SPAIN

Consumer Affairs investigates tourist rental websites to trace advertising of unlicensed apartments: {Translation, summary}
– The Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030 has opened an investigation into potential unfair commercial practices in relation to tourist homes that operate without a license and that are advertised throughout Spain on platforms intended for tourist rentals. Fines could reach 100,000 euros.
– According to the official information offered by regional and municipal authorities with jurisdiction in this area, a significant number of tourist homes would be operating without a license, which is why the Ministry led by Pablo Bustinduy has decided to launch this investigation in order to protect the consumers and users in the face of these practices.
– The General Directorate of Consumption has sent requests to the main tourist rental platforms to obtain information about the vacation rentals that are advertised, placing special emphasis on the activity and responsibility of those large landlords or companies.
– With the information collected through these requirements, the General Directorate of Consumer Affairs will study the possibility of opening disciplinary proceedings for these practices that, according to legal provisions, can be classified as serious infractions with fines of up to 100,000 euros, or an amount of between four and six times the illicit benefit obtained. ANDALUCÍA

Andalusia has recorded 1,853 cases of whooping cough so far this year, 390% more than in all of 2023: {Translation, summary}
– The Health Department wanted to send a message of “calm” to the public, given that the percentage of hospital admissions in Andalusia is “minimal” and no deaths have been recorded either in 2023 or in the first months of 2024. The Ministry explains that whooping cough acts “in waves and now, at a national level, we are in one of them”.
– The majority of cases, the same sources detail, occur in babies between three and eleven months old. However, of the few admissions there have been, the majority have been infants under four months old.
– In terms of the total number of cases registered in Andalusia this year, Granada stands out as the province with the highest number of cases (875), followed by Seville (357), Malaga (140), Jaen (131), Cadiz (122), Almeria (113), Huelva (117) and Cordoba (8).
– Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection caused by bordetella pertussis that affects the upper respiratory tract and is characterised by a catarrhal onset followed by a prolonged cough, as defined by the Advisory Committee on Vaccines and Immunisations of the Spanish Association of Paediatrics (CAV-AEP). RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA

Hooded armed men tie up & beat businessman and his family in Rincón, flee with 100,000 euros: {Translation, summary}
– A family was robbed in their villa in Rincón de la Victoria. A married couple and their son have allegedly been robbed by a group of armed hooded men, who held them under threat until they achieved their goal: to escape with a succulent haul of 100,000 euros in cash, luxury watches and numerous jewels. The victim is a well-known businessman in the municipality.
– The events took place last night in a house in the Cotomar urbanisation. Three men with their faces covered and wearing gloves broke into the house. They did so with firearms which, according to the initial investigations, are believed to be genuine. The assailants even used zip-ties to restrain the residents: the businessman – who was the target under surveillance – his partner, and his adult son.
– During the assault, the perpetrators forced, under threat, the owners of the house to open the safe. They had been beaten, according to the testimony which they provided to the investigators. The worst part was borne by the father, who was also assaulted on the head. The father managed to free himself and was able to loosen the restraints. He then called the Guardia Civil for help. Fortunately, the nightmare was over. A large police force arrived at the house where the assault had been carried out. After the incident, the victims had to receive medical assistance.
– In addition to the three robbers directly involved in the robbery, investigators suspect that at least two other assailants were waiting outside the property to facilitate the escape and support the others.
– The case is now in the hands of the Guardia Civil Judicial Police, who are searching for the violent gang of assailants. Sources close to the case highlight the professionalism with which they acted. “They were very well prepared and were in good communication with those waiting outside”, they stress. EUROPE

Ukraine Strikes Into Russia With Western Weapons, Official Says:
– Just days after the Biden administration granted permission for Ukraine to fire American weapons into Russia, Kyiv took advantage of its new latitude, striking a military facility over the border using a U.S.-made artillery system, according to a member of Ukraine’s Parliament.
– Yehor Chernev, the deputy chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament’s committee on national security, defense and intelligence, said on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces had destroyed Russian missile launchers with a strike in the Belgorod region, about 20 miles into Russia. Ukraine’s forces used a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, he said. It was the first time a Ukrainian official has acknowledged publicly that Ukraine had used American weapons to fire into Russia since President Biden lifted the ban on such strikes. For months, the ban had stood as a red line the Biden administration would not cross out of concern about increasing tensions with a nuclear-armed nation. NATO maps out plan to block Russian invasion:
– NATO is developing multiple “land corridors” to rush US troops and armour to the front lines in the event of a major European ground war with Russia.
– American soldiers would land at one of five ports and be channelled along pre-planned logistical routes to confront a possible attack by Moscow, officials told The Telegraph.
– It comes amid warnings from the Alliance’s top leaders that Western governments must prepare themselves for a conflict with Russia in the next two decades.
– Logistical routes have become a key priority since NATO leaders agreed to prepare 300,000 troops to be kept in a state of high readiness to defend the alliance at a summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, last year.
– Existing plans have US troops landing at Dutch ports before boarding trains that transport them through Germany and onwards to Poland.
– If NATO forces entering from the Netherlands are hit by Russian bombardment, or northern European ports destroyed, the alliance is set to shift focus to ports in Italy, Greece and Turkey. From Italian ports, US troops could be carried via land through Slovenia, Croatia to Hungary, which shares a border with Ukraine. Similar plans exist to transport forces from Turkish and Greek ports through Bulgaria and Romania to reach the alliance’s eastern flank. Banknotes bearing portrait of King Charles III start to be rolled out across the UK:
– People have been queuing Wednesday outside the Bank of England’s headquarters in London and at post offices around the U.K. to get their hands on the first U.K. banknotes featuring the portrait of King Charles III.
– The portrait of the king will appear on all four banknotes issued by the Bank of England – 5, 10, 20 and 50 pounds – with no other alterations to the existing designs. The notes will coexist alongside those featuring his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, whom he succeeded as monarch on her death in September 2022. TECH

