Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

Judge Peinado extends the investigation of Begoña Gómez to the Complutense University: {Translation, summary}
– The head of the 41st Court of Instruction of Madrid, Juan Carlos Peinado, has extended the investigation of the wife of the President of the Government Begoña Gómez to the Complutense University of Madrid.
– Judge Peinado would like to clarify the appointment of Begoña Gómez as director of the Extraordinary Chair for Competitive Social Transformation and to find out why Pedro Sánchez’s wife registered in her name the sustainability platform developed for the Complutense University by Telefónica, Indra and Google, which was finalised with a public contract of 60,000 euros.
– The magistrate has agreed to these proceedings after clarifying that his court is still investigating “two (of the three) blocks” that are not related to the contracts awarded to companies belonging to the businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés, part of which was taken over by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
– He was responding to the request of Gómez’s defence, led by former minister Antonio Camacho, who asked Peinado to clarify again which facts make up the case after the magistrate agreed to the request of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office to take over the part of the case relating to the awarding of contracts financed with European funds by the public entity Red.es. ANDALUCÍA

The Junta de Andalucía considers the amnesty law an outrage and insists on the appeal: {Translation, summary}
– The Minister of the Presidency, Antonio Sanz {pic}, has stressed that the Andalusian Regional Government “will not stand idly by” in the face of the “immense outrage” that, in his opinion, the Government of Pedro Sánchez has committed by promoting the amnesty law for those accused of the Catalan independence process.
– This was stated by the minister in response to a question from Vox deputy Benito Morillo in a parliamentary committee appearance in which, regarding the aforementioned amnesty law promoted by the PSOE in the Congress of Deputies, Antonio Sanz stressed that the Andalusian Government of the PP-A “is very clear” that “the equality of all Andalusians and Spaniards cannot be a bargaining chip or form part of any negotiation”. For this reason, he continued, the Andalusian Governing Council has given “the relevant instructions” and will lodge “the corresponding appeal for unconstitutionality before the Constitutional Court within three months, as the law allows us to do”.
– Antonio Sanz has denounced that “the amnesty that the President of the Government and Secretary General of the PSOE, Pedro Sánchez, so much disowned”, but which he later approved “in order to remain in the Moncloa, destroys the most elementary principles of the rule of law and the separation of powers”. “It is simply unheard of that all the crimes for which the leaders of the procés were condemned by the justice system have not only been pardoned, but that, in addition, it is recognised that they never existed”, denounced the Minister of the Presidency, adding that “the response to such a legal outrage must be calm, but very forceful, and this is what we are going to do from the Andalusian Government”.
– Along these lines, the minister argued that “there is no shortage” of reasons to appeal the amnesty law before the TC, because “it violates the principle of separation of powers, the right of Spaniards to equality before the law, the constitutional principle of legal certainty, the right to effective judicial authority and the prohibition of arbitrariness of the public authorities”.
– Thus, Antonio Sanz has asserted that “the application of this law would mean the breakdown forever of the rule of law” in Spain, and has criticised the Andalusian PSOE deputies who have voted in favour of this law before which the Andalusian Government “will not stand idly by”, as the Minister reiterated before concluding by stating that “the equality of Spaniards and Andalusians is not negotiable, and will remain so for the Government of Juanma Moreno”.

MALAGA PROVINCE

Farmers fear the plague of locusts, grasshoppers and crickets detected in Malaga province:
– A plague of locusts, grasshoppers and crickets are causing havoc in three municipalities in Malaga province, agriculturalists have warned.
– Asaja Malaga, the province’s agricultural association of young farmers, raised the alarm on Monday 17 June that large infestations of the insects are located in Coín, Alozaina and Casarabonela. This new infestation has already spread over an area of just over 400 hectares, “affecting both agricultural and natural areas in the region”, they warned.
– The Junta recommends that in areas where there are, for example, a significant locust population, no work should be carried out on fruit trees that involves wounding them as locusts are attracted by the smell of sap.
– To report the presence of locusts, grasshoppers and crickets, farmers can contact the Plant Health Services of the Junta de Andalucía’s regional ministry of agriculture by phone on 951920482 and 671533402. NERJA

