The parade will start at 20.30 hours from the Plaza de España. The presence of the Nerja Band will add an even more festive atmosphere to this eagerly awaited event.
– Macharaviaya’s 4th of July fiesta is an annual event that celebrates the historic links between the town and the United States, in honour of Bernardo de Gálvez, a hero of the American War of Independence originally from Macharaviaya. MALAGA CITY

BREAKING NEWS– New Guardia Civil operation with dozens of armed troops moves against Islamist terrorism in Malaga: {Translation, updated 5:34pm, 24/6/24}
– The Guardia Civil has carried out an important operation against Islamist terrorism in the city of Malaga, as sources from the Armed Forces have confirmed to SUR. The operation was carried out in the neighbourhood of Nuevo San Andrés, where the searches were concentrated.
– It appears to have resulted in arrests, although neither the number of arrests nor the specific reasons for which the suspects are being investigated have been revealed for the moment.
– According to sources, several units of the Benemérita have been deployed to this district of Malaga with dozens of armed troops Monday night and into Tuesday. The deployment also involved agents from the Rapid Action Group (GAR) {pic}, specialised in the arrest of terrorist elements and the execution of operations involving great risk.
– For the moment, the only thing the sources have specified is that the investigation is still open, so no further details of the operation have been released. Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/sucesos/operacion-terrorismo-islamista-malaga-20240624173323-nt.html

TORROX

Torrox is once again protesting against Alsa for the reduction of routes on the lines to Malaga and Velez: {Translation, summary}
– The municipal council of Torrox has unanimously agreed in its ordinary session held this Monday morning, 24th June, to once again demand that the Ministry of Public Works of the Junta de Andalucía, the Metropolitan Transport Consortium of Málaga and the concessionary company Nex Continental Holdings S.L.U. (ALSA) comply in full with the conditions of the transport service on the Torrox-Málaga and Torrox-Vélez-Málaga lines, fully restoring the timetables “that were unilaterally modified and cut due to Covid, and which were not reactivated once the new normality was restored.”
– Torrox council considers that in the concession specifications, the bus frequencies are set at four daily outward and four daily return journeys on the Torrox-Malaga line and three outward and three return journeys from Monday to Saturday on the Torrox-Velez-Malaga line, that have not been reactivated after their suspension during the pandemic, “which is a breach of contract that causes significant harm to users who need to use public transport for their journeys, especially significant on the route that connects with Vélez-Málaga, as they are forced to make transfers in Torre del Mar”.
– In this sense, according to the motion of the IU municipal group, ALSA currently only offers one service from Torrox Monday to Friday to Vélez-Málaga at 13:45 hours and another one back at 14:45 hours, while the line to Málaga has three direct services from Monday to Friday at 7:00 hours, 9:00 hours and 14:00 hours and three direct services back at 9:30 hours, 11:30 hours and 15:45 hours.
– “For Torroxeños who often need to travel to Vélez-Málaga for medical appointments, to study, to work or to carry out formalities in various public administrations, it is an odyssey to do so satisfactorily with the current timetables, being forced to make several transfers to reach their destinations with the cost in time and money that this entails”, the proposal points out. GRANADA

Is this really necessary? Tracking and tracing every visitor- Granada’s famous Alhambra palace beefs up security with ‘smart’ cameras and an anti-drone system:
– Granada’s famous Alhambra palace is set to improve its security. The main new feature is the replacement of the conventional cameras with intelligent ones, which will be distributed strategically around the monument and will make the work of the staff, the personnel responsible for protecting the monument and its visitors more efficient.
– A consultant analysed the weaknesses and then drew up the specifications requesting the improvements. Among them is a 10 per cent increase in the number of cameras – there are already a hundred in the grounds – and an additional security guard.
– “The new cameras will help us to anticipate attacks. They will detect if someone is running, if someone is holding their hand to their chest, if visitors are going the wrong way, and that will save us time,” said Ruiz-Jiménez, Director of the Alhambra. According to the head of the security service, these ‘smart’ cameras will learn and can be ‘taught’. In other words, the staff will teach the cameras things that need to be monitored.
– The new cameras will be installed from the summer onwards and an anti-drone system will come into operation a little later, in the autumn. Using antennae with a coverage of more than ten kilometres, drones will be detected with greater precision and their signal can be inhibited making them fall to the ground so that they are no longer a threat.
– With this digital project, it will be possible to study everything from cracks to visitor flows and to see how the monument is evolving down to the smallest detail without having to carry out experiments. {This digital surveillance system will be connected to the Guardia Civil network AND the “cloud”, so it will incorporate “facial recognition” while it scans for “threats”, bringing with it all the violations of personal liberties that facial scanning of the public creates, while also introducing all the security risks of “cloud” data storage. For less of an investment they could hire half a dozen more guards with body-cams, who actually provide an on-site service that assists the visitors, provide faster response-to-incident times, and additionally, the mobile body-cams provide better video feeds in emergencies than a camera mounted high on a wall. -Ed.}. EUROPE

