Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

The judge warns Begoña Gómez that she must attend Barrabés’ statement hearing under threat of “detention”: {Translation, summary}
– The judge investigating President Sanchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez, for the commission of two alleged crimes has ordered the businesswoman to attend court in person on Monday 15 July, the day on which she is due to testify as a witness against her partner, Carlos Barrabés. The investigator determined that, if she does not attend, he can issue an arrest warrant for her.
– This is what can be deduced from a summons to which Vozpópuli has had access and which Judge Peinado issued before Begoña Gómez’s appearance in court last Friday. In this document, which was signed by the businesswoman herself, it is determined that she has “the duty to appear” assisted by her legal defence, a position held by the former socialist minister and ex-prosecutor Antonio Camacho. “I warn you that you have the obligation to appear and that, if you do not do so, or if you do not give just cause to prevent it, this summons may be converted into an arrest warrant”, reads the document. The document was drawn up by the lawyer for the Administration of Justice of the Peinado court and is signed by Begoña Gómez.
– Thus, Begoña Gómez will have to appear twice next week in the Plaza de Castilla courts. The first of these will be on 15 July, to witness her business partner’s testimony by videoconference, a hearing originally scheduled for last month but delayed 30 days by Barrabés for health reasons, and the second on Friday 19 July, to be questioned for the crimes of corruption in business and influence peddling.

ANDALUCÍA
The Board believes that the TC “has not absolved anyone” for the ERE although it has become an “instrument of the apparatus” of Moncloa: {Translation}
– The spokesman for the Andalusian Government, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco (PP-A), lamented on Tuesday that the Constitutional Court (TC) “has become just another instrument of the political apparatus of Moncloa (Spain’s ‘White House’)”, although he also maintained that the court of guarantees “has not absolved anyone” of those convicted in the case of the fraudulent employment regulation schemes (ERE) in Andalusia.
– These are ideas that the Minister of Sustainability, Environment and Blue Economy has moved in an interview on Canal Sur Radio, picked up by Europa Press, in line with the decisions being taken in recent weeks by the Plenary of the TC to uphold appeals for protection of those convicted by the so-called ‘political piece’ of the case of the ERE, and a week before it studies the appeals filed by former Socialist presidents of the Junta Manuel Chaves and José Antonio Griñán.
– After it emerged that the report to be studied by the TC from 16 July proposes pardoning all the embezzlement for which former president José Antonio Griñán was convicted in the “specific procedure” of financing the fraudulent ERE with regional funds, the spokesman for the PP-A government has described it as a “drama” that “the rulings of the Constitutional Court no longer surprise anyone”, and “we all know what” the TC “is going to say about any issue it is asked about, because it has become just another instrument of Moncloa’s political apparatus”.
– Fernández-Pacheco has alluded on this point specifically to the “misnamed progressive majority” of members that make up the Plenary of the TC, which rather “is a sanchista majority, put in place by Pedro Sánchez – the President of the Government – to follow the dictates of his interests”, he added.
– In any case, the minister pointed out that the Junta “of course does not consider lost” the “money that was embezzled” in the case of the ERE, which “belonged to the Andalusian unemployed, and which ended up where we all know”, he added to emphasise that “the main commitment that the Andalusian government has” is “precisely to recover” that money.
– Along these lines, Fernández-Pacheco asserted that “the ERE case is still the biggest case of corruption in the history of Spain”, and in it “680 million euros were diverted that went to the Andalusian unemployed and which ended up, at the very least, in the creation of a clientelist network to keep the PSOE in power for many years, if not in another type of business of dubious morality that we all remember”, he added.
*THE “INSANE CAMPAIGN” OF PSOE-A*
– “And the Junta de Andalucía has no other aim than to recover that money and, of course, not to make fools of us by trying to make us see that it was well done”, the spokesperson for the regional minister went on to criticise the “insane campaign” that, in his opinion, the Andalusian PSOE has undertaken “on the basis” of the decisions of the TC “trying to make us believe that everything that happened was well done”, when “it was not well done”, he emphasised.
– Furthermore, Fernández-Pacheco asserted that “the Constitutional Court has not absolved anyone” in the case of the ERE, and what it has done is that “it has revoked a series of sentences that have been returned to the Provincial Court of Seville, which will have to rule again”, so that “no one has been pardoned here, no one has been absolved, however much the Socialist Party insists on making us see it”, the spokesman councillor concluded. Two injured in a collision between a motorcycle and a cyclist in Torrox-Costa, ambulance takes more than 40 minutes to arrive!: {Translation}
– A collision between a cyclist and a motorbike, which occurred early this Tuesday morning, has resulted in two people seriously injured, the two occupants of these vehicles. The accident took place at kilometre 287 of the old National Road 340, in the municipality of Torrox-Costa, next to Calaceite beach.
– For reasons unknown and under investigation, there was a collision between the cyclist, a 74-year-old man, and the motorbike, driven by a 30-year-old woman from Nerja. As a result of the heavy impact, both fell to the asphalt and were left lying on the road. Witnesses of the accident quickly came to their aid and alerted the emergency medical services, the Guardia Civil and the local police. Witnesses to the accident told SUR that the emergency service ambulances “took more than 40 minutes to arrive at the scene”.
