereabouts are unknown since his signature in a court of law on 1 April.
– The release and escape of this criminal boss has caused a commotion in Holland, where they celebrated the news of his capture, as the arrest of Bouyakhrichan, whose steps had been followed for five years, had become an obsession, especially after the Mocro Maffia had threatened to kill the heiress to the throne of that country, Princess Amalia of Orange.
– The bizarre sequence of events that led to the escape of the Maghrebi kingpin began on 10 January. As expected, the Marbella court of instruction number 4, which was on duty during his arrest, ordered Bouyakhrichan to be remanded in custody. The accusations on Spanish territory of heading a money laundering scheme more than justified the provisional detention.
– But that imprisonment lasted little more than a month. On 22 February, the First Section of the Malaga Provincial Court released the leader of the Mocro Maffia, with lax precautionary measures: the withdrawal of his passport, the obligation to appear in court every 15 days and the payment of a bail of 50,000 euros. After surrendering his passport at the Marbella court the day after his release, the mafia boss signed-in at courts outside Malaga on 1 and 15 March and 1 April. But after that, there is no record of him doing so again.
– This surprising release from prison on the appeal is even more inexplicable given that the Malaga Court took this decision with the opposition of the Anti-Drugs Prosecutor’s Office and in the knowledge that the Netherlands had already begun the process of obtaining his surrender. Ukraine electricity shortfall created by Russia’s massive missile and drone attack on energy facilities:
– The dispatch centre of Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s national energy company, is being forced to restrict energy supplies to industry and businesses between 18:00 and 23:00. This was announced on their Telegram page (see the post at https://t.me/Ukrenergo/2819).
– On 8 May, the Russians attacked power infrastructure facilities in six oblasts of Ukraine. Rolling blackouts may be introduced in the evening to limit electricity consumption.
– Ukrenergo emphasised that the scale of the restrictions would be evenly dispersed across all regions of Ukraine. The limits are due to an electricity shortfall created by Russia’s massive missile and drone attack on energy facilities. However, if evening usage continues to rise, Ukrenergo will be compelled to take drastic measures to balance the energy system, such as implementing emergency shutdowns for household consumers across Ukraine, the state company warned. PRODUCT ALERT
Health warns against eating CORBÍ brand pickles from Spain: {Translation}
– The products, which originate in Spain, specifically in Jaén, contain ingredients that are unsuitable for consumption. For this reason, the AESAN has requested the immediate withdrawal of the brand’s pickles.
– The analyses are said to have detected ingredients unfit for consumption, but the AESAN has not specified what they are, nor the possible health consequences they could have. According to the information provided, these pickles were initially distributed to the autonomous communities of Catalonia, Valencia, Cantabria, Madrid, Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, Murcia, Extremadura and Castile-La Mancha. However, the health agency does not rule out the possibility that it could have reached other parts of the peninsula.
– The most immediate recommendation is to watch out if you have any jars or buckets of pickles of the CORBÍ brand and to refrain from eating them. This alert also includes their cocktail of olives/pickles/onion, sweet peppers in olive oil and Jaén olives. First They Ban Multi-Serving Bottles Of Olive Oil From Cafe Tables, Now They Are Banning Individual Serving Condiment Packets!: {Translation}
– Europe is finally saying goodbye to single-use plastics – or at least many of them – to remedy the islands of rubbish in the ocean that are making the planet an increasingly uninhabitable place. The largest has 1.6 million square kilometres of rubbish, three times the size of France, according to the Aquae Foundation. And it is not the only one: there are known to be four others scattered across the world’s oceans.
– Now, the European Parliament’s aim with its new packaging regulation is to eliminate single-serve sachets from supermarkets, restaurants and hotels by 2030, reducing plastic packaging by 5% – rising to 15% by 2040.
– What packaging is banned? The new rule will ban individual packaging (e.g. for condiments, sauces, cream, sugar) or personal hygiene – such as mini shampoo pots in hotels – and prevent food containers from containing so-called “everlasting chemicals” (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFASs), among others.
– Thus, common products such as ketchup and mayonnaise sachets or coffee sugars will have to find a more sustainable alternative for packaging. In fact, the reuse of packaging will be encouraged, so, for example, “final distributors of drinks and take-away food will have to offer consumers the option of providing their own container at no extra cost”.
– {Simple solution is to ask for condiments when ordering, to be dispensed by the kitchen, in small washable cups, to arrive with your meal. Just as they serve chili sauce with your spring rolls now. Of course, some places will start charging for condiments at that point. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5243227/0/adios-los-azucarillos-los-sobres-ketchup-asi-es-nueva-normativa-union-europea-que-permite-los-clientes-llevar-su-propio-recipiente/
