SPAIN

Sánchez’s ‘horribilis’ week- summoned as a witness, besieged by Puigdemont and reprimanded by Brussels: {Translation, summary}
– Misfortune never comes alone. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has been able to see this in the last week, which began on Monday with his summons as a witness by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado for the case investigating his wife. It continued on Tuesday, when the Government lost two important votes in the Congress of Deputies due to the veto power of Carles Puigdemont’s party and the lack of parliamentary support: the one that allowed to start the processing of the Budget for 2025 and the reform of the law on foreigners. It continued on Wednesday with the dismissal of Isabel García, the director of the Women’s Institute, for the awarding contracts for the Violet Points project, of which García herself and her wife have been beneficiaries in various municipalities of the PSOE. And the Executive also received a reprimand from Brussels for the Government’s pressure on judges, in addition to the Supreme Court’s reprimand to the attorney general for his appointment policy.
– Judge Peinado’s investigation of the president’s wife will also be extended by at least two months, as the Provincial Court of Madrid will not review the appeals presented by Begoña Gómez’s defence and the Public Prosecutor’s Office until 30 September. In this regard, Gómez’s lawyer has asked the Provincial Court not to delay its decision until that date. Be that as it may, witness statements will take place over the next two months, including that of the President of the Government, scheduled for next Tuesday in Moncloa. Although Sánchez asked to make it in writing, the judge has insisted that the statement take place at the headquarters of the Executive. The judge of the ‘Begoña Gómez case’ goes to La Moncloa this Tuesday to take a testimonial statement from Pedro Sánchez: {Translation, summary}
– The judge investigating Begoña Gómez for influence peddling and corruption in business will travel this Tuesday to the Moncloa Palace where he plans to take a testimonial statement from the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.
– This will be the most relevant interrogation of the six that he wants to carry out between Monday, July 29 and Tuesday, July 30. Despite Sánchez’s attempt to have it take place in writing given his position, Judge Carlos del Valle – replacing Juan Carlos Peinado – finally decided last Friday to maintain his presence and for the statement to take place in the offices of The Moncloa.
– Pedro Sánchez will become the third president to be summoned to testify as a witness before a judge during his term in office, although in his case he has been called in the investigation phase of a case being pursued for alleged influence peddling against his wife, Begoña Gómez. Begoña Gómez’s ‘magic wand’ with Barrabés- he invoiced 347,000 euros with the PP and 20 million with the PSOE: {Translation, summary}
– The head of the 41st Court of Instruction of Madrid, Juan Carlos Peinado, is investigating the ‘magic wand’ with which the wife of the President of the Government Begoña Gómez {pic} touched the businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés. Barrabés’ company went from invoicing 347,000 public euros with the PP in the Government before Sanchez arrived, to 20 million euros with the PSOE administration of Pedro Sánchez.
– According to the summary of the case, to which Libertad Digital has had access, “Barrabés and his consulting firm increased its turnover with the public sector following the arrival to power of Pedro Sánchez, and after the friendship developed with his wife, Begoña Gómez. Thus, under the PP government, it only had a few contracts: 57,000 euros in 2017; 205,000 in 2016; and 200,000 euros in 2015, all for Civil Guard clothing. Plus 85,000 from Correos in 2017. And yet, with the PSOE in power it went on to invoice 20 million euros”. Spanish government announces 1.5 billion for trains in Catalonia… and little more than studies for Malaga and the Costa del Sol:
– The Spanish and Catalan governments reached an agreement on Monday to transfer no less than 1.52 billion euros to the Catalan administration, spread over the next three years, for the transfer of Rodalies (commuter trains). This will be more than a billion euros for the first phase of implementation, as well as a fund for research and university grants. In the coming months, the cancellation of 15 billion euros of Catalonia’s debt with the rest of Spain will also be formalised. The agreement was signed by the central government and the Catalan government at a meeting of the joint commission on economic and fiscal affairs in Barcelona.
– At the other end of the country, in Malaga, the second fastest-growing province in the country in terms of population growth, and with a severe lack of public transport infrastructure, the ministry of transport has provided little more than studies. MALAGA PROVINCE

