SPAIN
The judge investigating President Sánchez’s brother- “The data reaffirm the indications of a crime”: {Translation, summary}
– The judge in Badajoz who is investigating the case against Pedro Sánchez’s brother David Sánchez {pic, left} remains firm in the investigation she has been conducting for a month and a half. She confirmed this in an order following the entry and seizure by the Guardia Civil of the official emails of nine politicians and technicians of the provincial council, including those of its president and leader of the PSOE Extremadura, Miguel Ángel Gallardo, and that of David Sánchez himself.
– After the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard intervened this Wednesday the emails of all of them for seven years (2016-2022) – until the same day of the search in the case of the president’s brother – the agents immediately asked the investigating judge to allow them to unravel all that information. She did so the following day, in an order stating that all the information that has been incorporated into the case over the last month and a half “only reaffirms the existence of the indications of the commission of the crimes under investigation”, among others against the public administration and for embezzlement, prevarication and influence peddling.
– In the same order from last Thursday, to which ABC has had access, the judge also appears surprised by another fact that called attention”. And the fact is that the provincial institution has only set up an office for David Sánchez, once the complaint from Clean Hands in which he is accused was filed, for among other things, of not having a fixed space because he barely went to his workplace. That is why the instructor of the judicial case is surprised that “senior management personnel [David Sánchez is head of the Performing Arts Office] lacked own office for one year and that its new location only was established in the same month [last May] in which the complaint is filed.
– In this way, the investigation picks up momentum regarding the circumstances under which David Sánchez gained his position. Manos Limpias also accused him of receiving a public salary without going to work and of residing in nearby Elvas (Portugal) to avoid paying taxes in Spain. It highlighted that his assets, which it estimated at 2 million euros, as “disproportionate”. MALAGA PROVINCE
Two months of falling reserves: Málaga and Guadalhorce return to serious drought: {Translation}
– The threshold of severe drought in Malaga capital jumps when the reservoirs of the Guadalhorce system fall below 71.4 hectometres in storage. Up until May, thanks to the rains of Easter Week and the weekend of 9-10 March and subsequent runoff, they reached 85 hm3. The Drought Committee avoided downgrading the situation to a severe level because it sensed what was going to happen. And it has happened. The province’s reservoirs began their fall on 13 May and it has been most marked in the Guadalhorce, Guadalteba and Conde de Guadalhorce. Together, on Saturday, they had a total of just 67 hm3. Last year they had 113. It is not twice as much, but it is close.
– If it does not rain in autumn, all the alarm bells will go off again. Things would be even worse if Málaga and the Junta were not applying key policies to try to contain the situation: massive pressure regulations; expansion of the El Atabal plant; the fight against leaks; projects to make the most of the Aljaima and Fahala wells (underway and gradually incorporating resources) and those of the Bajo Guadalhorce (not until next year), and the widespread use of raw water from the phreatic for irrigation and irrigation.
– Casasola and Limonero, which could also supply the city in small volumes, are not counted because they are strategic reserves. Between the two, they do not now reach 10 hm3.
– The flow of the two large reservoirs, Guadalhorce and Guadalteba {pic} these days is a trickle of water marked by a vast area of dry, cracked mud. On the other hand, the Conde de Guadalhorce, the smaller one, is in a better state than last year and provides summery pictures of bathers enjoying the water and the sun.
– There are barely 9 hm3 for relief irrigation in the Guadalhorce system. And in May Malaga stopped giving water to Axarquia, which is also still in the most severe level of drought. But, compared to last year, La Viñuela is much better off, almost 29 hm3, just double that of last year. This is enough water to guarantee the urban consumption of the region for more than a year, but, beware, it does not allow for irrigation, and for this reason irrigation is more than restricted (barely 3 hm3 of relief). The good news for the area is that the use of reclaimed water in the tertiary treatment plants is on the rise with the latest incorporation of the flows from the Peñón del Cuervo and some local improvements.
