SPAIN

New accusations in the ‘Begoña Gómez case’ are filed against Sánchez- for an alleged crime of embezzlement: {Translation}
– Vox, Hazte Oír and Iustitia Europa, plaintiffs in the case in which Begoña Gómez, the wife of the President of the Government, is being investigated, have now filed a new complaint against Pedro Sánchez for an alleged crime of embezzlement.
– All of them are pointing the finger at the President, considering that he has used public money and the resources of the State Attorney General’s Office to file a complaint against the judge investigating his wife for an alleged crime of prevarication.
– Vox has gone further and announced on Wednesday that its complaint is not only directed against Sánchez, but also against the Minister of Justice, Félix Bolaños, and the State Attorney General, David Vilas Álvarez. Vox has defended this decision denouncing that Sánchez “continues to prostitute the institutions” and “using them for his personal interest”, thus criticising that the president of the Government processes his complaint against the judge through the State Attorney General’s Office. “Only Vox will continue to do everything possible to confront him,” the party, which is participating as a popular accusation in the investigation of Sánchez’s wife, said in a message on social networks.
– For its part, Hazte Oír, argues in its complaint that Sánchez “has used public assets and the means of the State Attorney General’s Office for a strictly private purpose, meeting the typical elements of the crime of embezzlement”. For the association, it is “clear that the defendant has used the State Attorney’s Office to defend purely private interests that have nothing to do with his status as a member of the Government or with what is legally provided for” in the law. “As a private citizen, and regardless of the criticism that may be generated by the fact that we are facing a clear attack on judicial independence, it is true that he can bring any criminal action he deems appropriate. What is not licit is to use State institutions for the defence of purely private interests”, he maintains.
– This action, says Hazte Oír, “is framed in the context of a growing interference of the defendant in the different institutions of the State”. “The reality is quite different, with the defendant’s conduct seeming to translate into the phrase ‘the government is me’. The reality is quite different, with public institutions and public funds being subject to the purposes of public utility that are proper to them, and not at the service of purely private interests and whims”, the document adds.
– Finally, Iustitia Europa has informed through a press release that it has filed a complaint against Sánchez “and other authorities involved for the alleged crimes of prevarication and embezzlement” before the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court on Wednesday. The political party, which accuses the president of the Government of trying to “interrupt the correct instruction” of the ‘Begoña Gómez case’, considers “that there are rational and sufficient indications that the conduct” of Sánchez, “of improperly using the State Attorney’s Office, is indicatively constitutive of the crimes of prevarication and embezzlement”. “Sánchez has chosen to use public resources such as the State Attorney’s Office in order to devise a procedural strategy to protect his wife from the investigation of the 41st Court of Instruction of Madrid. It is undoubtedly an instrumental complaint aimed at removing the investigator from the judicial proceedings without any criminal grounds whatsoever”, he concludes. The lady doth protest too much, methinks- Sánchez continues without explaining his wife’s professional activity and accuses the opposition of “devoting themselves to a fable”: {Translation}
– The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has dismissed the questions put to him by journalists on Wednesday about the professional activities of his wife, Begoña Gómez, disingenuously stating that he has already given “all the explanations in Congress”, when in fact he has not said whether he was aware of the meetings that his wife held in Moncloa and whether he was at any of them, in Congress, or when testifying before the judge earlier this week.
– At the press conference to assess the political year before the summer break in August, Sánchez has not spoken of his wife, charged with possible influence peddling and business corruption, and has instead accused the opposition parties on several occasions of “engaging in fabrications” and inventing a “non-case”.
– “This is a non-case that comes from the frustration and impotence of the opposition, which has given up the political battle of ideas. We have a government that governs and an opposition that fabricates”, said the head of the Executive.
– Specifically, Sánchez was asked if he was aware of the meetings that his wife held in Moncloa with the businessman Carlos Barrabés or with the rector of the Complutense University of Madrid, Joaquín Goyache, both of whom are accused in the same case as Gómez and both of whom have admitted in court to having met with her; whether he was in any of those meetings, Barrabés said that on a couple of occasions he saw Sánchez there; as well as whether he knew about the “declarations of interest” that his wife signed for companies that participated in public tenders.
– The president has not answered any of these questions, but has said that he has already given “sufficient political explanations in Congress”. On the other hand, he did talk about the lawsuit he has filed against Judge Juan Carlos Peinado for alleged prevarication in summoning him to Moncloa to appear as a witness – he finally invoked his right not to testify against his spouse – and also about the fact that the document was signed by the State Attorney’s Office.
– The complaint, says Sánchez, seeks to defend the “dignity” of the “institution of the Presidency” and the “rights that have been recognised since no less than 1886” and which, he denounced, have been “trampled” with the instruction of Judge Peinado. On Tuesday, he believes, there was “a montage” and it was “absolutely pathetic and embarrassing” to see “the ultra-right-wing associations fighting to see who could enter” his testimony. However, he expressed his conviction that “time will put things in their place”. However, the head of the Executive has avoided at all times during the press conference directly criticising Judge Peinado, as other members of his government have done, such as the Minister of the Presidency and Justice, Félix Bolaños, who has denounced a “cruel and inhumane political persecution” of the president’s wife.
– Finally, Sánchez has played down the importance of the lawsuits that Vox has brought against himself and Minister Bolaños for accusing the magistrate of prevarication, since, as he pointed out, this party has done nothing more than “judicialise politics and politicise Justice” since it burst onto the political scene. “I don’t know how many lawsuits we have had since I became president of the government. Let’s see, if for Vox I’m a dictator, I don’t stop staging coups d’état, Spain is breaking up, it’s sinking and we’re on our way to becoming I don’t know what Latin American country…, well, of course, that’s the way it’s going”, he concluded. {Yikes! Venezuela here we come! -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5536868/0/sanchez-sigue-sin-explicar-actividad-profesional-su-mujer-acusa-oposicion-dedicarse-fabular/