– For the moment, no further details have been released about the state of health of the two injured. The 112 Andalucía emergency service told this newspaper that the caller who reported this accident said that the cyclist had suffered severe trauma to his head as a result of the collision and the fall. The Government gives the green light to the 100 million euros for the future desalination plant to be located in Velez-Malaga: {Translation}
– The Council of Ministers, at the proposal of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), has approved this Tuesday, 9 July, addendum number one of the modification of the direct management agreement of Aguas de las Cuencas Mediterráneas (Acuamed) which will allow, among other actions, the future desalination plant to be located in Vélez-Málaga with a planned investment of one hundred million euros.
– The sub-delegate of the Government in Malaga, Javier Salas, stressed that “this allows this company to continue with the work that had already begun previously, such as the constitution of the Central Board of Users, after the Junta de Andalucía took eight months to decide the location and refused to participate in the drafting of the project, as they did in other communities in Spain, the Government of Spain continues to take steps to materialise this important infrastructure to provide water in such a worrying situation of drought as we suffer”, according to Cadena SER Axarquia.
– In addition to the aforementioned actions, it includes others such as the interconnection of the seawater desalination plants of general interest in the Segura basin; the reuse of treated water from the Monte Orgegia WWTP in Alicante; the improved use of reclaimed water from the Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja WWTPs, also in Alicante, and desalination actions in eastern Almeria, with the Bajo Almanzora II plant in Almeria. French government in limbo after elections produce hung parliament:
– To huge surprise, the New Popular Front (NFP) – a broad alliance of the hard-left France Unbowed party, joined by Socialists, Greens and Communists – came out on top in France’s second round of parliamentary elections on Sunday July 7. While this made the NFP the largest political force in the National Assembly, it does not have an absolute majority. With 182 seats for the leftist coalition, 168 for President Macron’s centrists and 143 for the far-right National Rally (Rassemblement National, or RN), the Assembly, the lower house, is now divided into three distinct blocs.
– Macron asked Gabriel Attal to remain as prime minister temporarily for “the stability of the country” on Monday, but France is faced with a political landscape that is without precedent since the founding of the Fifth Republic in 1958.
– As negotiations get under way to attempt to forge a governing coalition, FRANCE 24 looks at potential scenarios that could unfold. Full article: https://www.france24.com/en/europe/20240708-french-government-in-limbo-after-elections-produce-hung-parliament
HEALTH
Free medicinal water baths in Malaga- where they are and how to get there: {Translation}
– The heart of the Axarquia hides a real historical and cultural treasure of the province of Malaga: the Baños de Vilo, a natural spa, accessible free of charge and which is known for its thermal waters that have been highly prized since Roman times for their supposed healing and rejuvenating properties.
– Located near the municipality of Periana, the baths have waters rich in health-giving minerals such as sulphur, magnesium and calcium, which emerge at a constant temperature of 21 degrees Celsius. These waters have been used for centuries to treat various skin conditions and other ailments, making it a place of reference for health and well-being.
– Its history dates back to Roman times, when public baths were an essential part of everyday life. The Romans built elaborate facilities around these thermal springs, firmly believing in their therapeutic properties. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Vilo Baths became very popular, being visited by personalities of the time, such as General Narváez.
– In 1828, a building with rooms and a bathhouse was constructed next to the main pool. However, disputes over ownership led to the deterioration of the facilities. It was in the late 19th century that Emilio de San Martín, then owner, undertook significant improvements, although a storm in 1907 caused serious damage.
– It was not until the early 1990s that Periana Town Council acquired the spa and began work to restore it for tourism purposes. Today, only a plunge pool remains, but it is perfectly integrated into the natural environment, offering a haven of peace surrounded by forests and mountains.
– To visit this unique place, head for the municipality of Periana, some 58 kilometres northeast of the city of Málaga. From Periana, follow the signs to the Baños de Vilo, which are about 3 kilometres from the centre of the village. The route is simple and well signposted, and is easily accessible by car. Are your tampons harming you? Study finds 16 metals in widely available brands:
– New research suggests tampons could be a potential source of metal exposure. The study, published in the Environment International journal, is presumed to be the first to measure metals in tampons.
– Researchers tested for 16 metals in 30 tampons from 14 different brands and 18 product lines. The study detected the presence of all 16 metals that were tested for. This included toxic metals like lead, which has no “safe” exposure level, according to the study. The study also found elevated mean concentrations of other toxic metals, like arsenic and cadmium, in tampons. Other metals detected included barium, calcium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, strontium, vanadium, and zinc. The study did not identify the tampon brands used in the research.
– The metals may be getting absorbed during the agricultural or manufacturing processes of tampons — and it’s possible those metals could then be absorbed by the vagina’s highly absorptive tissue, the study said.
– “The FDA is reviewing the study. All studies have limitations. While the chemical method used indicates these metals are present in the tampons tested in the laboratory, the study does not assess whether any metals are released from tampons when used in the body,” the FDA told Scripps News.