– The Costa del Sol is breathing a little easier, and could get through the summer in a situation of moderate drought. But there is no room for complacency because the La Concepción reservoir does not have a large capacity. Now, it is a little better than last year and has 37 hm3. Added to this is the progressive activation of the two extensions of the Marbella desalination plant, which will provide 20 hm3 per year in December.
– The reservoirs in the province store 144 hm3, 23% of their potential volume. They reached 171 almost in May, with the rains and runoff from the Nelson and Monica squalls, and had 34 hm3 more in 2023. However, before March, they were 46 hm3 less, just as a consolation.
– In any case, the plummeting fall, which is now two months old, prevents the province from leaving behind the nightmare of drought. In addition, the limitations of 200 litres per inhabitant per day are still in force; beaches and showers are closed except at points adapted for people with reduced mobility; watering gardens (not lawns) is allowed once a week, and only the refilling of swimming pools is allowed. Car washing is also not allowed outside authorised establishments. The heat does not let up- new yellow warning for temperatures of up to 41 degrees in Malaga this Monday: {Translation, summary}
– After three days of terral, which began in the early hours of Wednesday morning and left temperatures of up to 44 degrees centigrade in the province, this Monday the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) is once again activating the yellow alert along the entire provincial coastline. The regions of Ronda and Antequera, for the moment, are spared from this new weather warning.
– According to the forecast, the mercury will once again reach 34 degrees in the capital with night-time lows that will not drop below 24, one of the highest figures in recent days when the terral made its presence felt for the first time in the current summer period. The most intense heat will be felt in the Guadalhorce and Axarquia areas, where the thermometer is expected to reach 40 degrees again. At the moment, the Aemet forecasts that, at least, it will reach an average of 37 degrees around midday on Monday.
– Although municipalities such as Coín and Pizarra will experience temperatures of up to 41 degrees Celsius, temperatures in Malaga will relax slightly again on Wednesday and Thursday, when, for the moment, the Aemet does not have any active alerts. For the middle of the week, maximum temperatures are expected to be around 28 degrees Celsius, but not lower than 22 degrees Celsius. MIJAS
Closed since 2019, the Tamisa Golf hotel in Mijas finally gets new start:
– It is its first foray onto the Costa del Sol, but not in the hotel industry. Spanish business group Salmántica Cum Laude has bought the Tamisa Golf hotel in Mijas, which will now become the Nuevo Tamisa Golf. The director of the property, Casimiro Rodríguez, explained that the company is already working on the remodelling of the complex, which has been closed since 2019, and that an investment of around five million euros is expected, which includes the purchase cost. The idea is to welcome the first customers in mid-October.
– The plan is to offer a premium boutique hotel with 24 rooms, all ensuite and measuring 35 square metres, with views of the mountains and the golf course, along with a spa and an outdoor swimming pool. “The hotel can be upgraded to a five-star hotel with the planned developments, but the company has opted to operate it as a four-star superior,” Rodríguez said. USA
Trump survives assassination attempt after major security lapse:
– Donald Trump survived a weekend assassination attempt in an attack that will further inflame the U.S. political divide and has raised questions about the security lapses.
– Trump, 78, had just begun a campaign speech in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles (50 km) north of Pittsburgh, on Saturday when shots rang out, hitting the former president’s right ear and streaking his face with blood. “Fight! Fight! Fight!” Trump mouthed to supporters, pumping his fist, as Secret Service agents rushed him away. His campaign said he was doing well and appeared to have suffered no major injury besides a wound on his upper right ear.
– The FBI identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect in what it called an attempted assassination. The suspect was shot dead by Secret Service agents, the agency said, after he opened fire from the roof of a building about 150 yards (140 m) from the stage where Trump was speaking. An AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle was recovered near his body.
– One person who attended the rally was killed and two other spectators were critically wounded, the Secret Service said.