What is Wi-Fi calling?:
– Wi-Fi calling allows your phone to make and receive calls using a Wi-Fi connection instead of a cellular network. When you make a Wi-Fi call, your phone transmits data packets over the internet via Wi-Fi, similar to how it does with cellular calls. This can be your home Wi-Fi or a hotspot, like at a café or library. While Wi-Fi calling works great at home, it can be less reliable in public. With many people sharing the same network, your call quality might drop as your phone competes for bandwidth. If you have no cell signal, but have wifi access, this works.
– Wi-Fi calling feels like any other phone call. You dial a regular phone number. The person you’re calling doesn’t need to be on Wi-Fi. They can be on a cellular network. When your call goes via the internet, it’s passed to the cellular network and the person you’re calling.
– Carrier-branded Wi-Fi calling is built into your phone’s dialer, so you don’t need to open (or install) an app or connect to a service. It can be set as the default calling method, automatically switching to Wi-Fi calling if the cellular signal is lost. With this built-in feature, you don’t need to add contacts. You can use the existing phone book, and friends can receive Wi-Fi calls without downloading additional applications.

Yet Another Spanish Corporation Gets Hacked, tries to hides it- Ayesa cyber attack results in its staff data being posted on the ‘dark web’: {Translation, summary}
– What happened is that Black Basta, the cybercriminal group that claimed responsibility for the attack, published a sample of the stolen data, 35 IDs and passports of Ayesa workers, to show that they were serious. “Then Ayesa called us to acknowledge that only 35 workers affected by the incident,” says Marín, chairman of the works council of its Seville office. “Their strategy has been to deny the truth for a month, claiming that they don’t know what has been stolen so as not to report it… until Black Basta published all the documentation. We believe that the details of all the workers with their IDs are there,” he laments. Ayesa has some 13,000 workers in 23 countries. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

Meta (owner of Fakebook/WhatsApp/Instagram) will soon use your public posts to train its AI. Can you prevent it?:
– A new message appeared for European users of Instagram and Facebook mobile applications this month, informing them that their public posts could be used to train artificial intelligence (AI) from June 26. The information used could include posts, photos, captions and messages sent to an AI but not the content of private messages, Instagram’s help centre said.
– Parent company Meta said in a statement last week that they would begin notifying people in the UK and EU about how they will use “public information they have shared on Meta’s products and services to develop and improve AI at Meta within their respective privacy laws”.
– It is possible {in some cases} to opt-out of having your data used this way by filing a form with Facebook – which is currently unavailable – or Instagram. “We’ll review objection requests in accordance with relevant data protection laws. If your request is honoured, it will be applied going forward,” the forms stated.
– Despite the possibility of opting out, your data could still be used by Meta if you appear in an image someone shared or are mentioned in another user’s posts or captions. The tech company also advised the DPC that “only that personal data (posts not comments) shared by users based in the EU to a public audience on Instagram and Facebook at the time of training will be used and that this will not include personal data from accounts belonging to users under 18”.
– Is this GDPR compliant? A company or an organisation can process personal data when it has grounds of “legitimate interest,” according to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Meta mentioned this legal basis, adding the data would be used “to develop and improve AI. CULTURAL REVOLUTION

Colonized- An Andalucian’s Perspective, by Francisco Palacios:
{opinion article from andaluciainformacion.es}
– The reality is palpable, evident and becomes more visible with each passing moment. It was not enough for them to consider us an internal colony, after losing, one after another, the transoceanic colonies. It was not enough for them to appropriate all our signs of identity in order to build an imaginary of the Spanish, based on the Andalusian, uprooting, denaturalising and stealing whatever is ours to make it theirs. No, they had to go a step further.
– After destroying and laminating Andalusian industry, lest we consider ourselves capable of becoming economically self-sufficient, after dismantling, stone by stone, our industrial fabric, to demolish it or transfer it to other latitudes, they left us with the only solution of putting everything at the disposal of the visitor, whether it be human capital or the land on which we survive. All the measures taken from the headquarters of the centralist parties are aimed at preventing us from leaving the role they forced us to assume.
– But that is not enough for them. It is not enough for them that we have to leave our cities, that we allow our home to be indistinguishable from that of a German or a Frenchman, that we are expelled, visitors in our own land, strangers in your home, foreigners in your cradle. We had to go further.
– They had the happy idea that the older people in the villages should be taught English. Because the visitor cannot make the minimum effort that we all make when we travel abroad. No. The Andalusian, who is criticized for his speech and accent, who is associated with the poor and the simple, simply because of the way he speaks, now has to loosen his belt a little more and genuflect, to the greater glory of the tourist.
– Leave your house for a Frenchman to rent, close your business to open an Irish pub, and learn English to make a son of Britain feel at home. All with the acquiescence of a Junta de Andalucía and town councils that only look out for the benefit of the visitor, that despise what they should defend, that ally themselves with the new señorito, who has exchanged our latifundium* for the dólares of vulture funds. Then you will say that you do not need an Andalusian voice in each and every one of the institutions. You will protest, you will complain and you will rage. But in perfect English.