ANDALUCÍA

Unconstitutional or outright mutiny? “The Catalonia agreement is an absolute attack on the interests of communities such as Andalusia”: {Translation}
– The first day of the new Andalusian government and the first serious problem on the table. The fiscal sovereignty agreement for Catalonia signed by the Catalan socialists and ERC has raised all the alarm bells in the rest of the autonomous communities, and the president of the Andalusian regional government, Juanma Moreno, and the minister of finance, Carolina España, have taken advantage of the first public act to express their categorical opposition. It should be borne in mind, however, that for the moment only what ERC has revealed about the signed agreement is known, namely that the Catalan Generalitat would manage 100% of the taxes collected in the region.
– If this agreement were to be put into effect, it would represent “an absolute attack on the interests of communities such as Andalusia” for the President of the Junta, which is why he has announced that “we must respond and we will respond” in a reaction that goes beyond the interests of Andalusia, appealing to “the defence of a country” for which he has demanded guiding principles such as “solidarity and equality of citizens, wherever we live”.
– In the message he addressed to his new government during the swearing-in ceremony for new members and those taking on other responsibilities, Moreno warned of “the threats” that will face this updated cabinet at the halfway point of the legislature, among which he identified the political agreement for the governability of Catalonia, which he described as “breaking de facto solidarity between Spaniards” in that it “gives fiscal independence to Catalonia”. “It is a blow to the principle of solidarity”, said the Andalusian President, referring to the possibility that Catalonia could manage the full collection of taxes generated in its territory in order to subsequently make a solidarity contribution to the financing of the rest of the communities, while at the same time placing this principle of sharing fiscal resources in each territory as “the essence of the State”.
– Unconstitutional or outright mutiny? The Minister of Finance and new spokesperson for the Andalusian Government, Carolina España, has detailed that the “pre-agreement” announced by ERC and PSC, which states that Catalonia would leave the common system and collect one hundred percent of taxes, seems “clearly unconstitutional” and represents the “first step” towards the independence of this community. “It is worrying that this pre-agreement on which the central government has not yet openly pronounced itself, but which blows up the Constitution, the unity of Spain, the equality of Spaniards, the principle of inter-territorial solidarity, the principle of cohesion and the current system of financing”. “In a way, what they are looking for is financial independence in order to achieve Catalonia’s independence; it is the first step in a plan conceived by the pro-independence movement”, he said.
– He warned that if what is contained in the aforementioned pre-agreement were to be carried out, it would have “catastrophic consequences not only for Andalusia but for the rest of Spain because in the end we are talking about 30,000 million euros for Catalonia and breaking the equality of Spaniards”. AXARQUÍA

