Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

Diplomatic crisis deepens as Spain ‘definitively’ pulls out Argentina envoy:
– The diplomatic crisis between Argentina and Spain worsened on Tuesday as the European nation withdrew its ambassador from Buenos Aires – a move President Javier Milei described as “absurd.” Milei, 53, said Thursday that the decision to pull the envoy was a move “typical of an arrogant socialist,” again criticising Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
– Spain withdrew its ambassador to Argentina at the weekend after President Milei branded the Socialist premier’s wife as “corrupt” during a speech at a summit hosted by the Spanish far-right party Vox. Asked by the LN+ channel about whether Argentina would in turn withdraw its ambassador from Spain, Milei said: “No, not at all.” “This stains the international image of Spain and [shows] how arrogant they are, like believing that they are the State and that no-one can tell them anything,” said Milei.
– Milei arrived in Spain last Friday and there was immediate diplomatic friction as no meetings with Sánchez or King Felipe VI were organised during his stay. Argentina’s outspoken president then caused outrage with an attack on “satanic” socialism at the weekend at Vox’s Europa Viva 24 summit. “The global elites don’t realise how destructive it can be to implement the ideas of socialism,” Milei said last Sunday. “They don’t know the type of society and country that can produce, the type of people clinging to power and the level of abuse that generates.”
– He added: “When you have a corrupt wife, let’s say, it gets dirty, and you take five days to think about it.”
– Milei kept up his attacks against Sánchez when he returned to Buenos Aires on Monday, describing the Spanish premier as a “coward.” “I am in no way going to apologise to him,’ he said during an interview with the TN channel. “I’m the one who was attacked,” he added, recalling that representatives of the Spanish government had described him as “xenophobic, racist, ultra-right…a science denier, a misogynist.” “I think there should be several apologies from the Spanish government for the things they have said about President Milei,” Interior Minister Guillermo Francos told the press on Monday.
– In his comments Tuesday, Milei continued to attack the Spanish premier. He first declared that “Pedro Sánchez has an inferiority complex” and then recommended “a psychologist for him to mature and a good lawyer for Begoña because she already has a lot of cases where she is suspected of influence-peddling.”
– There has been weeks of rising diplomatic tensions between Spain and Argentina leading up to the latest spat.
Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente angered Buenos Aires by suggesting earlier this month that Milei was on drugs. Puente later said he had made a “mistake”, saying he was not aware of the repercussions his comments would have, and Buenos Aires said the dispute was “over.”

MALAGA CITY

Malaga City Council stops work on the immigrant centre in Churriana and opens a file on it: {Translation}
– The plans of the Spanish Commission for Refugee Assistance (CEAR) to open a care centre for immigrants in Churriana this June have hit a bump in the road: The Town Planning Commission (Urbanism) has opened a file on the work and is paralysing it while it studies whether the work can continue.
– In an appearance at the request of Vox in the Urbanism Commission, Carmen Casero, councillor for Urbanism, said that last Friday, after a second visit by the infringements technician following complaints from neighbours and police, he confirmed that the work did not correspond, at least not completely, with a responsible declaration, a procedure which had been used.
– Now, after opening a sanction file, he is studying whether the work can be legalised and has asked the promoter to justify what part of it would fit under the figure of a responsible declaration. In addition, Casero has asked the Subdelegación de Gobierno to inform “both the neighbours and the Town Hall” of its intentions, assuring that he was not aware of the CEAR’s intention until it was made public.
– Last Friday, the NGO’s coordinator in eastern Andalusia, Francisco Cansino, clarified that “there are still some details to be worked out”, which is why he did not consider it to be totally closed. “We are working on it and it is practically certain,” he added. But he specified that it would only be for the months of June and July.
– At present, CEAR has some 190 immigrants housed next to the Unamuno school, in Miraflores de El Palo, as part of the emergency reception programme due to the humanitarian crisis in the Canary Islands. But, as agreed at the time with the property, the organisation has to leave these facilities. For this reason, it is planning to move to a residence run by nuns in the El Olivar housing estate in Churriana, an initiative that has been rejected by local residents.
– The humanitarian shelter is part of the same programme that once led the Red Cross to house immigrants in Torrox who also came from the Canary Islands. Regarding neighbourhood opposition to the move, the CEAR representative said: “We understand some concern, but it is misguided. We cannot turn our backs on the reality of migration, nor relate it to violence or delinquency”. In fact, he insisted that they have to leave the Miraflores de El Palo facilities not because there has been any problem, but because that was the agreement reached at the time with the owner.
– In these facilities, the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration authorised 250 places, although this number was never filled. At present, there are about 190 immigrants. In Churriana, the number of places would be lower. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/Ayuntamiento-Malaga-para-obras-centro-extranjeros-Churriana_0_1904511035.html

It’s official, the cost of water in Malaga will begin to rise in the next bill- these are the amounts: {Translation, summary}
– It is now official with the publication in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP). After several months of debates, formalities and allegations, the water bill will be active in five days and will start to rise in Malaga city from the next bill. It is a partial increase, as for the moment it only affects the sanitation and purification components. The increase will be completed in the summer, when the Junta de Andalucía gives the go-ahead for the new supply tariffs.
– Emasa has had its prices frozen for eight years and justifies this increase on the need to meet costs that have shot up by 29% (energy and supplies among them), actions to deal with the drought, renovation and new infrastructures and the new services it has to provide (grafts, drainage and scuppers). The increase will be progressive and over five years. It will reach 32% this year. An average family will pay 9.58 euros more per bill, to which they will have to add about 4 euros for the autonomous canon and VAT, more than 14 euros in total. NERJA