Young man dies after falling from cliff on popular Nerja beach:
– A young Turkish man of 27 years and student of the Malaga University (UMA) died on Wednesday evening after falling from a cliff in Nerja, according to 112 Andalucía.
– At 7:15pm, the 112 emergency service telephone operators received a call alerting them to a young man falling from a cliff on the Carabeo beach and requesting urgent medical assistance because he had suffered a severe blow to the head.
– According to a statement from the Junta, the emergency services could do nothing to save the life of the victim, a 27-year-old man, who died at the scene despite receiving medical assistance. LANJARÓN

The Lanjarón fire has been controlled, which Infoca is trying to extinguish with land means: {Translation, summary}
– The forest fire broke out at 21.00 hours on Tuesday in the municipality of Lanjarón (Granada). The causes are still unknown, according to Infoca.
– At the stroke of midnight on Tuesday, the Andalusian Forest Fire Fighting Service, Plan Infoca, managed to control a complicated forest fire that broke out at around 21.00 hours in the Granada municipality of Lanjarón.
– The strong wind – over 30 km/h – and the onset of darkness made it difficult to control the flames. Initially, a deployment of ground and air resources was set up and worked flat out to try to halt the advance of the fire. Two medium-heavy helicopters, two cargo planes on the ground and a third for coordination work were in action from the early hours of the morning, although given the time the fire broke out, they were soon withdrawn.
– Up to 40 personnel, specifically a group of forest firefighters, an environmental agent and a fire engine, were in charge of finishing off and liquidating the tasks. Dutch PM Mark Rutte set to become new NATO chief:
– Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has withdrawn his bid for NATO’s leadership, clearing the way for Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to become the alliance’s secretary-general.
– A staunch backer of Ukraine, the 57-year-old Rutte staked his claim for the job last year after the collapse of his coalition in the Netherlands. He quickly gained the support of NATO heavyweights the United States, Britain, France, and Germany. Full article: https://www.dw.com/en/dutch-pm-mark-rutte-set-to-become-new-nato-chief/a-69427909

Russia obliterates Ukraine’s frontline towns faster with hacked bombs and expanded airbase network:
– The first shock wave shattered aisles stacked almost to the ceiling with home improvement products. The next Russian bomb streaked down like a comet seconds later, unleashing flames that left the megastore an ashen shell.
– A third bomb failed to detonate when it landed behind the Epicenter shopping complex in Kharkiv {pic}. Investigators hope it will help them trace the supply chain for the latest generation of retrofitted Russian “glide bombs” that are laying waste to eastern Ukraine. The Soviet-era bombs are adapted on the cheap with imported electronics that allow distant Russian warplanes to launch them at Ukraine.
– Other cities that have been devastated by the weapons include Avdiivka, Chasiv Yar and Vovchansk, and Russia has nearly unlimited supplies of the bombs, which are dispatched from airfields just across the border that Ukraine has not been able to hit.
– Store manager Oleksandr Lutsenko said the May 25 attack hints at Russia’s aim for Kharkiv: “Their goal is to turn it into a ghost city, to make it so that no one will stay, that there will be nothing to defend, that it will make no sense to defend the city. They want to scare people, but they will not succeed.”
– Russia has accelerated its destruction of Ukraine’s front-line cities in 2024 to a scale previously unseen in the war using the glide bombs and an expanding network of airstrips, according to an Associated Press analysis of drone footage, satellite imagery, Ukrainian documents and Russian photos. SPACE