The heatwave puts the Axarquia region under a yellow warning for high temperatures on Thursday and Friday: {Translation}
– The third heat wave of the summer in Spain is being felt since Wednesday in the Axarquia. The peak of heat will be reached between Thursday and Friday, when temperatures may exceed 40 degrees in some localities and the minimum night temperatures may not drop below 25 degrees. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated the yellow warning for high temperatures for both days in the region.
– The terral will be the main feature of the beginning of August in Axarquia. The warning for Thursday will be active between 13:00 and 21:00 hours, for maximum temperatures of 38 degrees. For Friday these conditions will be maintained and in the same time zone, although AEMET adds in its warning that on this day “in the interior of the region it is expected to exceed 40 degrees”.
– The cause of this situation is the irruption of a very warm and stable air mass over the Peninsula. This factor, together with the high sunshine at this time of year, the absence of cloud cover and light or calm winds, will lead to a rise in temperatures this Thursday in areas of the extreme south as a result of land winds. Thus, AEMET expects the highest temperatures to be in the interior of the southeast of the peninsula and the interior of the province of Malaga, where it is likely to exceed 42 degrees Celsius.
– Meteorology forecasts for this Thursday in the province of Malaga little cloudy or clear skies. There will be dust in suspension. Temperatures will rise, locally noticeable in the coastal areas, and unchanged in the regions of Antequera and Ronda. Light variable winds.
– AEMET forecasts highs of up to 42 degrees in La Viñuela and Riogordo; 41 degrees in Benamargosa, Periana and Alcaucín; 40 degrees in Canillas de Aceituno, Colmenar, Cútar and Totalán; 39 degrees in Rincón de la Victoria, Almáchar, El Borge, Moclinejo, Canillas de Albaida, Salares, Sedella, Comares and Alfarnatejo; 38 degrees in Vélez-Málaga, Benamocarra, Cómpeta, Arenas, Iznate, Macharaviaya, Árchez and Alfarnate; 37 degrees in Algarrobo, Frigiliana and Sayalonga; or 35 degrees in Nerja and Torrox. Night-time lows will be between 23 and 28 degrees.
– For Friday, Meteorology expects clear skies in the province. There will be dust in suspension during the first half of the day. Temperatures will fall, except for unchanged highs on the coast. Winds will blow lightly to moderately westerly, with strong intervals on the coast.
– Temperatures this day will rise in coastal areas, while they will fall in some inland areas of the region. Thus, highs of 41 degrees are forecast in La Viñuela and Benamargosa; 40 degrees in Rincón de la Victoria and Totalán; 39 degrees in Canillas de Aceituno, Benamocarra, Alcaucín, Almáchar, El Borge, Riogordo and Cútar; 38 degrees in Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo, Periana, Moclinejo, Macharaviaya, Iznate, Salares, Sedella, Canillas de Albaida and Árchez; 37 degrees in Frigiliana, Cómpeta, Arenas, Sayalonga and Comares; 36 degrees in Torrox and Colmenar; 35 degrees in Nerja; and 34 degrees in Alfarnate and Alfarnatejo. The minimum temperatures will continue to be very high, with large areas where the mercury will remain between 23 and 27 degrees.
– On Saturday the winds will turn southeast, causing a significant drop in temperatures in Axarquia. Maximum temperatures in the interior will remain below 35 degrees, while on the coast they will be between 30 and 32 degrees. There will also be a slight respite in the minimum values as, although the tropical nights will continue, the mercury will remain at 22 or 23 degrees. AEMET forecasts clear skies for Saturday in Andalusia, with intervals of low clouds and mist on the Mediterranean coast. Temperatures are expected to fall on the Mediterranean coast, with a notable drop in the highs on the coast, and with little change in the rest of the region. Winds will be light and variable. MALAGA PROVINCE

“Thousands of letters pending delivery in Malaga”- CCOO denounces that the Post Office staff is at 30%, provides some areas with delivery only once a month!: {Translation}
– Notifications to be delivered, letters that have not yet been delivered to their addressees… CCOO is warning of the “abandonment of the public service of Correos in the province of Malaga” and describes as “unacceptable” the cuts in recruitment that the company is carrying out, with a staff team that is at 30% of the total that it should be, says the union. According to the union, staff holidays are not being covered, both for delivery, office and logistics staff, which adds to the number of people who should have joined the company to balance retirements, medical leave or cases of leave of absence.
– Another factor that is aggravating the situation, explain the CCOO, is the fact that the contracts that are materialising are part-time, “establishing precarious and degraded employment in the largest public company in the country”, which they say “ignores the continuous requests” made by the organisation, “putting economic savings before the health of the staff and the public service it provides”.
– Correos, adds CCOO in a statement sent to the media, does not provide data on the number of items that are undelivered, but the union says it has made visits in which it has been able to confirm that the mail is not arriving or is arriving after the deadline. In order for the service to continue to be provided, the organisation specifies that Correos employees are working under enormous pressure and in an untenable situation as they are forced to take on the delivery of those areas without coverage, in addition to their own, “which means tripling or quadrupling the work assigned to each worker”. “These circumstances are linked to increased levels of stress and anxiety and also to an increase in accidents at work”, add the trade unionists from Malaga.
– These circumstances entail “a serious detriment to the residents who are not receiving their letters and notifications from the different public administrations on time, and in many cases out of time, including medical appointments, Social Security decisions, unemployment benefits, payment of taxes, pensions, etc.”. CCOO states that Correos, “as a public postal operator of the universal postal service, must deliver daily to each and every home, but this situation is causing that there are areas where it is delivered only once a month”. NERJA

