Not Satisfied With The New Rent Control Laws, Barcelona Leftists To Bar All Holiday Rentals By 2028:
– Barcelona, a top Spanish holiday destination, announced on Friday that it will bar short-term apartment rentals to tourists by 2028, an unexpectedly drastic move as it seeks to rein in soaring housing costs and make the city liveable for residents.
– The city’s leftist mayor, Jaume Collboni, said that by November 2028, Barcelona will scrap the licences of the 10,101 apartments currently approved as short-term rentals. Spain’s Socialist housing minister, Isabel Rodriguez, said she supported Barcelona’s decision.
“It’s about making all the necessary efforts to guarantee access to affordable housing,” she posted on X.
– Barcelona’s local government said in a statement it would maintain its “strong” inspection regime to detect potential illegal tourist apartments once the ban comes into force.
– The PP has lodged an appeal that has already been admitted for processing by the Constitutional Court.

Revealed– Puigdemont’s Secret Plan to Overturn the Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya party (Social democrat, pro-Catalan independence), Return Victorious to Spain and Achieve Catalan Independence!:
– A document found in a police search after his escape detailed a step-by-step strategy to advance the declaration of Catalan independence. The whole plan Puigdemont used, and continues to use to manipulate President Sanchez, the press, and even the public, is exposed in this article. It reveals as well Puigdemont’s Russia connections, opening the door to new charges of treason and insurrection! Absolutely fascinating if you follow Spanish politics. Otherwise skip it. ANDALUCÍA

The working day will be reduced from 40 to 38.5 hours after Summer, then down to 37.5 hours per week from 1/1/25 + other new rules with up to €10k fines, some very intrusive and burdensome, written/printed work logs no longer acceptable: {Translation}
– In an increasingly complex political scenario, the government is keen to push through some of its big election promises, such as the star measure to reduce the working week to 37.5 hours for all Spanish workers, with no exceptions. The Ministry of Labour already has its proposal for this initiative and sent it to the social partners this Friday, barely five days after it took the reins of the negotiations after the failure of the meetings to agree it between the unions and employers.
– On 1 January 2025, all Spanish workers will have a maximum working week of 37.5 hours. This is stated in the draft royal decree to which this newspaper has had access, which also establishes that the 40-hour working week that currently applies by law will be reduced to 38.5 hours when the law is approved, something that the government would like to do before the end of the summer.
– It does specify that these 38.5 hours until the end of this year or the 37.5 hours that will be applied from next January will be on an annual basis, as requested by the social partners, which will allow them to have a little more flexibility in reducing the working day with holidays, days off or leave.
– However, the government has not given in to another demand of the employers in order to reach an agreement: raising the annual overtime limit from the current 80 hours to 150 hours per worker. Although the UGT had shown its willingness to tackle this measure if the employers agreed to pay these hours with a 25% surcharge, Labour, like the CCOO, does not see it in a positive light and has not incorporated it into the decree, which means that it knows that it already has the employers’ no. The government is taking a further step forward in this direction.
– Moreover, the government is taking another step forward in the working day register, which it set up five years ago and which is not bearing the expected fruits. For this reason, the new regulation means a tightening of time control, which companies, whether large or small, or the self-employed, will have to do digitally. It will no longer be possible to do this manually, as has been the case until now, with the aim of ensuring that these records can never be modified and that they are totally reliable.
– Similarly, as the Second Vice-President, Yolanda Díaz, had announced, the fines for companies that fail to comply with the time register will be substantially increased, not only in terms of the amount, but above all because a fine will be imposed for each worker, and not per company, as was the case until now, in the event that data is omitted or falsified in the time register, or if the register does not exist. The amounts of the new fines will range from 1,000 euros to 10,000 euros per worker.
– In order to guarantee the authenticity and traceability of the data reflected in the register, the register must allow the identity of the worker who makes the record to be unequivocally identified. In addition, remote access to the register is ensured for committees and the Labour and Social Security Inspectorate. There will be a system with interoperability that allows the sharing and exchange of information and data.
– As for part-time workers, the text states that part-time contracts with a duration equal to or greater than the maximum working week now set “will be automatically converted into full-time employment contracts”. On the other hand, the draft royal decree establishes that in the case of workers with reduced working hours or part-time contracts “will have the right to continue working the same number of hours they have been working”, but they will receive a “proportional increase in their salary”, depending on what this represents in terms of the new working hours. Otherwise, their pay would be devalued.
– The government will set up a social dialogue roundtable with the most representative trade unions and business associations in order to evaluate the results of the reduction in working hours established in this regulation and “continue to make progress in reducing the maximum length of the ordinary legal working day”, taking into account the characteristics of the different sectors of activity, the evolution of productivity and economic circumstances.Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/economia/trabajo/jornada-laboral-reducira-375-horas-semanales-enero-20240621180538-ntrc.html