Hottest days of this summer on the way for Malaga and the Costa del Sol:
– It has not been the hottest summer on record for Malaga, but neither has it been free of the effect of episodes of the hot ‘terral’ wind. The local weather phenomenon that makes the thermometers climb like no other will return to the city from next Thursday for several days and will take the mercury up to around 40C. Spain’s state weather agency (Aemet) is forecasting highs of 37 degrees during the day and lows of no less than 26 degrees for next Thursday evening. On Friday, the temperature will reach 40C. On that day, Aemet is forecasting a nighttime minimum of 27 degrees.
– After weathering the last heatwave that has stalked the whole of the country and the inland areas of the province, the capital of the Costa del Sol will not escape next weekend either, as it is expected that high temperatures will also be maintained on Saturday and Sunday. On the western strip of the coast the picture will be similar.
– For Torremolinos, Aemet forecasts highs of 38C and lows of 26 degrees from Thursday onwards. On Friday temperatures will continue to rise. The same trend in Benalmádena: 38C maximum and 26 degrees minimum from Thursday.
– Inland, it will be necessary to seek shelter in enclosed areas with air conditioning or use efficient room fans. On Thursday it will reach 45C in municipalities such as Coín. In Alhaurín de la Torre, Thursday and Friday will also exceed 40 degrees. Aemet forecasts highs of 42C for both days. High temperatures will also be maintained throughout the weekend in inland areas. These will be the hottest days so far this summer. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/hottest-days-summer-costa-del-sol-20240728075314-nt.html

FRIGILIANA

Restrictions on irrigation increase in Frigiliana, where excessive consumption begins to be penalized: {Translation, summary}
– The situation of the aquifers in Frigiliana is not at all promising. This is demonstrated by the new restrictions implemented by the irrigation community of the Lízar and El Molino irrigation channels, which for the second consecutive year has been forced to establish a system of shifts, dividing the 320 hectares of crops that make up the community, where there are also numerous rural dwellings, into three zones.
– The restrictions are even more severe than those of last summer, as instead of two zones, three have been created, so that water is only available in each zone two days a week. In addition, on Sundays there is no supply in any zone. In addition, this year, for the first time, the community has also begun to penalise excessive consumption, establishing a system of tranches, with prices ranging from 20 euro cents for the first 1,500 litres per plot per day (the equivalent of 671 square metres), 35 cents if consumption is between 1,500 and 2,999 litres per plot per day, and 0.5 cents if it is more than 3,000 litres per plot per day.
– For its part, in the neighbouring town of Nerja, for the moment, no restrictions have been implemented in the irrigation community of San Isidro, as was the case in the summer of 2023. From the river Chíllar the transfer of up to 120 litres per second for the supply system of La Viñuela is maintained, which means some 3.8 cubic hectometres per year. This summer the irrigators of the Guaro Plan, with 6,535 hectares, are receiving an extraordinary emergency irrigation of three cubic hectometres from the La Viñuela reservoir, after having been without irrigation supplies since 1 October 2022. The reservoir has almost 28 hectometres, twice as much as in 2023. IRELAND

Edna O’Brien, Ireland’s daring chronicler of women’s lives, dies at 93:
– Edna O’Brien, the author who wrote of her native Ireland in such febrile prose, steeped in sex, love and religious angst, that it sparked national outrage and led to her self-imposed exile, has died aged 93, her agent said on Sunday.
– O’Brien died peacefully on Saturday after a long illness, her agent said in a statement. In a career spanning more than 60 years, O’Brien wrote more than 20 novels and worked well into her 90s. Such was the universal appeal of her portrayal of women’s experiences, she received France’s highest cultural distinction in 2021. PRODUCT ALERT

Rogue Sausage Casing Operation Shut For Lack Of Sanitation:
{Translation, summary}
– The Guardia Civil has arrested a man for an alleged offence against public health after 8,600 kilograms of pork casings for the production of sausages were seized in two clandestine establishments in Malaga.
– The investigation began after the agents became aware of a possible illegal activity in a warehouse in the Polígono San José de El Viso de Málaga Capital, where they were allegedly producing casings for use in the manufacture of sausages.
– Inside the premises, several people were observed processing pork casings using the technique of preservation in brine (water with a concentration of dissolved salt), and the poor state of maintenance and cleanliness of the installations, machinery and materials was detected.
– The processed product was in direct contact with the ground, the facilities lacked refrigeration equipment and there was a large number of live and dead insects in contact with the food products. In addition, a second warehouse was located in the same street where a large number of casings were also stored.
Due to the large volume of material, the inspection was carried out over two consecutive days and a total of 8,600 kilograms of pork casings were seized. The agents counted 44 drums, 97 boxes and three large-capacity containers with salted casings, which were intended to be marketed for the production of sausages.
– These two premises lacked authorisation, licences, as well as other administrative authorisations and/or sanitary registrations, for which reason the Town Council has decreed the immediate cessation of the activity on detecting deficient hygienic and sanitary conditions, serious, imminent and extraordinary risk to public health. Since the inspection, these clandestine premises have remained out of business and all the product seized has been destroyed.