First stone of the new Nerja health center laid after more than twenty years of waiting: {Translation, summary}
– Since 2003, when the Nerja Town Hall and the Andalusian Regional Government, then governed by the PSOE, signed an agreement for the 50% financing of a new health centre in the easternmost coastal town of the province, there has been a succession of broken commitments, changes in the location of the project, renunciations of the agreement and modifications to the land. More than two decades later, this Wednesday the first stone was laid for the construction of the future health facility, with an initially planned completion period of 18 and a half months and an investment of almost 9.5 million euros, financed with European funds. ALGARROBO

The PSOE denounces the health situation in Andalusia in Algarrobo: {Translation}
– The secretary general of the PSOE in Malaga, Daniel Pérez, points out that the health situation in Andalusia right now is extreme. “We find that the Junta de Andalucía, with the cuts it is making in the health sector, is practically leaving the health system to die”.
– At the moment, “there is a health fire practically in the eight provinces of Andalusia, in this province, in Malaga too, and here in Algarrobo we see how the lack of a paediatrician in the most important month which is the month of August, when Algarrobo sees its population double, from around 7,000 inhabitants to practically double, 14,000 inhabitants, what it does is to eliminate the paediatric service. When there are more children in Algarrobo, the Junta de Andalucía, with Moreno Bonilla in charge, eliminates the paediatrician,” said Pérez.
– For this reason, “we have come this morning to Algarrobo, together with the municipal spokesperson, María José Ruiz, to demand that there be a paediatrician every month of the year. In addition, the emergency point is extended at the time of care, which is an emergency point shared with other municipalities and that generates a situation of neglect at the time when the team is activated. What is needed here is for the mayoress to stand up for her neighbours, to show her face, to explain to her neighbours that instead of defending Moreno Bonilla in this dramatic situation that we are suffering with the health system, that instead of being subservient to her party, the Partido Popular, she should show her face for the neighbours of Algarrobo, that she should defend her neighbours. As mayoress she has to defend the general interest of her citizens, and what she is currently more concerned about is making a political career in the Partido Popular”, added the secretary general.
– The socialist spokesperson in the Town Hall of Algarrobo, María José Ruiz, decried “once again to the government of the Junta de Andalucía, to Juanma Moreno, the deficit that exists in public health. Above all, she told him to listen once and for all to the citizens, to the health workers, but above all to the residents of Andalusia, and more specifically of Algarrobo”. “In our municipality we have the problem that right now we have no paediatrician. Every time the paediatrician goes on holiday there is no replacement for the paediatrician, we only have a paediatrician two days a week, as we have a shared paediatrician. That is why we demand that the public health system be taken care of, that the citizens stop being ignored with cuts and more cuts. This is a lack of political will and that once and for all we have a paediatrician every day and an emergency room from 3:00 in the afternoon, because they are playing with the health of our citizens”, she concludes. GRANADA