Russia promises retaliation against US for Ukraine strike on Crimea:
– The Kremlin on Monday squarely blamed the United States for an attack on Crimea with U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles that killed at least four people and injured 151, and Moscow formally warned the U.S. ambassador that retaliation would follow. The war in Ukraine has deepened a crisis in relations between Russia and the West, and Russian officials have said the conflict is entering the most dangerous escalation to date.
– “You should ask my colleagues in Europe, and above all in Washington, the press secretaries, why their governments are killing Russian children,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
– Russia said the United States had supplied the weapons, while the U.S. military had aimed them and provided data.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry summoned U.S. Ambassador Lynne Tracy and told her Washington was “waging a hybrid war against Russia and has actually become a party to the conflict”. “Retaliatory measures will definitely follow,” it said.

HEALTH

Ozempic (Semaglutide) Spain’s best selling injection for weight loss already has competition- Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) promises superior weight losses: {Translation, summary}
– The new medicine will arrive in pharmacies on July 1, with a prescription and without financing for now. The monthly treatment costs 271 euros per month, somewhat higher than its rival, and it’s suposedly more effective than Ozempic for weight loss.
– The new drug will be marketed in two doses of 5 and 10 milligrams at a price of 271 euros and 358 euros per month, respectively. This price is somewhat higher than Ozempic, whose monthly injections start at 140 euros, but it is “competitive”, according to José Antonio Sacristán, Lilly’s medical director, during the presentation of the drug. He also explained that, for the time being, Mounjaro will not be marketed in Spain in its 15 milligram version, the most effective dose. “We believe that the presentations that are put on sale will cover the treatment of the majority of patients,” he said.
– Like Ozempic, the treatment is only intended for people who are unable to control their diabetes and overweight with conventional drugs or lifestyle changes, such as better diet or exercise.
– “Not for cosmetic use”. If semaglutide was a revolution in the care of both conditions, tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is a step further, assured yesterday the representatives of the scientific societies involved: the Spanish Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes, Obesity and Internal Medicine. But it comes with a warning: “It is not intended for cosmetic use. If you don’t have obesity, this drug is not going to do you any favours and may cause unwanted hormonal effects in the long term,” warned Mar Malagón, president of the Spanish Society for the Study of Obesity. Like Ozempic, the treatment is only intended for people who are unable to control their diabetes or obesity with conventional drugs or lifestyle changes, such as better diet or exercise.
– Why is it superior? Mounjaro also reduces appetite, improves satiety, delays gastric emptying and increases insulin production for weight loss and glucose control, just like its competitor. But it acts on two different hormone receptors: GLP-1 and GIP, which enhances its action and promotes drug tolerance. If there are any patients who are resistant to semaglutide drugs, they will have a new therapeutic option. Its mechanism of action reduces excess fat, including visceral fat, which accumulates around the waist circumference. “This is an indicator that shows us that not only weight is lost, but that fat is actually lost,” explained Javier Escalada, president of the Foundation of the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition. And it achieves this earlier than other drugs.
– In people with type 2 diabetes, the results are striking. More than 90% of diabetics achieve glucose control and normalisation in half of the cases treated. “We cannot speak of a cure because type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease, but we can speak of a reversal,” says Escalada.
– In terms of weight, losses of up to 22.5% have been seen, which translated into kilos reaches 23.6 kg per year and four out of ten patients treated managed to lose more than 25 kilos, figures similar to those achieved by bariatric surgery. The average weight loss was 12.4 kg compared to 6.2 kg with Ozempic, as well as a decrease in cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
– Rebound effect and other problems. Like other similar drugs, the side effects are also similar. The main ones are gastric discomfort (nausea, diarrhoea, constipation…) which usually disappear over time and improve if taken gradually, starting with the lowest dose. Nor is Mounjaro free from the so-called rebound effect, although doctors insist that rather than a rebound effect it is a drug that is intended for a chronic condition. If you stop taking it, its ‘magic’ wears off.
– Other bad news is that the loss of visceral fat is accompanied by a loss of muscle mass, as with other similar treatments, which must be countered by increased protein intake and physical activity, experts explained.
– There are only three clear contraindications to taking it, although it is indicated for diabetes and overweight: being pregnant, having suffered pancreatitis or having a family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma. This is a rare tumour that is not related to the more common thyroid cancer.