This Friday’s full moon is the real ‘honey-moon’: {Translation, summary}
– Spring is over and summer announces its arrival with a “honeymoon”. But not exactly that of lovers. This is how the sixth full moon of the year is known, which can be seen from early Friday morning until Sunday morning all over the world, and in Spain it will appear in all its splendour in the night sky on Saturday. This moon will appear above the horizon as naturally as ever, although it will coincide with the point at which our natural satellite reaches its closest distance to the Earth, making it appear larger and brighter in the sky.
– Like the so-called blue or worm moons, the June moon has several names: honey moon, strawberry moon or hot moon are some of the most commonly used. But none of them correspond to an astronomical phenomenon, nor do they refer to any scientific concept surrounding it. So where do these nicknames come from? The nickname “honeymoon” goes back to the tradition of calling the first month of marriage “honeymoon” and it is believed that it may be linked to this full moon because of the custom of getting married in June. According to NASA, which also makes use of these popular nicknames, some writings suggest that the end of June was when the honey was ready for harvest, making it “the sweetest moon”. NATURE

Iberian lynx is no longer an endangered species: {Translation, summary}
– The Iberian lynx has officially been removed from the list of animals at risk of extinction today, and moved to the “vulnerable” list. This has been reported by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
– The reason is that in just 21 years, the wild feline par excellence native to the Iberian Peninsula has gone from being literally one step away from disappearance, with 94 specimens resisting as best they could in their last refuges in Doñana and the Andújar mountain range in Jaen, to count last Christmas 2,021 puppies and adults spread across the pastures, marshes and hills of Andalusia, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Levante and the south of Portugal. In just two decades, its population has multiplied by 21, with average annual growth of 20% since 2019. Photo: Antonio Liebana. CULTURE

‘Kebabs’, ‘pokes’ and hamburgers- Let’s save traditional Spanish cuisine: {Translation, summary}
– Between the phenomenon of globalisation and the evolution of our lifestyles, we continue to incorporate foreign flavours that we make everyday. Japanese is on the rise, with more than a thousand and a half restaurants in Spain; the same goes for Peruvian flavours, with hundreds of establishments and that ethnic and modern stamp. Not to mention the Italian impact, whose hallmarks (carpaccios, ravioli, risottos, tiramisu, burrata, balsamic vinegar) are firmly embedded in Spanish cuisine. If ceviches often replace pickles, it is no less true that for certain sectors of the population, bowls of Asian ramen arouse more interest than lentil or chickpea stews.
– At the same time, our big cities are witnessing the gentrification of certain neighbourhoods stripped of their past culinary identity. The multicultural atmosphere of Malasaña in Madrid or the Raval in Barcelona has led to the proliferation of small shops and restaurants where the exotic and the ethnic are the order of the day in pantries and recipe books. Asian, Indian and African-style establishments have replaced the traditional bars and eateries of yesteryear. We are witnessing an unprecedented gastronomic invasion with no signs of return.
– Even so, there is still time. Spain’s regional cuisines have such a varied and powerful resistance that their essence survives in a large number of restaurants and bars. We still have cocido, paella, gazpacho, fried fish, fabada, Galician octopus, potato omelette, croquettes and a multitude of other dishes. Recipes that, depending on the case, are interpreted with unequal fortune in summer in beach bars. The same goes for grilled sardines or espeto malagueño sardines…treasures that we must preserve at all costs as part of a heritage of enormous cultural and gastronomic value. Oscar AAR1827 & Nancy AAR1828 – 6 years old, brother and sister, lived together all their lives. Due to personal circumstances these 2 lovely dogs are in need of a new home together. They have been through a lot these last 12 months, but remain, loving, well balanced dogs. They get on well with other dogs, and love human company. Fully vaccinated, neutered etc. Both have been classed as PPP dogs, therefore a PPP license is required for adoption/foster. Currently living in kennels.
Please take a look at our website, where you will find more information and photos, plus details of other dogs and pups that we have in our care. Our adoption costs are 110e for pups that have been fully vaccinated, rabies, chip and passport and 180e for older dogs that have all vaccinations, papers and have been neutered. This contributes towards their vet and care costs, and helps us to continue rescuing abandoned dogs and cats.