Costa Tropical’s mango and avocado harvest down by 90 per cent after five years of ‘ruin’:
– There is likely to be another calamitous harvest for the subtropical crop growers of the Granada province Costa Tropical coast, which has seen five disastrous seasons in a row. Changing temperatures, together with the long periods of drought, have meant that the trees hardly bear any fruit and are defenceless against pests.
– In the Rio Verde valley 95 per cent of producers, more than 2,000 families, are facing a new “disastrous and ruinous” time with 90 per cent of the normal production of crops such as mango and avocado lost. For the moment, only custard apples are surviving the weather. Ex-BBC presenter Huw Edwards admits buying illegal sex photos of children to view on WhatsApp:
– Former BBC presenter Huw Edwards {pic} has admitted accessing indecent photographs of children as young as seven after a man he met online sent him hundreds of sexual images on WhatsApp. The court heard that Edwards had engaged in online chat involving illegal photographs with an adult man on WhatsApp between December 2020 and August 2021, who sent him 377 sexual images, of which 41 were indecent images of children.
– The indecent images that were sent included seven category A, the worst, 12 category B, and 22 category C. Of the category A images, the estimated age of most of the children was between 13 and 15, but one was aged between seven and nine, the court was told.
– During the period he was being sent the photographs, Edwards fronted coverage of the funeral of the late Duke Of Edinburgh, and a programme from Windsor Castle the night before the funeral called HRH The Duke Of Edinburgh Remembered.
– During his career, he fronted BBC’s News At Ten for 20 years and anchored coverage of major national events including announcing Queen Elizabeth II’s death on the BBC and presenting coverage of her funeral. He was previously the BBC’s highest-paid newsreader, with a pay bracket of £475,000 to £479,999 for the year 2023/24 for 160 presenting days, BBC One news specials, election specials and other television programming, according to the corporation’s latest annual report.
{As I have warned in the past, these dangerous activities are all too common on WhatsApp and social media. Those apps are easily subscribed to with fake emails & phone numbers, making criminals anonymous and untraceable as they connect thru public or hacked wifi. That results in the proliferation of illegal activity: kiddie porn, weapons & drug sales, and human trafficking being common. Entire chat groups and social media communities are dedicated to various criminal purposes. Perhaps you’ve noticed how some locals will leave their house, where they probably have an internet connection, and walk a block or two, and stand outside a cafe that has wifi for customers, busy on their mobile, having stored the wifi password on a previous visit. Then after a few minutes they walk back to their house. If you pay attention, you may soon see a delivery-person on a scooter or bicycle arrive at that same house. And they ain’t dropping off dinner, it’s known as “tele-coca”. You don’t walk to use someone else’s wifi to order pizzas. By you using messengers & social media, these companies make money from you and your data, and thus you are indirectly supporting criminal activity and child abuse. By only using direct cellular calls & texts, or visiting websites directly thru your web browser without using other apps, you have far more security and avoid supporting evil causes. Just saying…-Ed.}

Cybercriminals Target Spain & Others To Deploy 100K+ Different Malware Android Apps to Steal “One Time Password Codes”:
– A new campaign has been observed making use of malicious Android apps to steal users’ SMS messages since at least February 2022 as part of a large-scale campaign. SMS messages with security passcodes can then be used to install even more malware on your device. If your Android device performance has suddenly slowed down, or if you notice the battery suddenly drains faster, or if any of your on-line accounts have unauthorized activity, or if you find yourself strangely redirected to odd websites, a rogue app or malware may be to blame.
– “This malware was monitoring one-time password messages across over 600 global brands, with some brands having user counts in the hundreds of millions of users,” mobile security firm Zimperium said.
– Victims of the campaign have been detected in 113 countries, with India and Russia topping the list, followed by Brazil, Mexico, the U.S., Ukraine, Spain, and Turkey.
– The starting point of the attack is the installation of a malicious app that a victim is tricked into installing on their device either through deceptive ads mimicking Google Play Store app listings or any of the 2,600 Telegram bots that serve as the distribution channel by masquerading as legitimate services (e.g., Microsoft Word). Once installed, the app requests permission to access incoming SMS messages, following which it reaches out to one of the 13 command-and-control (C2) servers to transmit stolen SMS messages.
– “The malware remains hidden, constantly monitoring new incoming SMS messages,” the researchers said. “Its primary target is OTPs used for online account verification.”
– It’s currently not clear who is behind the operation, although the threat actors have been observed accepting various payment methods. It’s likely that the phone numbers associated with the infected devices are being used without the owner’s knowledge to register for various online accounts by harvesting the OTPs required for two-factor authentication (2FA).

TRAVEL

Spain watchdog fines Booking.com 413 mn euros:
– Spain’s competition watchdog said Tuesday it had slapped online travel agency Booking.com with a record 413-million-euro fine for “abusing its dominant position” during the past five years. “These practices have affected hotels located in Spain and other online travel agencies that compete with the platform. Its terms and conditions create an inequitable imbalance in the commercial relationship with hotels located in Spain,” the authority, known by its acronym CNMC, said in a statement.
– “By better positioning hotels with more bookings on Booking.com, other online agencies have been prevented from entering the market or expanding,” it added.
– This is the largest fine ever imposed by the CNMC, a spokeswoman for the authority told AFP. Full article: https://today.rtl.lu/news/business-and-tech/a/2218520.html