It takes an average of over 24 months for the Andalucia courts to process a squatter eviction as strikes, insufficient staff, huge backlogs & paper files clog the system: {Translation, summary}
– On average, a landlord in Spain has to wait 24 months to receive a ruling allowing squatters to be evicted from a property. This is the result of adding up the time taken by the proceedings in the Courts of First Instance and, in the event of an appeal, the time taken by the Provincial Courts responsible for resolving the case.
– Thus, in the region of Castilla y León, the time taken to obtain a final judgement can take up to three years (35.9 months); the same is true of Murcia, with an average of 27 months, followed by the Canary Islands (26 months) and Andalusia (24.9 months). On the opposite side are Asturias (14.9 months); Navarre (14.2 months) and Aragon (13.5 months).
– The number of occupations processed declined in Spain in 2023. In the last year, they reached courts throughout Spaina total of 2,261 procedures due to illegal occupation of homes, a figure that represents 18.2% less compared to the 2022 procedures.
– This decline is not due to fewer squatter occupations, it is due to the lower capacity of the courts to handle new cases. “Judicial procedures are getting slower every day for many reasons, such as the growth in litigation and the lack of personnel and material resources in the courts”, explains Carmen Giménez, a lawyer at G&G Abogados.
– In addition, Giménez assures that “civil servants work with mountains of paper and files because the digitalization of judicial files is not yet available”, which means that the paper has to be taken to the court, “nor do they have sufficient material means to print what we send there”.
– All of this causes, according to the lawyer, a “monumental delay” in the proceedings. In addition, she points out that it must be taken into account that there are other proceedings with preferential status such as those dealing with fundamental rights, minors or incapacitation, which always causes other proceedings to be delayed. {Repeated court worker strikes also added to the procesing delays. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5523774/0/plazo-para-echar-un-okupa-una-vivienda-bate-un-nuevo-record-se-tarda-media-hasta-dos-anos-los-tribunales/

PP points out the “weakness” of the Government and accuses it of acting as a “shredder of institutions” to “save Sánchez”: {Translation}
– The deputy secretary of Economy of the PP, Juan Bravo {pic}, has stressed this Sunday the “weakness” that, in his opinion, currently characterises the Government of Spain, and has argued that the Executive is acting as a “shredder of institutions” with the sole objective of “saving” the president, Pedro Sánchez, “at the cost of anything”. This is what the PP leader said in an appearance in Seville together with the president of the Sevillian ‘populares’, Ricardo Sánchez, in which he began by arguing that in the last week “the weakness of Sánchez’s government has been revealed once again”.
– Specifically, Juan Bravo has remarked that in this week “we have known elements that make us see that the Government does not govern, that the only thing that concerns it is to save the figure of Sánchez”, and thus has alluded to “new data on these cases of corruption involving the PSOE and Sánchez’s associates”, such as “new payments, new commissions, new people, new companies, even new villas linked to this plot”, he added.
– “Secondly, we have seen the weakness of the Government when, talking about the Budget for 2025”, the Executive does not assume its powers to draw up new annual accounts, and “once again what they do is ask the separatist parties if they are going to support” the project presented by the Executive, according to Juan Bravo, who has criticised the Government for asking those who “do not believe in Spain if they are willing to support the Budget of Spain”. If these separatist parties “say no, there will be no Budget for Spain, and if they say yes, there will be a Budget for all Spaniards, that is the reality”, warned the PP Deputy Secretary of Economy.
– Similarly, the former Finance Minister of the Andalusian Regional Government also referred to the pending reform of the regional funding system, which affects “all Spaniards” so that “we have a principle of equality in the provision of public services and freedom”, according to Juan Bravo. After pointing out that the financing system that is still being applied was agreed in 2009 by the PSOE with the then “tripartite” that governed Catalonia, Juan Bravo remarked that the current First Vice-President of the Government and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, “defended” as Andalusian Minister of Finance “that a new financing system was essential”, as well as that “an extra 16 billion were needed for the financing system”. 16 billion extra to the financing system”, and, after six years at the head of the Treasury portfolio in the Council of Ministers, “there is no new financing system”.
– In addition, the PP leader pointed out that Montero, as Minister of Finance, “defended the need for multilateralism”, but now “proposes bilateralism with Catalonia, with a debt cancellation, with a quota only” for that community, according to Juan Bravo, who has argued that now there is talk of regional funding “because it is necessary” for Pedro Sánchez “to remain president, because without the votes of Junts and ERC” in Congress, the socialist leader “would not be” head of the Executive, he stressed.
– The PP Deputy Secretary of Economy warned that Minister Montero “says that there will be no quota” for Catalonia, just as before the Government “said that there would be no pardon” or amnesty for the Catalan “separatists” of the independence process that led to the referendum of 1 October 2017 and in the end “there has been”.
– Juan Bravo pointed out that the PP defends “a system of regional funding that focuses on citizens rather than territories, that focuses on multilateralism”, and, “if there is a real will, on a transitional fund that accompanies until a new funding system is approved”, as well as a system in which “the citizen is taken into account, but also dispersion, ageing, the equal provision of all public services”.
– After this, the PP’s Deputy Secretary of Economy has denounced the fact that Pedro Sánchez’s government has become “a shredder” of institutions, so that “if he does not like what the Senate does, he takes away its powers through the back door; if the media provide information he does not like, he proposes to intervene and sanction them”. “He is so much of a shredder of the institutions that we currently have no governor of the Bank of Spain”, according to Juan Bravo, who pointed out that, “in the history of Spanish democracy”, prior to the current moment “there has only been one day” on which this vacancy had occurred, “because it fell on a Sunday”.
– The PP Deputy Secretary of Economy concluded by accusing the Government of behaving like “a shredder of institutions with a single objective”, that of “saving Mr. Sánchez, allowing him to be President of the Government of Spain at the cost of health, education, financing, the unity of all Spaniards; at the cost of anything”, Juan Bravo said.

RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA

A very active criminal group that robbed inhabited houses in Rincón de la Victoria is broken up: {Translation, summary}
– The Guardia Civil, within the framework of Operation PICARZO/GOLAUDI, has arrested in the towns of Roquetas de Mar and El Ejido (Almería), a criminal group made up of eleven people, for having committed 68 crimes of burglary in inhabited dwellings throughout the national territory, especially in the provinces of Jaén, Ciudad Real and Málaga, some of them in Rincón de la Victoria.
– Those investigated travelled by vehicle from their homes in Almería to small towns to commit their robberies, always on Fridays and Saturdays, or holidays, taking advantage of the fact that the residents were out of their homes. The perpetrators would ring the doorbell to make sure that no one was home, after which they would jump over walls or break windows to gain access to the interior of the property and steal all kinds of jewellery, weapons, cash and any other valuables they could find. Football News- Malaga CF secure last-gasp play-off final victory to earn promotion back to Segunda:
– They’ve done it! Malaga CF have earned promotion back to the Segunda División at the first time of asking.
– A 2-2 draw sealed deep into extra time against 10-man Gimnàstic helped secure a 4-3 aggregate win in the Primera RFEF play-off final in Tarragona on Saturday evening. Sergio Pellicer’s side needed to avoid defeat in the second leg at Nou Estadi to secure promotion from the third tier – and they did just that, albeit in the most dramatic of circumstances, stealing victory from the jaws of defeat.
– Finding themselves trailling 2-0 going into the second half of extra time and needing two goals, it was two teenagers who stepped up when it mattered most. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/sport/malagacf/malaga-secure-lastgasp-playoff-final-victory-earn-20240622233051-nt.html

– One of India, Australia or Afghanistan will now await in the last four, the semi-final lineup to be determined over the next 36 hours or so. {I know absolutely nothing about cricket despite watching Youtube vids explaining how the game is played. SOCIAL MEDIA

This is the spectacular image of the Sierra Nevada thaw that’s gone viral on social media:
– The national park has finished its ski season and the resorts have long-closed, but it has a unique charm that many hikers are eager to see. This is the thaw, a phenomenon that occurs in May and June, when the rising temperatures cause the snow that has accumulated throughout the winter and spring to melt.
– One particular snapshot of snow melting on the Sierra Nevada has gone viral on social media in recent weeks. Taken on Sunday 16 June and posted by Ángel Caeli on X, formerly Twitter, the photograph has already had more than 4,000 likes and numerous comments. Photo: Angel Caeli.