Arrested for raping two men under chemical submission in Nerja: {Translation, summary}
– Agents of the Guardia Civil have arrested a man in Nerja as the alleged perpetrator of two crimes of sexual assault under chemical submission. His modus operandi, according to investigators, consisted of introducing substances such as MDMA and methadone into the drinks of the victims, aged between 27 and 34, to override their will and thus perpetrate the rapes. The judicial authority has ordered him to be remanded in prison.
– According to the Guardia Civil, the alleged perpetrator gained the trust of the victims after a first contact, which took place through social networks. He then invited them to his home. According to the allegations, the victims had ingested a drink offered by the detainee, after which they began to feel symptoms of indisposition such as nausea, dizziness, vomiting and even unconsciousness. They barely remembered what had happened.
– After identifying the perpetrator, a foreign national of similar age to the victims and resident in the town of Nerja, the agents proceeded to locate and arrest him at the end of April. Due to an ongoing investigation, details are only now being released. GRANADA

Five arrested for the robbery of a house, where the victim was held at gunpoint and tied up: {Translation}
– Three men and two women aged between 19 and 52, all Spanish, have been arrested in Alicante and Zújar (Granada) for their alleged connection with the robbery of a house in a rural area of the province of Alicante, where the victim was held at gunpoint and tied to a chair with flanges.
– According to the National Police, the house was entered by two hooded men armed with a shotgun and a knife to tie up the owner, aged 66 and also Spanish, while they searched the house for burglary items.
– According to the victim, while one of them pointed a gun at his chest, the other threatened him with a knife while shouting “where is the money?”, and when he replied that the only thing he had was what was in his wallet, they tied him hand and foot to a chair with bridles.
– The loot taken was just 120 euros in cash, documents and bank cards, a mobile phone and 15 carafes of extra virgin olive oil, as well as a shotgun with cartridges. Before fleeing, the assailants threatened to burn down the victim’s house if he reported the incident.
– After a period of time that the victim was unable to determine, he managed to untie himself and left the house in a hurry, thinking that his captors were still on the farm, so he jumped over the farm’s gate and fled to a nearby mountain to hide.
– Hours later, when the victim saw the possibility that the danger had passed, he came out of hiding and went to the house. As he had no way of contacting anyone for help, since the criminals had taken his phone, he walked along the road until he came across a lorry driver whom he asked to call the National Police.
– During the investigation it was discovered that the perpetrators of the robbery had tried unsuccessfully to use the victim’s credit cards at various ATMs in the city.
– Finally, two men and two women were arrested in Alicante and a fifth in the town of Zújar in Granada, who was located in the vicinity of the local bus station. In the house searches carried out, both the firearm used by the assailants and owned by the victim, and the knife allegedly used, a knife over 30 centimetres long, were found. The arrestees are charged with the crimes of robbery with violence and intimidation in an inhabited house, burglary in an inhabited house, illegal detention, illegal possession of a prohibited weapon, fraud and misappropriation. UK

Julian Assange wins right to appeal against extradition to US:
– Julian Assange has been granted leave to mount a fresh appeal against his extradition to the US on charges of leaking military secrets and will be able to challenge assurances from American officials on how a trial there would be conducted.
– The judges accepted there was an arguable case that he could be discriminated against, after being told that a US prosecutor had said the first amendment may not apply to foreigners when it came to national security issues. Assange was not in court for health reasons, his legal team said, but those present included his wife, Stella, and his father, John Shipton. HEALTH

Yet Another Andalucian Health Service (SAS) Malpractice Award- €112,500 compensation to a patient for taking two years to diagnose her with lung cancer: {Translation, summary}
– The second administrative court in Seville has recognised the right of a patient to be compensated 112,500 euros by the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) for “a delay of about two years” by the Valme hospital in diagnosing the lung cancer from which she was suffering. In a ruling issued on 23 January, the body dealt with an appeal by a woman against the SAS’s decision to reject her claim for financial liability for damages arising from “defective healthcare” and “negligence”.
– The woman, represented by the lawyer María Jesús Villapando of El Defensor del Paciente, claimed half a million euros in compensation for this delay, stating that “there was a delay in the diagnostic tests and treatment of the disease as more than two years had passed until the diagnosis of adenocarcenoma of the lung”.
– To prove this, she presented two expert reports from an oncologist and a doctor. Both concluded that there had been “a delay in diagnosis as her condition had not been adequately treated, and a more conclusive imaging test, such as a CAT scan, should have been carried out”.
– After analysing the case, the Court stated that the delay was proven even when “the X-rays of March and May 2018 already reflected findings that were not properly refined by imaging techniques, which meant a delay in the diagnosis of lung cancer for about two years”. “It has become clear that since May 2018, the patient had to be studied through the prescription of a CAT scan that was not done until 20 January 2020, which is deprivation in the possibilities of cure and treatment for her ailment with improvement of her quality of life,” the court stated. “Such a circumstance cannot be ignored when setting compensation, because in cases of loss of opportunity, compensation is not being paid for the damage caused, but for the uncertainty created about the chances of survival or the course the disease would have taken if it had been detected earlier,” the court said.
