EU ELECTIONS 2024

Seats by political group- Spain Provisional results:
PP 34.18%
PSOE 30.19%
VOX 9.62%
Ahora Repúblicas  (ERC, Bildu, BNG, Ara Més, etc) 4.93%
SUMAR 4.65%
Source: https://results.elections.europa.eu/en/spain/

************

Projections of the results, the final exit polls are in:
– With polls now closed for European elections, it’s becoming clear who the winners and losers are across the EU’s 27 Member States.
– Italy’s leader Giorgia Meloni has cemented her role as a key Brussels power broker with an estimated 26-30% of the votes.
– In France, President Emmanuel Macron has performed so badly he’s been pushed to call snap elections; projections suggest the far-right National Rally (RN) party, has secured a whopping 31.5% of the votes – more than twice the number gained by Macron.
– In Germany, the Christian-Democrat CDU and CSU party is projected to get just about 30% of the vote, similar to 29% in 2019, followed by the far-right Alternative for Germany in second place with 16.5%, up from 11% in 2019. The Social-Democrats of Chancellor Olaf Scholz are following with 14%, and the Greens with 12%. Turnout is at 64%.
– In Austria the far-right FPÖ is predicted to top the poll, doubling its number of MEPs to six after gaining 27% of votes.
– In the Netherlands, voting took place on Thursday – and its exit poll suggests Geert Wilders’ PVV party will scoop seven seats – confirming a swing towards eurosceptic right-wing parties predicted by previous polling.
– Those rightward trends are confirmed in Spain, where Vox is expected to increase its representation by two to three MEPs, while newcomers “The Party Is Over”, also identified as far-right populist, will gain their first ever two or three MEPs, exit polls suggest.
– A first estimate of election results produced by the European Parliament suggests the Green and liberal Renew parties each losing around 20 MEPs each, potentially endangering the pro-European majority needed to back top officials and support EU laws. The second projection, produced after all polls closed, shows the Green party taking just 52 MEPs, compared to 72 in March 2024. Environmentalists who call for an end to hunting now complain that wild boars kill protected birds in Doñana: {Translation, summary}
– Ecologists in Action and SEO/BirdLife, two environmental associations calling for an end to hunting, have denounced that wild boars are endangering two species of birds in Doñana, the common moorhen and the purple heron. In one week alone, wild boars have devoured about a thousand eggs and newly hatched chicks of these birds.
– “The 300 common moorhen nests and 70 purple heron nests on reeds in the Cerrado Garrido pike in Doñana, with around 1,000 chicks and eggs, have been almost entirely devoured by wild boars. Only 10% of the pairs of these species, 30 pairs of black-crowned night herons and 10 pairs of purple herons, have been able to keep their nests in this wetland area close to the ground, among the bulrushes, against predators which, in a couple of weeks, have gained access to them due to the lack of effectiveness of the netting that was supposed to protect the colonies”.
– The nature associations denounce that “the wild boars have also had a negative impact on other protected birds that breed on the ground in large areas of the natural marshland of the National Park. Thus, they have depredated almost all the eggs and chicks of white-faced curlew, black-billed curlew, black-billed gull and stilt, among others”.
– Instead of proposing a reasonable conservation plan for all species, which means resorting to hunting to limit uncontrolled wild boar populations, both associations consider that the blame for everything lies with a mesh installed to try to curb attacks: “It is ineffective, being permeable to opportunistic predators and, therefore, does not protect”. For this reason, they demand that the administrations implement “the necessary measures to ensure the conservation” of Doñana, but not by reducing wild boar populations using scientific criteria, but through “an active management plan for the control, surveillance and maintenance of bird populations”, i.e. by improving the mesh. {Yeah, like some mesh is gonna stop a pack of hungry 250kg jabalíes. They will tear thru it, go over it, go under it, and may well eat it as an appetizer. -Ed.}

– An exception is the Colada reservoir in El Viso {pic} where bathing is prohibited due to the presence of cyanobacteria, a potentially toxic threat to health.
– These reports on the health quality of the waters, which indicates their suitability and, where appropriate, provides information on recommendations or bans on bathing, will be issued periodically every fortnight throughout the summer season. These will be available for public consultation on the website of the Regional Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs until the end of the bathing season on 30 September. Here is the link. GRANADA

Granada’s Costa Tropical sees prices rocket to become one of most expensive holiday destinations in Andalucía:
– Renting an apartment for a week this summer on the Granada coast is between seven and 12 per cent more expensive than in 2023. The price range for a holiday on the province’s Costa Tropical varies from 1,500 euros a week for an apartment in the Playa Granada area in Motril or in the Salomar area of Salobrena, to 900 euros a week on Cambriles beach in Castell de Ferro.
– Motril is the most expensive town on the Granada coast and is the seventh most expensive destination in Andalucía behind areas in Marbella including Puerto Banús, and Cádiz, according to the latest report by Tecnitasa, a valuation and consultancy company which has a number of offices in Spain.
– Playa Granada has undergone a significant change in recent years. Renting a 90-metre-square apartment for seven days in summer cost an average of 700 euros four years ago and now stands at 1,500 euros, while Playa de Poniente has now reached 1,350 euros, 850 euros more expensive than in 2020 and 100 above the average price set last summer.
– During the pandemic the Costa Tropical was the cheapest holiday destination in Andalucía. Nowadays the scenario is completely different, although the price increase is reflected in all coastal towns in Spain. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/andalucia/costa-tropical/motril-one-the-most-expensive-holiday-destinations-20240607080212-nt.html