CULTURE

“Holy Eviction, Batman!”- Archbishop of Burgos calls on the schismatic nuns to leave Belorado in the coming days or face eviction: {Translation, summary}
– The archbishop of Burgos, Mario Iceta, on Monday called on the ten schismatic nuns of La Orden de las Clarisas (The Order of the Poor Clares) {pic, right} to leave the monastery of Belorado “in the near future”. If they do not do so, legal action will be taken, and the nuns become squatters. “The ten now excommunicated nuns have no legal title to remain in the monasteries and annexed buildings, so they will have to leave them”, insisted Iceta, who has extended this request to Pablo de Rojas, promoter of the Pious Union of St Paul the Apostle, and to José Ceacero, the ‘cocktail priest’. If this does not happen, “the legal services will have no choice but to initiate any legal action that may be necessary”.
– Iceta {pic, left} appeared this Thursday in the Archdiocese of Burgos accompanied by the secretary of the Federation of the Poor Clare Sisters of Our Lady of Aránzazu, Carmen Ruiz; the judicial vicar, Donato Miguel Gómez, and the representitive of Legal Affairs of the Archbishopric, Rodrigo Saiz García after the excommunication of the ten “ex-nuns” decreed last Saturday.
– He pointed out that in the accounts managed by the schismatic sisters, the balance is less than 6,000 euros, an amount clearly insufficient to cover the salaries of the people hired or to pay suppliers. Photo: R.Ordonez. Source, Spanish: https://www.abc.es/espana/castilla-leon/arzobispo-burgos-emplaza-monjas-cismaticas-abandonar-belorado-20240624133643-nt.html

PETS

Malaga Opens Spain’s First Pet Cemetery: {Translation, summary}
– The idea of burying or cremating pets in the cemetery is still a bit out of place for many. But, in recent years, the demand for this service has been growing and, until now, it was only offered through private companies. This is no longer the case in Malaga because the city has, as of this Monday, the first public cemetery for pets in Spain. It is located at the Parcemasa facilities, in San Gabriel, and is being planned to give the last rest to pet animals.
– The building has almost a thousand square meters and is drawn in a circular shape. It has a reception area, administrative office, veterinary office, ash delivery room, toilets and farewell room.
– How much does it cost to bury a pet in Malaga? Prices depend on the type of product chosen and the weight of the animal. The final outlay already includes the cemetery and veterinary fees. A basic cremation for pets up to 30 kilos costs 20 euros. The maximum luxury plan here is 975 euros. This includes an urn or burial for an animal over 30 kilos and 30 years without having to pay maintenance. The maintenance fee is regularly 25 euros per year. BREAKING NEWS– Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free:
– WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange plans to plead guilty to a conspiracy charge this week as part of a plea deal with the U.S. Justice Department that will allow him to go free after having spent five years in a British prison, according to court documents.
– Court documents revealing Assange’s plea deal were filed Monday evening in U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory in the Pacific Ocean. Assange was expected to appear in that court and to be sentenced to 62 months, with credit for time served in British prison, meaning he would be free to return to Australia, where he was born.