EUROPE

First Victim Of The EU Elections, Before The Polling Stations Close- Macron dissolves the French National Assembly and calls snap elections after the victory of the far right:
– In elections to the European Parliament, Marine le Pen’s National Rally party won about 32% of the vote – a 10 point increase on the last EU election in 2019. It is also more than double the 15% taken by Mr. Macron’s Renaissance party, according to exit polls.
– Mr. Macron {pic} said he could not “pretend nothing had happened” and admitted the EU election was “no good” for his government. The “rise of nationalists” is a danger to France and to Europe, he said.
– Speaking at the Elysee Palace, Mr. Macron said: “I’ve decided to give you back the choice of our parliamentary future through the vote. “I am therefore dissolving the National Assembly.” There will be two rounds of voting on 30 June and 7 July, he added.
– Ms. Le Pen said her party was “ready to take over power if the French give us their trust in the upcoming national elections”. Full article: https://news.sky.com/story/president-emmanuel-macron-dissolves-french-national-assembly-and-calls-for-snap-election-13150407

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo announces resignation:
– Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo announced plans to resign after the defeat of his party, the liberal Open VLD, in the federal elections held June 9. Belgium held a national vote on the 150 legislative seats in the Chamber of Representatives on June 9, the same day as its European parliamentary elections. “Tomorrow I will resign as prime minister,” de Croo said, with 90% of the votes counted.
– The conservative party N-VA led the vote, with a projected win of 24 seats in the Chamber of Representatives. The far-right Vlaams Belang party is projected to win 20. In third place, the liberal Mouvement Reformateur (MR) party is projected to take 19 seats. N-VA’s victory appears to have staved off a takeover by Vlaams Belang, a Flemish nationalist party that aims to break up Belgium into two countries.
– Over the next months, the parties will enter talks to form a governing coalition. Despite the heavy defeat handed to De Croo’s party, he expressed hope for future elections. Full article: https://www.yahoo.com/news/belgian-prime-minister-alexander-croo-214407418.html

Aid of one thousand euros to the self-employed to buy computers: {Translation, summary}
– The digitalization of companies is one of the great objectives that Spain’s Government set for the European Next Generation funds. Now, after a recent regulatory change at the state level, the more than three million self-employed and small business owners in the country will be able to request public aid of one thousand euros to purchase computers for their businesses.
– The aid will be available to all small business owners and self-employed workers in any professional sector who meet the conditions established in the bases of the call. Thus, the main requirement is to have been registered as self-employed for a minimum of six months. Although other aspects will also be taken into account, such as the size of the company and its financial limits. For their part, all beneficiaries who have purchased this ‘gift’ must pay VAT on the purchased product.
– To order the respective electronic devices, you must register on the website and complete a self-diagnosis test. This questionnaire is carried out so that the administration knows the level of digitalization of the company or self-employed person and advises them according to their needs.
– Through the catalog of digital solutions, beneficiaries will be able to choose various products offered by digitizing agents. After choosing the laptop or computer, you proceed to request help at the Red.es electronic headquarters website by completing all the steps in the form. Backlash Against Microsoft’s New AI Spyware- Microsoft Revamps Controversial AI-Powered “Recall” Feature Amid Privacy Concerns:
– Microsoft on Friday said it will disable its much-criticized artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Recall feature by default and make it an opt-in.
– Recall, currently in preview and coming exclusively to Copilot+ PCs on June 18, 2024, functions as an “explorable visual timeline” by capturing screenshots of what appears on users’ screens every five seconds, which are subsequently analyzed and parsed to surface relevant information.
– But the feature, meant to serve as some sort of an AI-enabled photographic memory, was met with instantaneous backlash from the security and privacy community, which excoriated the company for having not thought through enough and implementing adequate safeguards that could prevent malicious actors from easily gaining a window into a victim’s digital life. The recorded information could include screenshots of documents, emails, or messages containing sensitive details that may have been deleted or shared temporarily using disappearing or self-destructing formats popular on instant messaging platforms.
– WIRED’s Andy Greenberg called Recall an “unrequested, pre-installed spyware built into new Windows computers.” Windows Central reported that Microsoft was “overly secretive” about Windows Recall during development and chose not to test it publicly.
– In an effort to counter the mounting barrage of criticism, Microsoft said users are now in complete control of the entire Recall experience and instituted a new setup process to enable it, giving users a choice to entirely opt out of periodically saving screenshots using Recall. The security changes also require users to enroll for Windows Hello biometric scanning to enable Recall, with proof of user rights necessary in order to view the timeline and perform searches. TRAVEL

Warning as carry-on rules revised at 6 UK airports:
– Restrictions on carrying liquids over 100ml in hand luggage are being temporarily reintroduced at some regional airports in the UK. The change will apply from 00:01 BST on Sunday 9 June 2024 and will affect passengers at Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, London City, Aberdeen, Southend and Teesside airports.
– All of the airports affected have Next Generation Security Checkpoints (NGSC) in full operation and had scrapped the 100ml liquid rules after introducing the high-tech CT scanners. The Department for Transport said reintroducing restrictions would “enable further improvements to be made to the new checkpoint systems” and was not in response to a specific threat.
– Bristol Airport was scheduled to scrap the 100ml limit on liquids being allowed in carry-on baggage from 14 June. However, that will now be delayed. “There remains a 100ml max rule for each liquid taken in hand luggage,” said a spokesperson for Bristol Airport.
– Most UK airports, including London Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester, still have the restrictions on liquids in place as their new scanners are not yet in place.
– The six smaller airports affected warned passengers to pack liquids into hold luggage wherever possible to avoid delays going through security. Liquids, including aerosols and gels, carried in hand luggage should not exceed 100ml.
